A1 Content and language objective written in student friendly format w/ picture support.
. A1: objectives, gradual release parts (I do/we do/you do), assessment, materials, differentiation
A1: When we lesson we include the activity, objective, and the guideline that it addresses.
Yes! https://t.co/5OyJ9yMmzD
Thank you! I love learning with you too! I want to learn and grow so my little ones can learn and grow too!
A1: content along with Iowa Core standard and a student friendly "I Can" statement. Ss love knowing what they're going to learn
standards, hook, objectives, lesson focus, skill practice, culminating activity, assessment, closure. This is 4 a lesson
A1 Every lesson plan must BEGIN with the intended learning outcome, yes? How detailed do you get in planning the lesson itself?
A1: I also like to include questions that I will ask Ss to encourage higher level thinking.
Generally, I like to see objective/activities in a lesson plan.
Almost missed it but I made it! Hello from Texas.
Where do you get the questions you ask? https://t.co/r3CsBQR3Cy
A1: I also like to include questions that I will ask Ss to encourage higher level thinking.
A1 - Questions that elicit student thinking - along with strategies that make that thinking visible.
A1. Essential question, objective, materials/resources, opportunities for questioning & hands on work.
A1 gradual release of responsibility is a must: model, guide, facilitate!
A1: 2 elements I'm focusing on this year are variety of assessments & differentiating for learning styles/needs/interests
. the lesson plan is for me. I do make mine detailed but I prep before lesson so I don't have to use them.
A1 I like lesson plans that are replicable. We use a common framework so teachers can benefit from each other's work.
Joining late Tim, principal in Batavia, IL
A1- Lesson plans may vary. I look for embedded literacy elements, student engagement opportunities and differentiated instruction.
A1: I forgot to include the essential question!!! Super important! Something we're really focusing on right now! โค๏ธ
Itโs always great to learn together with you Abbi.
A1. I also include differentiation strategies, activities, etc. It makes me cognizant of the strategies I am using with my kiddos.
What a powerful way to keep the lesson focused and challenge student thinking! https://t.co/hvE0MX0hlt
A1: I forgot to include the essential question!!! Super important! Something we're really focusing on right now! โค๏ธ
A1 You've really got to pay attention to the intended learning outcomes - from planning through execution - to reach success!
Yes! Makes life so simple. Except with inquiry/self discovery
do u let your lesson plan stay open sometimes the kids will lead u somewhere else
A1: Few "requirements" Focus TEKS, Vocab, Activities, Product, Assessment...Ts can personalize to their liking
Intentionality is such a critical component to a successful lesson! https://t.co/qAZdpO9psP
A1 You've really got to pay attention to the intended learning outcomes - from planning through execution - to reach success!
Welcome Abe! so glad to learn w/ you tonight on
A1. I like to include a reflecting part. We usually do it with journal writing (drawing) or orally.
Welcome Kevin. Great to connect w you on tonight.
A1: I like to write the intended outcomes as goals to discuss w/ Ss and use "I can" statements
A1 As a P, I never collected lesson plans (unless it was necessary) - I visited to see which path each T took to reach the goal
How do u leave yours lesson plans open so children can lead the learning?
We use a template and have a "no excuses" checklist so we don't leave out anything important. https://t.co/PzAJCooOF3
A1 I like lesson plans that are replicable. We use a common framework so teachers can benefit from each other's work.
Reflection! Now you're speaking my language. We have to help students make their thinking visible! https://t.co/r6g4UdPFqO
A1. I like to include a reflecting part. We usually do it with journal writing (drawing) or orally.
We are honored you are staying up late for
Q2 Think back to a lesson you taught today: Why did you choose the instructional strategy you used? https://t.co/00h41ZwQoe
A1 I like to include all the elements mentioned, but I try to make the hook something that makes them think and helps them focus
Yes! Reflection solidifies the learning and allows Ss to transfer anything new to long-term memory. https://t.co/g8620ljcDa
A1. I like to include a reflecting part. We usually do it with journal writing (drawing) or orally.
A2. A math lesson that focused on movement, repetition of counting sequence and problem solving. It was engaging for Ss.
A1: Objective, Small description, Initials to show which children I am Individually planning for and a place to reflect
I'm amazed at how Ts write objs for adults and not for their Ss. Keep it simple and focused on learning.
An amazing PreK teacher @ my school created kid friendly I Can statements that corrilate w our guidelines.
A1 I also read to my Ss what the lesson is about w/ Simon Sinek's golden circles leadership idea...start w/ the WHY
A2- Consider which instructional strategy will best make student thinking visible.
A2 I modeled hallway supervision - stand in the middle of the hall; if you stand on the wall, you will blend in with the decor
Reflection is a very important part of the lesson cycle. https://t.co/NmMUoqtfBl
A1. I like to include a reflecting part. We usually do it with journal writing (drawing) or orally.
A2. I also use instructional strategies that allow access for all Ss in a way that is manageable for them.
. A2: Rdng: Main Idea; used GR to model thinking. Not a new skill just refined how it's done.
RT Q2 Think back to a lesson you taught today: Why did you choose the instructional strategy you used? https://t.co/PEd43brWfh
A1 We always start with the PLC question "What do we want the students to know?โ
That what I talking about
Follow-up to Q2: And are you aware of multiple options for instructional strategies? How intentionally do you pick?
A2: Differentiated, I had three different classes today and had to present the same info different ways
would love to see some of those!
A2: We read "Pinkalicious" to really engage the Ss in a lesson on word choice. So important to find fun things for Ss to relate to
A2 Art lesson in selfportraits. In small groups we learned about portrait techniques. Then had students draw their friends.
I didn't write a plan today but I did visit every classroom on our first day of school. That WAS the plan.
Welcome Tim!! We are always glad you are here.
A2: We took a book walk today and I modeled a think aloud to teach vocabulary... "I wonder what the word predator means..."
Did you read about techniques, model them, view examples, or something else? How did you pick? https://t.co/WswRL8OnQD
A2 Art lesson in selfportraits. In small groups we learned about portrait techniques. Then had students draw their friends.
. A2: Good one! Trial and error and really knowing your kids and content.
Iโm curious, how many of you all plan for your essential questions in your lesson planning process??? https://t.co/9cJfIrQcpq
A1: I forgot to include the essential question!!! Super important! Something we're really focusing on right now! โค๏ธ
A2: ChatterPix of 3D shapes to make learning visible
Love the think aloud model. Do your Ss model their thinking?
That is the only way to teach and my kids love that book. Actually just read it to my kids before bed
hi & old friends ! Sorry I'm late. happy to be joining now. I'm a kinder teacher in Lake Tahoe, NV
I do it now that I am teaching 3rd,4th and 5th grade
We do! It's a non negotiable at my site. https://t.co/N05tI8aljF

What a terrific practice of planning your questioning ahead of time!
Such an important part of the planning!
we viewed examples and modeled techniques to students. We diversified instruction to address Ss diff learning needs.
that better then any lesson plan!
A2. I used cross curriculum teaching during my daily news. We do phonics, math, letter recognition, and critical thinking.
Ooh, non-negotiables! Love it. So what % of teachers do so because they're told, and what % are committed? https://t.co/z1lNaRyzJd
We do! It's a non negotiable at my site. https://t.co/N05tI8aljF

A true mark of a master teacher! https://t.co/1Q7IseM54F
A1. I also include differentiation strategies, activities, etc. It makes me cognizant of the strategies I am using with my kiddos.
Not yet, as it is only the 3rd wk of school. Hoping we get there! I am teaching with questioning with sentence stems.
. A3: the students and how they answer question and daily reflection
That's a great question!! I know for me some content areas I am more committed to do an EQ for over others!
I'm here but late . AR Teacher of the Year here ready to learn and collaborate with you guys!
I figured it's still early but you are planting seeds. Keep it up!
A3 If students can demonstrate mastery, or growth towards mastery, of the content and language objective then I've succeeded.
A3: Exit tickets, pair and share, s observation, progress growth.
It was effective if the students could answer the questions, talk about what they learned to a friend and then want to learn more
Our lesson plan nonnegotiables were created by our teachers themselves. https://t.co/uqHDk9BQUT
Ooh, non-negotiables! Love it. So what % of teachers do so because they're told, and what % are committed? https://t.co/z1lNaRyzJd

Follow-up to Q3: Do you plan for assessing student learning in advance, or off the cuff as it happens?
great point-do you offer differing ways to show understanding?
A3 Ss walk us through their thinking process. This works well for us as materials are self-correcting.
Can you share your framework? Or was it based on your school mission? Or instructional model?
A3- You can't determine lesson effectiveness better than listening to students share their thinking aloud.
So glad you could join tonight Meghan ; )
. A3: it depends. We read our obj together and my first ? is usually tell me what you know. Helps with misconceptions
A3: I use this to have Ss write what they learned and why it was important in their own words https://t.co/hfzXbViQdH
A3 How do you keep track of that? Especially as we get older and our memories begin to fade... :( https://t.co/ukT94Jz8Mh
A3- You can't determine lesson effectiveness better than listening to students share their thinking aloud.
SOOOOOO TRUE! You know you were effective when they share the learning outside of the classroom.
The assessment is part of the planning. We also have performance tasks. https://t.co/NbWKawmb6A
Follow-up to Q3: Do you plan for assessing student learning in advance, or off the cuff as it happens?
so awesome! That is great to see students reflecting on their learning!
A3: observation & assessment. Did they meet the goal I had in mind in the beginning ? Can they teach it to someone else? Etc.
the assessment has to be related to the learning goal, and it helps when it is planned in advance.
A3: When students internalize the learning and apply it in other settings
A3. When I speak to a parent and they tell me that their child couldn't stop talking about what they learned.
A3 I pull small groups and assess knowledge by observing. I've found it hard to "assess" unless it's a fun, engaging & playful
Great Q. I believe there has to be a plan for formative assessment. A failure to plan is a plan for failure https://t.co/pHB9bTSe6s
Follow-up to Q3: Do you plan for assessing student learning in advance, or off the cuff as it happens?
Is that something you look for in your class? Do you note or record that somewhere? Seems like imp't info https://t.co/k6gNeExJO5
A3: When students internalize the learning and apply it in other settings
such a great perspective not to be forgotten.
For me it's not always about writing it down. Ive seen teachers use a checklist though.
Know the purpose of the assessment : diagnostic (formative) or evaluative (summative) ? https://t.co/KGWRX4BU0W
Follow-up to Q3: Do you plan for assessing student learning in advance, or off the cuff as it happens?
I always have a plan, but it often will change throughout the lesson- but I have something to start!
A3. When Ss can connect to it! Whether to themselves or other content learned. Also when Ss apply it! That's a true measure.
A4 Go near to the student & teach them in a different way; use a different strategy, technique, material, or approach.
Agreed! If I'm assessing lesson effectiveness in this moment, listening to conversation may be enough. https://t.co/6WOLwGFwC9
For me it's not always about writing it down. Ive seen teachers use a checklist though.
A3 look on student's face tells me a lot, can they answer Qs, can they discuss it, & do they want to know more? Curious = learning
A4 we may present the idea in a different way. Or teach it through the lens of their interests.
A4: Talk to them and see what ?'s they might have... Sometimes it's just a simple misunderstanding. Move forward from that convo
I've been using this year & loving it! The kids are learning how to audio annotate their work.
A4.Observe! I want to provide scaffolding just in time NOT just in case. Sometimes just in case scaffolding makes Ss feel defeated.
A4 I may adjust the pace, ask more guiding questions, add more examples and/or provide more time and opporunities for practice.
A4 We have to be pretty clear what it should look/sound like when students "get" it, first, right?
A4 . Reteach the skill differently, provide multiple ways for Ss to practice the skill.
A4 Meet the student at their level; make engaging; teach in different way.
A4. Look for the true root of the struggle & provide scaffolding for that. At times Ss just need support at one point in process.
A4: Sit down one on one with them and have convos with them to see if I can clarify. Maybe find another way to present the lesson
Iโm not seeing words like โdifferentiatedโ or โindividualizedโ Do you think those are fads that are weakening?
A4. Pause and patience. Sometimes wait time can increase confidence + provide time 4self-advocacy https://t.co/OpBJOGbmcm
A4: Check for understanding of the task, revisit concrete ways to review concept
A4. I find different ways to present the material. I engage Ss in things they like as a vehicle for the content.
A4 ask questions; find out if it is a misconception or misunderstanding or lack of background, etc
A4 That's going to cause us to examine the THINKING behind each student's DOING... dig deeper! :) https://t.co/RZMcQzQLt6
A4. Look for the true root of the struggle & provide scaffolding for that. At times Ss just need support at one point in process.
. A4: reteach, rephrase, scaffold
A4- Pose Q's and listen carefully. Too often we assume to know the struggle S are having. Great wisdom found in asking Q's first.
Iโm a BIG fan of teacher created common formative assessments, tightly aligned to the taught standards. https://t.co/890A298xAd
the assessment has to be related to the learning goal, and it helps when it is planned in advance.
A4 also important to provide relevance to the Ss to spark interest in learning the specific skill.
I hope not! I think that's so critical for good learning outcomes.
A4 I ask Qs and listen to Ss who struggle.
Oh I โค๏ธ this. I usually beat them with "I think you chose this because" or I just ask them
I still use those terms - and it's critical that we WORK with those terms in mind. Meet each student's needs.
It really depends on the student At the beg of the year, I want to see how they react We learn each other as time passes
A4: Identify misconceptions,and/or skills not mastered. Small group instructions.
So, donโt you think itโs interesting that in a chat about lesson plans, those words are not appearing?
Yes, when the learning is applied & generalized into other content areas or experiences. https://t.co/d42WXb4X6b
A3: When students internalize the learning and apply it in other settings
Great response! Sometimes we rush in too quickly.
Man, I'm loving your questions!! Great follow ups & forcing us to think deep!
Q4 stop, look & listen. Partner up with other Ss, do 1:1 intervention, re-teach another way, find missing link in learning
we have had success with small group guided instructions especially with math as our primary Ts continually regroup Ss
A4 for preK & for ELLs/DLLs you canโt assume anything about their learning without individual conversations https://t.co/nG1NfB8hNP
A4 I ask Qs and listen to Ss who struggle.
You'd have to perform a text analysis of the transcript to know that for sure. Are you concerned about it?
BINGO!!! https://t.co/7Fvj1qXatY
A3. When I speak to a parent and they tell me that their child couldn't stop talking about what they learned.
"Just in time not just in case". https://t.co/hXokA8FHn7
A4.Observe! I want to provide scaffolding just in time NOT just in case. Sometimes just in case scaffolding makes Ss feel defeated.
Just trying to differentiate the learning experience for each of you! :) https://t.co/joyACoGbln
Man, I'm loving your questions!! Great follow ups & forcing us to think deep!
This chat tonight is OUTSTANDING!!! I'm on like my fourth or fifth page of notes already!!!
A4 Try to define the struggle and then listen to the student's point of view if possible seek outside help if necessary
I'm wondering if those are more automatic in EC, as well as more generic.
Concern: differentiated learning is considered best practice, but is so hard to do that itโs not happening? https://t.co/xQQmSWTF0m
You'd have to perform a text analysis of the transcript to know that for sure. Are you concerned about it?
A4 take some time to work with that s 1on1 or in a small group to find or work through the misconception https://t.co/1Xl6eaW4qS
I worked with two outstanding Ts and who did a great job with this
A5 Valid concern. And in our immediate interventions we might find more differentiation occurring!
What a great point
https://t.co/86HZjezxXV
A4.Observe! I want to provide scaffolding just in time NOT just in case. Sometimes just in case scaffolding makes Ss feel defeated.
A5. I research! I look for instructional strategies that are research based. I involve novelty, a concept taught a new way is new!
Agree! https://t.co/EulFhf7GI3
A5 Valid concern. And in our immediate interventions we might find more differentiation occurring!
A5 By planning small groups or pairing up certain SS. Have additional resources readily available, manipulatives, charts, etc.
If the struggle is behavior it may be beneficial to talk to family about changes at home for possible reason
. A5: gotta be ready with diff ways to teach (content and/or process); it's definitely hard.
A5 We can only plan in-the-moment interventions if we're clear about the target, know success, assess learning, & have plans ready!
I'm an aspiring ECE teacher so I could use some solid notes in this area. Happy is providing me that tonight!!
Why do some wait when the diff can be intentional and not reactive?
A5 I shared this earlier Ts using guided math structure to support students. Groups are flexible so teacher can respond to Ss need
A5: I have a set time for SG inst. on my plans, this is where I use my observational notes, so I can work with S that are strugl.
A5: making notes/observations to look for patterns to plan more effectively. I stay on top of my PD to learn new strategies!
A5 one of most common struggles for Ts b/c you have to have a wealth of tools on your toolbelt
A5: Lots of small groups! Activities I know will help struggling Ss. Sometimes they'll surprise you and you just have to wing it
. Is it for current material or prerequisites based on where they are...seems like grouping would change daily.
Great question! Some misconceptions can be predicted; others surprise us (darn kids!). https://t.co/2ByY2C4aNA
Why do some wait when the diff can be intentional and not reactive?
A5 Differentiated or individualized instruction is at the heart of on-th-spot interventions.
Q5 Sometimes my planning comes with reflection & gets incorporated next day via differentiated activities.
A5- For interventions to be effective, we must know our students deeply. https://t.co/jkakCFVk0e
. A5: gotta be ready with diff ways to teach (content and/or process); it's definitely hard.
Its so hard to know what's going to happen.
Well-put! https://t.co/y9HE8NGMbG
Q5 Sometimes my planning comes with reflection & gets incorporated next day via differentiated activities.
And address their THINKING. Get into that spongy gray matter between their ears!
Q6 What % of Ss must master a standard or make progress for you to consider the lesson a success? https://t.co/lq3KVWjlPn
Q5 There are times you have to make a child feel like the only student in a room. Their learning is top priority. Get on Ss level
A5 I use incline rope model in my lessons and plan for the "casual performer & the gifted athlete.
A6 Or what % must struggle for you to consider the lesson a failure?
A6 Most dangerous pronoun in education: THEY. As in, "They didn't get it today," or "They nailed this concept!" Who is "they"?
Teachers have to KNOW their Who & their What to intervene successfully in-the-moment. https://t.co/WpjKETPvH3
A5 We can only plan in-the-moment interventions if we're clear about the target, know success, assess learning, & have plans ready!
A6: In every Ts ๐ they are saying 100%. Bus this realistic?
A6- Success is individualized - just like learning. It has to be viewed in the same light. https://t.co/Fw7KLnOovD
Q6 What % of Ss must master a standard or make progress for you to consider the lesson a success? https://t.co/lq3KVWjlPn
True but we know when learning happens and how it might look, sound, etc., no?
A5 Stock toolbox with strategies/ideas from EC mags, observing other Ts, EC organizations
. A6: I don't have a set number. If I'm teaching it all week my goal isn't daily mastery but progress towards it.
maybe consider mastery as a continuum. We all will get there, just not at the same time or with the same lesson.
RT Q6 What % of S's must master a standard or make progress for you to consider the lesson a success? https://t.co/2YjUv3FXmL
YES!!! https://t.co/8o9paKXpxn
Q5 There are times you have to make a child feel like the only student in a room. Their learning is top priority. Get on Ss level
A6: Tough one! If Ss have academic choice to demonstrate learning, can that be quantifiable?
My goal isn't daily mastery but progress toward it https://t.co/SylOXz09Sz
. A6: I don't have a set number. If I'm teaching it all week my goal isn't daily mastery but progress towards it.
A6: I think all Ss should make progress but not everyone can obtain mastery. If you know your Ss you know they did their best!
Yes. hard to be prepared about each thing they may not get. I start next day with ?s to check
And not on the same day or in the same way https://t.co/oPxm6vmOv2
maybe consider mastery as a continuum. We all will get there, just not at the same time or with the same lesson.
Thank you for joining tonight. Remember to follow the awesome friends that you connected with tonight!
Isn't this what we are aiming for? Growth for all Ss and providing multiple times for Ss to show their learning
Be on the lookout for the archive of tonight's chat. Thanks again for joining You all made it terrific! https://t.co/0eYAYcMzHX
Do you Vox? DM or to be added to the Voxer group.
Do you Vox? DM or to be added to the Voxer group.
that should be great! I will put that in my calendar!
