Welcome to #MakeItReal! Thanks for joining us tonight! Give a quick introduction and drop in your favorite GIF to use :)
I'm Denis, host of the chat and author of Instant Relevance!
This is Michael A. from #122edchat in Chicago. @SmartLab_tweets#STEM Facilitator. Seriously need to get cracking on coursework, so it might be a super short visit, #makeitreal.
A1: When we connect with what people are truly passionate about, the energy in the air is palatable. What makes it even better is when we honor their passions and give them space to explore and develop greater understanding. #makeitreal
A1: our dept applied (and received) a grant for flexible seating and our students have really been loving it and respecting the space since they’ve been back from winter break. Forgot the #MakeItReal
A1: Finding ways to connect what they love with what I need them to learn. If I can find that sweet spot of learning, then we definitely have a spark of joy! Baring that, smiles and laughter can help grammar go down a bit easier. :) #MakeItReal
We had a kid in class who is building a '72 ElCamino with his dad on the weekends. He asked if he could build the same truck in @tinkercad and give it to his dad as a surprise. How could I say no? As a dad myself, this is pure gold. He is honoring his dad's passion. #makeitreal
A1 I see so much joy when students connect with others for authentic learning experiences like #mysteryskype or virtual field trips! To honor it- allow for these opportunities often. #makeitreal
Our 7th Grade is PACKED with "makers". Had one of my boys stop by to show me this mask he made out of cardboard. It had a retractable shield. I was floored. #makeitreal
For me it’s thinking too much that everything needs to be a certain way. This is my 2nd year teaching and this semester I’m trying to be more confident in all I’ve learned and deliver it with enthusiasm to my students #MakeItReal
A2: Finally said good bye, so far this entire year, to worksheets. Not to say all are evil, & they served a purpose, but now there are so many better ways to help them connect and practice their learning. Know better. Do better. #MakeItReal
A2: Parents who think their child is a diva and want school to provide special foods for their child. Umm, no! If you want your child to have all-natural, grass-fed, no preservatives, food, you're going to have to pack their lunch. End of rant! #MakeItReal
I loved the story that you shared the other day with #4OCFpln about how you used #gamification to get a breakthrough with your 20-boy vs. 3-girl class. #makeitreal
Q3: Instant Relevance leverages what brings us joy NOW to #MakeItReal for our students. How do you Use Today’s Joy-Filled Experiences To Teach Tomorrow’s Lessons?
Thanks! Took a bit of heat for it, but 20 17-18 year old boys in that class with only 3 girls is quite a handful for even me! Had to be pretty inventive and have to keep changing it up! :) #MakeItReal#4ocfpln

What doesn't spark joy ... thinking that in order to be a good teacher I have to redo everything to make it "better" ... if the kids like it and it works I say let it roll! #makeitreal
I was following along with you. I just didn't get to chime in. Made sense to me. Their "sweetspot" was gaming. They hate to lose...if you swear, talk about whatnot, the consequence is subtracted health points. You were speaking their language. The Ss got it. #4OCFpln#makeitreal
I think the true things that bring us joy are not things that change. (Friendship/ relationships/ success/ etc.) The specific examples change but joy does not. #MakeItReal

A3 Know/learn student interests and what engages them! If it’s Fortnite or Pusheen or Harry Potter- find a way to leverage those interests. #MakeItReal
Great lens for seeing this through. Relationships bring joy, so seek them.
Games and fun bring joy, so find them.
Newness and nostalgia bring joy, so make room for both. Great insight Tara #MakeItReal
A3: This Friday I'm combining fascination w/upcoming Mardi Gras, dances, & Masque of the Red Death by Edgar Allen Poe. Ss were told to bring masks on Friday, I'll have my DJ lights (maybe fog machine), music, & dancing. Surprise! "Red Death" comes out of the closet. #MakeItReal
I don't think everything has to be joy-filled ... but they have to be relevant. I teach US History and many of the topics are less than joyful, but when I can link them to the kids it makes it worth learning. #makeitreal
A3: Take their “ah-ha” moments & their interests & sneak them into lively lessons with active learning & adventure. Surprise them! Learn their dances! Take risks! Name spelling groups after their favorite movie/game/novel characters/places/schools. Have fun! #MakeItReal
Well, we bought some equipment with our band money. Figured we could do some DJ gigs on the side when we weren't performing. Already have a sound system so it made sense to add lights. Fog machine was for fun really, but it's awesome. We do local school stuff mainly. #MakeItReal
