Welcome to tonight's #octmchat! Tonight's host is @jcanigl1! Looking forward to sharing and learning more about PhET simulations in the math classroom!
  • ohioctm - Moderator Jan 17 @ 8:31 PM EST
Introduce yourself with your name, location, and role. #octmchat
  • jcanigl1 Jan 17 @ 8:31 PM EST
#octmchat I use the many math simulations in my class. We modeled the pendulum in the Pit and the Pendulum and found that in fact Edgar Allen Poe does know math!

We will be using the Q1/A1 format tonight for our questions. Remember to use #octmchat in your tweets and use the "latest" view to see the most recent tweets!

Hi! I'm Christina... one of the math consultants/coaches @HamiltonCoESC and also the most recent past-president of @ohioctm... I'm excited to learn more about PHET simulations! Thanks for faciliating tonight, @jcanigl1 #octmchat

Here is Q1 for #octmchat. Remember to use A1 for Answer 1 and include #octmchat in each of your Tweets. Here is the link to check out PhET if you haven't already: https://t.co/J1A2dDloDd

#octmchat PhET was orginially a physics lab-type program. They added chemistry, bio, and math. The new math simulations are great for your classroom. Students can manipulate variables to understand the relationship among them.
  • AmyWettengel Jan 17 @ 8:37 PM EST
A1: I've never used one but interested in learning more! #octmchat
  • JacquiLehmkuhl Jan 17 @ 8:37 PM EST
A1: I have not used PhET, but our science department has utilized this a lot. Funny story is that they just shared this link with me recently. They love it! This gives me another reason to explore. #octmchat
  • mathbarb Jan 17 @ 8:38 PM EST
A1 This is new for me. #octmchat
  • rachaelhgorsuch Jan 17 @ 8:39 PM EST
Joining late, but never late than never! Rachael Gorsuch from @ColumbusAcademy in Columbus #octmchat

Q2 is coming up in one minute! #octmchat
  • jcanigl1 Jan 17 @ 8:40 PM EST
#octmchat Some of my favorites are the Moving Man...as a man is walking one can see the distance, velocity and accelleration. So helpful when teaching calculus.
  • chrissybug24 Jan 17 @ 8:40 PM EST
A1: I haven't ever used the PHET simulations, but I just tried out the area model simulation and and checked out the "game" #octmchat
  • rachaelhgorsuch Jan 17 @ 8:40 PM EST
A1: Haven't used PhET yet, but have spent some time learning more about if this past year. #octmchat
  • ohioctm - Moderator Jan 17 @ 8:41 PM EST
Here is Q2 for #octmchat. If you haven't tried any simulations, which ones might you want to try?
  • chrissybug24 Jan 17 @ 8:41 PM EST
Glad you're able to join #octmchat tonight, Rachael! :)

A2 what grade levels do the simulations address? #octmchat
  • jcanigl1 Jan 17 @ 8:45 PM EST
#octmchat Hi Barb, they go from elementary to high school. What I also love about the programs are the wonderful resources that other teachers share. They include videos so that you can experience them.
  • AmyWettengel Jan 17 @ 8:46 PM EST
A2: I think I'm most interested, at the moment, in the area model applications. So applicable to what several of my teachers are working on. #octmchat
  • ohioctm - Moderator Jan 17 @ 8:47 PM EST
Q3 is coming up in one minute! #octmchat
  • JacquiLehmkuhl Jan 17 @ 8:47 PM EST
A2: I was just getting triggy on the Trig Tour. #octmchat
  • ohioctm - Moderator Jan 17 @ 8:48 PM EST
    Here is Q3 for #octmchat.
  • rachaelhgorsuch Jan 17 @ 8:48 PM EST
A2: I heard about a math teacher pairing the Pendulum Lab with the English teacher teaching "The Pit and the "Pendulum". Kids had to design a modeling question and pursue. I thought that idea was awesome! #octmchat
  • mathbarb Jan 17 @ 8:48 PM EST
A2 Since we are a small group tonight, who is in charge/ creating these? (I’m in a car on the way home. ) #octmchat
  • chrissybug24 Jan 17 @ 8:49 PM EST
A2: I'm just getting familiar with the site... Do I need to "download" each one I want to check out, @jcanigl1? #octmchat
  • jcanigl1 Jan 17 @ 8:51 PM EST
#octmchat I love the Plinko...It is so hard to simulate and rather expensive to get manipulatives to do the same processes.
  • mathbarb Jan 17 @ 8:52 PM EST
A2 How are your Ss using them? #octmchat
  • jcanigl1 Jan 17 @ 8:53 PM EST
#octmchat I simply click on the module that I would want and then see the video. I also investigate what other teachers propose. These teachers are so creative
  • ohioctm - Moderator Jan 17 @ 8:54 PM EST
Last question (Q4) coming up in one minute. #octmchat
  • ohioctm - Moderator Jan 17 @ 8:55 PM EST
Here is Q4 for #octmchat. Be sure to build your PLN and follow new people from tonight's chat!
  • jcanigl1 Jan 17 @ 8:56 PM EST
#octmchat I have future teachers and they use them to model topic. I often ask students to predict what will happen. Then they test their conjectures.
  • mathbarb Jan 17 @ 8:57 PM EST
Love this idea! Thanks for sharing!! #octmchat
    In reply to @jcanigl1
  • rachaelhgorsuch Jan 17 @ 8:57 PM EST
A4: Honestly, I feel like that asset of PhET is that kids can play. I think it's a great intro, with some follow-up discussion to solidify the knowledge the kids are experiencing. #octmchat
  • ohioctm - Moderator Jan 17 @ 9:00 PM EST
Thank you for joining tonight's #octmchat! The conversation doesn't have to stop, though. Use #octmchat and continue sharing!
