#miched Archive
The #michED chat is a grassroots effort dedicated to giving teachers, students, and parents across Michigan a bigger voice in the conversation about education in our state. We welcome all voices through a variety of projects, media, and social networking. We’re trying to address educational issues through apolitical conversation, spreading ideas and stories of success from Michigan classrooms across the state, and helping teachers and students regain the courage to connect and demonstrate that schools in Michigan are creating amazing opportunities for learning. We want the face and voice of education in Michigan to be a mural of shared experiences and positive examples of connected learning.

Q1: How does your classroom design impact your Ss behavior/learning?
Liz from St Clair Shores, looking to pick up on some tips.
. prof working on excited to be here
A1 classroom design impacts student learning by directly impacting our approach to instruction
Mike , second grade in Chelsea. My admin was just talking to me about classroom environment.
Rachelle from St. Clair. Sec. Supervisor for . Excited that Holland Woods MS was removed from Priority status yesterday!
chasing about classroom design! Others would love to here about your PBL on it!
A1: Classroom layout impacts talk time, group work, discussion, and my expectations for those things. Ss in groups from the start
Abby Allen, Ingham ISD, Special Ed Supervisor
A1 just like your schedule, what you make time (space) for is what you convey as important. We do this everyday, must be important
A1: When Ss are comfortable and their needs are met, their focus is on the learning (distractions/discomfort eliminated)
Mary Maslak student teacher in Ann Arbor. Looking forward to hearing new ways to incorporate movement into the classroom
Congrats! What great news!
it's great to have admin support!
Todd checking in from Warren, Just got home from son's band concert
Jenny from Kent State. Happy to join
A1:With mobile furniture, we can change room around to fit needs. ADD/ADHD kids enjoy the swivel chairs and swivel all day long, ha.
A1 giving my students choice to work and learn in areas other than their desk, usually results in more on task, less behavior issues
Q1: How does your classroom design impact your Ss behavior/learning? (in case you missed it)
If you're into education, seems as though there's a chat/tweet up tonight with a bunch of student teachers. Follow the # for more
Hi thanks for joining tonight!
A1: Design has basic structure but gives room for student choice.
Derek, 5th grade teacher from Kentwood. Looking forward to seeing how people address classroom environment w/ realistic resources.
-Crystal Brown- 4th grade Gibraltar -MSTA Elementary Director.
A1: Design is so important for learning. It dictates how we are grouped, our view point and sets mood
A1: We cannot forget the power of school budgets on classroom environment. Ts and grant $ only go so far.
YES! Getting needs met is KEY https://t.co/joXOVSf5sK
A1: When Ss are comfortable and their needs are met, their focus is on the learning (distractions/discomfort eliminated)
A1: Love seeing different ways classes are being set up. I would have loved those options as a Ss, especially seating options.
A1: We have a variety of spaces within our classroom, including a "living room"! These spaces allow diverse activities and movement!
A1) Design done well can create spaces for collaboration, personalization, social and academic comfort for Ss
A1 layout tells students who their biggest learning resources are- peers or teacher?
A1) it is important for students to have a calm and comfortable learning environment sothey can focus on work and learning
New to chats? Begin with "A" and corresponding number before response. Don't forget hashtag! https://t.co/p7PWyM7W6Y
Q1: How does your classroom design impact your Ss behavior/learning? (in case you missed it)
A1 your classroom design conveys what you find important. The flow of movement in your classroom is also dependent on your design
A1 Just enough space for 8 tables of 6th graders, lends itself to teamwork and really engaging whole class discussions!
A1 it's like the saying, "Would you want to be a student in your class(room)?"
A1: In the 1st grade class where I am student teaching, the students behavior and learning corresponds with where they are situated
A1 when Ss have a voice in creating classroom design that works for them, they feel ownership over learning that takes place
A1: proximity is a huge piece. When I'm closer to my students, I feel they feel more connected to me and the content.
Hey Spanish teacher from Michigan
a1} my classroom has posters of Andre the Giant™ all over so the kids know they can grow up big and strong but maybe not that big
A1: management becomes more accessible with the layout of a classroom: you can see all your students and be proactive not reactive
A1: My Ss get a lot of choice in where they want to learn/work so I try to have a lot of different options for them.
A1 positive classroom design can set the stage for classroom postive culture
A1: We are pretty packed. We have tiers of chairs and that puts some limits on us....Looking for some inspiration!
As adults, we often stand when we work...great that kids are getting that option now too! https://t.co/9pRm2en13m
A1: Love seeing different ways classes are being set up. I would have loved those options as a Ss, especially seating options.
A1: Having other tools available to help Ss improves environment-exercise balls for bouncey Ss, walking space, etc, welcome everyone
I absolutely agree! My students are always more focused when they choose the work space that is best for them!
A1.1: Aside from occasionally rearranging chair set-up, I struggle with finding ways to utilized new design ideas in band.
A1: I wish I had a room designed for my classes of 37 instead of 25, comfy chairs, enough space for centers...
A1: Sadly some design features are out of Teachers control: Lighting, desks, class room size etc
A1: We encourage students to be active listeners (eyes, ears, heart, body) wherever they are sitting
A1: Setup deals with whole group work, individual work, and collaboration and student expectations at each place in the classroom
A1: Remember that learning space is only as good as the instruction and the intent behind it.
A1 My classroom allows for quick and easy transition from instruction to application.
A1 When everyone is cramped, as is frequently the case, we are uncomfortable in our space!
A1 - I always had a simple design, but responsive and flexible. I wanted students go feel comfortable making adjustments.
classroom design is only the springboard for engagement. Need to provide the time AND space to collaborate.
Hey all, Jeremey HS Env Sci and Bio
Hi ! Carolyn from Grand Rapids
A1: Room design shows I value communication & Ss working together. Model & pract. behavior so we can learn https://t.co/T8wL9LhcjQ
Interesting...Can you explain this further?
A1: watched solicit s voice re how they felt classroom seating impacted their behavior/learning https://t.co/xEMhIKW1G6
I have standing tables in my room and the kids love them It promotes a lot of needed movement.
Especially with big HS kids in a small room...
A1 I have avoided rows for years, set up my table groups by like ability, makes it easy to support struggling learners.
A1: We just changed the layout of our classroom from groups to pairs & the atmosphere changed. Our class is much more focused
and Learning Space can impact instruction
A1 I have heavy tables but I tend to move them around. Ss often confused if they come in and its changed. Better if they move!
Great ideas Q2 is coming up
Joe from St Joe, trying to chat tonight with kiddos racing around
Exactly! My big 8th graders in large classes struggle being comfy, and there's only so much I can do.
I have a yoga ball chair in my office. Couldn't sit still in typical chairs as a kid and haven't gotten any better as an adult.
YES! Would you??? https://t.co/7COliFpN2T
A1 it's like the saying, "Would you want to be a student in your class(room)?"
So who came up with these small chairs with desks attached? TO small for many students ...
A1: Flexible design important- change the design depending on lesson needs... circle for discussion, groups for collaboration, etc.
not always. I scrounged around my district until I found what I was looking for. :)
A1 Being creative with our tables allowed us to create a "court room" for a mock trial! A small space turned into a courthouse!
A1: redesigned my room this year after inspiration from and
I have always wondered that. Terrible design.
Q2: How do you incorporate students choice in your classroom design?
A1) Think of design as beyond classroom walls, extending learning to Ss lives, eg..design a walk home w phones to capture Learning
A1 would love to get rid of my tables but with so much writing in APUSH I kinda need my tables.
True.. I go a digging trust me... got moved to a room 1/2 the size this year: hard to be flexible now
A1: my Kindergarteners do most/all of their work on the rug..less room for relocation and flexibility
This is where many of us are at. How can we move beyond arranging chairs? https://t.co/68U8j8E2lG
A1.1: Aside from occasionally rearranging chair set-up, I struggle with finding ways to utilized new design ideas in band.
Purchased all of this with $5k grant. Write those grants. My room is so much more inviting. https://t.co/snVpawYZfq
A2 One way is to have a variety of spaces (grouped, individual, 1:1, teacher led) and let students chose their own adventure!
it is kind of funny, students in my building haven't had rows, they asked for rows once and loved it, for a bit.
do you like these desks? I had kidney shaped ones...the ocd in me wanted them to line up when grouped! ;-)
maybe something to do with budget? Perhaps they're cheaper to mass produce?
A1: my Ss move freely btw floor, desks, tables--this grows their understanding of their own needs as a learner = independence
A1: We have an area where we do community circle and this really builds relationships within the classroom https://t.co/8n692jCoWH
I've seen some creativity with lighting. Using free standing lights, fabric panels, loosen fluorescent bulbs.
Like thisidea of "mixing up the design"---not being stagnant and designing for the learning goals! https://t.co/uonzaAwQHP
A1 Being creative with our tables allowed us to create a "court room" for a mock trial! A small space turned into a courthouse!
Furniture size is key! We don't like sitting in chairs that are too big. Neither do they!
A2 Chromebooks allow me to set groups up in different locations in and outside of the class. I use the hall and commons area often
A1: I. Have students in pairs and. We go from there. The simple layout allows for group work and individual think time.
A2: Having Ss pick small groups every couple weeks to work with. They spread themselves around room to work on parts together.
. technology opening figurative and literal doors!
A2: Actually speaking on this at FlipCon in 2 weeks w/ . Come hear how Ss transformed a library into a awesome Media Center!
A1: importance of having place the students can take a breather/rest and return spot to monitor themselves and take time they need
A2 My Ss play a large role in what is displayed on our classroom walls. They have many spaces to choose from for independent work
flexible furniture promotes movement!
A2: Try & let Ss move to where they want, work in order they want (3 tasks, Ss choose order), but w/ 43 1 hr., hard to move tables.
A2 I have a variety of seating options and once directions are given Ss pick where they are most comfortable working
A2: Students can choose to move to quiet spaces in the room during work time and choose where they want to sit on the carpet
A2: It is good to offer different styles of seats to students: for comfort or different areas
A2 students choose partners with appointments, may sit where they choose, clipboards at the ready.
I started the year with my tables in pods, but my kids just didn't do well in that. Back to rows with 2 @ each table. I hate it.
A2 Pick seats for specific assignment, organize learning space with several areas of resources; they create visual aides
A2 - to incorporate S choice I created a room with choices for them, knew there would be multiple needs, tried to vary design
A2 Students have the opportunity to move around during silent reading whether it be to the front rug or the library space
A2: Flexible work space is huge for Ss choice- where do you want to read? Write?
LOVE LOVE the use of the word "tools!" https://t.co/9YIKJxiUX1
A1: Having other tools available to help Ss improves environment-exercise balls for bouncey Ss, walking space, etc, welcome everyone
A2: The room shouldn't be "finalized" on day 1. Observe and listen! Communicate with students about what's working and what's not
interesting idea! we have a student with an IEP who takes gets up frequently, so that would be beneficial!
I need more comfortable seating to lounge during reading...seriously.
A2: Allow Ss to move around the room to find a spot that allows for their best learning
I'd love to see a picture, if you have one CHOICE is key!
A2 I keep it real simple; name on a 3X5 card, front middle back of room & who will you be successful sitting near & not
. I really like them for that very reason, helps break linear thought process:) The kids like the width of the desk
A1 if kids can't choose where how if to sit you are not letting them learn to make real choices https://t.co/yvqmrFHuor
interesting idea! we have a student with an IEP who gets up frequently, so that would be beneficial!
Agreed!! Always on the hunt for cheap and comfy options to add to my library!
Many schools don't want added in-direct lighting which is better for learning due to hazards. yes many creative options
Staff meetings r held in my room. They love it. Clean look, almost professional. Schools seriously need to invest.
A2 Different seating choices - regular chairs, standing desks, floor cushions. Let them pick what works for them
Ok, I'll say it. Student behaviors can often dictate classroom design. True at any level.
Students said fluorescent lights gave them headaches, so my mentor teacher bought 10 floor lamps with soft light!
A2: In general music, I would propose maybe the students choose a shape they want to sit in for that day. Order by their choice.
A2: My students had a design challenge - redo the classroom the way you want it as a team. FUN & interesting!
I'll look. I just adjusted the legs on regular tables to be at standing height.
A2 I "try" to give students choice on where to work during independent time, not always successful.
Checking in a little late!
A2: Allow them to be the designers! It is amazing what they accomplish and what they learn from the process https://t.co/AoiGxW5fJk
Sadly, I agree. The group can have a lot of influence on what works and what doesn't. https://t.co/QYzen4dRGn
Ok, I'll say it. Student behaviors can often dictate classroom design. True at any level.
A2 - I treaded lightly with this one. Where and with whom where the primary choices, but avoidance behavior was a risk in HS math.
Loving that we are thinking about what works for us adults...and therefore what might work for our kids! https://t.co/VRgBqtn1C5
I have a yoga ball chair in my office. Couldn't sit still in typical chairs as a kid and haven't gotten any better as an adult.
Chat moving quickly! It's ok if you don't catch all of the comments. Respond to Qs & tweets as you're able. Will be archived later
My lights have the covers for softer glow. My kids love lights off during reading. I play classical. Makes me sleepy after lunch. :)
A2: Eek! Student choice? Never thought to incorporate that in seating. Choice = autonomy = brilliant!
That would be awesome, Not allowed in many schools due to "hazards" or cost of
for what age level? result? very interesting!
You can say that again. Sometimes, there are not enough corners to split them up! https://t.co/3h180i5mBw
Ok, I'll say it. Student behaviors can often dictate classroom design. True at any level.
we provide students will cushions that provide stimulation and help students concentrate. Plus, walking space really helps too!
A2: different seating arrangements for different types of interactions allows for versatility and mindset shift
A2 Students find zen music sooting and focusing so we play this quietly during Writers' Workshop
I hate the lights. I am convinced they cause migraines.
A1: When students have choice in seating, they are more engaged and can focus. My classroom space: https://t.co/v7xNhZeIqt
A2 Students have times during the day to pick groups and can sit anywhere in the room..tables, desks, or floor
I've been thinking of making all my tables standing tables. I have a lot of wiggles this yr.
A2: It's a shared space, so S input is helpful is the structure and flow of the community.
A2: We focus on meeting each student's particular needs. Therefore, standing desks, the floor, etc. are choices to meet these needs.
A1: Allow students to voice their ideas in which types of spaces they need in their classroom to do their best learning all day
Q3 is right around the corner. Great ideas
A2 after a while it gets from "I want to sit by my friend" to "I want to lay on the floor w/ a clipboard because it's comfortable"
Its hard with tough classes.
A2: Ss choice of where to sit is always brought to where do they need to be "as a learner." This gives them so much power
Do you change your room around during the year? I'm constantly changing it up...Invigorates kids and me.
Tried this with my Ss and they were back to tables after few weeks.
oh wow that's a great idea! Thinking about making the back tables standing height now
A2 I actually have about 5 spinning chairs... they drive me crazy but as long as I am not giving directions they can sit in them.
How cool to see that transition in their thinking!
My 6th grader is 6'3' and he does not fit in any desks at his school, really a problem
Using the design process with a relevant application like classroom space can help Ss think critically about their environment
Q3: How do you monitor “paying attention” when Ss are not sitting in rows facing forward?
A2 In regards to lighting, if floor lamps are out, draping roll paper or fabric over the florescent lights also dims the room!
True, Sometimes that can work. Sometimes not. Flexibility that can referenced to real job or profession enviros
I do not know how anyone keeps up with these chats and I am LOVING it! Rock on, educators!
A2 my colleague got rid of chairs several years ago, all his students sit on stability balls. Pretty cool alternative.
A2: Choice with moderation may be key for some- building groups based on strengths and problem avoidance may be necessary
I'm interested in experimenting band setup; letting them sit somewhere else might help part security and aural skills.
a2} my students are free to move about the room if they promise not to make fun of my leather Tweety jacket https://t.co/BAmWA7Wc0E
A3: Simple: MOVE around the room all class
it's even harder when options are limited in class design. Better options can help, but aren't usually a priority.
Reminds me of a senior I had years ago: 6'9", refused a table so as to not be different. :( https://t.co/lO8RT7jtN8
My 6th grader is 6'3' and he does not fit in any desks at his school, really a problem
A3: Move around. If kids are moving around we should be too!
A3 by rotating around the room and engaging in what they are doing...
A3 I never stop moving! LOL! :)
I've found the opposite to be true.. Often my expectations of a class dictate the behavior I get from them: MS and HS
A3 More interested in "being engaged" than "paying attention"
A3: I teach from many positions in the classroom: Front of the room is never an issue
A2: Persuasive writing piece on where and by whom the Ss think they should sit...must provide reasoning!
My kids would break them. I would love them, though!
A1: we provide students will cushions that provide stimulation and help students concentrate. Plus, walking space really helps too!
A3- how some kids show paying attention may look different than others. need to know how they focus best which requires knowing them
I'm always reminding kids to pick a spot where they can be successful. They need to be taught like anything else.
How do you know it's close to ? Because joins the convo! You've been missed https://t.co/Y7ldJN8mBN
a2} my students are free to move about the room if they promise not to make fun of my leather Tweety jacket https://t.co/BAmWA7Wc0E
A3: 1) You’ve created an engaging lesson 2) You are actively involved working alongside the students.
A3: I am a firm believer that more active and engaged the teacher is (around the room) the more enhanced the learning will be.
I agree! Change can be stimulating and it helps to re-energize. You also might find an even better setup than before!
A3 get out there with them. Don't guess from the pulpit, get out between the tables and desks and you'll KNOW
A3: It comes down to instructional practices. There should be a time when you are modeling they can be in desk. Its appropriate
Q3a does facing forward mean and looking attentive mean the student learn better?
A3 I also have a signal for when they need to turn and face me no matter where they are positioned in the room
A3 Lots of movement viewing and checking progress. Tech tools can enable real-time views into ss work. Results vs time on task
A3 I zoom around the room on a chair on wheels. It's fun for me and them.
A3 Having a signal, verbal /visual, which = stop what you're doing helps w/ directions. Monitoring by work completion/circulating
A3 Don't teach from the front. Walk around. Keep them on their toes. More Q&A throughout keeps engagement intact
I agree! I get my 10,000 steps in from circulation!
A1: A functional space w/ structure is helpful in the routine & comfort of Ss.
A2: My mentor teacher lets students choose their seats for the month until there's a problem. Usually there isn't & choice is great
A3: Ss sit on the rug during instruction. Ss are in learning positions and facing the speaker.
A3: Gotta move! Or have students move
A3 shining "laser" where the child is looking will remind them that they need to pay attention and more their eyes somewhere else
I agree with that, but a reality that teachers should keep in mind, but should also promote a chance to meet expectation
Of course Compliance and Obedience =s learning!
A3 if you have tech, use it for form assess during lessons, lots of options. & build relationships - they usually won't let u down!
A3: we work at “tracking the speaker” and showing them that you are actively listening. You have to teach the behavior you want.
Which is why tables and/or standing desks help, can be adjusted to fit any height
A3: When working in groups or in spaces around the room, you need to be MOVING! Proximity is key!
A3: I am all over. I walk around & constantly use my super-sonic Tch ears & eyes to keep Ss on track. W/ all 1:1 time!
Nxt yr I am taking on math, SS and sci and partner taking ELA. She wants to get rid of all desks and have couches. Sounds awesome.
A3 Mentor once said imagine you have paint on the bottom of your shoes; your prints should b all over the room by the end of the day
How do you have the Ss move in the classroom? Is there movement with work?
A3: Engagement has to do with content/instruction. If I'm having to constantly bring Ss back, that says something about my lesson
A3 - Be among the people. And no just passively. Interact with their group chit-chat (even if it's off-task).
Have you tried bed risers under your table legs?
A3: Move around and get to them!
A3 trying to investigate using tech to challenge attention. Like Padlet.
I don't want my Ss to ever accept the status quo without first evaluating its effectiveness starting with our shared learning space
Well I know admins look for those silent rooms with all students facing forward but MY ROOM is loud and active
A3: Move while teaching! This keeps students engaged and allows you to better monitor the room
A3: if students are at tables with some not facing forward, state "eyes and toes facing me" when attn. is needed at the front
A3 if I am whole group instructing, as I teach and walk around, I am able to easily see who is with me and who isn't. Proximity
A3: I think body language can give away a lot a student wouldn't admit to. Also along with my A1: proximity is key here imo.
It depends on the lesson, but we do station work, discussions with movement (pinwheels), gallery walks, jigsaws, etc
It took me a long time to stop feeling guilty that my classroom wasn't the quiet one.
A3 circulating while teaching is always the best way to see what is happening and keep children focused
The conversation around Q3 is focusing on teacher movement in the classroom. Important instruction strategy.
A3: I try to hold students acctble: I let Ss know that I will call on a random tbl, ask Ss to hold up a paper w/ response, etc...
Work moves with them sometimes, or they move to the work
A3: walking around monitoring and engaging in student work
Present complany excluded :) For me a quiet room is a unmotivated room. Buzz= engagement!
A3 during work time, you can hear who is on or off task....I like to hear a "productive buzz"
A3: Short end of class reflections or exit slips allow me to check to see if Ss were listening and comprehending during discussions
not all Admins...love the active learning and engagement.
It can be appropriate, but are they engaged? That is the true question.
Q3: circulation, monitoring, small conversation, and student-led discussion
A3: As for T movement, let's be careful to remember Ts with disabilities. No reason to discriminate there.
From the mouth of an admin- Thank you Matt! https://t.co/hZhpGrHyOV
Present complany excluded :) For me a quiet room is a unmotivated room. Buzz= engagement!
A3 Using more lessons that require viewing, reading, listening and writing. flexibility to finish later. < concerned with on task
A3: A limitation I've found can be my tech, which can limit my moves. Sometimes I feel stuck.
Yes, yes, yes. Tchs should be out & about with Ss while they are working, not standing "in front". https://t.co/eBfN3EsB8I
A3: When working in groups or in spaces around the room, you need to be MOVING! Proximity is key!
A3 - by moving around the room and knowing your Ss, get into the corners, get around the edges
A3 group work, I just listen...they are they ones responsible for monitoring their group.
real learning and engagement is loud and messy!
To recognize if students are "paying attention," we must also be engaged in the lesson. Circulate, ask questions, and learn!
If _I_ had to sit quiet for six hours, I would kill myself...seriously. (FSI meetings at the ISD are bad for my health.) :)
We've done a few round rehearsals. Sit by sections or mix it up. Can be fun way to hear new things for them and me!
this is a good reminder that classroom setup and seating arrangements should be developmentally appropriate
Nice! That's a great idea!
A3: I get on my 6th grader's level- sitting at their tables to engage in the work with them (while eyeing the rest of the class)
. I so wish teachers had more opportunity to shadow students for the day. It's tough!
With so many focus issues today, I need 20+ "front row" seats, ha!
A3: Easy to spot student engagement from afar. When the lesson is interesting Ss will be invested in learning.
I know: I was sort of joking Knowing the admin in DON"T want compliance and are focused on learning
A3 just got appleTV to project ipad on screen so I can write or Ss can write and project for all to see.
A3: Move around when teaching! That'll keep their attention!
an awesome way to get Ss excited about new content when introduce and set up in the proper way! https://t.co/3waCW642Hf
We do this as well! It's one of the many parts of that I love.
A3 need to move around and teach, sometimes being tethered to the front is a real drag.
there were cheers from students when they saw how much easier it was to navigate kids want sense of freedom w/ order
I think that would change the game. Overdue.
Amen! In one of my classes of 35, I have 12 who are supposed to sit next to the teacher and/or the front. Um...
Great point! Stupid wires. https://t.co/MDXGCUkBu1
A3: A limitation I've found can be my tech, which can limit my moves. Sometimes I feel stuck.
One of my goals was to get Ts to walk in my room and see the learning. Bring on the "noise"; there's work to be done 😁👍🏻🇪🇸
Sad news, my principal says I can't go to this year. BUT joke's on him I will hide in his luggage! https://t.co/QPt0EB9tUl
How do you know it's close to ? Because joins the convo! You've been missed https://t.co/Y7ldJN8mBN
a2} my students are free to move about the room if they promise not to make fun of my leather Tweety jacket https://t.co/BAmWA7Wc0E
A3: My mentor teacher told me to put my purse in my chair to make sure I never sit down
In my job, a quiet library is not a good thing!
Couches will work for some kids and some tasks...may put some to sleep! May need a mix of options https://t.co/ASTyeGfdcP
Nxt yr I am taking on math, SS and sci and partner taking ELA. She wants to get rid of all desks and have couches. Sounds awesome.
Is technology set-up tethering us to "front" of class? How do we work around the tech location? https://t.co/5eDpRRcq2Z
A3 need to move around and teach, sometimes being tethered to the front is a real drag.
. Pretty simple on the Danielson rubric, teacher is center of class (no buzz of Ss) u can't be High Eff
Q4: How do you get buy-in from (colleagues)(admin)(parent) when you want to try alternative seating?
A3: Did a group quiz today, Ss up and moving from table to table to discuss questions and argue answers. Lots of movement and noise!
Great question! https://t.co/j3g2MT4moj
Q4: How do you get buy-in from (colleagues)(admin)(parent) when you want to try alternative seating?
When I got and could walk around the room while still controlling tech my life was CHANGED.
If lesson is engaging enough, I don't need to worry about looking forward & straight rows. Disengaged means need to evaluate lessons
Why I dislike SMART boards, that are not used properly. https://t.co/ABZWC6JZzh
Is technology set-up tethering us to "front" of class? How do we work around the tech location? https://t.co/5eDpRRcq2Z
A3 need to move around and teach, sometimes being tethered to the front is a real drag.
. could add interest to a conversation on learning spaces
my son uses it in his K class and now we do at home too :) movement is hard to get during winter months
A4: Hold my department meetings in my room. Ts loved the change. Trying new things themselves.
mobile devices have really stepped up their game here. my CT does everything off his iPad. seemlessly.
We used last week. We've had some great rehearsals, but never that kind of excitement from Ss until we did that.
. I love walking by your room and there is a learning FIESTA going on!
I'm going to do some rearranging of my classroom! Thanks ! Also, love the use of lamps in your setup.
using new programs to cast a tablet screen onto the projector-- carry the tablet all around the room!
. YES!!!!!!!! Would rather buy several of some other technology than one supposedly smart board!
Chat tip: Easier to manage a fast moving chat with a Twitter app - Try or
not to mention even Bluetooth connections can be your ally here.
I did this too! It makes a big difference when you're piloting new tech too.
If we have the stuff for it. I would love it!
Don't you love the looks on their faces when the favs come on??? :)
A4 Let the Ss voices be heard! They love having more choice in the classroom - have them help convince others
. We have one in our office. It really is awesome!
For me it's simple. Share your purpose & vision and have students at the center of your thinking.
dance parties were our go to with the first graders I worked with last year! I had just as much fun as them :)
A4 Have them come in and experience it:) Convince your admin to invest in flexible furnishings;)
A4: Again, let the Ss be behind the process. We got over $64 in donations b/c students asked for it!
A4: if something is not working there needs to be a change, allow them to put themselves in the minds of the students
A3: Circulate around the room to confer with Ss. I sit next to where they are. I meet with groups where I can have a global view.
We had these desks for our week at the Michigan Historical Museum (Big History). I love and hate them at the same time.
A4: Share the benefits, show how it might help students: Start small see benefits then grows
Are they? That makes me happy! I have been eyeing these for a few years!
A4 have them sit for six hours in those uncomfortable seats....
A4: Buy-in comes from a shared trust & understanding for what's best for Ss. Sometimes Ts just have to try new things & accommodate.
A4: be honest and upfront with what you want to do. Change is hard, but I think it's important and necessary here.
Tell me! What didn't you like?
I really like using for just that purpose! https://t.co/mb4B5mJe1p
using new programs to cast a tablet screen onto the projector-- carry the tablet all around the room!
Oh Man!!! MATH DANCE PARTY! I have a great Slope dance!
we have those in college and suprsinginly even college students manage to flip and fall out of them
too simple Ben. Isn't it supposed to be complicated? Always comes back to Ss at the center
Who wants to work with ??? Answer= THIS girl! https://t.co/ocI4A3znJF
For me it's simple. Share your purpose & vision and have students at the center of your thinking.
A4 if students can articulate why your setup works, and their work reflects that, I'm sold!
A4 parent training, call them, explain benefits, we actually had parents donate Hokki stools
in ref to "mvng round room"- does anyone use multiple whitebrds? jw
A collaborative learning prof taught me something I post on my door."Only plants grow silently. Please excuse our productive buzz."
A4: I hope for flexibility- let the Ts know we're in halls for group work, or office know we're outside for write-a-thons
A4: Again, let the Ss be behind the process. We got over $64K in donations b/c students asked for it! https://t.co/XViCsFzerH
not to mention even Bluetooth connections can be your ally here. https://t.co/JQFOREDWNP
why does the female body aaaalways have to be sexualizef
oh yes!!! Currently obsessed with Peanut Butter in a Cup!
Ha, kids are always falling out of the slippery suckers I purchased. Ugh.
A3: When moving around, I like to engage them in conversations about the content. Engagement can be active!
Okay, let's try this again sans children. What question are we on ?
A4: Ask them to try it! They'll see it's even difficult for adults to sit in the same desk chair facing forward for extended time
he is pretty awesome. AND, extra credit for being on the team. :)
A4: Ask the parents to consider the seating in their home and work? Understanding through empathy.
student voice is very convincing for admins!
Even just a few of these and a few standing desks in a classroom would open up possibilities
If you have a school-based OT, he/she may be able to help with buy in
I freaking wish! LOL https://t.co/jRfcaMOp7x
Ha, just noticed your last name....sorry if any relation to the boards ;-)
A4 parents love to come in to observe. I think this is best for them to see what goes on in the classroom and how their students act
A4 - I never did. I tried to meet daily with a bigger class in the (rarely-used) media center. "You can't do that. You just can't."
anyone have a curriculum adoption process you like? Willing to share? Pilots, criteria, etc?
I personally would have covered my room floor to ceiling in whiteboards. :) AND given each of my Ss a small one.
A4: As long as S learning, successful classroom culture the goal will be open to new ideas.
Q4: How do you get buy-in from (colleagues)(admin)(parent) when you want to try alternative seating?
BTW, I get to pick out furniture for my room next year. Any suggestions?
Agreed! https://t.co/kxAyuKKriQ
A4: Buy-in comes from a shared trust & understanding for what's best for Ss. Sometimes Ts just have to try new things & accommodate.
BEANBAGS ALL GIANT BEANBAGS!!!
A4 I pity the teacher who has admin/parents that take issue with classroom arrangements!
A3: Students need to be near the point of instruction. Where exactly is that? EVERYWHERE
A4 put parents in their shoes, have them come in and see the classroom and see how the students are learning best
A4: technology CAN "tether" us, but there are ways to work around it! invest in wireless presentation remotes, and keep moving !
So true! That is not a battle Tchs should have to face! https://t.co/UrEWhr88dI
A4 I pity the teacher who has admin/parents that take issue with classroom arrangements!
Exactly- no front of the room! https://t.co/fo0aadDWmZ
A3: Students need to be near the point of instruction. Where exactly is that? EVERYWHERE
A rug with distinct spaces on it so you can assign seats if necessary
A4: This have parents engage with learning community in the same way Ss do!
When I was in the library I always told the kids I didn't "shush", because I would have to start with me!
. OT's ( and PT) love to help with different seating options..
A4: It's a two way street- remember to support our colleagues when they try new approaches, too. Ask questions, try to understand
A4 I bet parents would be on board to help make the shift, but you have to have a plan.
see if you can get samples from different companies. you will be surprised on what they will give you
That's if we have money or time to write grants...
A4: I find if I'm thoughtful about why I want to change the room and communicate, there isn't a lot of push-back from parents/admin
gonna try using my bckboard! exclnt idea! thanks
Love me some Cat Party! Even with the creepy cat-person :)
A4: It should be an ongoing conversation with all parties. It is important to share successes and challenges in order to improve!
I was lucky to spend 13 years in the library. Building spaces for collaboration, relaxation, making.....
I should have been more specific. I teach middle school.
a4} seeing the positive results themselves is huge. I also bribe them with churros if I need to.
. Honestly, I can't fathom how some1 cld get feathers ruffled if students r not in rows! Find something else 2 worry over!
A4: involve the kids AND parents in the design. Ask them to send in furniture/decor from home
“: Who wants to work with ??? Answer= THIS girl! https://t.co/jVKy9peZZi ” Can I x1000?!?
For me it's simple. Share your purpose & vision and have students at the center of your thinking.
Buy a roll of non-stick shelf liner and cut out squares the size of the seats...kids will NOT slide out! https://t.co/rlnih8Flrn
Ha, kids are always falling out of the slippery suckers I purchased. Ugh.
My sister(teacher) got rid of her desk because she no longer used it. I'm almost there.
It happens all too often. For some, that's the sign that it's a serious classroom. I know, I know...
We tired during bond. They said “why give them furniture they can sleep in” :(
Q5: What are your best tips for finding resources to support alternative classroom design and student movement?
Amy, critical to understand that parents come with history. It's important to listen & understand. Then share benefits.
If Prnts ever wonder, best thing to do is invite them in & let them see how amazing your room is, how well Ss work!
When the kids start grading for me, I'm in.
Join Monday, 8:30pm to discuss how to use phenomenon in NGSS instruction!
A4:partnering with families and your community is essential to the success of your classroom and kids I believe
Join Monday, 8:30pm to discuss how to use phenomenon in NGSS instruction!
I bought a couch and loveseat on . The HS Ss would go to GREAT lengths to be the group to sit on them.
Many companies will lend you samples for a few weeks.
That's the answer to almost any parent complaint: "Come learn with us" It changes everything.
I'd love to hear how you partner!
collaborate with other teachers and see what they're doing thats working for them and try it!
shelf liners are very versatile! Unfortunately, the desk itself often flips if kids try to roll around!
A5: Actually seeing other classrooms. It's one thing to learn about different options, another thing to see things in real life
A5 PINTEREST PINTEREST PINTEREST
A5: I've rcvd several grants totalling over $20k in just two years. Write the grants. I spend a week at it after school lets out.
A5: Saw at blog and of course!
A5: walk the halls of other schools. Pinterest has some good ones too.
A5 collaborate with other teachers and see what they're doing thats working for them and try it!
A5 Curiosity, the Interweb, and the courage to implement what you learn
A5) For the funding piece, DonorsChoose, GetEDFunding or going to TheBigDeal Book and searching for grants is a good option.
A5 It never hurts to ask everyone you know! Worse they can do is say no
A5: Make a decision to change the way you teach. New desks won't increase student engagement for you.
Yes, unfortunately there will always be that kind of pushback - expectation of school to look and feel like school.
A5: Communicate with other educators, like we're doing now. Often times the best resource is the teacher in the room next door :)
the DESK flips??? Yikes! Ask your for help problem solving that one!
has mini grants ($1500) that would work well for this purpose if technology is involved
I join local FB groups (DeWitt Rummage Sale & Freecycling) Teachers are treated well there
AMEN CO brother! https://t.co/075CjWmb7x
A5: Make a decision to change the way you teach. New desks won't increase student engagement for you.
A5 PTO, parents, admin....it goes back to HAVE A PLAN.
Thanks for that referral :)
(Singing to choir) We need investment in schools. Classrooms shouldn't look like they did 50 yrs ago. Ridonkulous.
It's one of a 3-part article written by a Pediatric OT. Really insiteful and will support changing the classroom tools!
A5: Other teachers are the best resource-as we can see from this session! Share and compare ideas! You never know what you'll find!
A5: I have learned so much from taking the time to visit as many classrooms in a variety of schools as I can!
A5: Experiments in math class! Raiding my science colleagues classrooms was huge for my math classes.
A1-5 A great teacher w/ amazing classroom seating, Ss buy through their classroom economy. Hard work & responsiblity = cozy butt
A5: Follow participants. Greatest resources is a well-built . I'm going to have several people to follow after tonight
Right on! New furniture won't fix things if Tch still "teaches to rows". Teaching, learning need to change! https://t.co/N86h44xwj7
A5: Make a decision to change the way you teach. New desks won't increase student engagement for you.
A5: Local organizations are a great place to go for grants.
I conduct home visits to my students' families as well as parent awareness day where they get to come observe the class
A5: work with other teachers in the school (same and different grade levels)
thanks for the chat! Good night!
Sorry …just being able to check in right now for the tail end of the chat! Looks like you are sharing great resources!
Use classroom space to empower Ss and leverage learning, but don't expect disengaging teaching to be fixed with classroom changes
Educators would benefit from visiting other schools and classrooms. Seeing learning spaces in person can be powerful.
A5: When I went to buy stuff from people on and they heard I was a T using it for my room, they gave it for free! <3
I have parents send in fans and exercise balls --> kids can take them home when we're done w/ them. No storage issues!
So important! How can we make sure this happens ? https://t.co/BFL2ZO0iFk
Educators would benefit from visiting other schools and classrooms. Seeing learning spaces in person can be powerful.
I had some of those in my 3rd grade class. Did you get them at 5 Below? The kids loved them.
Did he get into a fight with a desk?
a5} i get ideas from people's blogs and sometimes IKEA (when they unban me from the store. how do i know if i want a bed w/o trying?
Q6: Since kids NEED movement, what is the impact on learning when we use inactivity as a consequence?
Can 5th graders fit in them??
ON NO! There are ways to avoid this, sand in the bottom of the ball, a flipped frisbee as a base, ball chair bases
Very thankful that promotes cross-county collaboration and opens doors.
He's not as good at Physics as daddy! Head straight to the corner of the table. No concussion, thank goodness!
A6 inactivity = less learning actually taking place...they need a break!
a very small 5th graders. They are pretty tiny.
Admin in - let's connect schools! :)
need to use power of tech to share classroom tours. Would love to see innovative uses of space!
SO happy you're here, Rebecca!
A6: Oh gosh, I feel like all you're doing is punishing yourself if you do that. And it can't be good for learning either. :)
be aware these have a 50# weight limit, but are GREAT for young classrooms! Linear rocking is very calming!
A6 negative feelings toward school.
A6 We should never take away students freedom to move
This looks amazing. What a great way to create an inviting environment for your students. Definitely inspires me!
A6: Consequences of lack of engagement and too much energy = discipline problems. Plan and simple.
A6: Taking away movement opportunities is unproductive...leads to lack of focus and affects the way students feel in the classroom
I used them with 3rd, and I thought they were pretty maxed out for them.
Stacey, that would be a great thing to tweet out. Safety with yoga balls. Don't want the kiddos injured
A6- Uhh, you better plan on reteaching that concept the next day.
yes! They are small. They are in a kinder room.
A6: movement and learning become distant in Ss minds, and movement takes the fun role while learning is the chore
Gotta scoot Thanks for a great chat. Lots of great ideas and reminders!
A6: Using inactivity as a consequence hinders the ability to succeed in the following lessons/activities, creating a vicious cycle.
welcome to ! Great to have you!
She's brilliant this one...makes collaboration a JOY! https://t.co/R3bVfB9c6t
I have parents send in fans and exercise balls --> kids can take them home when we're done w/ them. No storage issues!
maybe they got mad because i was wearing adult footie pajamas and a stocking cap
A6 Too much to say in 140 characters on this one! Such a backwards idea...inactivity as a consequence for overactivity...
A6: It can change the environment a lot, and in a negative way
Make sure you get the right size exercise balls too. 90 degree angles w/ the knees
. I just took some Ts to Kent Innov High to see the paradise of PBL and active learning spaces!
A6: Students need breaks and movement. When Ss become antsy, it is time to move on to something else. Know how to read your Ss
A6: These kids are the one that need the movement to keep them out of trouble.
A6 Find a new consequence. One that relates to the problem.
i checked but they have plexiglass over the bowls, like they don't trust us or something.
A6 it is so tough, often Ss earn this consequence because they couldn't handle the freedom to move, but the need to move. Erggh!
A6: Past student said he noticed he did not tap pencil as much when he had a swivel or rocking stool. The tapping drove me nuts!
A6: engage Ss by relating content to everyday lives and keeping their brain busy instead of bodies by enabling Ss as thinkers
If you want to visit Warner we'd love to share. Come see & more.
A6 Just makes the problem worse. Ts need to not be offended if Ss aren't engaged, might reflect more on teaching style than students
If I got in one it would be stuck to my butt for good:)
A6 students NEED breaks to make learning more productive
Q7: What is one thing you can try tomorrow that will involve whole body learning?
I'll be there too! Leading a convo on blended learning on Sat. Make sure you say HI!
Becky from Port Huron Schools- I teach ASL as a world language. I'm a first timer; bear with me!
A6: Movement, learning share similar fabrics. Inactivity as a consequence seem a stretch to change behavior.
A6 several years ago I had a Ss who was swiveling excessively during an NWEA test, best score she ever got. Gotta move, find a way.
A5: talk with and observe colleagues! get creative to fit your students' needs!
I've gotta run. Great chat tonight! So many ideas and wonderful reminders! thanks
A4: Try being shorter than most of my students when I teach without my voice. Line of sight is priority 1 in my room
A7: Tomorrow, I will do at least one GoNoodle brain break between two subjects for my second graders
A6: inactivity as punishment is illogical and creates bigger problems in the long run. Not worth it.
It makes me smile to know trusted this student to make her own choices about fidgeting https://t.co/ctR0gjERdH
A6 several years ago I had a Ss who was swiveling excessively during an NWEA test, best score she ever got. Gotta move, find a way.
Reply with "A6" and response. Don't forget to include hashtag !
A6: Not a big believer in physical fitness as punishment. In PE Ss should enjoy movement, not used to modify a negative behavior.
I found so many great Soc. St. parodies…my favorite was one to the tune of Blurred Lines. Dancing and SS= Fun!
The convos are much easier to plan for than traditional conferences and much more fun!
Conjugation Chaos with Verbs in Spanish... Sounds like a real trip. Bring. It. On. 😁👍🇪🇸
A7: Having a task that allows for student movement is helpful. We're making our own math art and designing a mini golf course.
A7 incorporate movement into a lesson and brain breaks
Feeling inspired by the conversation tonight! Re-energized and ready for tomorrow
A7: Examine ways to allow students to move more, and have options in my room
Great chat tonight! I have to go a little early see you next week!
A7 Brain breaks and dance parties are always a go to
A7: be a model of good fitness and play with Ss! We can use the break as well :)
A7: Tomorrow (and everyday) I will laugh and move with my students, showing my own enthusiasm/excitement for learning
A7: Make tomorrow's discussions mobile, give space to move
A6: Try some yoga with them. can give you some pointers.
May have to get creative with virtual visits for more access. Release time, subs, etc can be barriers
https://t.co/c0zXKrwjwS
FINAL SCORE: The Spartans (17-4 overall, 8-2 in the Big Ten) defeated the Wolverines (12-10 record, 4-7 B1G) by a final score of 85-64.
will tell you that removing recess for a child who can't sit still is counterproductive. Kids need to move for brain devel
So ready to tackle tomorrow! Very insightful conversation
Inactivity hurts learning/engagement. Research says people begin to lose focus on average at the 10 min mark.
for secondary Ts might mean taking own initiative during planning time-go visit colleagues in action!
A7: Band is whole body but can still become routine. Need to be more purposeful in finding ways to reset room and get them moving.
What a wonderful and inspiring conversation tonight about movement in the classroom! Thank you, !
hooray for your Twitter account and for participating in a chat! 😊
Has anyone tried exercising with your kids as a transition? AWESOME results!
Q7) Dance Parties, Brain Breaks, Choice in seating and change it up often, Kids design space, research items needed, write grant
I knew a T who started EVERY one of her HS ELA classes with 7-10 min of this!
A7: Musical chairs. 90 min block is way to long... Break 1/2 in but now will consider changing seats/perspective/neighbor.
Ben is 10 min mark for adults? Kids?
Suggestions for secondary? They already don't get recess. How can we encourage movement?
Opps this was suppose to be A7:
Try some yoga with them. can give you some pointers.
A7 stay positive and move around with my students. I'm going to try to let them sit on their desks...😱
A7: Silly, but if my Ss were in a bad mood, I let/asked them stand up on their desk. I said I was testing a hypothesis.
Good reminders for me to implement the 8-2 method again. Thank you, everyone!
I used to do core building exer. for one trans. a day. Planks were a fav. and it gave us a chance to learn to count in other lang.
This keeps me excited and engaged about learning, too! Plus it puts a smile on the Ss faces.
Transitions between classes, allowing fidgets, teaching fidgeting is normal, chew gum!
Peace out dogs... I'll be a this weekend. Make sure you say hi peeps!
All. People need to move. Trying to incorporate into all things I do.
Oops this was suppose to be A7:
Try some yoga with them. can give you some pointers.
More movement breaks between lessons. Thanks for the great chat tonight! Lots to reflect on.
There have been awesome ideas tonight! Thanks
a7} Right foot lets stomp

A7: I am starting a meditation club that includes walking meditation and yoga!
A7: Consider potential changes in classroom flow that might encourage or influence more student whole body learning.
A7 We need more dance breaks in class - had so much fun w/ my daughter dancing tonight, why not let school be that much fun!
Project spaces/group activity DURING class, time btwn classes allows for movement at older grades
A7: In secondary, I prefer if the movement were part of the plan rather than a break from what we are doing.
I have taught students a dance/song for students to learn the water cycle. They love it & are truly learning in the process!
A3a: I have my room set up in a horse shoe type half circle so that the whole class discussion can be better facilitated.
This was an interesting article...Stand-up desks may improve students’ brain function, study finds https://t.co/72o7iHt8NQ
A7: I seriously found that putting on some fun tunes and letting them sing/dance while working helped and enhanced the climate too.
The content needs to be engaging and fun and promote movement... not just be endured until the next break.
Chewing gum is an EBP! Peppermint=greater retention, spearmint=relaxation! No lie!
