Charonne King from Sunnyvale. I am in my last two classes of Library Science. Yay!
A1-Copycat research projects were my challenge when I was an elem lib; Ts have a hard time w/open-ended Qs
Q1-What are your obstacles & challenges w/collaboration & planning research-based projects? https://t.co/9R6vNoPXUw
We'll be following the Q1/A1 format for questions and answers
This is a great opportunity to learn and network
How exciting! Welcome to Heather
A1-I encouraged a balance of Qs from Ts but allowances for Stud-generated Qs to foster curiousity
hi - former Texan checking in from Seattle, looking forward to talking research
Hi! Ro, ES Librarian. Mesquite, TX. Getting ready for TBA!
Listening in from Denton & TWU SLIS - Good evening, All
A1: Challenge is helping Ts and Ss emphasize process over product. Rushing to the end = < learning from the journey. 😦
Dayna, a Canadian, joining late to
Stanette Brzezinski, Hill Counrty Elementary
Q1: challenge so many classes only one of me
A1 Getting teachers to go beyond "researching animals" and other things THEY are comfortable with researching
A1 Teachers who have time & willingness to collaborate. I have collaborated several lessons this year but want me.
A1 Dare I say "time" is a huge factor and an big excuse for not doing research.
A1. overstuffed curriculum and overworked teachers.
Hi friend! Happy to have you join
Welcome. Thank you for writing the amazing article.
A1 even tho I mention all the time 2 include me in the research Ts always seem 2 4get
Getting buy in on the importance of citations from teachers that don't teach english...basically all of the other subject areas
I agree! Learning is in the process!!!
Hola! MS Librarian in San Antonio, TX with NISDistrict!
And here's a newbie to LIS 550. Actually it's the first day of class. Welcome.
A1 testing & curriculum that has to be taught - Ts struggle to see time for research
No one is ever a former Texan :)
A1: some Ts are reluctant to let someone else alter an assignment that they are happy with.
My pleasure, Sue. It was gr8t to finally see the work in print. > publicity 4 - perhaps > participants in the future!
A1: Time is always a huge challenge, no matter what the endeavor. I am learning to let go of things that are not as important.
Glad you are joining tonight!
A1 Teachers who have time & willingness to collaborate. I have collaborated several lessons this year but want more.
former resident - always a Texan :)
A1. Time. We do a lot of PBL projects and the amount of planning required by both Ts and TLs is daunting
A1 getting buy in on the importance of citations from some teachers
a1- time is an issue, getting the Ts to include me in collaborative planning, & getting Ts to try resources that are more credible
Hi Dayna! We are so glad to have you join in
A1: Time mostly. Ts are always pressed for it. Im thankful most of our Ts like coming to the library for collab in research.
Yes, thank you so much!!!!
A1: Sometimes the Ss are not the only ones learning proper research skills.
A1-TIME & Ts don't want to collaborate. They just want me to "teach databases" (which I'm taking as 1st step!)
A1 Stepping beyond using just books for information
A1. Time! Time to meet, time to teach S deep research skills, time to reteach as needed.
A1 One obstacle is getting teachers and students to do their part. Encourage them & help them understand what they are doing.
Glad to see you this evening
Good evening ! Stony- TL from Hot Springs, AR. Lakeside High School
I didn't think I was going to make it home from work in time! Just walked in the door :)
A2 just like A1 - best success is when there was TIME to work with individuals and groups and give real-time feedback
A1 Also, I find my admin doesn't realize what my collaborating with Ts entails.
A1 By credible, do you mean databases as opposed 2 free-range Web searching? https://t.co/e7BimGN3pN
a1- time is an issue, getting the Ts to include me in collaborative planning, & getting Ts to try resources that are more credible
A2-Teachers allowing balance of print & digital resources
Repeat Q2: Q2-Share some successes in teaching research skills
A2: working with Ts to take something off of their plates - showing how research projects can cover a TON of TEKS at once = huge!
A2: I love love sharing databases with all grades- especially 8th grade! It's their 1st taste of research at high school level! &..
Hello from Friendswood. K-3 Media Specialist.
Hi friend! Thanks for joining in tonight
A2. Mini-lesson videos. T can use at point-of-need in class.
Some teachers have enthusiastically jumped on the inquiry based research process
a2- I have sent emails out to all T's showing them how to access our databases from our library website.
Hi friend! Thanks for joining in tonight
A2 Taught a lesson on databases v. Non-fiction v. Google search during internship at JH. Great prep for bigger project later.
A1 At the moment, everyone is focused on testing so asking for any activity not related is a tough request.
A2 being willing to be flexible and work on several projects at once with two classes at same time.
A2: Success having this tool is amazing! I am working on research modules now and Google helps share easily
A2 Introducing databases to Ss beginning in Kinder helps set the stage for success through the years of researching
A2 Having 2 students work together to do the research and produce the product...not necessarily a research paper.
These are great - do you make them, or find them online?
A2: teaching about keywords instead of googling the question
A2: scaffolding the lesson between the classroom & library. Can't do it all in one session.
A2: ...it's fun every year! Love sharing #@EasyBib so many empowering tools for Ss ... For life!
Q2 some teachers have come to me wanting to do inquiry based research with no prompting from me.
nice smore! do you find Ts use the research process guide much?
Awesome to see some guybrarian s in
Can you share an example of a research ?
a2 I've hadsome great lessons/conversations with students by introducing
Becky! It is always great to connect! So glad to be learning with you in
teaching that's it's not always about the product
A2 We delved into primary and secondary sources with the SS9 classes. Great conversations and q's that Ts loved hearing.
Big challenge - is there a way 2 relate research to what is tested? Critical thinking? Building background knowledge?
have good things, hopefully "brewing" in HISD!
A3 - Trying research to a Genius hour or PBL project gets buy-in from the kids.
Help me understand issue bcause research/inquiry sub-skills r ALL tested: determining main ideas/making inferences...
brothers in librarianship!
A3 designed a problem for students to solve through research and databases
A2-I do mini lessons to give database overview. Also still show books and aspects of nonfiction (index, TOC)
My Tweetdeck is not refreshing very well in Sorry I'm not responding as much as I would like.
At my DKG meeting tonight, but will read up on all the greatness in the archives!
A3 Ask relevant overarching question and let kids find reasonable solutions
Brava! Inquiry is gaining traction in the classroom Ts world/priorities - gr8t 4 kids; good 4
have a board agenda item on "hold" that would require all HISD schools to have a Librarian, Nurse,& Counselor at every campus!
A3: Shameless plug for resources here - tons of interactive tools: Google, notetaking, read-aloud, citations, adv. search
A3 You could do scavenger hunts, Power Points, or videos to help students and teachers understand the process and final touches.
Wow, Liz. That would be huge!
A2:I show students the databases our school has & alot time to explore I also let T's know that their S's are prepared to research
TexQuest RICKS! As always!
a3 Make it as easy as possible to get to and use. Mobile-friendly website, emails, blog posts
I agree https://t.co/d1je0RCB3U
A3: Shameless plug for resources here - tons of interactive tools: Google, notetaking, read-aloud, citations, adv. search
A2 Gen idea at the beginning of the year when we explore SOLE. After, point of need& reference to anchor charts, and other visuals.
Love this! The big Idea is where the real learning takes place! <3
I'm struggling too so I'm just on Twitter
A3 Idea: Make a statement and then challenge Ss to find text evidence to support statement..but use TexQuest
Are there other databases? HA! LOVE Texquest
A3: I like that has re-designed. I really like the visual topic finder on most of their databases
I'm collaborating on our next digital research kit. https://t.co/aeTpapWkS5 . Making it virtual allows updates, changes, + access
Follow up to text evidence. That's exactly what items writers for the new libn. cert test had to do. A big challenge!!!!
A4 Communicat-go observe Freshman doing research at university to watch habits, gaps, etc.
Q3. We are finding that the term database could be a turn off to some teachers and students. How about digital resources?
A3 EXPLORE EXPLORE EXPLORE! Now, as we research Ss, start out with online resources b4 internet, they feel comfortable with it.
A3: I wish we could get alumni in college to and tell Ss about importance of databases in college... Hmm... Must do this!
Yes! IP authenitcation is a big one!
A4 expose them 2 as many resources as possible & teach them how 2 use them correctly
A4 ideally…be open when needed - more after school hours not during class - when Ss are in class - encourage local library
Please take resource survey - https://t.co/0nJJU1Rba5 STEAM and Nonfic/Reference eBooks Adding new stuff w/ your help!
Has anyone closely checked out Gale's CLIC???
This is so great! Thanks for sharing this w/
A4 contribute when we coplan/coteach/coassess Ss learning This is best/only way 2 make our contrib. measurable!
A4: I like talking to former students
I like digital content also . https://t.co/c52g1OLlea
Q3. We are finding that the term database could be a turn off to some teachers and students. How about digital resources?
A3: Last year I Tweeted to and while we taught a lesson. The next day they responded to us which was fun!
A4 Using Formative assessment strategies during library teaching sessions to measure students and their progress
A4: College readiness requires grit, dealing w/ ambiguity, curiosity, time mgmt, collaboration - EXACTLY what we do with research!
Google@vs databases?? We all know where students want to start ???
A4. Teach S how to think critically about sources of info...what's best source for my info need...is there bias...etc.
We've Skyped with https://t.co/XbqrY1XZ1A
A3: Last year I Tweeted to and while we taught a lesson. The next day they responded to us which was fun!
A3: I think there are many opportunities to make this more interactive for Ss... Must think out of box in future!
I showed that to some Ts &Ss the other day and they loved it! https://t.co/HpcwJGrPZ8
A3: I like that has re-designed. I really like the visual topic finder on most of their databases
A4 Sneaking research skills into everything not just the classes that come into the library, go and invite yourself into classes.
a4 Don't be afraid to focus & help with the struggle, the need to keep trying. Amazing how much a Google search changes by one word
It is disconcerting 2 me that word "database" is a turn-off 2 some Ss/Ts. "Digital content" works, but why?
A4 we brought in an academic librarian to talk to students
A4: College readiness - more than a regurgitation of facts for research. Have to teach analysis and reflection.
A4-it's not just finding the info--it's also reading and understanding. Not sure other than repetition how to combat this
Love it! Database sounds so complicated 😬 I like "Digital resources" better!!! Agree! https://t.co/ciZgaY2WPS
Q3. We are finding that the term database could be a turn off to some teachers and students. How about digital resources?
A4 Every lesson begins w/"Every skill we practice today you will use in ES, MS, HS, College, these EXACT skills are useful 4life"
A4: research ties into digital citizenship- young students must find the 'just right' database to fit their needs.
What a great opportunity!
Our time is coming to an end. A huge THANKS to for being our guest!
Our time is coming to an end. A huge THANKS to for being our guest!
A4: sneaking little tiny mini-research projects all throug the year helps removes the fear of THE BIG RESEARCH project.
A4: Show them the tools and best practices. Be available to help them when questions arise.. Learn together!
Always great to see the quality people in Good night!
A4-our HS librarians show Seniors college library sites and help the navigate their richer digital content.
Database sounds a bit like jargon. We could argue the entire Internet is one big database
Yes! 2 acknowledging where Ss prefer 2 start... then show them all the other places they can go! (w/a nod to Dr. Seuss)
Argh! these always go so fast! Thanks for letting me tag along!
Great chat tonight. Thanks everyone. Archive will be ready tomorrow. Look for message in tlc and Twitter.
That was a fast and furious . Thank you and everyone else's wisdom.
thanks to all for the great ideas!
database is too specific (google’s a database), but digital resources seems too broad
Thanks to everyone for all of the great ideas!
Fastest 30 mins ever! Thanks for a great chat ,friends! I hope everyone has a great week!
Thank you, Still thinking about the "database" vs "digital resources" ?! Thanks & good night to all!
yes yes! And make it available forever! Great idea!
Ditto. I need to actually visit Texas! I think that would be fun.
students are very comfortable I love watching them come in and show independence building
