#aussieED Archive
#aussieED was founded on the belief that all teachers, and students, should have unlimited access to Professional Development, on their own terms, to improve their teaching, their schools and change the lives of the students they encounter. Since then, we have embarked on a mission to reach educators, not only in Australia but, all around the globe. We want to smash the barriers that prevent teachers from easily connecting and learning with each other. To that end, we have developed a regular Ed-chat each Sunday on twitter at #aussieED. The chat allows all teachers, leaders, administrators and all those connected with education to meet on an unbiased platform and discuss the real issues that effect what happens in classrooms everywhere. Our chats are authentic because we are real teachers walking the same walk that so many do everyday.

Hi
Carl here from Emerald, Vic
I used to be the guy in a school who had to try and work out the whole digital thing once
Absolutely Agree! Very explicit teaching must happen, both for Ss and families, and sch needs to do it. https://t.co/kFUYucE3IQ
develop strong & trusting rships btw home/school is imperative too. We must know what our Ss are doing online
Let's kick off with an important Q. If you could only take 1 platform to a deserted digital island, which would it be?
Welcome to tonight guest host introduce yourself & share what SM app you wld need to survive on a deserted island?
Reddit for sure. Such a fantastic platform for discussion and sharing of ideas.
Great warm up question for tonight https://t.co/BCHhoNvcpk
Let's kick off with an important Q. If you could only take 1 platform to a deserted digital island, which would it be?
Morning lovely crew, Graham from the UK..would have to be Twitter to keep up to date with the ed world https://t.co/Ony1Sb7r3e
A1a/ A balanced, healthy relationship with & digital devices. Using tech as a servant, not allowing it to become a master.
Hi - Kelly from Sydney here :) I'd stick with Twitter - keep in touch with my peeps & the footy (even if we lose!) LOL
Hi, Anna here. Hmm, my one SM app would probably be either Twitter or What’sApp.
A1. Digital wellbeing? I guess making sure you can disconnect and not be dependant on your online life.
Hi all. Matt from Perth. If I could take one SM app it would have to be app. Because I can link lots of SM to it!
Hi Leonie from Charleville Distance ed. Am I allowed to say AO3?
tweeps plz follow & introduce yourself! https://t.co/hAYTuJ59Ia
Let's kick off with an important Q. If you could only take 1 platform to a deserted digital island, which would it be?
Hi ....would have to be Twitter....much more informative than any other platform.
Angela - preservice! I'd take instagram for sure! Just to make sure I can take some photos of this island paradise.
I'd keep my AM radio so I could listen to the news... Talk back radio, the original social media network!!!
And to keep up with those killer dance moves!
Hi Steve from Coonabarabran, obvious answer is Twitter but maybe something geared to weather reports and survival needs? :)
this is hard. is great because it keeps up with trends but I would say
A1: Dean from Melb - Insta my daily digest of aesthetic pleasure
Jodi from Sydney. I like FB but prefer Twitter for PLN
Agree and balancing that w/ non-tech and getting away completely from tech occasionally https://t.co/thd7jbrc37
A1a/ A balanced, healthy relationship with & digital devices. Using tech as a servant, not allowing it to become a master.
Hi everyone. Twitter for me cos I don't really use any others 😊
My fav app is the meteorology one, lol https://t.co/KSuxM2hhcT
Hi Steve from Coonabarabran, obvious answer is Twitter but maybe something geared to weather reports and survival needs? :)
Hi , Jon from Perth here, 1 SM - if it were a tropical island, I'd be too busy fishing, but .. does TED or netflix count?
Showing your age their Brett!! Remember when you would leave the room to avoid the news as a kid?
.Hi Leonie here from Hastings NZ. Definitely Twitter
Hi - Bernadette from Melbourne. I'd bring Facebook
Karen from Sydney. Have 2 B Twitter. It would help 2 keep my brain engaged as well as social.
What’s AM radio? Is that like an 8-track? :P
A1. Bob, MS Prin in Maine, USA, would be 1, but I'm learning more about everyday.
Howdy from Cairns via Brisbane . I would literally not cope without Podcasts, particularly Kermode
Hi Loreyse from Brisbane - Twitter is my no 1 SM app these days but have had a ton of fun this holiday with my girls on Musical.ly
Q1a I don't know that's why I'm here 😀
Just call me old man Salakas -- https://t.co/0cS4TP3BL7
Showing your age their Brett!! Remember when you would leave the room to avoid the news as a kid?
a1 safe responsible & ethical use of the internet. A big call and one our ss need clear instruction to execute
Hi all, Roxanne from Melbourne. I would take Snapchat because I'd have all the time in the world to learn how to use it!
You can follow what you like on Twitter...survival needs, I'm sure there is a # for that
A1 Twitter because more teachers are on here than any other SM & we always have something to talk about https://t.co/GR4q4Z2Hkz
A1. Dig. nutrition = you in control. Not the device/soc. media
Kia Ora from West Auckland - twitter wins my vote
Nice answer! Must admit Ћ batteries would last. Luv my talkback 2 https://t.co/MqX6y3ldRy
I'd keep my AM radio so I could listen to the news... Talk back radio, the original social media network!!!
A1a. The ability for people to limit how, why and when we should use the digital world everyday / supporting mental wellbeing
Instagram. Can keep up with friends and family without all the noise.
Hi, Tam from Nth QLD. Twitter is my 1st choice. I could ask people across the globe for help/recipes for tropical cocktails. :)
Hi all! In Year 12. Tough one. Railpage forum. Seriously though, it would be a tough choice between Twitter and Reddit.
Good evening I believe Twitter is my platform of choice https://t.co/ap8V2bl7FS
Great warm up question for tonight https://t.co/BCHhoNvcpk
Let's kick off with an important Q. If you could only take 1 platform to a deserted digital island, which would it be?
Dan from Tokyo, I'll take snapchat. those filters and face morphs will pass the time!
Digital wellbeing would is more of a tightrope if you don't have a social media supportive team at school
I think is looking after your personal health, relationships and work in digital settings.
- Lucky we're going to have a Summit later in the year! Its the little sibling to !
A1a: a balance of virtual and real life - digital health
A1/ I think is respect of the power that we can have over others within the digital environment.
Hi, Ines from Germany. Teacher, mentor.
Hi Jasmine, North Queensland Teacher. Facebook- has a bit of everything to keep me entertained.
A1b/ Keep in mind there's tonnes on like but what are purely about avoiding ?
Has anyone defined Digital Well Being?
Forgot to introduce myself. Adam from Sunshine Coast.
Hi Trav from Brisvegas Q1 Facebook to stay in touch with fam & friends + most importantly NBA updates
A1: Looking after your own wellbeing by using social media for its intended purpose, and knowing when to step away.
A2. I don't think we do for dig. nutrition. Might need to tap into that!
Interesting topic today For me it is new, so I'm more a reader and learner.
A1 Digital wellbeing is simply being in control of what you access and when so that it doesn't make you anxious or depressed
A1 , Digital Wellbeing - not to be a troll or responding to trolls. Look what happened to poor Tay when it went online.
Unfortunately my father has one that runs on a winder!! Can never escape the ABC!!
1a. It's about keeping a balance in your digital life, keeping perspective, knowing when to switch on & off.
Hi everyone, Dione from SE Qld. I would stick with Twitter ... So many topics to keep me entertained.
Hi Karen from Bowen North Qld here. I think I would take flipboard as it has all my favourite sites etc saved.
Or is it like those tin can thingies with string attached?
A1b. Coming from a university perspective - I haven't seen enough! Nothing to support students to set boundaries and know limits
A1: Not sure yet, still forming understanding of digital learning/literacy + social concepts of wellbeing.
A1 Digital wellbeing - understdg the medium; making good choices so technology enhances lrg, work, life w/out negative impact
A1(a): TBH I am not sure. But I imagine something like the healthy eating pyramid for technology! Health food v Fast food for tech
Digital wellbeing - balanced user - balanced with real life
1a. So in many respects no different to wellbeing in any other aspect of life. Just with bonus digital confusion.
Jen from Wollongong. I'd do without methinks.
Digital well being means a healthy understanding of the power of tech.
LOL! you know they are quite fun to use in readers corners!
Cameron from Melbourne, currently updated my blog from day 2 of
geez - moving fast tonight!!
Part of it has to be not letting technology have an unbalanced influence on oneself.
There's moments when devices seem to me to be anti-social devices, for family and at school, or is it just me?
the new live feature is great
A1 I have never given digital well being a thought till tonight! I guess the big one is to remember to disconnect...occasionally!
1b. Sport? (only half joking, activities offline help keep digital life in balance).
A1 Digital wellbeing is about having the common sense of knowing when to say yes, no, later & doing so.
Indeed, its all about wellbeing, fullstop. The digital bit is the lens we look through https://t.co/PER73dG7vS
1a. So in many respects no different to wellbeing in any other aspect of life. Just with bonus digital confusion.
A1 definitely Twitter. For the past 14 months, it has helped me as an educator, leader & woman of faith https://t.co/Bg83h1d7WK
Let's kick off with an important Q. If you could only take 1 platform to a deserted digital island, which would it be?
A1: Knowing your limits with technology. Too much of one thing is bad. Everyone has a different too much. Need a ratio.
A1b/ If you're in primary schools talk to Dr Kristy Goodwin (aka ) about her programs.
Q1 is learning when to let the digital world go and embrace the tactile world.
the digital license is a great program
Programs such as Cyber Safety and class discussions are important when addressing .
A1: I guess dig well being has to do with balance and taking care of your cyber self and properties
Will you be going ??? I'm looking forward to it? https://t.co/Zu2IdnxKLF
Forgot to introduce myself. Adam from Sunshine Coast.
A1: Could it be about knowing when enough is enough. Knowing when to say 'no' to technology?
A1b: Good question. Being reasonably new, I couldn’t actually say, nor has it been pointed out.
Yep, apply the principles we've been teaching about healthy eating & relship to food and apply to screens! https://t.co/orAt2iRT6J
A1(a): TBH I am not sure. But I imagine something like the healthy eating pyramid for technology! Health food v Fast food for tech
A1b There is nothing in my school and we run all of our lessons through web conferencing!! Oops!!
- well said - moderation and keeping perspective so time off line!!
A1b a good integration of tech in the CR, remembering that tech is still only a tool used in what we want our Ss to learn
A 1b. I don't think there is enough. So many platforms that stds use. Replicating the same "friends"/conversations across them all
A1 - Digital Wellbeing is being able to balance the use of technology and being able to connect with family and friends
Hi. I'm Martin interloping from my surprisingly sunny garden in the UK. 1A Sorry to be boring, but has to be Twitter.
Q2: How do we sort ‘digital candy’ from ‘digital kale’ when it comes to consumption of digital calories? https://t.co/WZjWHkCpKz
a1b not as much as we need, I fear. Digital passport program for older ss. Not much for younger grades
A1 Helen Beetham defines as acting safely and responsibly, use to participate in community, balance digital/real world.
check out for best resources and teaching ideas
A1a Is Digital Wellbeing also managing all the digital bits and bobs in your life? Ignoring the 1am email...
I could probably do that as a food teacher! Though knowing the best food and choosing the best food is tough!
A1B My school is an ‘eSmart’ school. We deliver a lot of programs on cyber safety and responsibility from junior.
completely agree. Nothing worse than seeing a gp of people all on their devices and not talking to each other.
starting at a new school tomorrow looking forward to finding out
You've gotta lot to learn girlie :D
Hi friends! Spiri from the states, G&T waking up to a beautiful Sunday, excited to join you
But that's usually subjective, like image of stds staring at phones in art gallery--but they were looking at art guide
Hey, I step away. I have slowed down this year. :)
A1b - Don't believe there is enough focus on digital wellbeing as there is on physical and mental wellbeing
Can you connect with family and friends through technology?
Is a great tool for early years to set up the basic expectations for Digital Citizenship
100%. Found myself not going forward with technology recently. Introduced train spotting to create a ratio. Better.
A1: it's one thing to think about what you post but another to be sure you're even getting the 'right' content to begin /w.
A1b is a great resource for all things Tech.
A1B we have a digital citizen agreement based on protect & respect for self/others/intellectual property https://t.co/o62E3hbmGo
Hey , just putting down a very tired 2 year old to bed! Will be a few more minutes
Q1b cyber safety resources at school - yes! Other dig wellbeing - no! Except setting up computer workstation for tchrs.
Always great to have you join us
Of course, I have family in the US that I connect through chat on FB and through Twitter now with you and others
Dig deeper and really examine the content/benefit/skill opportunity
A2: Purpose driven. Always a purpose, and a positive one at that.
1b is where parents should have more influence. It can be as simple as "no iPad after 6pm" or "you're finished for today".
Get into the bush and out of wifi range is escape for me, Ss who do our out door ed adventures suffer withdrawal 4 but cope
A1: our school is a positive ed school and we have many programmes where our students stop and appreciate
Hi , Beverly here from USA. I would take Twitter! Lots of Ts use it so something new to always learn and talk to.
A2 experience - everything new online is like the gingerbread house!
A1b hands on art classes - sometimes you've just got to switch off and paint!
Q2 I only deal with I use tools such as to save things to read later. Waste less time(except reddit/twitter)
Have two children to read to, will be back shortly :)
yes! Excited to be part of this!
A2: it's great to get the opinions of others. This padlet is a great guide to digital candy https://t.co/k2k22mdjxd
A2: it's great to get the opinions of others. This padlet is a great guide to digital candy https://t.co/3NR8MiIj5S
Lots of resources which focus on web safety, not enough on e-savvy to stop many problems developing in 1st place.
I teach our Y6 students a 7 week course about digital citizenship and online safety.
A2 I don't know much about 'digital candy' and 'digital kale' but I know Twitter is a Super Food
Hello there my friend nice to have you join us...
https://t.co/0E92wz7oAS
Hi , Beverly here from USA. I would take Twitter! Lots of Ts use it so something new to always learn and talk to.
A1. Creating a balance between time spent on a device, the impact on user/family. Creating a healthy balance.
I love the disconnect. Broke my phone and didn't get it fixed for 6 months. Best 6 months ever!
Ipads are just the new books to me. Been anti-social since 1979!
A2 Digital kale; Positive, informative, humerous, thought-provoking or useful to others.
.1 Tchng/ realising Tech is a tool.Switching off 2 not 'addicted' so other areas of yr life suffer.Tchng Ss responsibility & sense
A2. All about purpose for me. I try to make sure I stick to my purpose and not get sidetracked by irrelevant posts.
Melissa here I agree been looking at all today. Impressed
A2 We teach critical thinking and questioning using digital mediums as well as traditional questioning and inquiry techniques.
Yep, depends when & where but the playground? https://t.co/7HLnxvZQ9y
But that's usually subjective, like image of stds staring at phones in art gallery--but they were looking at art guide
A2: It's difficult bc each new piece of candy is so delicious but time sapping. Mostly I'm looking to read and learn and share
Age appropriate is huge YET we still have kids playing GTA etc! Grrr. Not at school though
A2: We need to know the difference. The rabbit hole of internet choice means good often leads to bad. Links lead to links lead to..
I love because it does exactly that from the Early Years of ed... Plus has picture book too https://t.co/DnKeLPG5d5
Lots of resources which focus on web safety, not enough on e-savvy to stop many problems developing in 1st place.
I'd love to think I'd like that! The thought sounds great...not sure about the reality!
A2 by considering why you are consuming what. Purposeful use just like within lessons with Ss
I really do. I am not familiar with the ancient ways. I should be.
We recently held an e-safety conf 4 parents & we have a committee that meets - this will be smthng to bring up
Q2 digital kale is purposeful not just consumption for its own sake
not heard of this Brett, what does it do?
That's the way forward... We have a two week boot camp at the start of each year! https://t.co/m0xZQR5TaI
I teach our Y6 students a 7 week course about digital citizenship and online safety.
A2 it's like everything in life -balance & moderation. If these are out of alignment then problems follow. https://t.co/iVyTLVgkg1
Q2: How do we sort ‘digital candy’ from ‘digital kale’ when it comes to consumption of digital calories? https://t.co/WZjWHkCpKz
A2. Teaching Ss how to use internet searches and SM to begin with is a start to find the 'kale'!
A2 I find it hard to separate what is good and bad on the internet sometimes
A2/2 Ensuring that our kale is engaging and fun will help with the sour taste.
would have to be Twitter because of the GIFs! Only one device per desert island also?! Know thy device: know thy impact!
.2.Tchng Ss to be selective, cautious & try but don't automatically accept things. Not everything is as it appears
A2) We need to see the "computer" as a machine that helps: faster, accurate, amount of data. Use to our advantage.
Is there an app that sets internet access time limits?
A1(b): Very few. We don't tend to think about it. I'd love one night a week of digital disconnect for all staff and students?
is there any other digital healthy stuff other than kale? I don't like kale :)
1b. We don't have a program yet. Students have limited access to devices at this point. Important as tech resources increase.
I am interested in this too. Started a digital literacies program across the school this yr.
A2b) of course what's wrong with a little bit of candy?
its true . Kids these days are over exposed. Is having so much access helping or harming them?
A2 - Everything in moderation - being able to keep the 'kale' from being stale and allow Ss and Ts to embrace the 'candy'
I found with my teenager knowing how 2 change Ћ wifi password very effective
What is your definition of digital candy?
A2: Take This Lollipop fastest way I get ts on board with Dig Cit I've ever seen + great resources on
You must be eating too much digital candy if you need a bootcamp? Oh dear... wrong path!
A2 digital critical literacy.Know the purpose and audience of what is being consumed. Question, analyse&try establish perspective
But one of our biggest obstacles as 1-1 laptop school. Our 'solution'. Block the lot! https://t.co/kL9IhUVSOz
Totally. Oh look, hilarious cat video! There will be no test on what fairyfloss you read on https://t.co/NPNM8DZUwz
A2: We need to know the difference. The rabbit hole of internet choice means good often leads to bad. Links lead to links lead to..
lots of discussion about moderation and screen time. Did our parents limit our reading and time playing music? Our passions?
We no longer have IT as a 'subject' so who does the responsibility of teaching these essential topics fall to?
I now tell my grown up adult children they have bad backs due to computer usage in bed!
Same with my main school......although they have a strong phone policy
A2 has a comprehensive framework that supports PBL & provides tools for schools/parents too
And how would you enforce that?
A2) Digital candy & kale can help the Learner reflect & understand their learning process better, both can break down barriers
What are we talking about ?
b/c it doesn't have to taste bad even if it's good for you?
I teach Ss how to use tech as a learning tool. Teach digital cit. w resources like and
A2. By looking deeply at the reasons behind our choice of tool. Is there a real need, will it improve the outcome? Time & place
Brilliant, but is it manageable? Those classes that see students once per week? Homework? Tough!
A2. So you're telling me I have to have a well balanced SM life too!! This is truly depressing people!! I'm a binger!!
exactly. I guess it comes down to personal taste ;)
A2 There are times for kale and times for candy. Both are ok, if you know when is appropriate. Will ask my Ss on Tuesday
What is your school's phone policy?
Great point. Depends on what is happening during screen time. Would think it should be creative over consumption.
Yeah not sure. Like a lot of 'policy' really! How do we enforce anything? Should be teaching to become more like:
apparently 'old ppl use fb' said my yr 6 student, I was like yeah - snapchat for me 🙄☺️
it's part of the school positive behaviour for learning approach - add online to it all
Yes I use this poster in my classroom as a guiding principal
A3/ Please, let's move beyond the 'good role modelling' discourse in our responses here! Amirite ?
Come, let's hang out -- will look after you
Phones are totally banned but its a BYOD school...go figure
I don't think it's manageable but anything is achievable if the moral purpose is right!
I like showing this video to our older students to show them the dangers of leaving accounts open. https://t.co/zaImxNP2a8
Will have to look at that later 5 min video and the twitter feed will be a mile long
A2: look to the signposts eg for the kale
being multidisciplinary . We are digital natives. It is apart of our everyday lives. It should be a part of our students
Tech & our Ss are inextricably linked, and will be 4ever. Our Challenge is to make this work for us as Ts and for Ss as learners.
big call! More about the implementation than anything else. Learning to use tech better!
A3: by modelling responsible use and challenging the behaviour not the technology
A1 sounds like less screen time and more outside time but not sure that I agree with that
yes that rule fascinates me too BYOD but not phones??
prob more than manageable in primary setting.
We discuss ‘if u wouldn’t do something in Ћ real world then don’t do it online.’ Guides many discussions as circumstances arise.
A3 Tech can be easily blamed, the user in the end has to learn to be responsible, this is where we help. https://t.co/uJpg82a0VV
Let's try this tweeps! there's a reason I heart you my friend! ☺️ first chat going well! 💥 https://t.co/mcrmQal0vH
A3/ Please, let's move beyond the 'good role modelling' discourse in our responses here! Amirite ?
A3 T's must teach s's to become creators rather than consumers of content.
My argument is a phone is a device
yeah I accept I am 'old'!
I can't reply without context! But I'd want to know "what" is a role model & evidence for peer/role model influence
looks good! I will have to check it out
A3 scrap acceptable use policy get a responsible use policy, focus on +ve use rather than punitive reaction.
A3 like we promote all behaviour by modelling it -they are always watching :)
A3: I had a sleep disorder (no sleep) pre tech usage, so I can blame it on that. I guess, education rather than removal of devices
Through well planned, relevant lessons with achievable goals
A3: Difficult to get a baseline on this with widening gap of dig literacy amongst Ts. I'm interested to know more on this.
A3. Through acknowledging that it exsists! The more we put on the blindfold the more Ss will push limits to get past them!
a3 explicit teaching of skills and values. Timely and consistent modelling. The teachable moments. Take them.
Also, what would you say if you had to look them in the eye and say it?
A3. As long as the learning is key the tech habits are positive. If the learning is engaging Ss in/on any platform its healthy!
A3. There have been studies come out recently to say that technology is not to blame for these things.
A3 We don't set digital homework very often at all and encourage after school sport programs and being active - even the Ts do it!
Q3 need to look at habits like when, where, how to use
A3 1st stop treating tech as a toy or game! Begin using tech to demo and model its power for learning.
Come up Jack, we will get into EDU-mischief!
.A3 By modelling showing Ss( I have Juniors). Talking about what happens as many Ss when young unaware and carefree
A3 by using tech in a healthy way in the classroom program and be explicit about the purpose of using it
A3. Hard 1 as chn already have their habits before getting to school. Learnt at home from obs adults in their life.
A3 As we move fwd we have a whole sch awareness of what a positive google footprint is & it starts w/ edn abt technology
A3. We try to use balance in our 1:1 classroom. Looking at the books this term, we weren't balanced enough.
ha it was a serious question -struggling to dip in!
Just told the wife. She is keen.
A3. Connect digital literacy & experience to the real world. What is the relevance of the skills & knowledge, how can we apply it.
A3 I always talk about pre internet days and what it was like
is now trending in USA, ranking 27
A2. Talk to students--many will know exactly what is good and bad, even if they don't always moderate (but like food, who does?)
completely agree. My aim is to become more balanced in all aspects of life. Turning of tech once in a while too
Phones = devil. Burn them. Love it when right hand doesn't quite get the left.
Q3 has to be through modelling and coaching
Beginning of the year we tweet together. Now Ss know what is appropriate and what is not.
A3: Tech is great but we must also promote healthy lifestyle. Make our children well rounded adults https://t.co/sJL27TsLlg
Do you get the parents who ask how much screen time is ok too? *facepalm* YOU are the parent!
Q3 balanced approach ourselves in pedagogy it's not all about tech. Tech-pedagogy-content as said
A3: Through activity. How we use SM influences our Ss. One of the best ways is to engage them in the conversation. Not exclude.
The language we use is very powerful
deal with the behaviour not the technology. Ss can be just as bad without tech, but add a comp in and we focus on that!
A3 Use tech to amplify learning not substitute it for f2f interaction, share egs of excessive tech use & have the discussion
yes, also model what responsible use looks like. Guidelines are made to be broken.
A3 Model appropriate use and discuss appropriate behaviour, response and attitude
how r they diff from say a tablet or ipad?
So many! I got as far as limiting my son via router, wireless switches off for him at certain times.
Its not like the kids don't have them
I always teach SS about the Google close account on all computers. Great feature 2 step authentication is also great
A3) By discussing, creating, collaborating, exploring together, learning from each other, always amazed at want my Learners know
A3 - use examples of responsible uses of tech and show ways of how it could be used for engaging learning for our Ss
Show real world examples of good/bad digital footprints. My class does a project on this.
Yes, how head spinningly quick it has progressed https://t.co/gxdHpUBNeo
A3 I always talk about pre internet days and what it was like
When your kids know you're at top of tech knowledge chain it's easy, but won't happen for too mahy.
High school is different....
Forget good role modelling, I’m the first to admit that wouldn’t work for me. Educate them.
And mistakes are opportunities for huge learning and growth (when managed correctly)!
agreed- the tech has to become a tool for learning- in many rooms it is still considered a toy or reward!
My class presents on individuals who have ruined their careers/lives due to an inappropriate use of social media.
1 thing that stood out to me at . all said the pedagogy comes before tech
we have BYOD but not phones, Ss in primary don't need them for learning
A3 Are the Wiggles still cool enough to be modelling appropriate habits? 2 yr olds now have their own SM devices1
A3 too many teachers DON'T promote positive technology use - one rule for them and another for students!
and learning that if it serves purpose it's fine. Don't use a computer when a pencil will do
A3 Model, model, model! Promote positive use through demonstration of positive behaviours
A3: Use SM in the classroom. Talk them through the dangers and show them the problems. Tricky when banned, though!
I agree, but HS to me is different. We should be teaching responsibility
A3 It appears humans can be addicted to anything. So I do not blame technology for this. Just moderation and thought!
think we are nearing the time of genuine debate about phones as learning devices. Is education ready?
A3 Tricky. When, where, how depends on a myriad of factors and each educator may have different ideas about this
Yep. Good call. Why before what. Always my go to when thinking tech!
yes BC and AD before computers & after digital you listening Anna ?
Q4a/ How can we harness the power of peer intervention/mediation to overcome problematic technology use? https://t.co/LQ6yOxmHmE
Question- Since when was it the Ts role to promote responsible usage of tech? Is that a Parental thing? https://t.co/znNZCe4qhc
A3 Difficult to expect Ts to model when they aren't digitally savvy themselves! The blind leading the seeing unfortunately!
how many teachers ignore copyright without thinking or knowing? How are students to learn this stuff if it is really hard to do?
Great share, thanks Graham!
We need to have the tough conversations. Ss need info 2 years before event to make informed decisions
I am a bad role model when it comes to usage, not purpose.
I see your point. But banning phones makes more of a fuss out of them then needs be.
https://t.co/AHaVYhVjYf
Boom - thank you! Me neither and I'm the first to admit it! I have lived experience of screwing up ! https://t.co/DZjtEq4EVM
Forget good role modelling, I’m the first to admit that wouldn’t work for me. Educate them.
It is impt to use all available technology w/ sts so they figure out what works 4 lrg & Ts can B part of discussions abt muckups
Agree with Bob Riley - s's need to use it for purpose rather than break from class
A3 The confidence with tech of the educator is also a big factor.
Much of that will depend on what "ICT" is defined as, will have to read more...
It’s easy to forget this. We should model and promote responsible use. Not necessarily dictate what it is. https://t.co/RMHU3HxIlu
Question- Since when was it the Ts role to promote responsible usage of tech? Is that a Parental thing? https://t.co/znNZCe4qhc
we're already there - or at least the kids are - just another engagement challenge
Hi - here's my virtual late note (but not signed by my mum)... I'm Justine from Wollongong. I'll jump in on Q4
I think we are all thankful there was no social media in "our day". :)
No. We want and need a partnership in education of their child, then we too are obligated to share this important role.
I read an article re that, some Ts don't know how to implement tech and need training we all do https://t.co/lA7gek1KAb
A3 too many teachers DON'T promote positive technology use - one rule for them and another for students!
No, not necessarily controlled but can be monitored
A3. There are options like Fakebook where sts create fake accounts to use in a + way. Eg make profile about an historical figure.
.OurSs have little if any tech at home they are way less than even 5 hrs as lunch play PEetc . Balance
was exactly what I thought. We had elective sheets for h/w and they often included family interaction, nature, etc
But ones that can purposefully buy clothing and pretty things too! All online.
A4a/ This is basically the topic of my Masters thesis that I'm completing at . Give me another year & I'll tell you!
True that if phones are used it needs to be learning based and appropriate. Also im HS biased
Yep agreed S different think phones can be useful
True Just have 2 keep Ћ conversation going & model. I tell Ss stories of older Ss who say- 'if I only I had remembered'
research tells Ss care more about what their friends are doing, let's tap into that
A4 like a crowd sourced rehab for bad digital citizens?
absolutely! Prefer to continue to teach "safe" by not engaging the technology at all - especially the social bits!
Of course, but schools are a place of knowledge & so often teachers will have more of it than parents with tech
Encourage use of multiple platforms. Incorporating RL and F2F interaction as well as digital interaction. https://t.co/OVTOyUoc3o
It's not. But we do because we need to. We need parents on board but Ts have a role to play
If the tech was implemented by the school, perhaps it is both? Modelling by Ts and understanding/support from parents.
And FOMO https://t.co/4XEctvdpBI
research tells Ss care more about what their friends are doing, let's tap into that
but tertiary now requires students to have this set of skills - online capabilities - so need to teach that in secondary
Do those responsible wait until there is an issue before they react and they leave the ethics for others ? https://t.co/PsaTgTbbaH
No. We want and need a partnership in education of their child, then we too are obligated to share this important role.
A4a Reinforce the ‘tell a buddy’ or have buddies keep an eye out. It is a difficult path to navigate.
A4) Kids will try things. What we have to do is make the positive things cool. Talk them up, encourage their use etc
Good call. Will sum up. People who are positive with social media and digital tech always ask why?
great way 2show kids! Saw tweets last wk of college scouts dropping potential scholarship athletes cos of their soc med
a4. Pbl. Teaching ss that friends look after each other ie caring intervention when friends r being less than their best self
Since it became our role to teacher them manners, values, swimming, bike riding ........ 😊
I don’t agree in this day and age. I feel the average age of primary parents is less than teachers.
4a. Web is built on user moderation, students understand this and can help. But "crowd" can lead to bullying too.
Many parents are addicted to their smart phones I'm one.
A4 won't work as just a school thing -needs to be backed up at home like all things educational
Aren’t we their surrogate parents though? Some teachers see more of the Ss than their parents do.
So infiltrate the friends and make what you want them to do cool https://t.co/ila3Q4Phiy
research tells Ss care more about what their friends are doing, let's tap into that
Ben from Vic, better late than ever. Catching up on some great tweets!
maybe they'll be ready for the 21st century when we're a decade into it... oh! that would be now!
Touchy subject but I think teenagers need a place to develop their sexuality in a age appropriate way https://t.co/BjBODnU5j4
So true, especially with regard to , which also gets linked into this convo bc of the p0rnography issues.
A4a We need to teach Ss what is appropriate, they see it & give them permission to seek help for others https://t.co/52bsEWML73
Q4a/ How can we harness the power of peer intervention/mediation to overcome problematic technology use? https://t.co/LQ6yOxmHmE
Have once used Instagram for an Assessment Task...very successful
That means what exactly? Always varies, but I see tech illiterate young & highly literate older.
A4. I think this becomes hard when Ss 'hide' things for fear of being blanket banned from SM /tech. Punishment is not the solution
A4. It has to be teens leading the charge to help each other, otherwise its just adults talking down at them. (1)
.By tchng responsibility, value of education & lrng online not eg candy crush or whatever the latest craze is.Hunger for lrng =resp
A4 what about peer moderation of blogging etc before publishing Seen some english Ts work well with that.
A4a - no kid wants to talk to (or listen to) adults about any issue unless there is trust. Need to show we are trusted
A4 - Encourage Ss and Ts to ask for help and collaborate with others to work though issues
Iwe're delivering/teaching curriculum using tech, responsibility lies with us to ensure safe use w Parents https://t.co/VCAF4r8Kd3
Question- Since when was it the Ts role to promote responsible usage of tech? Is that a Parental thing? https://t.co/znNZCe4qhc
Sensible to decrease no. of learners to 'teachers'. Shouldn't auto assume that mediators know what they are doing.
Not hard - teacher librarians are brilliant supports for teachers who are not sure. Plus
so many creative ways to incorporate technology in a positive way instead of letting it be used as a distraction
we must work in partnership w parents - insert global village theory here
A4 I think unplugged activities are really import to bridge these divides and develop the social aspects of IT
A4b/ IRL communication & the confidence to talk F2F about the issues & q's without fear of getting into 'trouble'.
And even with exposure often little good behaviour. I see online bullying encouraged by parents!
Is this a trick question, Brett? We could say that about most of the programs in our schools...
It takes a community!
Our school runs information nights for parents who care to come and learn. Very well received
Yes! Instead of waiting for the big bad wolf of the internet to eat us share the positivity!
a4 Parents also have to be involved in helping with this
Schools can model better behaviour, which often doesn't go hand in hand with digital use.
A4(a) Are we getting into dangerous areas? SM can be so 'forever' with digital footprint. Then again, group thinking for good?
Having a tough time following while helping Clare with Maths, having conversation with Meg and downloading todays soccer video
A4. (2) That Tv ad of family eating at table with no SM devices for example. Horrendous!! My teens laugh at its horribleness
, Christ Jesus the Lord , , ,
A4. Not sure how exactly, but if we can make is less secretive, then discussions about SM can improve understanding and + usage
how do Ss define a mistake? Or what they see as issues vs what Ts say? Often big difference in Ss concerns vs Ts
Agree. U can’t use a tool in Ћ classroom & not promote responsibility of its use. Hopefully then partnership parents
A4b: we do it's called school. Schools give so much restorative learning for Ss and let them 'mess up' in a safe environment
A4b: I think by not coming down super hard when they first screw up. They need to learn too. Being a kid is hard.
very true. teaching sex ed and sexual health and wellbeing courses to Ts. What's your take
I see anxiety from younger ones too. Too busy with early career teaching practice to put in tech?
Would like to think it is the role of ALL tech users. Teach, model and do daily. https://t.co/R2xyHsBUmp
Question- Since when was it the Ts role to promote responsible usage of tech? Is that a Parental thing? https://t.co/znNZCe4qhc
4B - I agree, as a parent I'm always discussing the dangers of tech, but also mindful of giving choices https://t.co/WsfLOb1XJq
Question- Since when was it the Ts role to promote responsible usage of tech? Is that a Parental thing? https://t.co/znNZCe4qhc
Exactly why we need to fix this!
Trouble is not all parents r responsible & do not c Ћ issues or r just uninformed
A4 b this is a hard lesson for some esp. with sxting -sometimes wish we didn't give them so much space
A5 Creating a space where they feel confident enough to talk about the things they have done
yet they probably have access at home and we need to make those connections to keep them safe online
4b. Giving them freedom is the first step and letting them make their own decisions - not always an easy path!
a4b When students have a say in the Digital Vision of a school they are much more empowered to take responsibility!
A4b Have a restorative/forgiving/safe behaviour management system that allows mistakes, growth & learning. https://t.co/HHsHwY0Pd1
Teachers, alongside parents, should work in partnership. Teachers generally more aware of current tech/influences.
A4.Its a P thing but when Ps don't tch it we have to.Like other things. Help the S dev holistically. Not their fault
We heard a bit about Ss as Digital Leaders this week from
This is something that I actually enforce, but only with the threat of said phone going in the freeezer
Kids will check out bad things. We all do. It's no different to real life. make teh positive more tasty https://t.co/taBUOczTHJ
Yes! Instead of waiting for the big bad wolf of the internet to eat us share the positivity!
4b Use tools like Edmodo, or curated blogs, or Google Classroom. Open interaction but controlled & monitored.
A4b like everything. Give them chances to practice in a safe setting. To try their digital wings w/out the harsh www audience
Great idea! https://t.co/loS4aDKQjT
Our school runs information nights for parents who care to come and learn. Very well received
Gotta go... thanks for the chat.
A4b. More schools using SM to communicate with parents, would be great to do this with sts too. A whole community approach?
Games based learning, mistakes are accepted and normal part of learning https://t.co/vauyIIrvkK
A4b: we do it's called school. Schools give so much restorative learning for Ss and let them 'mess up' in a safe environment
one of the most interesting lectures we had was from on this topic
A4(b): Quite hard in 2016 because mistakes can haunt forever. Maybe helping them to make 'safe' mistakes in the classroom?
The danger of technology for young people is that anyone can sign up for social media, especially with mobile phones
we have them too, parents also sign the school ICT policy with their SS & BYOD policy
A4b how can we expect Ss to behave when celebs and politicians get good publicity for sexting or abusive SM use?
So do I!! But that ad makes me want to do the opposite of everything its preaching about, just to spite them!!
As we'd include Ss in IEPs etc, they should be consulted in other areas where guidelines are needed.
A4; Let's face it many parents have an SM addiction and may not be demoing or monitoring usage in many cases
. A4b. By letting Ss take risks, explore while Ts are there to monitor, support tch & guide.
And the truth is, when we ban we teach our Ss how to hack the block https://t.co/bh0wCkLv2Z
A4. I think this becomes hard when Ss 'hide' things for fear of being blanket banned from SM /tech. Punishment is not the solution
Parents have a bigger responsibility than what society currently expects. Ts can't carry the burden for social ills
Except the conversation bit I'm sure they do that they do that in the 2nd and 3rd world. Where is the 2nd by the way
Aren't we working in partnership w parents to educate the whole child? Why are we shying away from this? https://t.co/NmpHp53Z8L
A4.Its a P thing but when Ps don't tch it we have to.Like other things. Help the S dev holistically. Not their fault
That ad does my head in 😀
is also a great way for kids to learn safe &!positive soc med habits, while still in 'walled garden'
A5/ You dont need to quit you just need to quit BS. Quitting/banning are reactive/ineffective https://t.co/nE5xXjzJuG
love that you used the word "game" - so important to include that! but I have no way of staying ahead!
A4b- like in all walks of life there is going to be someone who stuffs up. Share these stories and learn. 1/2
A5. Technology is another tool it doesn't need to better an outcome it supports it
Interesting point https://t.co/mgR01OeDRS
how do Ss define a mistake? Or what they see as issues vs what Ts say? Often big difference in Ss concerns vs Ts
Parents are mainly unaware & need help bc they too can't keep up with kids online, we must be pro active https://t.co/FowKoHycoS
Trouble is not all parents r responsible & do not c Ћ issues or r just uninformed
I let the kids lead - they teach me quite happily - great sharers of their knowledge and expertise
But often do school is community and sometimes family https://t.co/qsVBsGbOym
Parents have a bigger responsibility than what society currently expects. Ts can't carry the burden for social ills
Umm Modelling and holding a 24/7 responsibility are different things https://t.co/8f2ZR2DrnZ
Um, since schools said here's your textbook in a laptop, we all need to have one! We presume Ts model well! https://t.co/BM9ABUAK1n
Question- Since when was it the Ts role to promote responsible usage of tech? Is that a Parental thing? https://t.co/znNZCe4qhc
Anyone can talk to the child when they walk down the street too. They learn how to treat appropriately
A5: The old ‘pedagogy before technology’ scenario. But, there needs to be the realisation that tech is here, so work with it too.
Q4 what about starting earlier - letting peers and trusted adults feedback in safe tech env before kids go to open social media
Since we started encouraging it's use in the classroom, use the tool=teach its proper use https://t.co/evsGzDWnvv
Question- Since when was it the Ts role to promote responsible usage of tech? Is that a Parental thing? https://t.co/znNZCe4qhc
It becomes 1 more thing to blame teachers for
Agree. Unfortunately lots of these are blocked in Qld state school atm. Hoping this will change eventually.
True. Primary Ss believe they would never do anything silly until Ћ teenage years hit & all that goes with it
. Yes we are but at a low decile sch many Ps don't have tech or educate S.Many on streets at night no lunch no shoes
agreed. Mistakes in online ecologies are sometimes dealt with disproportionately https://t.co/hqYhZHrfzo
A4b: I think by not coming down super hard when they first screw up. They need to learn too. Being a kid is hard.
A4b 2/2 - I read the SMH article about Toronto High suspending 50 kids to my 11yr old today. Was good avenue to have a discussion
And THIS is how many people describe the chat experience! 💥☺️👌🏻 tweet of the night! https://t.co/6IsKOkXQSB
I feel like I have just eaten too much sugar and am high on red cordial. My fingers are numb!
Latin works for Harry Potter…
A4b: Everyone makes mistakes its what we do with those mistakes after..share with s's your own mistakes https://t.co/TDsPmiSoT0
as the family dynamics change and the use of social media so does the expectations on the students
A5/ A response to the SydGrammar at Brissie Girls Grammar. 'It's about using them with intent': https://t.co/QONXkEMt36
We can ensure safe use at school but we can't be responsible for nights/weekends actions https://t.co/uaXkyj9C9C
A5 - Quotes from many educators at , “Pedagogy first and technology second – where appropriate.
pedagogy and pen and paper works just as well as using tech .
A5/ Maybe a lesson learnt through observations of adults around Ss and their dependency on digital tech.
Agree 100% https://t.co/mVDrqQqxUo
Parents have a bigger responsibility than what society currently expects. Ts can't carry the burden for social ills
Is this a good enough reason? https://t.co/BcaYOqERku
I don’t agree in this day and age. I feel the average age of primary parents is less than teachers.
A5) Keep asking teh question. What is the intended outcome? Can it be done more {insert word here} with a device?
What's your goal
A5/ Confession: Dr Vallance has a point, mostly bc (most) teachers aren't ready to teach effectively w/ .
Partnership is needed, we can guide and set moral expectations but can't hold 24/7 responsibility burden https://t.co/BN35oIjmsh
we must work in partnership w parents - insert global village theory here
Read online and published Twitter... Marketing? Or engaging students in learning?
Kids are all awake here now. Have a great week all! Looking forward to connecting.
Yes of course, we teach students this and about the dangers - but I believe it should be a combined approach
A5 use tech as a T&L tool. We didn't throw out paper when Ss started doodling on it. Focus on What you are doing.
well if it doesn't would you use tech? Sometimes yes, but probably not.
A4b Good to let Ss make mistakes but mistakes on the web can become worldwide. That digital tattoo Idea
true, but being informed early and positivity allows them to make informed choices
A5 This is just like banning sex ed to stop teen pregnancy!! It will happen just with no support systems when everything blows up!
A5/ We can stop the moral panic over the idea the internet is 'addictive' and harness its benefits: https://t.co/roYz2CAD1r
Schools have done sex ed for many years now, not exactly something "in the classroom"! School is for life?
Practice digital citizenship like real citizenship from a young age just like we teach manners. Its a lifestyle.
Back to A3 I am so sick and tired of teachers using computers as babysitters/time wasters! "Pop onto google and search!" is wrong!
Q5 is turning off phones/iPads/laptops and being creamed at Chinese checkers. Or making an epic lasagne 2gthr
I think that it a generalised assumption. Each case is individualised and can’t be assumed.
A5 I've upset ppl already. It's an archaic attitud- t is not the world we live in or are preparing Ss for https://t.co/bLEmjLtKgo
A5 Isn't it all part of the same bundle?
Are initiatives like this working? Why are cyber issues rising? Do we need to do more? https://t.co/c8jvvAuGDz
Our school runs information nights for parents who care to come and learn. Very well received
From a school where basically every kid has everything they'll ever need. Find their logic awful.
Had a speaker talk to Ss about his struggle with online pornography. said he could not act until he accepted it
But then what happens whn w'end issues r brought in2 the schl yard. It becomes a school prob like in Syd
I am starting to learn this- start tomorrow in P-2 tech in Qld state schl. Very diff from no filter in NYC schl!
We don’t have an adult holding our hand through our mistakes for our whole life.
A5: Stay as up to date as you can. Leverage SM for your purposes. What do you want to see in Ss? Start there.
This is why so much cyber bullying is not reported
I think society expects plenty, but we know too many fail as well. School is for all, to help all.
A5 cont.. We respond by showing Ss the impact good/bad of tech. Informed citizens=informed decisions. https://t.co/bLEmjLtKgo
Pls define digital balance? Person can be productive using tech for 10 hours - others can waste time for 1. 🔁
But parents who haven't been taught proper etiquette can't model it successfully either!!
A5: Balance? Digital literacy should be taught to many of our Ts. I wouldn't think our is the best sample to use!
if it spills into school then we must work WITH parents to support Ss, hard job but ours too!
Too much liking, retweeting and replying tonight - missed Q4! Great convos. Good qs
Yes. Use real life rules and expectations for digital
I get the T setting Ss on the right pathway but does that mean responsibility/liability for 24/7 actions? https://t.co/skVCp8227V
Would like to think it is the role of ALL tech users. Teach, model and do daily. https://t.co/R2xyHsBUmp
Question- Since when was it the Ts role to promote responsible usage of tech? Is that a Parental thing? https://t.co/znNZCe4qhc
So true https://t.co/kz7muMNCGZ
Parents have a bigger responsibility than what society currently expects. Ts can't carry the burden for social ills
What does that even mean? Students should have that help, learning how to learn, fail & succeed.
I was addicted to tv and playing games when I was a teen. I think I turned out alright
They have to go past that eventually, but they deserve the help before then.
A6a: Good question. Still working on it.
But again it is the very parents tht need 2 b there tht don't come
A5 How can we focus on balance & expectation when the curric lines are so blurred? We still see dig as stand alone in gov schools
Totally agree on the partnership and 'shared' responsibility concept! https://t.co/v0ZrXz9cAr
Teachers, alongside parents, should work in partnership. Teachers generally more aware of current tech/influences.
A5) Live in digital world, why place them at such disadvantage? Ask what goals can Ss meet through engagement with digital tech?
everything in moderation.Need to allow Ss the opportunity to experience 'real world' the real world uses computers
If we return to paper our students are going 2 have a tough time at uni where virtually learning is online now
The digital age 4 Ts Never really thought of it like that. Yet again in awe of my Secondary colleagues.
A5: by choosing the best way of responding or demonstrating learning and publishing - physical or digital
6a. If it's not in the way it helps. I feel more efficient getting things done at my own choice time.
GO surfing. Can't take the internet into the ocean. (well you can but I don't want to)
But we do for all aspects of learning, why are we stopping here? We up skill them in tech/net use? https://t.co/PaK6SDb2Ik
Partnership is needed, we can guide and set moral expectations but can't hold 24/7 responsibility burden https://t.co/BN35oIjmsh
we must work in partnership w parents - insert global village theory here
A4. Run an experiment where students have an online presence for a month in a controlled environment. Analyse digital footprint.
6a, You realise this may be a bad q at 9.30am Sunday in school holidays? :)
A6 My little one makes me be accountable, so I unplug when he's around mostly. I unplug by watching TV, thats not as bad thesedays
Completely agree about 24/7. But while they are in our care we should be a good role model whether required to or not.
Or you know, in most every job & career path & every walk of life. Only moreso in future too.
the reality of our modern world - parents work, communication is easier than ever before
Did I say they were? A random example. Tech is more pervasive, honestly.
A6. I think Ss knowing you have a 'switch off' time every night / afternoon. And nothing is 'that' urgent
A6a - would like to challenge notion of "work / life". It is all life. Work is part of it, tech, family, leisure, etc. Balance all
A6b: Its tough. At times I need to connect with Ss outside work hours. We expect Ss to respond but we don't? Double standards!
A6/ By encouraging engagement in activities, interests/hobbies that require equal parts digital, tech, discussion and real world
Spot on brother! And we also support what flows into school but we can't be the only player https://t.co/n5mmwdXJ3d
Completely agree about 24/7. But while they are in our care we should be a good role model whether required to or not.
we offer to host, no one turns up.
Be interested 2 know how many schools back home hold Parent Ed sessions on this.
same! Our policies & curriculum supported the process for all involved, Ss know better = do better!
Q6a. This is a big 1 for me as all my parent interactions are by email/ phone. Set your boundaries explicitly & stick to them! (1)
Finding parents need to know that too.
A6b: Having said that, we need to stop too! Well at least I know I need to stop at times. Work. Rest. Refresh. Makes us better!
Not sure diet is the best analogy. Implies necessity. Tech isn't. Tech skills are. Point taken though.
Funny, my kid isn't remotely concerned whether I have a device in my hand - it doesn’t affect her. She still goes out and plays.
sure does and is never received well by the majority... At the beginning!
This is my point1 No one is more 'pro-tech' than me but are Ts too often fighting the good fight alone? https://t.co/Y3HtH57mrg
we offer to host, no one turns up.
'Let's not teach Ss how to drive a car if we don't want to teach them road rules' apply this to tech!
Though I have remembered half of you go back to school tomorrow :) It's holidays in NSW and where else?
A5. By modelling it in the classroom. Create an environment that balances tech/human interaction in a range of environments.
A6: Make learning explicitly unplugged and state why in the learning intentions. Just as a pen is not a book, tech is just a tool
Q6b. That email will still be there tomorrow doesn't need to be answered after 5pm. No we can't be FB besties! (2)
Do all these things, but make sure you post them on your Social Media account or they didn't happen!
When we use as our guide for using tech in CR, we begin to see the real power of tech in learning.
Sorry I was distracted tonight hope to catch a few more chats now the clocks have changed so I'm not out in QLD!
A6a That's a tricky one. I'd be hypocritical if I said that I unplug easily. Carefully stepping over boundaries teaches me so much
nothing ever happens unless it's posted on social media!
6b. Using a mobile device. Many teachers still wedded to work = computer , don't get what I can do on my phone & quickly.
A6 I should be at the beach now .. but am not ..I cannot teach this without being a hypocrite :)
Q5 Wellbeing & literacies not just "digital," also social, cultural. Health curric proposit'ns are useful https://t.co/RLEl338hv9
Best thing I've read all night! https://t.co/7k2NM1YMFq
'Let's not teach Ss how to drive a car if we don't want to teach them road rules' apply this to tech!
A6) Requires a critical awareness of how digital technologies act on us and sometimes against us, be aware find balance
Q6. My unplugging practices are very shabby... I know I need to do, but struggle! Used to goto Braidwood, but now they have wifi!
A6/b Automated replies after 5:30pm, 'I’m out of the school… If it’s urgent, here is my number. etc.’
Are they rising? Usage is rising, device ownership is rising, isn't that unavoidable?
another great example of using technology positively
A5 Sts need 2 B part of developing content 4 digital lrg - & dialogue abt cyber safety part of all digital lrg @ all levels
Q6b I support my digital nutrition by turning off notifications and not putting SM apps on my phone.
A6:Unplug from school email in the holidays - about to switch back on; limit iPad use til after chn in bed
too true! Two units left on my masters in Ed L'ship. Not a pen has been seen let alone used!
Q6 have other interests and model them. My kids cook, sew and create as well as fully in digital world
A6 I unplug when I go away. Just so that I can live in the moment. And I never watch my kids through my screen
I use my device to read books - is that defeating the purpose of unplugging? I have turned off notifications though.
Q6b. And I edit everything I say on my SM platforms. You are always a teacher when you are in the public eye!! (3)
Agree this can b a problem. Ps 2 want instant answers. Ts who can’t help but respond set your email 2 send on auto
I’ve found it to help immensely!
Q6b also, I am old and not digital native - I think that's an advantage
A6b - I'm like a poker machine - responses are random. Sometimes highly connected & engaged, other times less so. No expectations
A6 - Great question, and one that I should take heed of, I need to take a tech break more often
A6 I let my tweeps know- on a Digital Detox & turn on 'out of office' reply. If desperate - airplane mode https://t.co/9ktkzaHCya
Biggest thing to teach is tech world is ever-changing, without constant learning they won't cope regardless of what schls do now.
A6. By having discussions. Students discuss, explore, listen & take ideas onboard. Plant the seed for further thought/action.
the Victorian Curriculum making huge strides in this area
I just ordered a few books to read - real ones! I like reading on my device, but get distracted!
Yes! Agree. https://t.co/hJ7z1GhlMB
'Let's not teach Ss how to drive a car if we don't want to teach them road rules' apply this to tech!
Ok, the challenge is on - I will go cold tech turkey for the 2nd week of the holidays!
I email to make time to take f2f, words/tone in email easily misunderstood
I have a Kindle cause reading is all I do with it :) Everything else causes too much multitasking :)
I was addicted to playing sport...I find watching it/Xbox fifa much easier now!
A6. I'm not consistent, but try to limit checking emails/SM to certain times of the day.
A 24 hour flight to Paris would be a good chance for - but choosing an airline with onboard wifi! LOL
A6. Aeroplane mode so I know I can't be disturbed and a good book in hand!
& widely used by most Ts as an educational tool When it is,respectful use must be intentionally taught
