"Welcome to EdTechAfterDark! Our community was born out of discussions for a rich EdChat type gathering for those of us who are thinking about the digital edu-landscape long after the sun has gone down. For us night owls, when the clock strikes 10PM EST, you’ll find us on Twitter over at #edtechafterdark. All are welcome! Our discussions range from our philosophies about EdTech, digital best practices, and simply sharing our stories." --www.edtechafterdark.com
Welcome to #edtechafterdark! I’m Dan, tech coach from FL, and I’ll be your moderator tonight. This evening we’ll be chatting about Maslow’s Hierarchy of needs! Introduce yourself, role in edu, and favorite movie of last year!
May be in and out a bit. Jeremy, parent (who also works for an education agency)... in terms of new movies (with education in mind), I loved "Eighth Grade" and "Won't You Be My Neighbor?" #EdTechAfterDark
A1 Sorry I’m late! I think you can live without a smart phone - my 19-yr-old has had to based on his poor decisions ... it does require more resourcefulness & responsibility on his part. #EdTechAfterDark
Technology can help or hinder these. We need connections with people, and tech may expand our social circle in a positive way but also pull us away from certain face-to-face relationships. #EdTechAfterDark A2
A2 I think many sts from poverty feel that their devices keep them safe - connect to family, documentation of proud/good moments, & possibilities for employment ... our phones are now mini-computers - & some fear the loss of home - phone keeps all #EdTechAfterDark
A3: it’s going to take teachers proficient in technology and digital citizenship to teach it to our students. That’s training I’m not sure this field is ready to make a priority. #edtechafterdark
A3) Set limits, but more importantly, value the knowledge gained and connections with people you're interested in -- not the numbers (followers, likes, etc.). Once social media is about validation, it's a distraction from the positive. #DigCit#EdTechAfterDark
A3 Cahllenging question 🧐 IMO I think we must encourage/teach value of F2F vs call, call vs text, social media numbers vs quality of time in F2F ... ultimately we need to teach perspective and wisdom in choices (?) #EdTechAfterDark
A4: we base school ratings, teacher pay, and graduation on the ability to pass multiple choice tests. I think that says it all about ability to be an individual. #edtechafterdark
A4 as a whole, I think our school systems have focus that does not allow all sts to find unique selves ... we have great intentions & speak right language yet grades are still based on “my” way instead of “our/your” way ... we either don’t scaffold or release #EdTechAfterDark
No, and part of this is hard to prevent -- there's a curriculum, after all, and expectations at each grade level. But that doesn't mean there aren't 100 ways to get there. I wonder if schools' trend toward compliance is closely related to maintaining control. #EdTechAfterDark A4
A5: I sometimes wish I had the blue check! How do you teach intrinsic confidence so strong it dismisses the yearning for the blue check? #edtechafterdark
Tech should be eliminating this hierarchy. We all can be publishers, producers, directors. Schools should embrace tech as joyful experimentation in creation. #EdTechAfterDark A5
A5 it might be a great lesson to point out the ability of fake identities and trust issues that exist when you don’t have a F2F profile ... reminds me of “The Net” movie with Sandra Bullock #EdTechAfterDark
A6 1st are our tchrs there? Do we understand how to self-actualize within the standards/skills that result in highly-effective teaching? As tchrs we must be life-long learners to increase opportunities for sts to do the same #EdTechAfterDark
A6: I think schools need to embrace technology and teach it’s brilliant possibilities in their classes. But I honestly think we’re too afraid of technology, because of our own ignorance of it, and our lack of professional development in this area. #edtechafterdark
