#musedchat Archive
Each Monday evening at 8PM EST, music teachers get together and share ideas about important topics within music education. It’s a great chance to interact directly with educators from all over the world and to get new tips and tricks to help you succeed in the classroom. The entire #musedchat discussion is organized and moderated by Joe Guarr.

Q1: Does your district currently have a 'pay to participate' plan in place for music? What about athletics? What are the fees?
-
Depends on what you mean - everything has fees and raises money to function especially MarB ShCh, WG
-
A1: I think our HS programs rely mostly on band boosters. Often sports and music participants pay for part of their uniforms
-
A1: Our district has a $95 fee for the year if you want to play sports. No such fee for music participation.
-
That $95 helps pay for uniforms, travel, referees, etc. Basically supplements athletic budget.
-
Q2: When there are fees involved (band camp, instrument rental, trips) are you able to offer need-based assistance? (1/2)
-
Q2: (2/2) How do you determine the recipients of any need-based assistance?
-
The MS instr students at my school rent/buy their instr although all the band dir I know have loaned instr. for free when needed
-
Over time, programs have built up a collection of instruments for loan. Guidance dept weighs in on if they have to pay
-
Ours does something similar. Counselors refer to free/reduced lunch list when making assistance decisions.
-
Q3: Have you ever found any of the fees associated w/ music to be a barrier to entry for students?
-
When we take pricey field trips it usually puts a fundraising burden on students and families who don't pay outright.
-
See this happen with our Chicago trip every year. We try to fundraise to have $$$ available for scholarships
-
A1 we have a maintenance fee does that count? Antoine Buttigieg here from Woodbridge Ontario Canada HS instrumental music teacher
-
-
Hascreating scholarships developed any issues in terms of who gets what and the perception of fairness?
-
A3 not as of yet, for the instrument maintenance fee. If so no student has brought it to my attention.
-
Not so far. Our admin reviews all schol. applications with us. Families understand some need help.
-
who determines who gets it? Is there a stigma that comes with receiving it?
-
A1 our fee is low at 50$ for the entire year..
-
We had admin that was not interested in the issues that might arise. Only able to reduce everyone's price equally
-
It's all based on need, things like free/reduced lunch. Application process is totally confidential.
-
What about benefit concerts for raising money? Anyone had success there?
-
My younger brother's school did this to fundraise for an NYC trip. Tipped a conga upside down, asked for donations
-
that is fair but will admin then pony up the difference?
