Elementary math chat is a weekly math chat where participants come to discuss best practices, examine student work, explore routines for reasoning and research that guides and supports pedagogy centered on problem and student based learning.
Helloooooooo #Elemmathchat friends! Please help me welcome @steve_leinwand as our leader tonight! He is leading us in a chat about cumulative review! Hey #MTBoS we would love to have you join us!
#ElemMathChat Q1. Stop and think. So
do you honestly do daily CUMULATIVE review as part of warm-up or bell work or
math message or you just do a lesson launch that focuses only on today’s
lesson?
A1 As a matter of practice I don’t do daily cumulative review. I’m interested in hearing how others do it so it doesn’t take up the entire math period and addresses all Ss’ needs. #elemmathchat
A1. We've been focusing on #numbersenseroutines as part of our warm ups. We are intentional in our choice or routine and numbers included based on the lesson focus and the identified needs of the group
#elemmathchat
A1. not enough cumulative review in my own college classrm...I do encourage student and working t's to incorporate cumu review esp at the HS level for regents #elemmathchat
A1: This is interesting and makes me think about the warm up activities. Number talks are used most frequently as ongoing review of mental computation. #elemmathchat

#elemmathchat
A1 We start off the year heavy in fractions/decimals, so it's easy to plug those into any activity as a review. Some skills are trickier to do. #elemmathchat
@ElemMathChat#elemmathchat I see far too little commulative review across the grades. When I model the process with items that teachers have suggested I use because they are confident that their students will be successful, we are all amazed by how much hasn't been learned
My students with disabilities are so far behind their peers that I use my warm ups to fill gaps, build number sense and to invite them into mathematics. It is also how I teach and model the problem solving process #ElemMathChat
A1: I use a variety of routines to launch math class that focus on standards outside of our current unit. The routines also focus on addressing the practice standards. I'd love to incorporate an effective/efficient routine for spiral review. #ElemMathChat
I like this! This is where I am starting this year. I have several similar routines that I want to implement in my grade 5 class this year. Last year I did some, but haphazardly. I want to be more consistent this year. #elemmathchat
I also feel we are far to quick to blame and complain about the "before now" I do it too, but here we are and this is who we have, so what am I going to do to fill up the void? #ElemMathChat

@ElemMathChat#elemmathchat Great. Q2. So if you already do
cumulative review you can share ideas with others in a few minutes, but if you
don’t, let’s start with WHY NOT?
Absolutely! I try to work with teachers to select routines that will increase student access to the subsequent instruction. A lot of the spiral review can be worked into guided math groups with greater ability to differentiate material. #elemmathchat
A1: Interesting question as I just posted to the #numbersenseroutines chat about this...I plan to do "Morning NS Routines" that would be cumulative NS review & then during the Minds On part of a lesson are Number Talks that relate to the TP (e.g., WODB, Splat). #elemMathChat
My Ss love ALL of our routines & will hold me to task if I skip 1! Today we had no technology so our @Estimation180 was me holding a python next to me and asking Ss to estimate the length of the snake that once inhabited the skin! Wow the #noticewonders were great! #ElemMathChat
A2: We use a math workshop model. Since independent/partner student work time is part of the structure Ss need to be able to work without teacher guidance. It's a great time to review/practice. #elemmathchat
A2: I think many of us feel bogged down meeting ALL those standards in 180 days w/ one hour of math instruction daily. It is easy to lose sight of the importance of culmulative review so that our Ss hold onto what they've learned and continue to make connections. #elemmathchat
Pt 1 Well my Ss are 3-5 years behind. How much grade level material can they learn if they can not add, subtract, multiply or divide. I do not exagerate when I tell you a S used a calculator to find 8-7 today. #ElemMathChat
Pt 2 I do use All grade 6 @openupresources curriculum with all of my Ss though because it has great low floor high ceiling tasks that all enter but all are challenged. #ElemMathChat
@ElemMathChap#elemmathchat OK How about getting more
specific? Here is what I animated on a slide to launch a lesson last
spring. What do you notice?
What is 6 x 7?
About how much is $32 and $29?
Estiamte the area of this square.
Draw a picture that represents 1 2/3.
A1: Cumulative review is a consistent challenge for me! So much time has to go into it; preparing materials based on student success/ challenges, and finding time/choosing when to cycle back to check for progress/mastery. #elemmathchat
I notice that your questioning addresses a variety of standards and the work should be fairly quick for students. Questions also address math practice standards. #elemmathchat

I was wondering about that too. If Ss are involved in solving rich problems, isn't cumulative review going to be naturally a part of that process? #elemmathchat
@ElemMathChat#elemmathchat So all I'm saying is that I think we need to be far more thoughtful about our exit tickets than our cumulative review. Yes, review, but also get the blood flowing early in a lesson.
I bounce around with problems from there, youcubed, @robertkaplinsky website, and others. Love when organic problems come directly from the students. #elemmathchat

A3: Cumulative review ensures that Ss hold onto what has been learned and provides them with opportunities to make connections to new learning. #elemmathchat
A3 My Ss need to keep math from before part of their daily routine. They have short term memory issues. If you don't use it, you lose it AND have nothing to connect the new to. #ElemMathChat
A2. Answering with a question. So it is better to do cumulative review as a warm-up or is it okay to do it during math workshop? Does the timing have an impact?
A3 Use it or lose it! When students disengage with skills and materials, they begin to forget. I see this the most with data, measurment and geometry #elemmathchat
A3: Use it or lose it. I hope Ss have opportunities to use what they know to solve problems but allows you to make sure specific skills are used and remembered. #elemmathchat
#elemmathchat And finally, Q4. There are lots of great ways
to build in cumulative review. Now is the time to share some of the ways that
YOU do this for others to learn from.
I think it would have to depend on the intended depth of the review. Is it questioning students turn & talk about quickly or is it a hands on activity for workshop? That’s how I choose. I try to value the space for both! #elemmathchat
A4: I would actually like some reviews...if anyone has some, on this resource for cumulative review (Canadian resource) https://t.co/Avomoo4D1h#elemmathchat
I agree. We hear from secondary that elementary teachers need to do a better job teaching computation. If students don't have opportunities to use what they learned, they are going to forget it. #elemmathchat
I have to plug https://t.co/1FJcWu5P6G There are so many review opportunites here! Fractions, geometry, etc. Very rich and FUN. I'm a proponent of sense-making routines that review while engaging kids in deep thinking. Love WODB, number talks & open middle too. #elemmathchat
A4: I do “test the teacher” as a centers task where THEY write questions & answer key, & I specify which areas/standards their questions have to cover, usually a range #ElemMathChat
The importance for DOK 1 for review is more for students requiring more exposure to get to mastery. Those that have mastered, I would rather stretch into something deeper. #elemmathchat
#elemmathchat
A4. We did centers in 4th grade. We would have a technology center and a writing center where the content was previously taught skills. Writing was my favorite because it pushed students to explain their strategies and solutions.
I'm not big on students memorizing their facts but understanding how to figure out what they don't know. I think that requires continued opportunities to use and refine strategies. #elemmathchat
One last point is that I've seen very effective mini number talks emerge from reviewing the cumulative review questions. Sets tone for how we orchestrate the rest of the lesson. #elemmathchat
Next week #elemmathchat is thrilled that Natalie Moon @themathgirl will lead us in Many Ways to Skin A Number Talk Please mark 8/30 8 pm cst on your calendar and join us #MTBoS#ITeachMath
