A weekly half hour chat focused on improving access to education for PK-12 students through the use of Accessible Educational Materials (AEM), Universal Design for Learning (UDL), and Assistive Technology (AT).
Hi Everyone! I am Rachel Herron! I specialize in AEM, AT and Emotional Disabilities! I am pleased to be moderating for the PATINS Project chat tonight! #PatinsIcam
I'm Vicki, PATINS Specialist for DHH and Transitions Primary Age and interested in the architecture of your lessons plans. Why do you do what you do? Is UDL for U? #PatinsIcam
A1: It's important and NECESSARY to be mindful of ALL students while creating lesson plans so ur classroom is nothing less than equitable education/independent access. #PatinsIcam
A1: But first. You have to believe UDL is vital. Just in case ur Ss or someone u know doesnt think so, pls share this TED talk. https://t.co/fqMTriV5Uj#PatinsIcam
A1: Because ALL Ss deserve to be included fully in all aspects of educational programming and curriculum w as little "modifying" as possible! #PatinsIcam
A2: I think one of the biggest concerns is the ability to change the space to meet the needs of the lessons. It needs to be comfortable and changeable.#PatinsIcam
Q3: Why is it important to get to know your students on a more personal level including their interests, needs, family life, hobbies, etc. and how do you do so?#PatinsIcam
A1: Consider how to build relationships WHILE thinking of ways for engagement, representation, action/expression #PatinsIcam Relationship building is so very important to even begin to make the lesson
A2: Think about safe spaces for Ss to de-escalate while still being in the room. Make considerations for as many senses as possible, including smell #PatinsIcam
A2: Consider how to build relationships WHILE thinking of ways for engagement, representation, action/expression #PatinsIcam Relationship building is so very important to even begin to make the lesson
A3: Engagement is FAR more effective when you know your Ss on a more personal level. And w/out engagement, not much else really matters in the learning process. (beyond safety) #PatinsIcam
A3: It contributes to your ability to create engaging moments for students, but more importantly the relationship built with each student facilitates creating a space where they feel comfortable to learn. #PatinsIcam
A3: UDL is completely about the needs of the students...and knowing them better helps guide what you provide as a T! What a fabulous journey! #PatinsIcam
A3: It allows you to bring in your student's fascinations/interests into the classroom to make it more meaningful & engaging #PatinsIcam#givehimthewhale
Q4: Some students may require Specialized Formats (digital text, digital audio, braille, captioning, large print, etc) of materials as documented in their IEPs. How do you find and secure these formats?#PatinsIcam
A3: UDL is a great way to consider options for all Ss, includingthose in the margins. Knowing your Ss is a way to personalize this learning. #PatinsIcam
A3: it was easy in speech therapy, I wanted them to talk! I've seen teachers use strategies like 2x10 to turn lives around https://t.co/0wc1Ub7B9u#PatinsIcam
I like the 2x10 strategy because it's flexible and appropriate for students of any age, spending time to "talk" can mean any number of things #PatinsIcam
Q5: Why is it important to include other educators and service providers including: SpEd or Gen Ed Ts, SLPs, OTs, etc, in your lesson planning? How do you get them involved?#PatinsIcam
A4: ICAM of course https://t.co/JMR32B0unP However, when thinking of #UDL allowing Ss to use text to speech, etc if they so choose if that is how they learn best..to excel beyond what they are already doing #PatinsIcam
2 minutes over 10 days of a personal conversation with a student about whatever interests them, it's amazing how seemingly little things can be so powerful to engage and build trust! #PatinsIcam
A4: finding the path to provide Ss with accessible materials can take a variety of journeys but it should be about what the Ss need not how we can get it #PatinsIcam
A5: It is so hard to get things done when a student is being taken out by other educators to meet specific needs. A student can really loose a lot of time that way. By including them in the plan, everyone gains time and purpose. #PatinsIcam
A5: Everything I ever learned about lesson planning I learned from @jlfahlbush while creating a UDL lesson plan. No one teaches SLPs about lesson planning, it was eye opening! I know a lot about adapting curriculum, but there's a lot that goes into developing it #PatinsIcam
A5: we all need to work together to bring our expertise and passions to meet student needs...our solutions as adults are not always the best #hardlessons#PatinsIcam
I was totally just thinking about this experience too! Thanks to you, I learned about Peardeck and the Content Connectors, & Tar Heel Reader, just to name a few! #PatinsIcam
Great Q..qualifying print disability is a start...even if Ss do not have an IEP...sometimes the simplicity of just asking "how do you learn best?" is powerful 4 them & showing them ways to self advocate because they will develop an understanding of how they learn #PatinsIcam
and more importantly, LEAs have responsibility to make materials accessible to ALL Ss regardless of the presence of an identified Print Disability. #PatinsIcam
To continue this...we can help with the understanding and implementation of Indiana's #dyslexia SB217 As well as supporting students with appropriate AT considerations #PatinsIcam
A8: providing AAC as a means for receptive language (modeling it to the students) like a large core word display, changing instruction so that it is descriptive (using AAC's core words) and not prescriptive so students learn how to communicate #PatinsIcam
Q10: Did you know PATINS has a UDL lesson plan creator on our website? If you've used it, please talk about your experience. If not, please share other helpful templates or strategies for creating a UDL lesson.#PatinsIcam
A9: Once again, including students in this process is SO important. What makes sense to them and how can they best show their knowledge and understanding? #PatinsIcam
