Good evening #ECEchat PLN! My name is Nancy. I am the very proud principal of Celina Primary School in North Texas. I am passionate about things #ECE and #EarlyEd#STEAM#STEM
Hi #ECEchat friends! Heidi here, #EarlyEd District Program Administrator in North Texas. I'm passionate about all things #PreK, leadership, #CodingInPk & #ECEchat !
A1 We select one trait each month. We have a chant and focus on how the trait impacts everyone. Lots of discussion, stories, play and modeling đ#ECEchat
A1: we have weekly social emotional lessons which are fantastic!!! I also always try to relate things back to how others may feel and relate back to are we being respectful? #ECEchat
A1: Integrating SEL lessons and activities within a daily class meeting and seizing opportunities for teachable moments! Catching kiddos demonstrating compassion and empathy can help students recognize it within a natural context, too! #ecechat
A1 I base all my lessons around character ed themes and encourage Ss to do kindness challenges! We call each trait Mustang Mindsets! Hoping to have S led assemblies and videos made! #ECEChat
A1: Social stories, role playing, LEAP social skills. I do love a good social story! On the flip side anytime you add puppets to a social situation that can help guide âgood characterââor âexpectationsâ do it! The students will eat it up! #ECEchat
A1. By establishing a classroom community where every student wants to & feels safe to belong. Provide opportunities for fostering positive experiences between members of the community (btwn Tchrs & Ss too!). Recognize the good in one another. #ECEChat
A: I strongly believe that building a relationship with a Ss is the foundation of building character/empathy. When communicating w a Ss especially during a self regulation struggle itâs imperative for that child to know you care & are invested in them - they WILL respond #ECEChat
A1 Childrenâs literature and book characters are great spring boards for teaching about good character and empathy. Im always asking, âHow does the character feel? How do you know? How would you feel if that were you?â #ecechat
A2 Problem solver is a classroom job and when Ss have issues the PS steps in. Ss lead and Ss solved. I also have 4 yrs be Sea Lion Helpers to a 3. They get a special Sea Lion sticker on their badge that is worn everyday. #ECEChat
A2. Teach the students solutions for their toolkit that they can use when problems arise. Both in situations when they want/need something or if someone is bothering them. I love the solution cue kit cards: https://t.co/75cKWuWn8Q#ECEChat
A2... I also believe in accountability at all ages for students. They made the choice, now we fix it and learn from it so it doesnât become a problem in our lives! Give lots of grace! #ECEchat
A2: We have "Star Rules" at our school: Be Respectful, Responsible and Safe. We also use CSEFEL solution cards which really help our kids become independent problem solvers. #ecechat
A2: Once expectations are in place have the students leading the expectations for the class. Peer to peer communication is far more crucial then teacher to peer. If the teacher is solving all the social situations then the students are not implementing or leading. #ECEchat
A2: weâve been really focused on the positive and working together as a team. I introduced class points & they have been working to help each other with those character skills & listening. Some of my athletes have really stepped up to lead the class in a positive way #ECEchat
Agreed! All behavior is communication. Instead of punishing we need to teach appropriate behaviors and use restorative practices. @sharalc my counselor is great at this! #ECEChat
A2: Students who are assigned rotating classroom "jobs" are given access to unscripted scenarios on responsibility, choice, and service. Facilitating this type of interaction is crucial in preparing them for a world full of possibilities! Many teachable moments. #ECEchat
My favorite moments are when my leaders help other students by reminding them how we use our big words. Praising these moments helps create a classroom of leaders. #ECEchat
A2: By letting them lead a game or an activity. Once they have done this they seem more comfortable in front of their peers and are willing to do more.
#ecechat
A1: With 2 yr olds we do a lot of naming the emotion/feeling. We try to build the language and understanding to plant the seed for continued learning as they get older. Also lots of praise for showing empathy for peers and being aware of others and their emotions. #ECEchat
A2: At our school, @sharalc intentionally teaches students social problem solving lessons. We use the same language throughout our school and reinforce it during morning announcements and with prizes. #ECEChat
So LEAP is a program that is fully centered around students on the autism spectrum and having them integrated into the gen ed classroom. In LEAP ALL students learn specific social skills and teachers embed these skills through out the entire day. #ECEChat
A2: Model expectations & leadership. Use teachable moments to demonstrate problem solving skills. Have conversations w Ss about choices & emotions. Have every Ss responsible for a job in class. Allow Ss to work through moments w guidance - recognize positives & celebrate #ECEChat
Provide natural opportunities for leadership - leading activities, passing out papers, working in small groups to determine a solution to a problem - It's important for Ts to show Ss that their thoughts/ideas are important - I've learned many things from young learners! #ecechat
That universal piece is SO key to having success!! I made calm down kits this year for all 1st2nd and specials teachers to keep common language! #ECEChat
Great classroom job idea @KLCseedtotree Young learners sometimes skew towards tattle telling, but having a Problem Solver as a special classroom job is such a positive way to help friends, build confidence, and foster responsibly & student agency. #ecechat
A2 Problem solver is a classroom job and when Ss have issues the PS steps in. Ss lead and Ss solved. I also have 4 yrs be Sea Lion Helpers to a 3. They get a special Sea Lion sticker on their badge that is worn everyday. #ECEChat
A3 I have a counselorâs corner in our parent newsletter where I highlight the trait we are working on and how to foster that learning at home! #ECEChat
A3 use @Seesaw to send out links to SEL lessons, Daniel Tiger and Sesame Street parent apps; let parents know our calm down routines...can use at home to help reinforce learning from school #ECEchat
A3 contacting parents!! We are a team, so Iâve discussed with them things going on in the classroom & we send home links about our social emotional lessons #ECEchat
A3: I share articles on our class Facebook page, I include what we're working on and the steps in my newsletter, I give them pages to follow on Facebook such as Conscious Discipline, Love & Logic and Zones of Regulation #ECEchat
A3: We share with them early on how we build character in the classroom. We include social-emotional growth in our Parent-Teacher Conf. and send home handouts with ideas on how they support it at home #ecechat
A3 We utilize @FrogStreet Pre-K curriculum & it comes with Parents Are Teacher Too (PATT) flyers which helps connects the thematic learning going on inside the classroom to the home. #ECEChat
We have second step lessons in my school and we share with parents things that we are working on, such as empathy, attending, etc... Ideas are sent home on things they can do at home with their child. #ecechat
A3: In our weekly newsletters we specifically tell parents what social skill or character dev. we are working on at that specific time. We also pair it with the visual that we use in the classroom for all of our students. So if they want to use at home they are able to. #ECEchat
A3 Teachers can create customized video playlists for families using @ReadyRosie Some of the videos target #SEL skills. Itâs a great tool for engaging, equipping, & empowering families. #ecechat
A3: parent engagement/involvement makes a significant difference. Ss are observant of the communication & relationships we are building w their parents. Face to face com-sent wkly newsletters w @ConsciousD / #risdpbis expectations-used @Seesaw & parent ed events #ECEChat
A4: Modeling positive behaviors is vital in creating a school climate that encourages citizenship. Morning meetings are an excellent way to build community in the classroom. #ECEchat
A4: I think building wide their needs to be consistent expectations, language and accountability. Older students model for the younger and behaviors are acknowledged and lots of positive praise and practice! #ECEChat
A4 a new initiative I actually just thought of today is just like we have classroom jobs we can have building wide jobs: making sure the lost & found is tidy, helping wipe tables, making sure trash is picked up, student twitter, greeter for guest speakers etc #ECEChat
A4: school wide we use can do statements and expect kids to be Can Do kids. I also try to stress too about how they are role models & how important that job is #ECEchat
Our librarian @SeaLionLibrary does a great job setting up voting stations for books then announces the winner much like adults vote for political offices; vote on names for class pets (ladybugs we raise đ) #ecechat
A4: working to meet Ss where theyâre at and recognizing that success looks different for all students, but all students have something valuable to contribute to our school community. And acting in accordance with that belief! #ECEchat
A4: Giving as much praise for the good with guidance and understanding for the mistakes. Teach to the whole child! We all have our moments but with support from our âCommunityâ we can always do more together. #ECEchat
Q4: We do morning meetings in my classroom. I also refer to everything (the room, the school, etc) as "ours". I will also make sure I draw attention to positive behaviors that I see. #ecechat
A4 model model model point out when Simone does something good create scenarios how would u deal with such situations....donât just talk listen let ss speak #ECEChat#letthemspeak@RickJetter@RebeccaCoda
Q4: We are in a hallway with 3rd and 4th graders, and I call on them to model positive behavior for my preschoolers. It's a win-win: my kids get great role models and the older kids feel a sense of responsibility to be those great models. #ecechat
Totally agree!! Iâve switched to praising kids when I see they are making good choices. I know you can do it, sometimes itâs just hard to make good choices #ecechat

A4: Praise and love on students as much as you can. We have many students in crisis, we need to show them we genuinely care about them and love them. School is a safe place. #ECEChat
Q5: Mistakes are essential for growth. What restorative justice strategies do you consider to help students deal with misbehavior and create a culture of connectivity? #ECEchat
A4: Create opportunities for children to be responsible citizens in your class / in the school. Acknowledge and celebrate kids as the demonstrate increased responsibility. These skills are developmental, so we need to recognize EACH student's individual growth. #ecechat
No but I will now! So many kids come to us thinking they r bad and no one believes in them so they act that way âu must touch a heart before u can touch the brainâ #ECEChat

A4: Weâve embraced #RISDPBIS simultaneously w @ConsciousD We have school wide common expectations of being Respectful, Responsible & Safe-We have verbal positive reinforcements & use @DobiePrimary Star Tickets w positive phone calls home-All staff/Ss have been successful #ECEChat
A5: making an effort to âclose the loopâ as much as humanly possible. Whether a Ss has a consequence or just needs time to calm down, we need to have a later convo about what happened, what was the cause, and what we can do next time. #ECEchat
Q5: Mistakes are essential for growth. What restorative justice strategies do you consider to help students deal with misbehavior and create a culture of connectivity? #ECEchat
A5 Face to face-Ss with behavior stands and listens to the other Ss say why they donât like________. Each has turn to talk and resolve and usually ends in an Iâm sorry; T guides S as this face 2 face occurs #ECEchat
Q5: Mistakes are essential for growth. What restorative justice strategies do you consider to help students deal with misbehavior and create a culture of connectivity? #ECEchat
A5: Basically, we try to figure out how we can make better choices in the future with that same situation arises. I'll help them out if they need it. I try to make it as positive of an experience as possible. #ecechat

RT Q5: Mistakes are essential for growth. What restorative justice strategies do you consider to help students deal with misbehavior and create a culture of connectivity? #ECEchat
A5: I'm also big on giving second chances as soon as possible. We deal with it, we move on. I want to teach mine that conflicts can be a positive learning experience, not a negative. We all make mistakes. #ecechat
A5: This one is tricky. Well for me at least. In our room we have our calm down area/thinking station if students need that time. We do a lot of lazy 8 breathing from the curriculum Zones of regulation. #ECEchat
A5. Make a plan to fix it. Make a plan to change the behavior. If we just âpunishâ nothing is learned or changed. We want to ensure good choices are made moving forward! #ECEchat
A5 Teaching students that their words and actions matter. Empower them to use their words and Big Voice to communicate their needs & wishes when someone else does something that hurts them. #ECEChat
A5 all discipline/behavior comes through me first and I work on problem solving solutions, reteaching, repairing damage as needed - anything severe or safety issues I pass on to our AP who is awesome!! #ECEChat
A6: Our children are our future. We must teach them to be kind, compassionate and open-minded. I think open conversations with children are best to teach respect and diversity. #ECEchat
You are speaking my language. I understand actions have consequences but nothing is learned if we do not take that opportunity to teach how to do it better next time. #ECEChat
A5: make a connection with the student when they are âin the green.â If the student is âin the red,â I can only be present and let him or her know I will be there when they are ready. #ECEchat#ASD4ALL#asd4littlestlearners
A6 the world is ever changing, soft skills are more important than ever so being able to work with others, solve problems, and overcome and embrace mistakes is necessary! #ECEChat
A6: We are building empathy in students. Students need empathy in order to build connections with others. And we know strong connections lead to success #ECEchat#ASD4ALL#asd4littlestlearners
A5: valuing what Ss have to say on both ends- those that didnât make the better choice & those that were possibly hurt by the choice made. Let Ss know you hear them & have them talk to each other about the situation. Validate & reenforce positive behavior #ECEChat
A6: What I love most about teaching this age group is that they have compassion and acceptance for everyone (mostly) :) By having honest conversations we allow students to learn respect for themselves and for others regardless of race, ethnicity, gender etc. #ECEchat
A6: Because the world is so ever-changing that accepting one's differences (and others) is one of the most important traits you can have. Different isn't bad. Different is what makes life interesting. #ecechat
A6. Each of us bring something to the table to help us learn and grow! I love teaching kiddos to celebrate what makes us special and that some students need different things to learn and that is just a okay! #ECEchat
A6: the sooner children understand their likes & dislikes they are able to begin to work through the tough emotions - their self reflection (guided by adults) is definitely beneficial in realizing that others also feel as they do. They make connections w each other #ECEChat
Good Gravy! So many incredible resources to explore from tonightâs chat. Thank you, everyone đđđ#ECEchat um, no one else says Good Gravy, do they? đ¤Ł
