Are you a first timer?
It's fun & easy to jump right in & share your thoughts or ask more Qs! Here's how...
Qs drop as Q1...Q2...& you answer A1...A2...
Don't forget to include #EduGladiators hashtag & follow @EduGladiators where ALL of our Qs drop from!
Morning, #edugladiators. I'm Brian. I teach middle-school students English in Colorado. It's nice to see bits of daylight this morning, for a change, days getting longer, though the number of hours for putting in work will always remain some portion of 24.
Amanda from SC. I gladiate for students by always intently watching interactions. I’m looking for moments to celebrate, moments to intervene, and moments to connect. #edugladiators
Good morning #edugladiators! Sandy- instructional coach from West Jordan, Utah
I've been missing for awhile but soooo happy to be back amongst friends. Love learning with you!
Top of the morning to you all. I'm Tami, an international T down in Mexico (originally from California). I'm a little late due to some important thing I had to do called make coffee. #edugladiators
A1: best thing is it pushes us to engage more on anger. We often avoid anger as a society because “whiteness is politeness.” #EduGladiators#isaidwhatisaid

A1 It has put awareness on the front burner. Ppl are now more aware, and responsive about issues that have always been there but not always acknowledged. #edugladiators
A1. The current political rhetoric forces us to recognize, acknowledge, talk about, and ACT in response to social injustice. We all know we're not where we want to be, and the issues are in our face where we have to deal with them! #edugladiators
Good morning! 😊 A1: Often the political rhetoric is self-serving, when it comes to issues of social justice...a lot of talk to get support, but very limited action to ‘enact’ what is supposedly believed as important! #edugladiators
#EduGladiators - A1 -
Worst - It empowers those who want to separate us and highlight our differences.
Best - It puts a spotlight on issues of equality that we thought were solved, but we still need to actively fight for equity and social justice every day in our classrooms.
A1: Worst - it is making us keenly aware that we have a longggggg way to go a lot of systemic changes to make to find true justice for all.*
Best - *see above. As odd as it is, you can’t fix it unless you identify it.
#EduGladiators
A1 - I don’t know how to answer this question. And frankly, I think that’s a great place to start. I feel like what we need is a lot more humility and teachable hearts. The climate appears foward-thinking and yet, it seems really stuck. I just want to learn. #edugladiators
A1. I do not focus on things outside my control - we focus on how we can make school amazing for those within our walls and how we control our actions and attitudes. #edugladiators
A1- puts the conversation and inequality right in our face to talk about it, however sometimes that causes more of a divide of “haves” having/wanting more and the “have nots” being pushed out or to little rooms #EduGladiators
A1. The narrative has overlooked the importance of addressing inequity. Instead, the conversation has focused on high stakes accountability & consequences for schools/educators (pay for performance). We need to address inequity & the inputs that impact outputs 1st. #EduGladiators
A1: Best thing is hopefully it will bring more awareness to inequities in our education system. The worst thing is that it brings more awareness to injustices to inequities in our education system. There is still so much work to do. #edugladiators
Humility and teachable hearts for who? That’s a question I have. For many, they’ve HAD humility for a long time. And it’s been unrecognized. #edugladiators
A1: The worst=People listening to only one side of an issue and not really analyzing it.
The best=Opportunity to teach Ss media literacy so that the can navigate those tricky waters of rhetoric. #EduGladiators
A1) I feel like society is taking steps backwards in things said & done. Then I see the amazing people young to experienced making the conversations needed happen so we can move forward!! #EduGLadiators
A1: Worst - it is making us keenly aware that we have a longggggg way to go a lot of systemic changes to make to find true justice for all.*
Best - *see above. As odd as it is, you can’t fix it unless you identify it.
#EduGladiators
Worst- shows the ugliness of humanity. Best- allows for people to change, and realize that silence perpetuates problems or gives a false impression that issues are resolved. #edugladiators
While more privileged folks have had to confront the stark realities of their own privilege + the associated systemic injustices, getting folks to take ownership + move toward action in their own spaces remains a challenge, as it requires divesting from privilege. #EduGladiators

A1: It’s the worst time b/c so many groups & identities have been publicly disparaged, & equity is being openly challenged. It’s the best time because there are so many opportunities to engage in authentic learning & to give students voice on real, current issues. #EduGladiators
A1: Best: It’s exposing conversations that need to be had. Worst: Sometimes the information is false (like from paid bots) and it can be difficult to discern what is real and what is not #EduGladiators
A1: Although it is very difficult times, it is showing people who think racism, sexism, or other injustices don't exist that they definitely do. It forces us to think about these issues, ourselves, our experiences, and our biases. #edugladiators
A1: Because the majority of folks still don't vote. You need more people who go to the polls to enact change. As things get more passionate, you will see more voting. #edugladiators

Totally agree Matt! Equity & Diveristy still remain as the 🐘 in the room and taboo to really dive into in too many places. We have to talk about it! #EduGladiators
A1. The rhetoric is focused on the symptoms and not the root causes-achievement gap, 3rd grade reading scores, etc. are symptoms of inequity and poverty. If we want to change those we have to address the root causes. It’s like taking an aspirin for an infection. 🤷🏾♀️ #EduGladiators
A1: It has called greater attention to how much injustice still exists and how much work remains. Can’tfix what we can’t face. But what we have to face is so overwhelming at times, it’s hard to know where to begin. #EduGladiators
I’m chewing on though how there isn’t accountability to do that. Without the accountability, I don’t have data to give me hope it will change. Just my reflection #EduGladiators
A1 It forces us to stop, think, and take action! When there is discussion and discourse people are finally opening the floor to acknowledging the reality! We have major equity issues! #edugladiators
A1: Looking on the bright side first... today’s rhetoric is causing conversations to occur that many would typically avoid. We have the opportunity to impact racism, sexism, anti Semitism for the future generations. #EduGladiators
A1: Worst - it is making us keenly aware that we have a longggggg way to go a lot of systemic changes to make to find true justice for all.*
Best - *see above. As odd as it is, you can’t fix it unless you identify it.
#EduGladiators
A1. It seems that more people are becoming aware of the hatred being spewed in our country and they are being more introspective in their own thoughts and behaviors. It has us thinking about how we think and act toward others. #EduGladiators
A1 Generation of rhetoric suggests hearts, minds focused on topic, speaking up about it; rhetoric itself doesn't guarantee action. Recalls Frederick Douglass phrase used as title of @MattRKay book: "not light, but fire." Rhetoric is sometimes former w/o latter. #edugladiators
We’ve had accountability for years....has anything changed? We still have an achievement gap. We still know that there is a gap in achievement between White children and our Brown and Black children and children of poverty. A focus on outputs doesn’t change inputs.#edugladiators
A1. We always have to look at our “current realty”, whether its good, bad, or ugly. In this case we are seeing concerning issues and conversations taking place within society. We are now seeing these issues impacting our schools and they are adversely affecting us #edugladiators
Can you give a specific example. Again; trying to wrap my mind here. How do your black students get resources and efforts so they are treated with respect and given the same opportunities as white students? #edugladiators
We had a VERY interesting letter to the editor in our local paper this week calling out issues & how they have been perceived by those with authority. Fascinating. #EduGladiators
A2. Our admin in our district is having unconscious bias training to help ensure we give all stakeholders equity within the school experience. #edugladiators
Love this thought! I'm reading and soaking up all of the goodness in #edugladiators Sometimes a chat just turns into an opportunity to read and learn from others :)
A1)Best b/c it's putting a fire underneath ppl and making us feel again; We realize we rn't there yet,& it impassions us once again;worse b/c we really haven't come as far as we thought;worst b/c weRseeing the real ugly that is out there&the good fight will b hrdr. #edugladiators
A2: We need to not cover up the stereotypes, but break them open. Students need to see the problems and then we need to show them actions they could take to solve them. Allow the students to write letters, respond, and take a stand. #edugladiators
In reply to
@EduGladiators, @PaulONeill1972, @D4Griffin3, @BrendanFetters, @mgrosstaylor, @Rdene915, @Maverikedu12, @cskiles80, @SaneeBell, @mccoyderek
I think folks get equity at a conceptual level (+ may even support it), but when it starts to impact them + the required shifts in the status quo are seismic, they start to back away. This is especially true in education. #EduGladiators
#edugladiators - A2 - It’s important to remember that equity isn’t equality and that everyone isn’t going to come in with the tools to be successful in your class. Start teaching with a personalized approach because each and every student learns differently.
We’ve had some accountability; but you just pointed out- where is the accountability over the achievement gap? The data is there, but we (let me be clear; white folx) aren’t demanding change. #EduGladiators
A2: We can’t be afraid to ask our Ss questions about their identities, cultures, and beliefs. This better equips us to know how to connect with Ss in the classroom and how to prepare content that is culturally relevant. #edugladiators
A2. I have been more intentional about being aware of the impact my decisions have on the teachers and students. Their questions and responses inform my policy making, implementation, and delivery. #EduGladiators
A2 - Have the hard conversations! Build a safe space for Ss to be free to share - start it young! We say hard stuff in 1st and it’s 💓💓. I think if more politicians were six-yrs-old things could be really beautiful. Plus, there would be a lot more Mac n chz! #edugladiators
A2: you hold everyone to the same expectations! Students will remain in a fixed mindset state if you are constantly looking outward rather than inward. Ts and Admin have to be careful because there is a fine line! #EduGladiators
I'm Brandon - high school teacher from VA - sorry to be late! A1: I think the current events in our world encourage us to create an equity lense in our decision making - ensuring ALL of our students have an opportunity for success in the future. #edugladiators
A1. Measuring something often won’t change the results-but that’s the mindset we are stuck in when it comes to education accountability. We keep weighing the pig instead changing the diet. We need to shift our attention to the inputs and the outputs will change. #EduGladiators
A1: Although it is very difficult times, it is showing people who think racism, sexism, or other injustices don't exist that they definitely do. It forces us to think about these issues, ourselves, our experiences, and our biases. #edugladiators
Have you addressed the achievement gap? The discipline rates? How do various students feel about their safety? Do trans students feel as safe in your school as cis students? That’s where my mind goes #EduGladiators
A1: The frustrating part of today’s rhetoric is giving the illusion of hate being acceptable. Every human inherently knows this is untrue but many are being taught by environment with the “well if our leaders can...” #EduGladiators
A1 Akin to best & worst angle of Q1 is how our brains often rely on heuristics/schema. Plus is efficiency, minus is bias -- whether explicit or implicit. In settings where we notice that shortcut, pause & consider longer ways to more revealing understanding. #edugladiators
A2 Tough Q w/ tougher answers. We have to be ready to acknowledge our own biases-both implicit & explicit- for effective change. Just throwing $ at an achievement gap w/out true self evaluation won't change anything. #EduGladiators
A2 We have got to intentionally focus on our relationships with our SS - actually listening to who they are and what they bring to the table. We have to eliminate having a deficit mindset, and instead encourage them in their strengths, showing that they have value. #EduGladiators
Right! How much of the achievement gap is because of racist systems like grading + because we use assessments that ask the wrong questions to get the same tired answers? It's not that students of color know less, schools don't value their literacies + knowledges. #EduGladiators
A2. We need to educate our students. Step in and teach and re-teach when we see those teachable moments. I have a 0 tolerance and I make that expectation very clear. #edugladiators
A2. Celebrate ALL our students' uniqueness! Acknowledge and overcome our own implicit biases, and lead the path for our team to break through those fixed mindsets that are even stronger as a group. #edugladiators
A2: We all must acknowledge the challenges are different for minorities & we can’t be lulled in false sense of progress w/out intentionally taking action to level the playing field. That’s what #MLK fought for. Freedom isn’t enough in a country built on division. #EduGladiators
where is the accountability? Where is the transparency on that work? Its great you are in process; what gains have you achieved in the past 5 years? That would be important to communicate. Again; not trying to be difficult, applying this to my own world #edugladiators
A2: only a minor step, & one I always fall back on, but we have to talk to each other. In my room kids talk to each other every day through Smiles & Frowns. When we talk, we can know. When we know, we can connect. When we connect, we can chip away at stereotypes #EduGladiators
#EduGladiators - A3 - We all know we need to recruit more diverse educators so that teachers look more like the Ss they serve. But what are we doing to educate the current veteran educators in #equity and #socialjustice in the meantime?
Agreed. Is this because people are inherently selfish? Adult learning theory tells us that the first thought in any new learning is how and why is this important to me, but the TRUTH is we all benefit from a more educated citizenry and equity can help us with that. #edugladiators
A2: We can avoid reinforcing cultural stereotypes by welcoming and celebrating all cultures in our classrooms...embracing diversity and inclusivity has so much to do with educating ourselves to the realities of our global community & truly listening to each other. #EduGladiators
A2: We must first identify our stereotypes and reflect on why we have them. Then we have to be courageous enough to take action to change and influence change around us. #edugladiators
A2) Making a safe environment where hard conversations can be held. Practicing respect & admitting mistakes. Don’t push aside learning experiences. #edugladiators
A2) You have to CHECK yourself (your thoughts, your own beliefs, your reasons 4 doing/saying & the why); Know ur Ss & educate urself; have high expectations for all Ss. #edugladiators
A2: In my classroom we speak openly about inequity and privilege: how to recognize it and take action. I ensure my students hear from diverse voices: students, experts, texts, and videos. #EduGladiators
A3: Have teachers and administrators go out into the community and collect the problems various organizations have. When you see the true heartbeat of a community you can see what you are up against in your own backyard and feel motivated to offer solutions to help. #edugladiators
In reply to
@EduGladiators, @PaulONeill1972, @D4Griffin3, @BrendanFetters, @mgrosstaylor, @Rdene915, @Maverikedu12, @cskiles80, @SaneeBell, @mccoyderek
I’m also reflecting that we are only as accountable as is socially acceptable. We only do enough to check the box so we don’t have to worry about it. There isn’t true accountability to do the work. Just do “enough.” #edugladiators
A3) We need to make sure that we develop empathy. Take the time to feel what another person is feeling. I have grown in this area by asking myself, how would I feel if this happened to me? #edugladiators
A3: We need to include SJ classes in our T prep courses. When I received my first MED I had to take a course on ethics. We are not equipping Ts to have similar foundations. The only thing required unilaterally is S teaching and we know the problems with that... #edugladiators
A3- create a culture of social justice champions and a school that stands for equality and inspiration- shameless plug, but in my book “Power of Us” I share how school culture drives success- so create a culture that supports and promotes social justice #EduGladiators
The achievement gap is rooted in other gaps outside of the school building-inequity in housing, healthcare, employment, & more. These things fuel the achievement gap, yet we treat it as an isolated variable.Changing grading practices won’t fix systemic oppression. #edugladiators
A2. Breaking down barriers begins with getting to know people & spending time with them. Stock your classroom with books that share the personal experiences of diverse individuals. #edugladiators
The problem is we measure and forget. If the pig is gaining weight over five years, and our programs were designed to lose weight, what happens? It seems like nothing happens, because we don’t look at this over a period of time #edugladiators
Recent @GLSEN data shows that LGBTQ+ students are feeling increasingly unsafe in school + a lack of representation + inclusive curriculum might be to blame. I wrote about the issue + offered some possible solutions. #EduGladiatorshttps://t.co/M4aJMkzi6U
A3 This is where being an EduGladiator is SO important! We have to be strong enough to stand up & speak out against the injustices as we see & hear them. And sometimes that means calling out your superiors. But kids must always come first!! #EduGladiators
A2: Hard but necessary to establish a cultures that accepts all cultures and embracing diversity. A noble truth that can be difficult to enact. First start with nipping the negative culture slurs in the bud. No jokes about another race, derogative statements, nada. #EduGladiators
A3: I think the biggest thing is to educate Ts that even if socio-political issues don't impact them directly, there are Ss who are effected by today's political climate. We must be aware of how our worldview may differ from our Ss. #edugladiators
As in all things in Education - it's about relationships! When you have relationships with your students you can learn from them and understand their perspectives. And you might be surprised at whet you learn...
#edugladiators
A2: We can’t be afraid to ask our Ss questions about their identities, cultures, and beliefs. This better equips us to know how to connect with Ss in the classroom and how to prepare content that is culturally relevant. #edugladiators
A3 cont'd. Being INVITED on to a school's Advisory Board helped me see how I can support teachers in their classrooms. Ss are engaged in learning and that gives teachers some relief & direction. #EduGladiators
A2: Every student and class will need a different approach. I think of the Passover 4 children anaology... One was wise, one was wicked, one was simple, and one was silent. Each needs a different response to “Why?” https://t.co/fsEPLWoflF#EduGladiators
Leaders are suppose to serve as agents of change, not the gatekeepers if the #StatusQuo. What evidence do we have that supports creating inclusive communities that celebrate diversity and equity? #edugladiators
A2: We can’t be afraid to ask our Ss questions about their identities, cultures, and beliefs. This better equips us to know how to connect with Ss in the classroom and how to prepare content that is culturally relevant. #edugladiators
A3. Engaging intentional PD that continuously supports #equity and #socialjustice in instruction, in building classroom culture, in establishing a school community who embraces equity and a growth mindset. #edugladiators
A3: I think we have to try our best to find people who love kids & demonstrate a desire to form relationships. Once we see they are "all in" for ALL kids, we can teach them to support social justice in our school. This issue isn't always taught, so we may have to. #EduGladiators
A3: Educators must be willing to “gladiate” for their staff, students, and stakeholders. Avoiding an issue permits it to grow like a cancer. We must be brave & bold and do what’s best for our school communities. #EduGladiators
We don’t forget. We lack courage to address the root causes of inequity: bigotry, bias, prejudice, racism. Instead we talk about cultural relevance...which isn’t a bad thing but the fact that it is a needed conversation says so very much. #edugladiators
A2. When Ss fail to engage with others, stereotypes/misconceptions can flourish. Let Ss practice asking questions to increase their comfort level, help them avoid preconceived notions & give them the means to build relationships with diverse individuals. #edugladiators
@latoyadixon5 - I’m reflecting on the chasm between real accountability and what passes for “accountability” on the front lines. I think I see where you are coming from. #edugladiators
A3+ - Also, when you get invited to a students’ ________ , GO! Get to know their lives in a personal way! Invest. The payoff will be your blessing as much as their blessing! #justgotothegame#edugladiators
We also need to be aware that including more people of color in education doesn't mean that you have diverse body of thinking. As many grow and assimilate we have cultural expectations that many minorities fail to meet (good or bad).
A3: Recruit, prepare and support not just new teachers, but veteran teachers, by challenging them to think & act in ways that embrace the reality of the diversity in which we serve & live...we cannot be islands...we are better BECAUSE of our diversity & uniqueness. #EduGladiators
Leaders are suppose to serve as agents of change, not the gatekeepers if the #StatusQuo. What evidence do we have that supports creating inclusive communities that celebrate diversity and equity? #edugladiators
So. I’m chewing on how true accountability would drive us to stop and say “whoa. We don’t have a clue here how to fix it. Maybe we should listen to those who are impacted on how to solve it.” We do NOT do this. #EduGladiators
I model the behavior I'd like to see. I celebrate my students and the minority communities they represent. I learn from my students what is important to them. Listen & learn...
#edugladiators
A4: I speak up and question things. It is not easy, but necessary. The other day I questioned my company's holiday policy, and change was made to it. #edugladiators
A3 via more Qs: To what extent is this work avoided/overlooked vs. lost in confused seas of other work? Maybe I'm giving in to stereotype of overworked educators, yet I see re-prioritizing opportunity. How might equity efforts as North Star align other work? #edugladiators
A3: you can recruit that which is not there. There are teacher shortages across America. We need programs that support the barriers facing all young folks going into the profession. Dr. Bell at OSU is starting a great program next fall to support this. Finally, we
#edugladiators
A4: Started fighting back issues in the community. My students decided to take on the issue of domestic violence that was covered up in the community. We are in the process of raising funds for a SAFE house. https://t.co/puS0kRRLS2#edugladiators

A4. As we fundraise, we ask individuals how they participate in addressing social injustice within the schools. Marching is wonderful but showing up in a classroom AND NOT TOLERATING injustice OR talking about how your company impacts injustice is key. #EduGladiators

A4: As with anything else we do, to do better, we need to know better by learning, growing, and sharing. If we don't share, then we can't impact those around us who aren't actively participating. Not addressing issues w/status quo is same as agreeing with it. #EduGladiators
A3: Just as we promote and try to develop the “whole child” and well rounded students, we need to do the same with educational leaders... #EduGladiators
I’ve no idea. Seems there’s no simple answer. I try to imagine what that might look like, and I can’t see it. Sure we can do PD and probably should, but can that really dismantle? The answer has to transcend such things I believe, and that seems beyond us at times #EduGladiators
A3: It needs to addressed at staff meetings and in service days on an ongoing basis. It should be part of a school staff’s core values. It’s not a one and done training. #edugladiators
A4: I've run book clubs on #ForWhiteFolks, This is Not a Test by @TheJLV, and Between the World and Me by Ta-Nehisi Coates. We're going to read Troublemakers by @CarlaShalaby next. #edugladiators
A4: I think hosting the #LeadingEquity podcast and sharing the content with my colleagues has not only helped me become a better advocate, it has also provided a larger reach to individual seeking to promote equity and social justice in their classrooms #edugladiators
A3)Making sure we are having these conversations as a staff. Examining our own mindsets & realize they are not fixed. We need to nurture those future educators from the moment they enter school. #edugladiators
A4: This is a newly developed mission within my district, one that we are going to be focusing intentionally on very soon! I have read a few books that have challenged my perspective of others recently and have been sharing those with colleagues.#EduGladiators
A2. The feedback Ts give to Ss provides a wealth of opportunity to reduce stereotype threat. One effective method of feedback is to emphasize that you hold all Ss to high standards and to assure them that they all have the capability to meet those standards. #edugladiators
Yes! To paraphrase Jay Z: a lot of people are skipping leg day just to run their mouths. It's hot to talk about equity + social justice right now + that's cool, but that talk needs some real-deal action on these root causes if we want to close achievement gaps. #EduGladiators
Absolutely agree - sharing all types of students identities is critical- we can’t prioritize or celebrate one over others - or others over one... #EduGladiators
I always like the evidence part-
It's easy to say that you're doing something but without the evidence then maybe the story that you're telling yourself isn't exactly backed up by your actions.
Actions matter! #EduGladiators
A3) I think we have to lead by example, make sure we exert our voices on this matter (speak up, run workshops, speak at staff meetings, etc.). Put together a committee of persons at ur school who r dedicated to this & who can help. #edugladiators
A4. I have stopped being quiet about my personal experiences with inequities. I have started telling my truth. It has really opened up my colleagues eyes about what really goes on and how lives are affected. #EduGladiators
Or should the system be restructured so that barriers to access and opportunity are eliminated? This should not fall solely on the educators. Systems need to be built to be inclusive. #EduGladiators
A4 cont'd. Part of our pilot leadership vetting process includes convo / training re: addressing social injustice. It's part of being a leader in any space and we equip our pilots to seize that opportunity. #EduGladiators
A3. Question reminds me of what a then school security guard now school principal said to me years ago. “I can only see myself teaching in an all white school.” #edugladiators
To quote the great Ronnie Coleman, "A lot of people wanna be bodybuilders...but nobody wants to lift those heavy weights!" Talk is cheap! #edugladiators

There's a difference between sporadic equity training + teachers viewing all aspects of their work through an equity lens (hire + retain these people!). Truly excellent, thoughtful PD might help people start down that road, but it probably won't move mountains. #EduGladiators
A4: collaborating with other teachers on ways in which to incorporate social justice and equity in all areas of the curriculum. Also, bringing closer school and community #EduGladiators

Moving mountains by teaspoonfuls, requires lots of people & spoons. Not to mention patience, perseverance. Cue Margaret Mead: “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed, citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.” #edugladiators
A2: its important to know where your kids come from but to keep in mind that it doesn't define who they are. To be able to understand another is perspective. But perspective is an evolving tool that moves us to richer understanding.
#EduGladiators
Thanks, #edugladiators, for this morning's round of digital work. Best to all of you in carrying momentum to subsequent brick & mortar, face-to-face locales.

Carrying a focus on organically incorporating all of these skills into our daily instruction is essential for teaching the whole child. Nothing in our community exists in isolation #EduGladiators
There are some things we should teach kids that have nothing to do w/reading, writing, or problem solving, but are still keys in life. How to:
🗝Have manners
🗝Be respectful
🗝Be a good listener
🗝Speak well
🗝Be empathetic
🗝Be sympathetic
🗝Serve others
🗝Be kind
🗝Be a friend
A1: it's sad because the truth of how people view others is coming to the surface in all its ugly forms. The good is new voices are emerging that fight against the ugliness and stand against it.
#EduGladiators
