#ALedchat is a weekly chat on Twitter about education topics. It is held each Monday from 9-10pmCST. While the discussion on #ALedchat continues on Twitter well beyond our weekly one-hour chat session, this platform affords us the opportunity to extend, expand and share the conversation with an even greater audience. Educators from across the state of Alabama, and the world, can come here to find encouragement, support, resources, professional growth opportunities and advice, while providing the same to their colleagues.
Welcome to #ALedchat! Tonight’s chat is focused on a book written by @paul_bambrick entitled Leverage Leadership 2.0 and the 7 levers of Leverage Leadership. Pls tell us who you are, where youre from, & what you do there.

A1: DDI is using data to drive instruction and your practices. We are working daily to integrate using data to inform instruction at every level both formally and informally. #ALedchat
A1: DDI is used when we don't assume all students know the same thing instead we use assessment to drive instruction. We know assessment is information for us and about us. We use it! #ALedchat
A1: I define (DDI) as meeting the students where they are. Our teachers work daily in closing those gaps and working on those learning gains. @MasteryConnect is becoming our friend this year helping Ts to use data to drive instruction! #ALedchat
A1...DDI...Is your instruction driven by your data? Do you backup and reteach when kids don’t get it? Do you even realize when kids don’t get it? Or are you just putting the info out there and “hoping for the best”? #ALedchat
A1: DDI is used when we don't assume all students know the same thing instead we use assessment to drive instruction. We know assessment is information for us and about us. We use it! #ALedchat
A1: Knowing our students instructionally and personalizing instruction to meet their needs. This can happen through formal & informal assessments, running records, interest inventories, any info that assists us in reaching and growing each student. #ALedchat
A1: Ok, I’ve gotta choose between provocative and cooperative.
So I’ll just say we are working this year to be MUCH more intentional about considering ALL the information and evidence of learning available when we make decisions. #ALedchat
A1: DDI is any form of assessment used to determine what students' needs are; this approach allows for a prescriptive approach to instruction and assesment. It is used in many ways in @HomewoodSchools K-12 #ALedchat

Q2: Lever 2:Instructional Planning (IP) IP is all about backwards planning to guarantee strong lessons. How do you practice backward design to guarantee student success from your seat? #ALedchat

By using DDI, we can avoid the "Doc in the Box" mycoplasma diagnosis; which means we really don't know what's going on, but we will through this at it and hope for the best :) #aledchat

A2: We are working as a district on interim assessments at each grade level and in each content area. This gives a higher learning target than before and hopefully increases academic expectations throughout. #ALedchat
But I also agree with @DanKoretz that data (by which we mean test scores when it counts) should not drive or lead instruction. It should be the result of and *inform* instruction #ALedchat
A2 We are intentional about coaching our teachers with starting with the end in mind- using student data to plot where our Ss should be, where they are, and how we can use strategic instruction to get them to the next step #aledchat
Q2: Lever 2:Instructional Planning (IP) IP is all about backwards planning to guarantee strong lessons. How do you practice backward design to guarantee student success from your seat? #ALedchat
Essentially, being prescriptive in our efforts to address specific needs rather than a broadcast approach that can be very inefficient; one scenario might be having a pre-test on a standard to determine what, if anything, students know. Then we use the data we have #ALedchat
A1: DDI is any form of assessment used to determine what students' needs are; this approach allows for a prescriptive approach to instruction and assesment. It is used in many ways in @HomewoodSchools K-12 #ALedchat
A2: we have been practicing the ideas of beginning with the end in mind for many years in @HomewoodSchools and use instructional planning. For both of these, a collaborative approach is essential. We need each other to push ourselves forward. #ALedchat
Q2: Lever 2:Instructional Planning (IP) IP is all about backwards planning to guarantee strong lessons. How do you practice backward design to guarantee student success from your seat? #ALedchat
Or don't just give 2 aspirins and call me in the morning when there is much more intensive action needed; it is differentiation with an informed approach #ALedchat

Q2: Currently an area for improvement: but, more vertical planning to ensure students are receiving the priority standards. With IP, we have to realize all standards may not be taught in 10 months, but know the ones that should. #ALedchat

A2: In the #PBL model know/needtoknow strategy really helps in the be backward design. We want to have this final product, what do we do to get there? I highly recommend the know/needtoknow strategy for any lesson or content. #ALedchat

Q2: Lever 2:Instructional Planning (IP) IP is all about backwards planning to guarantee strong lessons. How do you practice backward design to guarantee student success from your seat? #ALedchat
It is critical to help students develop the skills and though processes necessary to take a problem and address it without the specific steps given; in many instances the process is paramount to the end result #ALedchat

Q3: Lever 3: Observation & Feedback: Formative information & true, factual feedback & coaching are rare jewels. Tell us about a time that you have been coached or when you have coached others successfully. What made the feedback successful? #ALedchat
Similar to the quote, “It’s about the journey, not the destination...”. We must know our destination, but the learning is in the “journey”. Plan the route carefully. #ALedchat
Q2: Lever 2:Instructional Planning (IP) IP is all about backwards planning to guarantee strong lessons. How do you practice backward design to guarantee student success from your seat? #ALedchat
A2...tough one and definitely room for growth here. Ultimately failing to plan is planning to fail. Pacing guides are often overlooked as “just another thing”; but beginning a course without a PG is like taking a trip without a GPS. #ALedchat
We have to ask ourselves 3 questions. 1. What do we want students to know? 2. How will they get there? and 3. How will we know they learned it? #ALedchat

A3: improving feedback is a goal @EdgewoodElem this year. We want the feedback we give to be useful to students. After it is given, we must give time for students to act on it. We can't just put it on paper and be done with it #ALedchat
Q3: Lever 3: Observation & Feedback: Formative information & true, factual feedback & coaching are rare jewels. Tell us about a time that you have been coached or when you have coached others successfully. What made the feedback successful? #ALedchat
A3: I experienced the most professional growth working with a principal who accurately described small slices of what he observed (focused, descriptive feedback) and asked questions that he never let me answer until later (if at all). He taught me to be reflective. #ALedchat

A3 All the instructional practice feedback that I have received and given that has had the greatest impact has been given with specificity and applicability. It wasn't arbitrary but provided guidance on key instructional approaches that could be used the next class day #ALedchat
A1: DDI is the timely, ongoing collection of qualitative & quantitative feedback from students & stakeholders to improve learning - the instructional design, delivery, reflection etc. Acknowledge perceptions to address reality. Done w/ transparency #ALedchat
A3: I have had so many mentors in my career; the one's that had the greatest impact took the time to find out what I was doing and why and offered constructive feedback. There's a difference between being on someone's team and being FOR them #truth#ALedchat

Q4: Lever 4: Professional Development (PD): Think about the best PD you ever had. What made it great? When teaching others, do you use those same techniques & characteristics? #ALedchat
A3...we have to be brave in giving and receiving feedback; and always include positives but also suggestions for growth. I always want to know what I can do to improve. #feedme#ALedchat
You make a key point here, Matt. As leaders, we must convey a genuine feeling to our team that we are indeed FOR them. This builds camaraderie and strengthens the bonds necessary to do this important work and navigate barriers that may distract from our goals @mkiser2#ALedchat
Great colleagues that challenge your thinking and are willing to support at every turn are hard to find; when we are lucky enough to have these folks in our lives we have to take advantage of the opportunity #ALedchat

He got 10 times more growth out of my by stopping me when I tried to answer right away and saying “no, that’s not for me. Think about it for a while.” #ALedchat
A2: W/ qualitative data (from quality tools) & quantitative data (formal/informal) in hand, I complete needs assessment to find strengths & OFIs. Pinpoint reteaching. W/ district model lessons, must reflect constantly to meet diverse needs of own class w/in grade level #ALedchat
A4:. The best PD is when teachers have voice and choice. Then, they are giving time to apply it. Furthermore, timing is everything. November days before Thanksgiving have not been great for us. Teachers can't apply it quick enough. #ALedchat
Q4: Lever 4: Professional Development (PD): Think about the best PD you ever had. What made it great? When teaching others, do you use those same techniques & characteristics? #ALedchat
A4: The best PD I have been a part of has been led by those in the trenches. Teachers and students who share PD that is relevant and allowed me to grow. These often have contagious passion for their work. #ALedchat
When we are pulling for our colleagues it changes the dynamic; it takes everything we do and puts meaning behind it. It is like being on a team and supporting the person next to you every play, every game, every season and growing together #ALedchat

A4: I have to say the best PD is PD that is differentiated to meet the needs of each individual teacher. We provide this type of PD for our teachers weekly. NO FACULTY MEETINGS EVER. Check out my principal @emilybharris blog.

Q4: Lever 4: Professional Development (PD): Think about the best PD you ever had. What made it great? When teaching others, do you use those same techniques & characteristics? #ALedchat
Enjoyed hosting our first professional “book tasting” @MaryBAustin. Differentiated professional learning which allows teachers to “taste” a selection of books & write “customer reviews” used to form tailored book study groups. #booktasting@gcouros@TechNinjaTodd@dbc_inc
A4 - Unpopular opinion alert -- My favorite PD was @researchED_US. An expert on a subject spoke to an audience about the subject...no bells, no whistles, just real information to improve the classroom.
Yes...I use this in my classroom.

We can travel across the globe and never find more applicable and relevant PD than that which happens in our school/district. Often, the ideas that PD ops present are not novel, it is the applicability in the specific setting that sets PD up to be successful #ALedchat

I agree! People are always willing to go the extra mile when they KNOW you are for them! I have worked many 10-14 hours days for leaders who I knew had my best interests at heart without a complaint. #ALedchat

A4 The greatest PD that I have ever had occurred when I could see it, in real time, being implemented with real students. We could see the approach, view how it impacted student learning, and note how we could implement the approach in our own schools #ALedchat
A4: Surely professional learning simply doesnt work as “one & done”. At best, it can be inspirational or an invitation.
For me, a three day workshop on Assessment FOR Learning with Rick Stiggins in 2003 pulled me down a rabbithole I’m delighted to still be in #ALedchat
Q5: Lever 5: Stu Culture: “Culture is not formed by speeches or statements of value. It is formed by repeated practice." What repeated practices are in place in your class/school/dist to create a strong student culture for learning? #ALedchat

Most powerful learning, modeling, & coaching came from @l_beard Growth mindset➡️use of continuous improvement quality tools. Asked ?s to help me generate solutions. @aghankins challenged me to embed quality tools w/in learning to improve instruction & empower kiddos #ALedchat
A4: The best PD I ever been apart of including modeling and performance with guidance. I attempt to include these strategies whenever I do PD. #ALedchat
Q5: Lever 5: Stu Culture: “Culture is not formed by speeches or statements of value. It is formed by repeated practice." What repeated practices are in place in your class/school/dist to create a strong student culture for learning? #ALedchat
A5: We are intentional about sharing high quality instruction and practices to celebrate teachers striving for excellence. Teachers and students alike enjoy their efforts being recognized and celebrated. #ALedchat
Lemme add: as leaders we can help set a direction/focus for large groups of learners but HAVE to expect the individuals to chart their own course to the learning goals. Prescribed actions are the refuge of the fully resistant: “I did exactly what you told me to do” #aledchat

You can tell a lot about an organization by listening to the conversations and looking at the check register. Both are snapshots of who they are. #ALedchat
The best PD for me is always personal & professional. It not only peeks my interest, but it is related to learning & achievement goals. Find out what your Ts are interested in and tie it back to the target. Teacher engagement increases student engagement!#ALedchat
A5 Continued: My superintendent uses this word often and it is something you see often in @TCBOE and that is exemplary teaching and learning. #ALedchat

Q6 Lever 6: Staff Culture: “A great team isn't built on superficial happiness but on concrete habits that bond a team” What are the concrete habits that have built a great culture in your school/district? #ALedchat
A4: Best PD was #WGEDD conference. Woven w/in each session, was passion for work educators do. They brought unique talents, gifts, & insight to sessions while encouraging us to bring our strengths & opportunities to improve as well. Instilled & reignited hope! #ALedchat
A5: We tie everything to our strategic plan when it comes to the district. It's such a practice that everyone knows it... admins, teachers, parents, students, community members. It's about maximizing each student's potential #ALedchat
A5 We let our students know how much we care about them & that they are on the road to greatness. This communicates that we believe in them & want the best for them. This builds culture & increases their motivation to work towards the learning goals we set together #aledchat

A6: We are having a great culture shift with our family trees this year. It’s our @Winterboro_High version of the Ron Clark Academy House idea. Each teacher has a family. It’s changing our culture! #aledchat
A6: Positive staff culture comes with solid relationships built on trust and love for one another. When people know you care about them and will support them through hard times, the “work” culture is solid. It is about more than being co-workers = a family. #ALedchat
A6...stolen from a colleague...students first, staff ALWAYS. You can’t just “talk” about creating relationships with staff...you have to DO IT! If Ts could overhear ALL your conversations-would they believe you truly care about them? #ALedchat
A5: Ongoing, intentional use of quality tools for Ss to give immediate feedback. Class developed mission & norms. Daily morning mtg. Specific feedback on a job well done & how to keep improving. I write individual postcards to recognize Ss strengths & share gratitude #ALedchat

I love this thought from #ALedchat. I will never forget one student in a placement looking up at me after I had helped him with a math problem and saying, “Ms. Buckner, you really care.” I hope my future students will know that I believe in them.
