Welcome To Tonight: Getting Students Ready For The Next Level...K-12 through University. Pls Intro yourselves.
We will be using the Q & A method to keep the conversation going.
Hi everyone - Jill from NC director of personalized learning
Good to be here. Author and consultant from SC here.
Hi everyone, Rachelle, Spanish teacher from Pittsburgh, :)
Evening Evan Robb middle school principal- Happy to be here!
How does everyone use e-portfolios in their instruction?
Hello, Katrina from Charlotte
Elizabeth K-5 principal now, fifth grade teacher forever--South Portland, ME
We will start soon. Seems as if and are running slow.
Good Evening - Michelle from TX - Instructional Technology Specialist
Hey Jill is out of town. Can I get a retweeter tonight?
Traveling back to Charlotte I will be in and out.
Q1: Do the different levels in your district play the blame game? Elem didn't get them ready for MS, MS for HS...etc.
Thanks. Can you turn on the signal.
Hello! Ashley Taylor, Reading Specialist from West Virginia.
A1) We try to have some articulation across the different levels of edu system to look for solutions.
Hi all, 4th grade teacher from CA
A1: I work in multiple systems + hear the blame game! A mentor said to me 1 time - "the families send the best they have"
Vertical articulation and clear priorities at ea grade level are essential.
A1:Have to stop blaming and start closing gaps.
But isn't our job to get them ready as possible for the "next" level be it 1st grade or HS?
A1 Yes, I have heard this at times,
Not necessarily. Our job is to teach the standards that have been articulated the best we can.
A1:If possible, find time to vertically plan and collaborate.
HS teachers in particular seem to put too much pressure on "you have to know it for the next year/course"
Rt of Q1: Do the different levels in your district play the blame game? Elem didn't get them ready for MS, MS for HS...etc.
But we have to have them ready to go out the door to college or career?
Can elementary schools give all A's to keep the peace????
will can create universal to ensure translates between schools
Again, if there is a viable curriculum, then if ea T does what he/she is supposed to do, that is achieved
Q2: Should we be thinking 12-K and not K-12? Analogy...12 grade = car off the assembly line....K chassis put in place.
Count down to w/ host tonight on Work Life Balance...
45 mins away.
Join us!
Vertical & Horizontal Articulation is key!
A2) Idea is to think of skills our students need to be successful in workplace & going back from their to K? Yes, makes sense.
A2: I think the factory model analogy is inappropriate or of limited use here. Thinking of Ken Robinson's video...
Along with prioritization. Not all learning outcomes are equally important.
A2 I like the approach but with so many schools out there
Hi - Mike from NJ jumping in late...
My page https://t.co/XtECnyNtva We need to work on skills students will need in their future. https://t.co/V3kZHMsDaE
A2) Idea is to think of skills our students need to be successful in workplace & going back from their to K? Yes, makes sense.
How do you determine which ones are more important?
All levels of education should be working more closely with each other during the course of the school year.
Rt of Q2: Should we be thinking 12-K and not K-12? Analogy...12 grade = car off the assembly line....K chassis put in place.
A2 If we thought 12-K, we’d need to really know what we really want Ss to be able to do when done w/school. Do we know this?
Hi Mike. Talking K-12 blame game & whether we should think 12-K rather than K-12.
Hello everyone, Iqra, future Chemistry teacher from NY
Hi everyone LAN Tech and TIS in KY
Absolutely! If we could move toward more REAL collaboration time...
they are all equally important. Articulation and differentiation is key for the individual learner
hey what all is being discussed tonight?
And the things that are very new or diff at a grade level, like argumentation starting at grade 6
Anyone using google forums as a study tool rather than a testing site?
When my DD was in 6th grade she worked with 1st grade and both levels loved this learning experience
One of the teachers in my dist. uses the hint button in forums as a study tool for when ss are confused! It is really cool!
Bringing out my inner Hattie here, I'd say good core instruction makes the biggest difference!
K-12 blame game. Getting Ss ready for next level. Change thinking from K-12 to 12-K.
we use forms as a data collection tool to be used as a discussion tool
So many possibilties with forms
https://t.co/ygLUQa2IBM
we use forms as a data collection tool to be used as a discussion tool
Q3: How can we get vertical collaboration time? Who's responsibility is it? T's or Admins?
look for knowledge, skills dispositions that we are always assessing across grade levels
But without the continuity of instruction .....
A3) I think it's a combination of everyone's responsibility to find vertical collab time. Communicate with each other.
I find that the leap from middle to HS is a vast chasm. Articulation almost invisible.
this certainly does happen with us, this year we started vertical teaming
A3: all are responsible. Leverage 21st century tools to collaborate virtually...and at any time
I wonder if this is true of all districts... what about 12th to college.
https://t.co/5rMep5RNBj
I find that the leap from middle to HS is a vast chasm. Articulation almost invisible.
Q3b: Is it "departmental" from the top down (12-K)?
As a MS Prin, I am always curious about why this is. Is it a function of how HS is set up?
Q3: admin. needs to model vertical collaboration and set as priority for teachers
Rt of Q3: How can we get vertical collaboration time? Who's responsibility is it? T's or Admins?
Rt of Q3: How can we get vertical collaboration time? Who's responsibility is it? T's or Admins?
This is partly social/emotional. To many physical changes happening sometime to conc. on school.
that is a lot people to hit along the way
That's a big leap too. Of course I work w low-performing schools etc so there are a lot of things not working.
I agree. Start with what your are building towards and take the steps to reach that goal!
Rt of Q3b: Is it "departmental" from the top down (12-K)?
Does the HS let the MS know what we need? Does MS tell Upper El what they needs and so on?
I agree. Start with what your are building towards and take the steps to reach that goal!
A3 Admin models expectation, Ts will rise to meet expectation of collaboration. Collective responsibility.
we have some many schools at each level where students move around makes it hard
A3 One thing that I’m a bit confused about: are “disciplines” a good thing or not in schools? Silos and all that?
Prof Susan joining from IL
Today is NewYear or Naw-Ruz ancestral in Iran & region: also Zoroastrian & seasonal: equinox.
But T's have a lot to do if time not specifically carved out prob won't happen. Admin priority?
all this 12-K talk. We know that Ss don't learn compartmentally! Why do we cont to teach by dept.?
We need a standard articulation format. What about when students change school districts? Where are they put?
A3 everyone is responsible for solving the problem of increased collaboration time but admins are responsible for executing plan
I am not in those conversations
Transience makes it even more important to have horizontal articulation.
Hi i'm new to this. Johnson from NY. I think there is a need for top down modeling and communication.
Yrs ago I studied the work of Marion Brady - he says disciplines not needed. Intriguing. I'm not sure where I stand.
Q3c: If you are a U teacher/prof...are Ss coming out of HS ready for college?
what's your plan? Teach by even MORE standardized test scores?
I had former students come back from HS, College & work to talk with classes about importance of school & career preparation
A3 Everyone has a resp, find time somehw, lots of ways to communic w/ at any time,
we chucked those silos out the window in a VoTech HS. Results both academic and social skyrocketed
I think beyond a certain point (4th grade?) treating “math” (etc.) in isolation is more damaging than helpful.
A3c depends on what you are looking for. I looking out of the box thinking. Hard to find
Is that because of Std testing? No thinking just bubbling?
But... colleges still demand that students have completed certain math courses
Yup. This is why talking about vertical articulation is puzzling to me - seems the path you describe is more helpful
everything is presented to them in a rigid format and I want them to be student driven
and Sci, Eng and SS. Question on my daughters pre reg from have you taken Chemistry.
are we providing Ss w/experiences to inspire out of box thinking?
Believe me, I know. As a HS “math” T, there are few things more frustrating to me.
That's the issue w/ stand testing. No complex thinking. also how would testing comps grade that consistently?
Funny thing though: you can take Eng electives & colleges recognize them no problem. Math? Not so much.
that is the real question and should start in elementary school
std testing kills innovation and creative thinking, students taught to memorize specific problems.
But we've always done it this way. We can't question tradition, can we? 😯 Need our medieval structures.
https://t.co/4ZNZYJoNtr
all this 12-K talk. We know that Ss don't learn compartmentally! Why do we cont to teach by dept.?
PLS give example of math elective...Thanks.
Because Colleges want it, HS and Ss must suffer! I think Colleges make exceptions to those rules. https://t.co/vhRdGd4O4A
But... colleges still demand that students have completed certain math courses
I mean: Ss can take “Shakespeare” instead of “English 4”. No acceptable replacement for precalculus.
Catch the irony in last tweet.
Dynamic institutions have dynamic matrix structures. Collab vert&horiz w diverse teams.
we all know testing doesn't measure anything but you coloring skills
Colleges are throwing out ACT/SAT's. Say GPA a better predictor of success. This still assumes specific course work. Can we fix?
IF we do proficiency-based the right way, colleges will have to adapt transcipt expectations
I am for a portfolio type of acceptance but that may be a ways off
Growth mindset needed to hear inspiration for thinking. PBL supports this beautifully.
Awesome-every S should take this! Our kids have no room in schedules for math elec. :(
I think they already are, at least in ME. The Q is the "IF" part. https://t.co/KUDaPTybGH
IF we do proficiency-based the right way, colleges will have to adapt transcipt expectations
The key: SS have to WANT to learn. How can we create the desire, or need, pencil and paper aren't working anymore.
Q4: How do we fix or change a system that runs down hill....13-16 to 9-12 to 6-8 to 3-5 to K-2?
I know I'm prejudiced, but I'd star from the middle out! https://t.co/J6qY0Y744O
Q4: How do we fix or change a system that runs down hill....13-16 to 9-12 to 6-8 to 3-5 to K-2?
Desire to learn comes w/ effective teacher teaching with fidelity. Improve quality of Ts & Ts work conditions.
If math instruction used more authentic prob solving, there'd no need for this course
If Algebra 2 (etc.) wasn’t stuffed to the gills with irrelevancies, that could happen.
Desire to learn is internal and often suppressed by conditions. Ts can try to improve this.
A4 that is a tough question. Not sure there is an easy solution. Poor implementations of large plans usually kill it
Start by understanding that learning happens and all disciplines are complimentary & connected. https://t.co/P49fTsDx42
A3c: 😁😂😃😄😅😆😂😯😕😮😨😧
https://t.co/0YfOJOgkkb
Q3c: If you are a U teacher/prof...are Ss coming out of HS ready for college?
I take it this means yes and no?
A4 In a public school system (i.e.,educ ≤ 18 yr old), decide what you want future citizens to know and teach it. Ignore college.
A4: find pockets of innovation and grow them
I totally agree with that
Q5: What is your one take away from tonight?
And there's the rub. We don't have a "why" that's been articulated K-12. has written about this!
All learning is understanding relationships. Focus on circle of control to overcome barriers.
A5 the last 30 mins of this chat went really fast

Q3c: If you are a U teacher/prof...are Ss coming out of HS ready for college?
I'm thinking about the use/utility of the disciplines. And about vertical articulation pre K and post 12.
Thanks for allowing the MS Prin from ME butt in on a very inspiring chat. Enjoy your week.
Social and Emotional learning is an intricate part to this literacy
how do we make that an acronym
Everyone is always welcome. stop by each week.
No next week due to Easter.
A5: educators have to keep talking to each other--across classrooms, across schools thanks all--good night
As we close out tonight there is one more scheduled tweet. Thanks everyone for a good chat.
There are plenty of people who’ve articulated “why” (Noddings, Rose, Dewey, Plato!). Too few listen.
If you have a topic you would like to discuss pls tweet it to or I. Thanks

Q3c: If you are a U teacher/prof...are Ss coming out of HS ready for college?
I meant a unified "why" for K-12. As a national goal. But there are those pesky "states' rights"
