Welcome, Coaches to S3 E1 of #swarmfbchat Feel free to intro yourselves. We will use the Q1/A1 format with the Qs coming on the 7s. Remember to use our hashtag in all responses. Like/RT as much as you want for max exposure - be sure to follow someone new tonight!
Q1 will be coming up in 4 minutes...stop in and say HI - follow someone new today. I will RT all responses to questions to help facilitate discussion. #swarmfbchat
A1: I do use team stats. I want to know how my play-calling was; like 3rd Down % which is a team goal. Player development is huge too - especially when I am evaluating an assistant. #swarmfbchat
P1: I will look back at every game on Hudl. Look at what they did against us to prepare for them next year. Meet with all the players to go over the positives and negatives from the year and hear their thoughts on the season. #swarmfbchat
A1: #swarmfbchat
I look at statistical Improvement vs opponent compared to our previous season and how other defenses did against them that year.... followed by individual player development
A1: I look to see where we struggled during the year position wise (tackling, 3rd and Long, screens) and make cut ups and use some data from Hudl to see if there was a pattern, then do some professional development to try and fix those issues #swarmfbchat
A1. I like the to look the evolution of our system, for my lb's are they reading keys, downhill, sound tackling, also plus plays as well as minus plays
#SwarmFBChat
P2: on the offensive side of the ball I will watch every offensive play. Then develop a plan for next year on what I feel could work. For culture, always trying to find new ways to improve it. Doing more team activities this offseason to help build it. #swarmfbchat
A1: I dig into what we ran this year and what gave us problems. What dn/ dst ,series of the game, were we predictable on certain downs or were we always beat on same blitz’s #swarmfbchat
A1.) I take a look back at film and how my drills portrayed into the game on the field. If not, scratch it. Defensive pass game stats and how we rank amongst top teams statistically. #SwarmFBChat
A1: start by breaking down the data. 3rd down efficiency, total yds by run/pass and turnovers and how the stats align with our team goals. #swarmfbchat
A1 like to look at film and see what hurt us scheme wise and how we can improve. Also look at players and depth where guys could fit and their strengths and weaknesses #swarmfbchat
A1 - look at ourselves and see why breakdowns occurred defensively. Focus on that when talking with other coaches and clinics. Look at deficiencies in terms of size, strength, & speed and see how we can improve. #swarmfbchat
A1: have to ask questions, why did this scheme give us fits? Was it scheme or player driven? Why did we not have success against this team or formation/play. Stats don't tell the whole story, 1 of our coaches says, we have to be a scientist when looking at issues. #swarmfbchat
A1 (cont) I would also like to look at penalties during games such as PI and Roughing the Passer to see if there is something new to teach in those regards #swarmfbchat
A1: We look at things we didn’t do well in tough games, that’s part of our base offense and defense. Was it a schematic flaw or a personnel issue that needs to be addressed? #swarmfbchat
A1. Last season I looked at 3rd/4th down convo against us, total run/pass yds per play, comp %, number of take aways. Will compare to this year & look for improvement. Continue to see correlation between drills & game play. Improve on needed areas.
#swarmfbchat
Q2: Are you already thinking about switching up the defensive scheme for next year? Will you do this based on personnel of returning players or something more philosophical? #swarmfbchat
A2: We are going to change our scheme based on both personnel and where we struggled vs our better competition. I've never been afraid of change - it's all about presenting it to the kids so they can grasp it. #swarmfbchat
A2: too early to tell, we try and do some professional development and see what we can add or tweak to make what we do better. We have a very open minded staff that researches and learns from as many people as we can #swarmfbchat
For us it deals mostly with personal. We are a small enrollment school so we have to figure out the best defense that gets our better players on the field. Our current defense allows us to be flexible with fronts as well. #swarmfbchat
A2: Started running quarters mid season. Usually run Cover 3. Will go into next season running both. Sounds bad, but I don't plan my defense around which players we'll have. #swarmfbchat
A1: How do I grade my players tackles better?
Everything from how they tracked the ball carrier to how they connected with the ball carrier to the finish of the tackle.
Then start thinking about how that would impact off-season work. @USAFootballMT#swarmfbchat
Q1: What do you look at specifically as you self-assess? Is it player improvement? Statistics (team/individual)? Team growth? Play-calling/schematics? Anything you use to help assess (template/checklist)?
A2: already looking at changes, started the Monday after the season ended. More player skill driven. Won't change basic structure, but try to find better ways to utilize skills. #swarmfbchat
A2: not an overall but getting better at communicating from sideline to field and continuous improvement on playing pass coverage, db life is not easy #swarmfbchat
A2 Like to keep the philosophy first before scheme. We look to be a run stop/physical defense. If personnel dictates may need to change the scheme to get the best athletes on the field. #jimmiesandjoes#swarmfbchat
We really only had 6 d lineman, they all played O and 1 got hurt. We had to run a 3 man front. Didn't want to have to adjust mid season, so we just went with the odd. #swarmfbchat
Q4: In your position groups, what is something you feel needs to be addressed at the beginning of next season? Any new drills or points of emphasis you'd focus on more? #swarmfbchat
Always start with Run Fits. Work DL then move to the back end. I think the most important thing to look at is what do you want your philosophy to be and make sure both pieces match that #swarmfbchat
Looking for dedicated assistant coaches if anyone is interested. 45 minutes south of Ft Wayne. Might have some teaching openings. Tons of career opportunities nearby though. Rebuilding a football program. Won States in 01 and semis in 08! Gmose@swraiders.com #swarmfbchat
A1: Just made a cutup of explosive plays (15 yards +). What did we do bad, how can we fix, scrap it? Change practice plans to get better? What areas did we struggle? Certain Formations cause us problems? Etc #swarmfbchat
Q3: always looking for better ways to teach and help our players tackle better. Looking for drills to help our defensive backs in pass coverage more as well. Both were things we struggled with on defense this year. #swarmfbchat
A4: make sure alignment, assignment, techniques te solid for all positions, then verbiage is on same page so we can communicate effectively, ownership... more coaches getting on board and installing things for team, not just me #swarmfbchat
A2 Try to keep everything simple for our kids while becoming more diverse and able to handle the different offenses we see. Trying to overhaul vocabulary so everything staff says is the same. #swarmfbchat
We just finished our 2nd season in the 4-2-5 and we grew a ton from year 1 to 2. We will continue to study and grow in our defense. No overhaul for us. #swarmfbchat
A4: we're graduating a large senior class and have a lot of unknowns. It's back to the basics and start working with this new group and working as a strong unit. #swarmfbchat
A4: i would say scheme knowledge as a whole. I want our players to understand why we ask them to do certain things, allowing them to play faster and know that if they do not make the play, they allowed someone else on the D to make it. #swarmfbchat
A3.)I’ll adress: Mentality wins pre-snap. We will know the routes pre-snap at all times. We finished with 10 INT’s between my 2 FRESHMAN. I want no less than 14. No new drills unless I pick one up at a clinic #swarmFBChat
Q4: How do you increase player football IQ? What about with young assistants or yourself? Can the increase in IQ result in faster more confident defensive play? #swarmfbchat
Q4: Watch film and talk to them about the offenses tendencies. Honestly, this is something we need to get better at. After our game on Friday we watch our game film that Saturday morning and discuss the mistakes and good things we did. #swarmfbchat
A4. Formation Recognition. Knowing the play before the snap and filling the gap before the RB gets the ball. Break down if every play they’ve ran in a specific formation. #SwarmFBChat
A4: coaches- meet and keep learning and growing as a staff. Players- we have a lot of multi sportkids so we let them go, but come spring and summer we will share hudl Installs and playlists with them to get them to start thinking football again #swarmfbchat
Q4: A team with a high IQ can make them really dangerous. Can make an average player into a good player and a good player into a great player #swarmfbchat
A4B: Very old school. Draw it up on the whiteboard, kids have a pencil and paper and they copy it down. Something about writing it down really locks it into the brain. #swarmfbchat
A5: I look no further than our own offense, I sit down with our OC and learn as much as a can from him, why does he do certain things, what are they looking at when calling certain plays, if I can learn it I can pass the information on to my guys #swarmfbchat
A4: Best way is to stay consistent, and work to use tactile, visual, and verbal ways to teach. Build with Indy, group/pod and team times. ROME WASNT BUILT IN A DAY approach. #swarmfbchat
Q4: we talk a lot about how we are going to align to different formations and what their offense wants to do out of those formations. Top runs and passes. #swarmfbchat
A4)Yes, you can, I feel that we teach football all week long. Our kids need to know why we are doing what we are doing. Guided film study helps, too. Monday is slow, almost all teaching, Tues we go quicker, teach but let them "figure it out" Wednesday it make sense #swarmfbchat
Q4: Draw it up on Hudl playbook. Create a install so players can look on there on their own time. Go over it as a team. Then in Indy discuss it more specifically. Then group then team again. #swarmfbchat
A5: During the season we limit their access to film also the only thing come Sunday night they have access to is the top run to Pass concepts from the other team. I want them to focus on the next appointment not watching highlights from previous weeks #swarmfbchat
A4: making sure players and staff use the same common language is huge early.
That comes down to having a unified language team wide.
Ex: 1 coach shouldnt call it spilling and another call it wrong arming, that's confusing for players and makes analysis harder. #swarmfbchat
Q4: In your position groups, what is something you feel needs to be addressed at the beginning of next season? Any new drills or points of emphasis you'd focus on more? #swarmfbchat
Q5: FINAL Q: Clinic season is approaching – what are you most interested in learning about? Any clinics you’ve been to that are CAN’T MISS that you recommend to the group? #swarmfbchat
A4. Increase IQ & confidence though game plans & Hudl film sessions. If they know what is coming, they play faster & more physical.
Intro basics on whiteboard & I put together a Google slide playbook. #swarmfbchat
A5: think glazier clinics are the best big clinics but getting together with other staffs throughout the offseason is a great learning tool. #swarmfbchat
Q5.) We are hitting up Glaizer Clinics again. I also am interested in going to Tennessee to hear Pruitt speak (unbiased). I want to learn anything you’re willing to throw my way #SwarmFBChat
Shameless plug...I am available to come speak with your school/clinic/staff if interested! I've had a number of wonderful experiences speaking across the country over the years. DM me for more info. #swarmfbchat
A5)Never been to a bad clinic. Love see old friends, making new ones, building a better bond with our staff. I did really enjoy the Salt Lake City clinic last year, @cqmiller4 did a great job, I know he will again this year. #swarmfbchat
Q5: Go to the Michigan Coaches Clinic. I really like it because it’s mostly other HS coaches that speak at it. College stuff is great but sometimes not realistic for what you can do at HS. Will also go to the Indiana Coaches Clinic. Will watch the AFCA clinic online #swarmfbchat
A5: Split Coverages - more options to defend in the secondary. Getting in touch with more HS and College coaches learn what people are doing #swarmfbchat
A5: RPO and Power Read scheme never know when you might gain knowledge to better stop it. I always look at pattern-match, never pull the trigger. All of them are fun, from the back room hangouts to the multi-million dollar corporate clinics. Get better. #swarmfbchat
Before we lose you - thanks for taking time to participate in tonight's #swarmfbchat You can always send me topic suggestions or individual questions you'd like to see asked.
A5: Nebraska coaches clinic, would love to listen to Don Brown, learn more about RPOs, quick game, jet sweep, wide zone; 3 over 3 under blitzes, blending 3-4 & 4-2-5. ST drills and schemes. New drills in general. #swarmfbchat
