As everyone knows bridges figuratively and literally are huge enablers of civil society; and in the US as I'm sure in many other countries there are critical infrastructure issues with aging bridges #iteachphysics

So before we get going today, let's do an #iteachphysics roll call. Please tell us where you teach physics, what level of students. And comment on the conditions of road bridges that you use most often.

I use a bridge in @ArlingtonVA over I-66 that has gaps in road bed through which I can see the freeway below. I wonder about the steel skeleton. @VaDOTNOVA#iteachphysics.
#iteachphysics Q1: Have you included model bridge building in your physics lesson plans? What did you do specifically, and what were you learning objectives?

#iteachphysics A1: I have not done so thus far but with the increased level of #STEAMed in my curriculum, this is going to feature more often from this point on. #STEM#STEAM#STEMed
I know that's right! I went back to @UMich a few years ago and State Street, the main street of the university, looked horrible. It has to be somebody's job to make the front stoop of the university, where @umichLSA is, look better than that. #iteachphysics
In intro physics we definitely get to the first two. We may get to the third. But I'm not sure anyone gets to the last two force orientations. #iteachphysics

Calculating forces on bridges is also a good numerical linear algebra exercise is in complicated bridge structures the equations come down to Ax=b. You can find such problem in any engineering statics book.

#iteachphysics A2: I do cover these various tensile forces but in a general context. It will definitely be cool for me to tie them to bridges and the kind of forces they are subject to.

#iteachphysics Is this the result of linearization or do some of the relationships end up being linear naturally? You would think with complex systems that most bridges are, things would be a bit too sophisticated to be simply linear. #STEAM#STEAMed#STEM#STEMed#Engineering
But this gets to an important Q re this topic, how far do we go in the #physics before we are teaching #engineering, or is this not something we should think about? #iteachphysics
