Q1) What types of support do online students need (or want) beyond the course site/LMS?

Feb 24 @ 12:13 PM EST
Hi
#iolchat
! Was caught up in grading. I'm Becca from Michigan, living in Boston.
IOLblog

Phrased another way ... Which resources, tools, assistance and offices are most important for

success?

@Ms_Imthurn
Nice to see you, Becca! Grading can be all-consuming. ;)

Online Ss need same access to same support services as on-campus Ss - advising, counselling - but also need tech support

A lot of my students want to meetup in-person or virtually to talk course matters

Well said! Advsing? Yes! Libraries? Yes! Health and Wellness? Yes! and on and on ...

I experience this in my online classes, too. Students who reside in same area often meet F2F to work on projects

access to online library, support from faculty - email/videoconference, etc.
IOLblog
Feb 24 @ 12:17 PM EST
@ridvanaliu
Having a virtual space for them to communicate/collaborate is also important!
#IOLchat
Any recommended platforms?
Ms_Imthurn
Feb 24 @ 12:17 PM EST
A1) I like including resources in announcements with more info. For support, I hold open office hours outside of the LMS
#iolchat
IOLblog
Feb 24 @ 12:18 PM EST
@jshamsy
Faculty support a great addition to our growing list. And it can happen in many ways.

Although my virtual office hours still not very popular ;)

Excellent! Any favorite way to hold open office hours? Are these online and/or in person?

The tech support piece is critical - one of my online students shared frustrations with this just yesterday!

Online, as my students are in MI and I'm in MA :) I hold them in Adobe Connect all day long on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

It's good if your webinar office hours can be recorded, that way students who missed it can view it later.

Virtual workshops worked for me. Weekly virtual sessions with tools like
@Skype
,
@EDUonGo
,
@google
hangouts

Our help desk is pretty busy helping our online Ss, and we extend hours into evenings and weekends to accomodate all
#iolchat
IOLblog
Feb 24 @ 12:24 PM EST
@Ms_Imthurn
Of course. ;) All day?! Sounds like plenty of opportunity for drop-in discussions, q&a, etc.
#IOLchat
Ms_Imthurn
Feb 24 @ 12:26 PM EST
@IOLblog
Yep, 8:30 to 3:30. The idea is that when my high schoolers are online, so am I. I can screenshare, chat, use video, etc.
#iolchat
jshamsy
Feb 24 @ 12:26 PM EST
@IOLblog
I never had any success either - but I guess just knowing the opportunity is there is helpful
#iolchat
IOLblog
Feb 24 @ 12:28 PM EST
@jshamsy
Agreed.
#IOLchat
Some of my colleagues plan mini-lectures during that time and record. But drop-in access helpful, too.

That's great! It must comfort them to know you're available when needed. Bridging the distance!

Q2) How can we best refer or connect students to all of these sources of support?
#iolchat
LoriLDuke
Feb 24 @ 12:31 PM EST
@IOLblog
A2) We include a list of support links in all our online courses, and plan a virtual orientation in Sept for new Ss
#iolchat
Ms_Imthurn
Feb 24 @ 12:32 PM EST
A2) I try to make everything as transparent as possible. For ex, I include this picture of my office space
#iolchat
https://t.co/AQ8tdydjTO
IOLblog
Feb 24 @ 12:33 PM EST
@LoriLDuke
Two great ideas! Orientations can cover a lot of ground and provide a central reference point.
#iolchat
IOLblog
Feb 24 @ 12:33 PM EST
@LoriLDuke
And I think having links to everything within the course somewhere is more prevalent than it used to be (and helpful).
#iolchat
stevencyee
Feb 24 @ 12:34 PM EST
@IOLblog
A2) I feel these types of supports should be build-in features to the LMS that students can find easily.
#iolchat
IOLblog
Feb 24 @ 12:35 PM EST
@Ms_Imthurn
That's perfect! Helps set the tone, what they should expect, encourage use of this great service. :)

Agreed! I'm seeing this more, but still room to improve in some schools, systems. Access from one entry point ideal!

A) Video tutorials is one way we help our students. Demonstrating step by step so they see the process in it's entirety.
#iolchat
LoriLDuke
Feb 24 @ 12:37 PM EST
@IOLblog
We also use widgets on the LMS home page to make support links more visible and easily accessible
#iolchat
IOLblog
Feb 24 @ 12:39 PM EST
@LoriLDuke
Visibility is definitely an issue - what* is available and how* do we get there?
#IOLchat
Widgets make it easy. :)
IOLblog
Feb 24 @ 12:40 PM EST
Q3) How do faculty members/instructors find out about these student support resources?
#iolchat
stevencyee
Feb 24 @ 12:41 PM EST
@IOLblog
@LoriLDuke
Also, we see making the support features available on mobile devices is getting more important.
#iolchat
Ms_Imthurn
Feb 24 @ 12:41 PM EST
A3) Full circle to last week--through PD :)
#iolchat
jshamsy
Feb 24 @ 12:43 PM EST
@stevencyee
@IOLblog
LMSs seem to be dedicated to making things as difficult as possible =(
#iolchat
IOLblog
Feb 24 @ 12:43 PM EST
@stevencyee
@LoriLDuke
Absolutely ... and we seem to discuss that fairly frequently in
#IOLchat
- mobile access is in demand!
LoriLDuke
Feb 24 @ 12:43 PM EST
@IOLblog
A4) Sometimes, the same way as the students do, through links in the LMS. Especially new instructors
#iolchat
jshamsy
Feb 24 @ 12:44 PM EST
A3) I think there is also an underlying issue of motivation here - if Ss are properly motivated they will seek out what they need
#iolchat
LoriLDuke
Feb 24 @ 12:44 PM EST
@stevencyee
@IOLblog
Mobile access is important for sure
#iolchat
IOLblog
Feb 24 @ 12:45 PM EST
@jshamsy
@stevencyee
I know some of them do, at least for me. Not all systems are created equal
#IOLchat
jshamsy
Feb 24 @ 12:46 PM EST
@LoriLDuke
@stevencyee
@IOLblog
Agreed! I think LMSs have been very slow to catch on with that - some are difficult to use
#iolchat
IOLblog
Feb 24 @ 12:48 PM EST
@jshamsy
@LoriLDuke
@stevencyee
This leads nicely into Q4 .... ;)
#IOLchat
IOLblog
Feb 24 @ 12:49 PM EST
What kinds of support do online students need, but still don't have readily available?
#iolchat

Q4) What kinds of support do online students need, but still don't have readily available?
#iolchat
jshamsy
Feb 24 @ 12:50 PM EST
A4) Standardization - each online course still seems to be its own entity - can be stressful & cognitively taxing for students
#iolchat
Ms_Imthurn
Feb 24 @ 12:51 PM EST
A4) I agree with the mobile ideas and I would add that students often need an introduction to the LMS that they may not get
#iolchat
LoriLDuke
Feb 24 @ 12:51 PM EST
@IOLblog
A4) I think tutoring and counselling services for online Ss are lacking in some institutions, including mine
#iolchat
IOLblog
Feb 24 @ 12:53 PM EST
@jshamsy
This is another recent obs. from my Ss - different schedules, layout, navigation = frustration
#iolchat
LoriLDuke
Feb 24 @ 12:53 PM EST
@jshamsy
We use a standard course template for every course, with same structure and navigation, so everyone knows what's where
#iolchat
jshamsy
Feb 24 @ 12:54 PM EST
@LoriLDuke
Think that is really important - a balance between individuality & standardization - but some level is needed
#iolchat
IOLblog
Feb 24 @ 12:54 PM EST
@Ms_Imthurn
This seems to go well when we switch to a new LMS (lots of tutorials, etc), but other than that...hit or miss.
#iolchat
jshamsy
Feb 24 @ 12:54 PM EST
@IOLblog
leads to a lot of surprises, frustration, gotch-yas, and overall dissatisfaction
#iolchat
jshamsy
Feb 24 @ 12:55 PM EST
Q4) Assessment of suitability of online learning - I think more programs need to be honest with Ss about rigor of online learning
#iolchat
IOLblog
Feb 24 @ 12:55 PM EST
@LoriLDuke
The need for high-quality, affordable tutoring seems to coming up in more convos these days.
