#2ndchat Archive
#2ndchat is a Twitter hashtag that can be used to chat, collaborate, and grow with other second grade educators from around the world. Every other week we will discuss a different topic. It's a great way to help grow your PLN (Professional/Personal Learning Network) and share ideas with others.

Welcome friends. I'm excited to help co-host with tonight and talk about number routines.
Welcome! I am so exited to have back with us to talk about math!
Let's begin with introducing ourselves and sharing where you teach and what you teach.
Excited to talk about number routines! They can really help students build number sense without worksheets!
I am so glad you came! This is going to be a good chat for everyone!
HI! I'm Carol I teach 2nd grade in Birmingham, AL.
Evening, I'm Mandy and I teach 2nd in Powell, Ohio where the temperatures are finally feeling a little fall-ish
Good Evening everyone! I'm Lisa from Evansville, IN. I teach 2nd grade.
It's a little cooler here but not quite feeling like fall. We are also desperate for rain. Over a month with 0 rain!
without worksheets, I love this! https://t.co/vumBOh6yTY

Hello! Mollie from Columbus, Ohio. Excited to have remembered tonite's chat and to see my colleague co hosting!
I love that all get connected with the chat but how awesome would it be to be a little closer!
Thanks for joining us tonight,
Hi, Mollie! Welcome! We are glad you are here. is awesome!
SO excited to have you joining us tonight!
Worksheets are so limiting. I can change a routine quickly by what I am observing!
Q1: What does number sense mean to you?
I am a second grade student teacher in Hudsonville, Michigan! Working on a degree in Early Childhood :)
A1: It means being able to take apart & put together numbers in different ways;using place value to help you solve problems
A1: Ss are able to think flexibly about numbers, seeing patterns and automatically recognizing arrangements.
I'm using 2 devices tonight; just realized I was on my class twitter account.
I love that you are here as a student teacher. I SO wish Twitter & chats had been around when I was student teaching
Glad you are joining us as you, now.
:) I've done that before!
A1 I think of number sense as understanding the patterns of numbers and how they work
A1: I think it also means being able to use a pattern that works with smaller numbers can apply to larger problems.
different ways is a key point to make for number sense.
wrote, “Number sense relates to student’s ability to make sense of numerical relationships.”
Multiple endless ways of representing numbers
my Ss are starting to say, I know 3 + 4 is 7 so 30 + 40 is 70. Making larger numbers easier.
A1: being intuitive with numbers, using efficient strategies to solve problems, solid foundation in place value and patterns
My kids today heard a problem on 90 + 57. They changed it to 100 + 47 which was much easier.
The ability to manipulate numbers to create understanding
These are key words, solid foundation in place value https://t.co/qtOr4AesBP

We would love for you to hop by our . We are talking about number routines!
Love manipulate numbers and create understanding, they have to create it for themselves as mathematicians.
Q2: What are your thoughts on these indicators for number sense? in previous tweet
A1: not about speed and memorization.
A2: I think it is so powerful to teach kids what is an unreasonable and reasonable answer.
A2: I don't think I've considered connections among operations enough, recently. Sometimes tricky for Ss.
A2: Another indicator to really think about is seeing numbers as useful, maybe this would help with attitudes about math!
A2: I also think there are too much of teaching math concepts in isolation. Students need to see math concepts relationally.
Q3: Is it important to help students understand number sense and be able to articulate some of the indicators?
I talked my parents about this during conferences this year. Once students see the relationship subtraction is easier!
A2: that children need to construct an understanding of numbers learn thru immersion in rich tasks - not by rote or algorithm only
A3: YES! They need to be able to know why we do the math we do.
We spend time talking about the mathematical practices, pondering these indicators as another angle math dispositions
A3: I think kids are like adults, they like to know the "why" behind the lessons. Why are we needing to learn this?
So happy to see reading some tweets.
A3: yes! They all contribute to multiple entry points to prob solving which translates to growing a growth mindset in math.
YES! Rich tasks are so powerful!
A4: I did know the parts but did not really put it in the mindset of a trajectory.
Where do you think 2nd graders most commonly fall?
A4: I don't think I had ever sequenced these number sense learning ideas, but it makes great sense.
A4: I also think this trajectory could help us identify Ss needs, especially for struggling Ss.
That's what I thought. I knew about the different places but not in that order.
I think compensation but just did some intervention assessments this week and made some earlier trajectory discoveries
Thanks for agreeing and joining us tonight
I think they can go back depending on the size of the number too.
Great question to ask. I don't know if we provide enough opportunities and wonder if programs include it enough.
So glad mentioned assessments, Q5 coming up.
I wonder about different schools I've taught in & those that had a math basal-not much thought about the individual class needs
Q5: Does anyone have assessments they like to use to help understand a student’s number sense?
A5: Developmental Math Assessment & an old Math Their Way assessment, both are 1:1 interviews with prompts https://t.co/5PjVUaTKt7
A5: We use the PNOA (Primary Number & Operations Assessment). It is not required but I LOVE giving the interviews.
Where is PNOA found, that one is new to me.
I am trying to find a link to share more. It is SO good!
Okay moving right along with tonights Q6 coming soon and I hope everyone will share all their wonderful ideas
Q6: says, we need to set up number sense experiences, discussions, & support Ss understandings. How do we do this?
I have classroom routines that I use each week: count around the room or number talks; I also use to build number sense
A6:I have classroom routines that I use each week: count around the room or number talks; I also use to build number sense
I decided this year to start 3 mornings of the week with a number warm up as Ss enter, settle in and read our morning news/message.
A6: You have to be INTENTIONAL about building in number sense routines.
A6: We start 3 mornings of the week with a number warm up as Ss enter, settle in and read our morning news/message.
Q6 engage in daily "number talk" routines; mental math while defending their thinking; looking for lots of ways to solve
Q6: allowing for students to explore numbers thru games and daily routines. Lots of work with the 100s chart.
Do you have the Number Talks book form ? It's fabulous!
Can you tell us more about working with the 100s chart?
Q6: love doing number talks. Started to build routine before things got crazy w/end of quarter. Need to get back on track.
Q6: I also like to play Skype Mystery Number or Mystery Place Value Skype
What does this look like?
I know the author of that book. She's awesome and taught in my school district.
A6: One of our morning warmups is How many ways can we make ___? As Ss write an idea they need to make it differ than others.
Mystery Number Skype: Each class chooses a 2 digit number. Classes ask yes/no ?s to try to guess the mystery #
Mystery Place Value skype, classes have a 3 digit number & do the same- lots of place value thinking
How nice your district has developed resources around a good routine.
Have you seen the game Digit Place, a Secret Number Quest? Instead of yes or no you give clues about digit and place
The PNOA is a math interview assessment. Students are tested on place value, counting, and more
I have not. Is it a digital game or other type of game?
Have you ever tried S led number talks? is awesome to capture their thinking
I use Explain Everything for this! I LOVE it!
Interesting idea, thanks for sharing
Use the comic section, Ss love it!
Q7: Number sense routines allow short bursts for working w/ numbers to deepen understandings, how can we make time within our days?
I love having number talks ready in . Then I can just let students share/write/record.
A7: I think we HAVE to build it into our day! We all have these little 10 minute odd times here & there. Use that time well!
A6: We also collect data once a week as a warm up and interactive write a generalization.
A7: I have a 12 minute break between lunch & specials on 3 days a week. It is a great time for quick routines.
A7: starting with a routine as a warm up to lesson, putting games in guided math rotation, using
A7: I have a 20 minute break from recess to lunch a few times a week. I use that for .
Yes, all schedules can have odd times. I think doing these away from a workshop keeps math alive in our days
Yes, all schedules can have odd times. I think doing these away from a workshop keeps math alive in our days
A7 it's how I begin math each day; it's often more rich than the lesson that follows
A7: I incorporate into my morning meeting a few times a week.
A7- number talks and open ended "challenges" has some neat ideas that require deep thinking
We are collecting lots of data right now because we are running a school wide election between Stick Dog & Duck!
Q7: What is one take away from our discussion tonight you will try to implement or think more about?
interesting point about building number sense!
Q7: I think making sure I make notes of what I observed in routines so the next one is even more powerful & strategic.
I'll have to look at , thanks for sharing.
A7: I think making sure I make notes of what I observed in routines so the next one is even more powerful & strategic.
A7: it's not easy with this year's schedule, but I value doing number sense so it's one of my non-negotiables for each day.
A7: I want to think about discussing the number sense indicators we discussed early on.
I'd like to learn more about secret number quest?
