A weekly chat covering topics related to teaching with a global perspective. A rotating cast of guest hosts include education experts and influencers. A must-follow for all educators who would like to open their classroom to global opportunities! Hosted by @HSingmaster and sponsored by @AsiaSocietyEDU
It's Heather, tag-teaming for @AsiaSoceityEDU colleague @hsingmaster tonight, from NYC! New years is a reflective time for me, so I will probably start off by setting new goals. On New Years Eve, I'll watch the Time Square ball drop on TV to avoid the crowds! #globaledchat
#globaledchat
Hello, all! I'm Andi Webb from NC and currently living in Arlington, VA as an #EinsteinFellows18 this year.
I will probably ring in the new year not doing a whole lot! :) I'm going home for the holidays.
Hello #globaledchat!I am a special educator originally from California, but currently teaching in Mexico. I plan to ring in the new year with my brother and some old school friends....chilling.
Hello #globaledchat! Delighted to be part of tonight's discussion. Living in Villanova (outside Philly), PA. Hoping my adult daughters invite us to ring in NYE in NYC with them!

#globaledchat Hi all, I'm Christopher Yarsawich from Atlanta, GA. where I'm an asst dir of global studies at @HiesPgc. House bound with toddlers, so hoping they fall asleep so my wife and I can watch the peach drop in peace!
Hello #globaledchat! Delighted to be part of tonight's discussion. Living in Villanova (outside Philly), PA. Hoping my adult daughters invite us to ring in NYE in NYC with them!
First #globaledchat question coming up in 1 minute! Don't forget to use the Q1/A1 format and #globaledchat so everyone can follow the conversation about diversity, equity, and inclusion (#DEI).
A1: Honoring the diversity around us can lead to global learning (and equity! and inclusion!) when we notice, care, respect, serve, include those around us. This demonstrates how global citizenship begins with hyper-local acts. #globaledchat
A1: Topics like the Digital Divide can help Ss understand that not everyone has a smartphone, constant access to the internet....uncensored internet.
#globaledchat
I am so glad you could join #globaledchat, my friend! So glad to have you here representing the @YMCA and the awesome #DEI work going on there. I gotta visit you in Chicago again, sometime soon (when it's not so cold!).
A1: A deliberate focus on #DEI teaches youth how to understand and recognize others' perspectives and circumstances, that we aren't all the same in circumstances or have the same resources, but we have many of the same values, wants, and needs. #globaledchat
So happy you're joining from Japan! How's the weather where you are? And more importantly, I'd love to hear what are some diversity, equity, inclusion challenges you see in Japan. #globaledchat
Here's the first #globaledchat question, in case you missed it!
Q1: In what unique ways does teaching about diversity, equity, inclusion (#DEI) offer global learning opportunities?
Teaching about #DEI in a context of #globaled seems like a no-brainer, but these ideas often get siloed, even to the point where they might compete. Educators that care about each need to find ways to collaborate and build on interests, needs. #globaledchat
The article you share has an important point: we ALL HAVE BIAS. Our brains evolved that way. But our brains are also ELASTIC and can learn cooperation, respect, justice. And our hearts want love and belonging. #globaledchat
Not too bad - around 50 degrees right now. Your question is simple in a way - we don't have a ton of diversity where I'm at, or inclusion. I'm working in my room to do what I can to expose Ss to diverse literature + lots of conferencing to do what I can! #globaledchat
The world is diverse, so there's that. It's inequitable and non-inclusive in various ways across the globe, and that's important to understand, too. #GlobalEdChat
Here's the first #globaledchat question, in case you missed it!
Q1: In what unique ways does teaching about diversity, equity, inclusion (#DEI) offer global learning opportunities?
A2: Linking #DEI & #globaled builds #empathy by humanizing experiences, perspectives that might be hard for a student to relate to; calls for creativity, collaboration, communication, compassion, cognitive complexity. #globaledchat
#globaledchat#AsiaSociety Graduation Performance System standards do a gr8 job of this! Wrote about them in Defying Standardization. Wish all kids had access to those kinds of standards where Taking Action on global problems and understanding others is "standard"
Case in point, our school has separate roles, one for #globaled and one for #DEI. Arguably the work justifies that, but org. structure suggests either default silo or default collaboration. #GlobalEdChat
A1 - Teaching literature from diverse groups inherently lends itself to being globally connected choosing books from all over the world allows student so to see those diverse perspective, interact with them and hopefully understand them. #globaledchat
A2: Another way of looking at it: WITHOUT #DEI the ability to empathize, recognize perspectives, investigate the world, take action is severely limited. Diversity is the natural state of things. If you don't think you have it, you aren't looking hard enough. #globaledchat
#globaledchat A1 With In our school, creating a soccer program helped to bring our school together and help students learn about diversity. It helped to unite our school as one.
https://t.co/lYDAm8gRpl
Exactly. Our Ss and our children need awareness of inequity and exclusion in order to use their talents to fight against the willful ignorance of those that allow or encourage that inequity and exclusion. #GlobalEdChat
#globaledchat A1. The whole idea of acceptance comes in from the teaching of diversity and it goes beyond ones sphere of influence and geographic or cultural boundaries #deihttps://t.co/HfulpM8BYz
Don't forget about all the ways we are diverse - it's not just about race, although that is usually the first area of focus. What are other aspects of diversity you can focus on? #globaledchat
Not too bad - around 50 degrees right now. Your question is simple in a way - we don't have a ton of diversity where I'm at, or inclusion. I'm working in my room to do what I can to expose Ss to diverse literature + lots of conferencing to do what I can! #globaledchat
Random question....are there enough universal themes out there that cats can get away w/ just learning old British or American literature?
#globaledchat
That's a perfect example of silos. Both roles are vital but now we need to integrate and learn how to collaborate and cross-fertilize interests, audiences, initiatives. I'm looking at this w a few schools and it's a culture shift, calling for real leadership #globaledchat
Case in point, our school has separate roles, one for #globaled and one for #DEI. Arguably the work justifies that, but org. structure suggests either default silo or default collaboration. #GlobalEdChat
Hey #GlobalEdChat! Hopping in a bit late. Bed time duty. A1. Teaching #DEI makes global learning a natural progression and extension of the learning while encouraging collaboration, global thinking, and more! So many sites/apps out there to find connections right now!
#globaledchat To teach #DEI well u need2 engage students in some #PBL & that is enhanced when #PBL derives from socially conscious problems that extend beyond classroom 2 larger society, including global connection! Some gr8 #PBL here 4 globally minded https://t.co/w3uaUpoyrx
A2: It’s not enough to just recognize different lived realities, #DEI and #GlobalEd both charge us to take an active role and add action to empathy. #GlobalEdChat
A2: I think that focusing on Equity (not equality) can help guide Ss when working on #ServiceLearning projects. Not everyone may have the same situations, but we can help make things as equitable as possible
#globaledchat
A2: Working with folks different from yourself, reading and synthesizing new information and perspectives, and adding your own voice to the conversation, all develop empathy and are important in the 21st century. #globaledchat
#globaledchat A1. The whole idea of acceptance comes in from the teaching of diversity and it goes beyond ones sphere of influence and geographic or cultural boundaries #dei
A3: I love the Choices units from Brown U. https://t.co/Q2WvVMqbyI Most end with policy sims, but some are "perspectives" based, where students adopt pers. of dif groups. Teaches nuance in historical context. Westward Expansion offers #DEI esp. for juniors in APUSH #GlobalEdChat
There are a lot of themes that can be found in those two literature cultures but there are enough that are not covered or covered by an outsider perspective that we need to be looking at all cultures literatures as sources of discussion. #GlobalEdChat
#globaledchat A2 We had the opportunity a few years ago for our students to interact with Congressman John Lewis and talk about his role in the civil rights movement. Truly gave our students a look at that time and how it has brought about change.
A3 https://t.co/4AuKLZEfmx
- the need for diverse, inclusive books helps everyone. Don’t see this as a PC effort and begrudgingly accept them but embrace diverse books as good for all kids. #globaledchat
#globaledchat A2. It creates awareness of what the world is , helps develop empathy and sometimes Ss and teachers might be aware but not conscious.once you talk frequently , it is not in the recesses of the mind but you are mindful of the wrong from the right & that is important
A2 You need kids to recognize differences but embrace them. You need them to recognize stereotypes and systems but question them. You need them to recognize inequities but fight to change them. That will foster 21st century skills and develop empathy. #GlobalEdChat
Boom! We need to move from thought and understanding to action! Our Ss need to know that with the privileges they enjoy comes a responsibility to shine a light on injustice! #GlobalEdChat
A2: It’s not enough to just recognize different lived realities, #DEI and #GlobalEd both charge us to take an active role and add action to empathy. #GlobalEdChat
A3. #globaledchat Anything with socially conscious PBL. Facing the https://t.co/Tin8UKGZyS has a lot of global sustainability resources. I curate a scoopit page with some socially conscious #pbl as well: https://t.co/nAXuQFgv5k (Free) Student interest - best place2 start.
A3: Invite your students to help you curate books, films, music they love, and their grandparents or other family members enjoy. This tells diverse students: I see you. I honor you and your heritage. #globaledchat
A3: NewsELA is great for this, but longer texts in general are amazing too. I think it's important for Ss to see folks very different from themselves in text - so they can have what @KellyGToGo calls "imaginative rehearsals" from a different perspective. #globaledchat
#globaledchat A2 We had the opportunity a few years ago for our students to interact with Congressman John Lewis and talk about his role in the civil rights movement. Truly gave our students a look at that time and how it has brought about change.
A3: I wish I had more space! @FirstBook has wonderful low-cost diverse & globally-focused books that are categorized by age & genre.
Definitely worth checking out to expand classroom library options!

A3- I constantly look to my students for examples of diverse literature. I love hearing about all their great choices from around the world. Then I can push them through to our library and to other students. I also think @TEDTalks is a great resource for diversity #globaledchat
#globaledchat A3. @TeachSDGs#GSLgoals.
To my mind are best platforms to encourage and teach students' international mindedness, social responsibility and @PenpalSchools is also good platform for information exchange and diverse thinking
I love this. Student curation is so important both formally for research and projects but also informally through conversations and discussions with students. #globaledchat
Love podcast resources! A couple to check out: Teaching While White and my all-time favorite: Seeing White from Scene On Radio: https://t.co/GqpOXWvTxC. Seriously, drop whatever you're listening to and download this! #globaledchat

A3. Part 1. We have done @globalreadaloud last year with A Long Walk to Water & this year with Refugee. Both were amazing. I also love The Hate U Give, All American Boys, Amal Unbound, & many more. #weneeddiversebooks#GlobalEdChat
How do they find the books @TeacherWinters? Are they going to the library or hearing about new diverse books from teachers? It would be great to have youth-reviewed books to share with other youth! #globaledchat

Read a recent book La Frontera that is a beautiful book about immigration. Moved a student and me to tears. Ss kept saying it's so sad. And then the ending is beautiful. #mustread#globaledchat
A4 #globaledchat The old Johari window is good place2 start in terms of reflecting on self. Knowing yourself & blind spots helps with being mindful about biases & #tokenism
#globaledchat Checking in ate as I had to support students working on the #OGCadventCalendar

A4: Ask youth to speak only for themselves and to qualify ideas/opinions with evidence or experience. This can help Ss understand a variety of points-of-view and what shapes individual perspective. #globaledchat
A4: To avoid #tokenism, don't just watch TED Talk on Danger of a Single Story but reflect on times you might present a single story: Thanksgiving? Diwali? Lunar New Year? refugees? Central America? Detroit? Anything you can imagine has nuance! #globaledchat
A4: This is SO important! I include multiple sources and multiple voices (i.e., not my own) to tell stories. I teach #DEI as an exercise in anthropology, Ss distinguish emic vs etic viewpoints. Challenge Ss to understand those stories on their own terms. #GlobalEdChat
A4 - I try to look for voices that are from the culture being discussed. It helps to have that keyed in voice within our classroom so that students see the truth within those culture’s participants. #globaledchat
Seriously. There are SO MANY amazing, beautiful, rich, enlightening, authentic resources out there. If anyone says they can't find/obtain any, they aren't looking hard enough, or maybe your community needs to get some (and find grants!) #globaledchat#weneeddiversebooks

#globaledchat I am trying to catch up in the questions but a little lost. Everything I do in my classroom is diverse and promotes critical and creative thinking. WE need to be challenging our students to be empathetic for things/people other than themselves
A3: It's important to foster a diversity of thought here as well. That helps avoids stereotyping/tokenism because it helps us view folks as individuals rather than monolithic groups based on some trait (that they themselves don't always identify with.) #globaledchat
Literature has and always will be a great source of empathy. It's an opportunity to understand someone who isn't like me... but only if we're actually reading about those who aren't. And once you empathize you notice more and more similarities, not differences. #GlobalEdChat
A1 - Teaching literature from diverse groups inherently lends itself to being globally connected choosing books from all over the world allows student so to see those diverse perspective, interact with them and hopefully understand them. #globaledchat

Yes! My rubrics include a "Personality" measure of using "I/me" language and framing opinions from a distinct POV that has inherent limitations. #GlobalEdChat
A4. It needs to be a regular part of their learning. They need to hear those terms routinely and see diverse texts/people/etc. interwoven into the curriculum. It can’t be a one and done. #globaledchat
#globaledchat A3. By giving them experiencial learning opportunities...by letting them drive projects through school and home community...by enabling their learning through #SDGs ...when they ask questions and look for creative ways of undoing the wrong if human impact .
I ask my students to follow this TED Talk with an example from their lives of when a single story was applied to them, and when they applied it to someone else. Share personal moments invites empathy. This becomes a touchstone for the entire year. #GlobalEdChat
Q5: What examples of #DEI have you taught or been inspired by? This can include exposure you’ve had through books, films, other media, and examples outside of education. #globaledchat
A4: We can combat tokenism and essentialism by presenting multiple narratives. For every article about a war-torn nation, provide a memoir written by a refugee. For every project about slavery, build in opportunities students to research rebellions. #GlobalEdChat
#GlobalEdChat My students have just complete Pecha Kucha's to present their inquiry topic of Eco-Tourism all linked to the SDGs. Mixing it up and promoting global citizenship allows our students to think outside the box.
#globaledchat A3. By giving them experiencial learning opportunities...by letting them drive projects through school and home community...by enabling their learning through #SDGs ...when they ask questions and look for creative ways of undoing the wrong if human impact .
A5: I find #NobelPeacePrize winners a great example of diverse, empowered, global leaders building a world of equity and justice. Even learning their varied names can serve as an exercise in #inclusion. #globaledchat
Great Q. It’s easy to say that there are intentional celebrations of diversity and inclusion lessons - days for those, but for me it’s important to address our school culture and mindset. Have courage to stand up for equity and equality. #globaledchat
Love this—open the discussion around false equivalencies and allow Ss to challenge the basis of which narratives and voices are included and why. #globaledchat
A4: We can combat tokenism and essentialism by presenting multiple narratives. For every article about a war-torn nation, provide a memoir written by a refugee. For every project about slavery, build in opportunities students to research rebellions. #GlobalEdChat
#globaledchat A4. We talk a lot about culture and acceptance...I encourage students' to ask questions, not only in the class but from other adults ....we discuss what the " others " might be...what is othering?
Q6: Cultural competence is the ability to understand, communicate to, and effectively interact with people across cultures. How do you develop your own cultural competence? How does this enhance your effectiveness as a global educator? #globaledchat
A6 #globaledchat It sounds cliche, but #TRAVEL, a lot, with open mind & willingness to experience the culture. Means travel like a local, living like a local, interacting, being willing to challenge ur assumptions & way of thinking. Not spending time at Hotel beach club.
Yes, thanks for making that point. For example, I was born in Iran, a 98% (?) Shiite Muslim country. My family heritage is #Bahai, #Jewish, #Christian and #Muslim. Diversity of thought is our m.o., and we likely defy all the "single stories" of Iranians! #globaledchat
A3: It's important to foster a diversity of thought here as well. That helps avoids stereotyping/tokenism because it helps us view folks as individuals rather than monolithic groups based on some trait (that they themselves don't always identify with.) #globaledchat
Presume incompetence. Ask questions. Be curious/humble. Being full inclusion Soed/Gen Ed I have to model for my Ss who might be disadvantaged to social nuances. #globaledchat
A6: I read about different cultures and world events. I also try to avoid words like "weird" or "exotic" when describing people, experiences, or events. This takes practice but can subtly prevent my/others' judgment about people and their values or experiences. #globaledchat
A6: I came across Mixxer (don't be scared by the double xx's) it's an academic's project on matching up language exchange partnerships! https://t.co/uVktgOprRB Following my own bilingual journey, I keep a regular conversation with a Skype pal in Ukraine. #globaledchat
#globaledchat A5.a. The whole idea of ownership and leadership and sharing the planet comes through our social science class ....I don't own the content my kids run it through the theme and assess themselves by the standards...they develop skills and they look at various aspects
I agree. Traveling is good to learn about others. My husband and I like to rent a taxi from a local for a day when visiting somewhere, and ask him/her to show us what we should see. We learned so much more! #globaledchat
A5: I find #NobelPeacePrize winners a great example of diverse, empowered, global leaders building a world of equity and justice. Even learning their varied names can serve as an exercise in #inclusion. #globaledchat
I agree and also make a practice of 'traveling' in my own community - intentionally interacting with different cultures in a respectful way. #GlobalEdChat
#globaledchat You all have to share the Refugee Suitcase Topic with your Ss, placing your Ss in the shoes of a displaced person so Powerful.

Presume incompetence. Ask questions. Be curious/humble. Being full inclusion Soed/Gen Ed I have to model for my Ss who might be disadvantaged to social nuances. #globaledchat
#globaledchat 5b.While the topic covered will be of history.we bring in the #myp aspects of globalization & sustainability,of fairness & development. so the students develop different real life perspectives...this year they have entered #GSLgoals which will give further impetus
Q7: As a global educator, how do you support your school’s, district’s, or program’s #DEI goals and/or how do you help advocate and advance a wider culture that values diversity, equity, and inclusion? #globaledchat
YES. It makes me so happy to meet teachers who realize how important it is to learn to pronounce names properly on the first day of school. Growing up I liked school but ALWAYS HATED DAY ONE bc noone could #SayMyName. #globaledchat
A7: I work hard to share my materials with my colleagues; books, videos, manipulatives, etc. I use social media to share what I do with my Ss. #globaledchat
Exactly! A small thing, it would seem, but it has big impact. People mispronounce my last name all the time, and it drives me crazy! Check out this blog about My Name, My Identity: https://t.co/KpA55bYPhI#globaledchat
A5: I find #NobelPeacePrize winners a great example of diverse, empowered, global leaders building a world of equity and justice. Even learning their varied names can serve as an exercise in #inclusion. #globaledchat
A6 #globaledchat It sounds cliche, but #TRAVEL, a lot, with open mind & willingness to experience the culture. Means travel like a local, living like a local, interacting, being willing to challenge ur assumptions & way of thinking. Not spending time at Hotel beach club.
A7: #globaledchat we offer professional development at #Learning2 that works hard to address these issues. Join us at our January event to see @TaraLinney address gender equalityhttps://www.learning2europe.org/tara-linney-computational-thinking-in-a-gender-equitable-environment/
Love the #GlobalGoals as a framework. I often #TeachSDGs and let students choose what they want to learn more about and what actions they will take. #GlobalEdChat
A6. My school’s equity team gives me opportunities to have powerful conversations. I attended a Dismantling Racism workshop two years ago that has forever altered the lens through which I see the world. I read diverse books. I seek out PD that will help me grow. #globaledchat
#globaledchat
Q7 I do all I can to share and collaborate with educators around the world. It is important we learn from each other and share the diversity of our PLN's with our classrooms.
Our time on #globaledchat is up! Please help me thank @growingupglobal for moderating a terrific discussion this week.
This is the last #globaledchat for 2018. We're taking a short break and will resume in January. Have a happy new year!
Programmatically speaking, I always keep these 2 questions in my mind when we plan a workshop, webinar, new process, etc. for teachers in the @NEAFoundation Fellowship:
Who is missing?
Who isn’t feeling like they belong in this space?
#GlobalEdChat
