#LearnLAP occurs on Mondays starting at 7pm Central Time. Guest moderators and participants discuss topics from author Paul Solarz's book Learn Like a PIRATE.
Roman from Ontario, Canada. HS Teacher/Student Success Leader/Agent of Transformation. Great to be with #LearnLAP to talk about Igniting Student Agency. Let's rock this Monday night!
Happy #MLKday! We look forward to a great chat tonight about empowering students to own their learning and become builders of a more just world! #LearnLAP
Join our team for an inspiring #MLKDay Twitter chat on igniting student agency! Starting NOW!!! The thread is on #LearnLAP (for learn like a pirate - so good!)
I'm Colin Gilbert, former 11th grade social justice/ethics teacher and service learning director in Palm Desert, CA. Now with @sowntogrow in Oakland. Thank you all for joining us tonight! #LearnLAP
Paul Solarz, 5th grade teacher from Arlington Heights, Illinois and author of #LearnLAP - excited about tonight's chat! Thanks to @cgilbs & @rupa_c_g for moderating tonight!!!
Hi everyone! I'm excited to co-moderate today on igniting #studentagency! I'm a former admin from San Jose Unified in CA. Recently founded @sowntogrow to help tackle student agency! Excited to learn together today :) #learnlap
#Learnlap Greetings from chilly Grand Forks, ND. I am Jessie Erickson, a Curriculum Technology Partner working with students and teachers daily. I have taught many grade levels and love my friend @PaulSolarz's book!
A1: Options Options Options and agreements. I think we give them the options and expectations and they will surprise us with their ownership. #learnLAP
A1: Allowing for choice within the classroom - ranging from flexible seating to the way Ss are required to display their knowledge. Choice is essential in ownership. #LearnLAP
A1: Giving kids a choice about what questions to answer on HW, what tests ought to look like, and what technological apps they want to use in class. #learnlap
A1: Moving my class to a flipped environment. Using standards based grading. Allow retakes to show that there is no deadline in learning. #learnlap#flipclass#flippedlearning. #SBG
A1: I am really trying to have my students make evaluations and try to come up with their own personal solutions to the problem at hand. I try to give them choice within the learning. #learnlap
A1: Providing choice and an opportunity to produce projects in various formats helps Ss to have ownership and see greater value in their work #LearnLAP
A1: Student-Led Conferences, Student Goal Setting, Ss leading as many parts of the learning as possible throughout the day, class meetings. Ss love when they feel that they have a voice. #LearnLAP
A1: For me I would say moving more toward PBAs over traditional tests whenever possible. Students have to develop their own projects where there are many right answers and you can't just fill in a bubble on a scantron! #learnlap@ERobbPrincipal@KGT_Educator@ToddRisser
A1 As educators, we first need to relinquish & share some control. We need to have a platform for them to share their voice, give them choice. We need to listen. We must know their story. If you build engagement, they will naturally take more ownership. Believe in them. #LearnLAP
A1: at the start of each year I take an inventory of which ways my students feel they learn the best. I then use that inventory to create different avenues “assessments” for my students to demonstrate their understanding #LearnLAP
A1 Choice is my first go to when looking to engage and pull students in. If they feel like they can make a choice to meet their needs, they will feel more like the work is worth it #LearnLAP
A1: Student-centered Inquiry for sure! It is such a challenge to honor this practice in upper grades- but it’s the only way I stay sane #testingmakesmecrazy#LearnLAP
A1: Empowering students to be able to articulate what they already know and can do and what they need to learn what they don't know and can not do. If they can advocate for their learning, they hold all the power. #Learnlap
A1: Following the student’s lead, giving them decision making power in how to complete work, and allowing them to share in some form of medium #LearnLAP
Hey #LearnLAP! Louie from Lancaster, PA stopping in for a little tonight. Middle School Social Studies Teacher. First time joining this chat! Excited to learn from you all. :)
A1: I have to say #EdTech, but I don’t mean we just substitute it to have students type papers. We have been implementing more opportunities for students to explore and control their learning opportunities by giving them choices on how they learn. #learnLAP
Reading and writing workshop where student choice is essential. Choice in all areas is important. Choosing how to learn and show their learning. Setting their own goals. #learnlap
A1:
The protocol that has worked best for me is modeling he learn and getting in the thick of it with the Ss. They love when I create alongside of them. #LearnLAP
We're talking about student ownership in my EDU class and we're all discussing how when student's feel they can voice their opinions they learn better. This can be by sharing what they find most interesting, options on a test or project, etc.
#LearnLAP
A1 I also make a promise to my students that I will never ever make them do "busy work". If I assign it, I think it has value for their learning. #LearnLAP
A1 The one thing NOT to do is assume that students know how to take ownership. They need concrete modeling; what does "choice" mean w/in the assessment and give time for Ss to ask questions and repeat directions/expectations in their own words #learnlap
A1. I've provided choices when assessing this year. Has shown great increase in overall engagement. Provide a CYOA (Choose Your Own Assessment) Menu at the end of each unit of study. Ss show their learning in a way they think is best. #LearnLAP
#learnlap A1:Since I'm a preservice teacher I'll go based on experience w/ my own kids (8th,5th,3rd).They like having options for HW assignmnts (tic tac toe grid) & especially for projects. My 8th grader loves to write whereas my 5th grader likes making visual representations
A1: I "just" started independent learning plans with each student. I have tip toed and walked out 3 previous times but I am ALL in this time! So far, listening to the Ss own what they know and dont has been amazing!! #learnlap
A1: Starting off with constructive choice (meaning giving a few options) and not penalizing them with grades, but instead promoting mastery through feedback sessions. #learnlap
It is, but TBF a lot of Ss will just default to the multiple choice option, either because it is what they are used to or b/c they think they can game the system. Disappointing, but there it is. #LearnLAP
A1: In PreK it's vastly different from the older grades. Much of what Ss show me is through my questioning during play. Qs I ask are "How do you know?" or Show me how you figured that out." It helps me understand their learning and how best to teach to their individualities.
A1 I would define agency as students choosing to make school meaningful by connecting their learning, work, and relationships to their own values. Here’s one way to do that. #learnLAP
A1: using rotation to take ownership of their learning . Asking students a question , putting them in groups and they work together to find the answer . Once we are done , each group shares out #learnlap
A1: Providing students with choices and allowing students to be creative in the process of demonstrating their understanding. Teaching students to set goals and self-monitor. #learnlap
A1. Allowing Ss choices in their learning opportunities, giving them multiple chances to led the way and take ownership of discussions, flexible seating, Ss helping one another. #learnlap
A1) Ask them! Ask them on how they would like to meet the objective. Ask them on best ways they would like to work, where they want to work and how. Learn active and learner informed classroom #LearnLaphttps://t.co/7qr1ypDMj1
A1: Options Options Options and agreements. I think we give them the options and expectations and they will surprise us with their ownership. #learnLAP
So important, I am new to this journey and so are my kids. It is like those beautiful puppies that grew up in a lab. At first they are scared of the grass...then they love it and run like something is chasing them lol #learnLAP
A1 The one thing NOT to do is assume that students know how to take ownership. They need concrete modeling; what does "choice" mean w/in the assessment and give time for Ss to ask questions and repeat directions/expectations in their own words #learnlap
Within some boundaries. We use Google Classroom, no option there, but I asked my Ss if they wanted to try FlipGrid. 2 classes said NO WAY, one was undecided, and a fourth wanted to experiment with it. #learnlap
A1: make sure students understand the purpose of the learning and understand they are in charge of their own learning, learning doesn't just happen to them #learnlap
A1) Ask them! Ask them on how they would like to meet the objective. Ask them on best ways they would like to work, where they want to work and how. Learn active and learner informed classroom #LearnLaphttps://t.co/7qr1ypDMj1
A1: Anchor charts, checklists, rubrics all given at the beginning of a project as they navigate at their own pace yet held accountable to expectations. #LearnLAP
A2 That mistakes are natural. Mistakes means that you are learning. I want them to know that I believe in them and that their hard work is what I appreciate and value them for. #LearnLAP
A1: creating choice through project based and empowering the students to create an agreed upon rubric. They own the mastery of their learning and what mastery is to be defined as.
#LearnLAP
Students need to always believe “I can do it!” They cannot be defeated by a bad grade or making mistakes. We must help students see the learning that can arise from a mistake #LearnLAP
A2. Ss need to know they are capable of building, unlocking, creating, and breaking the mold... not just meeting a standard or getting a grade #LearnLAP
A2: That they CAN be successful, and that what they are learning IS important. We have a lot of control in both those areas -- busy work is a turn off and so is not having a relationship with Ss. #learnlap
I have been playing around with Flipgrid and Google Slides to encourage collaboration. I also will be doing a Formative with my kids next week. #LearnLAP
A2: "I have the opportunity to change the world, and by advocating for myself and knowing that my teacher wants to help me get there I can get there!" #learnlap
It's great! Three parts. Zoomed in super close... What do you see? What do you think the greater picture is? Zoom out. Same questions + how has your thinking changed. Finally, whole picture. Repeat questions. #LearnLAP
Q2: So very important, and showing kids you are invested in them, what they say and do is meaningful, that they are respected, and forming a relationship; critical!! #LearnLAP
A2 That they are kind, worthy, empathetic learners. That they are capable of anything. That learning can be done at their rhythm and that they are not compared to anyone. That is is okay to be a learner and make mistakes & we will honor their learning journey. #LearnLAP
A2- That they can learn, improve, and are good people. That they will fail and face adversity in school and life. How they deal with that adversity will determine their success. That we are in their corner here to guide them #learnlap
A2: Agreed! Ss have to feel that they can achieve anything w/ belief and effective effort. It is essential that Ss learn how to be successful. Awesome TED Talk that I used within my mindset teaching this year on learning versus performance zones. https://t.co/k48oOo6yOv#learnlap
A2: That they MATTER!!
If our Ss know that who they are matters to us and to the 🌎, they’d feel empowered and encourage to learn MORE - BE MORE #learnlap
A2.2 - Ss also need to know the difference between fail-ing and fail-ure. Fail-ing is temporary and part of the learning process; fail-ure is permanent and a fixed mindset. #learnlap
A2: When Ss start to see failure and assessments as opportunities to learn instead of punitive pathways, that can go a long way. But, Ts have to model, promote, and live these beliefs consistently for it to filter to Ss. #learnlap
A1 Creating a classroom culture of student responsibility...jobs, helping others, being empathetic. Explaining what it means to be responsible for your learning & growing from failure. Allowing Ss choice in how they show their learning #LearnLAP
They hold the cards and we need to be their Wild Card and support them. We need to bring the magic and adventure to them, give them the journey they deserve! @hopekingteach@WadeKing7#LearnLAP
In reply to
@Mr_TubbsSS, @hopekingteach, @WadeKing7
I used active learning strategies for years, but giving Ss the ability to chose their path to an outcome has given a whole new meaning to the strategy. #learnlap
A2. Ss should know that their gift and talents are valued. They need to know that their gifts can help them be successful. We need to add to these skills by what we are doing/producing in the classroom. #LearnLAP
A2 No one can shut off self-judgment; it’s part of being human. What they (and we!) can learn to do is notice those self-judgments, treat themselves with compassion, and continue to do meaningful work. #LearnLAP
They hold the cards and we need to be their Wild Card and support them. We need to bring the magic and adventure to them, give them the journey they deserve! @hopekingteach@WadeKing7#LearnLAP

A1 maker work, choice in PBL, student led conferencing, co-developed S-T curriculum, student help desks “how can you set up kids to do everything in schls they can own?” #LearnLAP
A2: They ARE readers, writers, thinkers, speakers, listeners, inquirers, reflective, etc. They have the right to question others (adults or peers) about what they believe to be true. #learnlap
The belief that they have creative ideas, they CAN do it, they are respected and valued, they are one of the team/community, that they are safe #LearnLAP
A1: I’m a sp. ed. teacher. I work on reading with upper elementary Ss. Last year, I began actively involving Ss in tracking progress toward IEP goals. Whenever we progress monitor, we chart the trial on a graph, discuss the trend, and plan how to grow. #LearnLAP
A2 #learnlap Ss should know that their teacher is fully invested in them and they are capable of educational success. Their path just might be different from their peers. #conversechat
Students need to know that they can do hard things and can do it. They are on the right track and if they don't know it now, they don't know it, yet. I really try to focus on the power of YET as much as I can. #learnlap
A2: learning is a process. There will be times learning will come easy and I should push myself. And there will be times I struggle which is okay but I need to keep pushing.
Stay focused, accept feedback, and get ready for a challenge.
#LearnLAP
A2:
I am the owner of my understanding.
I can do anything.
If I fail it’s okay, because it makes me stronger.
I can use my strengths to show my understanding.
#LearnLAP
A2 Students should believe that they have the ability to grow their brains and learn new things at any time in their lives. They are not good at it YET, but can get there with the right tools and lots of practice, hard work and support. #learnLAP
A2: Love the theme on helping students see that mistakes are a part of the learning process. That said, learning from mistakes needs to be intention. "We don't learn from experience, we learn from reflecting on experience" - John Dewey #learnlap
I'm really leaning on growth mindset this year, unlike ever before. I love when the Ss often refer and remind us of having a growth mindset. You know something is getting through when this happens! #LearnLAP
All of this is based around a common theme as educators we must create a culture and climate that allows for all students to feel success and at the same time learn from their mistakes #learnLAP
A2:
I am the owner of my understanding.
I can do anything.
If I fail it’s okay, because it makes me stronger.
I can use my strengths to show my understanding.
#LearnLAP
A2- Growth mindset. Have a positive outlook, no fear of failure, and a willingness to persevere, even when the going gets tough. Always a good time to learn and grow. #LearnLAP
A2 Students need to know that they can do it, everyone takes different paths up the mountain it doesn’t matter how we get there as long as we work hard and get there #LearnLAP
A2- That they can learn, improve, and are good people. That they will fail and face adversity in school and life. How they deal with that adversity will determine their success. That we are in their corner here to guide them #learnlap
Look at the AMAZING lineup of moderators #LearnLAP has coming up! Thank you ALL for participating in such a meaningful discussion every week! I learn new things every chat!
A2: Ss have to believe that learning is a never ending cycle. They have to believe that we as Ts are also still learning. The way you learn, the speed in which you learn, and how you demonstrate that learning can and should be unique to each student. It's not a race! #LearnLAP
A2:
•Anyone can learn.
•Effort is directly connected with success.
•Growth is the goal.
•Failure is part of the learning process
•There’s always room for new ideas.
#LearnLAP
A2 Everyone learns differently and it's their responsibility to learn strategies from their teacher to discover works for them. They need to advocate for themselves. Also, the messiest learning can lead to the greatest outcomes #LearnLAP

A3 Technology can help deepen learning, can create new possibilities, opens student voice to the world, allows for creating connections & new learning. It amplifies current learning. If we assume students are masters at tech, we are hurting their learning. Guide them. #LearnLAP
A3: It can be helpful by allowing students to develop authentic products that they will be doing in their future. It can hurt if students substitute their brains for a computer. Technology is not just "Hey google this" it is about innovation! #learnlap
At the same time, it doesn't help to say these things unless students can see it in practice and experience success, even modest success, for themselves. Just as many learn by doing, students may also need to learn to succeed by doing. #learnlap
A2 The things that are the hardest are the most worth it in the end. Never give up because every failure is a new possibility to learn something new #LearnLAP
Tech is a tool that can be used to empower our Ss to collaborate, think critically, communicate locally and globally, and create. Google and FlipGrid are two powerful platforms that promote S voice and choice. #LearnLAP
A2: Ss need to have self-esteem and a decent belief system. They need to be empowered and given a voice. Ss need to understand that mistakes are not bad, they are part of the learning process. #LearnLAP
A3 technology can aid when taught correct uses, allows Ss a voice, and is a benefit to the greater community and greater good. We can't expect Ss to learn that on their own, though. #LearnLAP
A3: Tech is a mixed bag, for some it unlocks doors for achievement they had yet realized possible. For others it is a distraction of dank memes or whatever the kids are calling them these days lol #LearnLAP
A3: More opportunities for choice, collaboration, authentic audiences, forums for student voices. Don’t let tech be a babysitter or a distraction. #LearnLAP
A3: Tech is a tool that can be used to empower our Ss to collaborate, think critically, communicate locally and globally, and create. Google and FlipGrid are two powerful platforms that promote S voice and choice. #LearnLAP
A3: Technology promotes by giving more choice and autonomy. It can hurt by blinding Ss to what would be the MOST beneficial to their learning. Technology tends to put off this "cool" factor; but that might not be best for that particular student. #learnlap
A3: It can allow students to produce something truly impressive and beautiful in a relatively short time. It can hurt if there isn't equity in access or if the technology is too complex for some Ss. #learnlap
A3 If you have not used @Flipgrid please do yourself a favor and try it. What an amazing way to empower and share student voice. Let's give ownership of learning back to students. Let's listen to them and their story. #LearnLAP
A3) Technology can be a beneficiary and powerful resource if used proper it is essential that Ts work with students on the technology and not to allow the technology to be the sole factor in the classroom #learnLAP
A3 tech brings in an authentic audience, also great for student to share their thinking and take ownership of their learning. I think it would be devastating if they use digital tools with no feedback from teacher or peers #LearnLAP
A3: Start with the learning goal in mind. Don't pick the tech first. Have made this mistake. Please learn from this. Tech can not be one more thing. Needs to help show student thinking #Learnlap
A3: There’s so many ways! Technology gives students a chance to learn in a variety of ways. What can we connect with? What current events are happening?
It can hurt because sometimes, Ss don’t understand Digital Citizenship. #learnLAP
A3: I’m using Google Classroom and Docs finally this upcoming semester (HS ELA) to track student conference notes (by standard) and have students set daily goals for workshop to direct learning #LearnLAP
A3: Today a student that struggles to read, with her Ereader pen was able to do an article with Notice and Note without help and keep up. She lit up it was amazing. #learnLAP
A3 Tech can open a world of powerful and personalized learning opportunities...if Ts are brave enough to allow it and know how to teach in this model. Also allows for more global connections. #LearnLAP
A3: Tech. can be a tool for Ss to show their learning. What it should NOT do, especially at the early age of the Ss I teach, is take the place of human contact/relationship. #LearnLAP
Have you read "Learn Like a PIRATE" and want to connect with others at your grade level? Add your name to the #LearnLAP PLN spreadsheet: https://t.co/yqOsvPp2kv
A3: technology can be a tool to broaden perspective and understanding. It can give students a voice who might get lost in the crowd. Negative is making sure students know good sources and that techology is suppose to enhance and not be a crutch.
#LearnLAP
A2: Most important... well, students need to know that they are loved and valued. They bring what no one else can to the classroom community. If they feel safe, seen and heard, they will stretch and take risk! #Learnlap
A3 #learnlap Technology is our children's frequency so we need to incorporate it in our instruction BUT it shouldn't be used unless it enriches the learning experience. A work sheet is still a work sheet if it's on the computer!!
A3 Tech gives students a wider variety of ways to explore new ideas and express their learning. It can get in the way of authentic, face to face connections. Or they can think “the answer” is online instead of noticing the many answers in the room. #LearnLAP
Q3: It helps because tech provides almost limitless opportunities to create, iterate, and grow. It can hurt if tech is used as a tool for constant repetition, to regurgitate information, or if it is used almost exclusively without regard to other forms of learning. #learnlap
A3: technology can be a tool to broaden perspective and understanding. It can give students a voice who might get lost in the crowd. Negative is making sure students know good sources and that techology is suppose to enhance and not be a crutch.
#LearnLAP
A3: Tech is an amazing tool to help our students if it’s used correctly as effectively. Just popping kids down in front of an iPad or games is not the most effective way to utilize it for learning. #learnlap
A3 positive: Technology can help students experience things students might never have the opportunity to or open their minds to ideas and allow them to learn more skills to help them in our society #LearnLAP
Students must be guided with tech. Too often we make assumptions on student tech knowledge which just muddies an assignment/exploration rather than making the task accessible #LearnLAP
A3. The potential to grow an authentic audience can really boost engagement and agency. When students know they are creating for a REAL audience, all of a sudden the stakes are changed. #LearnLAP
A3- Tech puts the world at a S’s fingertips. Exploring the ocean from a computer or tablet screen using Google Earth; communicating with places across the globe with Skype, etc. The possibilities are endless. #LearnLAP
A3 Tech allows us to bring the outside world into our classroom, and focus on the skills that matter. I agree that some students do want to just "Google it" so we need to ask them to do more! If they can google it, then is it worth their time to do? #LearnLAP
A3 technology is helpful for the collaboration piece of growth in learning; it can help students connect to and collaborate with other learners #learnlap
#learnlap A3 Technology is ONE method of many to have Ss learn and CREATE their knowledge. Human interaction and learning how to work and LOVE each other is taken away if technology is overused.
A3: Technology helps the students create their own learning experience and gets them ready for the future .It also gives them real-time feedback if you are using @Seesaw or @Flipgrid. #learnlap#21stcenturyskills
Student can answer a question/series of questions. They can listen to other responses. As the teacher, I download videos, put in their drive, they can build a portfolio, find ways to deepen learning, share ideas, ask to create new grids to share ideas. #LearnLAP#studentvoice
A3) Tech helps students to be more creative, preps them for life, allows them to "test" things out and is low risk failure tool and allows for cooperation. All of this builds student agency. #LearnLap
A3) Negative: Students can become to dependent on devices. It breaks my heart when students don’t want to play games, build things, or even experiment without a computer #LearnLAP
A3: Technology allows students to collaborate, have choices when demonstrating learning and make discoveries. Technology apps for learning provides instant feedback. We need to ensure that we teach students how to be a responsible and safe digital-citizen #learnlap
A3 we load our student images w every decent accessibly tool we can find - UDL for all provides equity and access re curricula, assessment, instruction #LearnLAP#ATchat
A3: Tech can amplify student voice in and on authentic platforms; and as with anything in life, it should be purposeful and in moderation, beside best practices. #LearnLAP
A3: Helps students find a voice. My kids love sharing google slides with me of their passions. @Flipgrid is awesome but I know nothing can replace a hug, smile, and sweet spoken words. In math I still love good ol pencil and paper. #learnlap
Q3: tech is great for offering so many engaging ways to learn and demonstrate their knowledge. For my timid students, it lets me see a side to them I otherwise might not #LearnLAP
A3: Start with the learning goal in mind. Don't pick the tech first. Have made this mistake. Please learn from this. Tech can not be one more thing. Needs to help show student thinking #Learnlap
A3. Technology can help with learning, research, designing and creating new things, problem solving, communication, creating connections all over the world in learning. But if Ss are utilizing their brains and skills and having tech. do evythg. for them, their not lng. #learnlap

A3: Technology allows for creativity, global connectivity & communication outside the walls of a classroom. it can make amazing things happen for our Ss. But, if we don't walk with them, it can be full of digital pitfalls and mistakes. We must show them how to swim! #Learnlap
Yes I agree. I think thought you need to start there with some as they will not see the value if you don't show them how they can use it in their classroom. #learnlap
A4 Couldn't setting goals be a mixture? Students and teachers working together. At times, students can do it on there own. Sometimes they need help. Ultimately, goals are nothing without a plan, which takes both S and Ts. #LearnLAP
I’m currently reading Leaders of their Own Learning as part of a teacher-led PLC. I am thrilled about the possibilities! I’d recommend it to any educator looking to help students take ownership of their learning. #learnlap
A4: When Ss set their own goals they feel empowered to own their learning. Ts should model goal setting and be a constant moderator of reflection and encouragement. #LearnLAP
A3- By providing an audience for work, opening up doors to learn about whatever it is they want to learn about.. just like anything else there is danger when tools are not used appropriately It is important that we educate our Ss on how/why to use tech responsibly #learnlap
A4: Students should set their own goals, but there is a lot of work that must go into preparing them to do this. We must guide the students along the way #LearnLAP
A3:
I struggle with this because I looooove technology and want to know everything and be on the frontline. Fall semester when I was using pallet and Flipgrid and DoInk and Seesaw, I had to 🛑 and say—woooa—what’s really aiding learning. #LearnLAP
A4: Set their own goals with consultation with Ts. Kind of defeats the whole voice deal if we are a ventriloquism act. Kids are very good at seeing what they need if we set some guidelines. #learnLAP
A4: When students know what the learning target is, and reflect on their strengths and weaknesses to create goals that help them move toward understanding...it is literally the best #LearnLAP
Q4: Ss and Ts should work in concert toward setting goals, similar to how Ts and Admins work together. No matter the age, we can all benefit from guidance and mentorship, which is how setting goals can truly benefit Ss. #learnlap
A4- Ss should play a major role in their own goal-setting. Certainly can be a team effort w/ Ts and Ps, but Ss need to own their learning process. Makes for authentic growth. #LearnLAP
haha, memes that are dank? Definitely need to focus on using to tech to unlock doors for all, especially students being left out and caught behind #learnlap
A3: Tech is a mixed bag, for some it unlocks doors for achievement they had yet realized possible. For others it is a distraction of dank memes or whatever the kids are calling them these days lol #LearnLAP
A4: Tricky question! They need to be done together at early stages of education and have a gradual release of ownership by the teacher as the students progresses in their educational career. #LearnLAP
A4: I think it should happen together. I think the fear is that the students would pick irrelevant goals. As teachers I think its our job not to allow them to settle #learnlap
Q4: Ss and Ts should work in concert toward setting goals, similar to how Ts and Admins work together. No matter the age, we can all benefit from guidance and mentorship, which is how setting goals can truly benefit Ss. #learnlap
A4: I'm all about S voice! I think that if the S can set goals within parameters that the T sets up, then Ss should be able to show what they know in a way that best suits their learning style. #LearnLAP
A4: Students, with support of teacher, who has a broader understanding of the S as a learner. But Ss MUST be a stakeholder in their goals, or they have no meaning! #learnlap
A4: as an adult, I wouldn’t want you to come to me and tell me what my goal should be. So why do it with Ss?!? 🤔
We can guide them and highlight strengths so they feel empowered #learnLAP
A4: I'd say goal setting is a conversation. Students need to have an idea in mind, and teachers help guide students through developing a goal that is both challenging and attainable! #learnlap
When you have a time crunch and you can't get to all the voices in your classrooms, when you want to collaborate on ideas or Socratic-type seminars with other schools, when you want to share their voices and keep track for portfolios. @Flipgrid helps #LearnLAP
A4: when Ss are the ones doing the goal setting they have more ownership in those goals. Ts can lead them along but Ss should have the power. #LearnLap
A4 Ss who set their own goals, vocalize them, predict struggles and plan for success are better prepared to reach them; goals set by someone else lack the important ownership element. (I of 2) #learnlap
A4: from my own practice, I am currently setting student goals. I am working to give choice (independent reads rather than whole-class novels) and some options within assessment, but as I shift to workshops and SBL, I’m still deciding goals. Hopefully that will change #LearnLAP
A4: I think Ts need to provide the large processing concepts and learning targets so Ss are clear. Ss set their own goals, w/ feedback from T and peers. #LearnLap
A3: This question is directly tied to how we advocate for student agency- when Ss know where they are doing and have a SMART goal to get there we will see nothing but growth #LearnLAP
A4 #learnlap I think Ss should have a voice in setting goals. I like when my professors ask for my input on what I would like to achieve from their class. I am more successful when it's a collaborative decision.
A4 as an adult i wouldnt want somebody to set my goals for me. Ss should take ownership in goal creating. Teacher can help support along the way #LearnLAP
A4- At the Elem level you should use the gradual release of responsibility model. Support them when it’s needed but when they are ready, let them soar! #LearnLAP
A4: Have to say both. My kiddos do set good goals for themselves in certain areas but occasionally need help either narrowing things down or broadening their goals. We navigate together. #LearnLAP
A4 Both. Work together to set goals. Ss can know learning targets. They can also know own skills to work towards target & set goals to achieve. U will have S “buy-in” & see more success #LearnLAP
A2: Never giving up/perseverance, it's okay to fail as long as they tried/failing forward, they have the capability to make choices and learn in the way that works best for them, they should possess not only a growth mindset but an innovators mindset as well #LearnLAP
Both, I think it is important for teachers to set benchmarks or goals but also allow students in on making those goals or working with them on how to get there #LearnLAP
A3:
It can deepen he learning. I teach theatre, so it’s not a lecture driven class. But if we’re doing a unit and the Ss can find the factoids, so my instruction can be driven toward their practice and incorporating, then we go that route. #LearnLAP
A4 I believe it should be partnership. Students should be the owners of their learning and learning goals with guidance and support from their caring teachers..this is how we can start to move away from a model of conformity in schools #learnlap
A4: There needs to be a balance. Students need to set goals and track their progress. However, teachers can also help students push themselves and not settle for small gains. #learnlap
I'm waiting for a computer to do a unit on math and gardening...outside...tools and all. Yeah, I know the robots are coming, but until then #learnlap#getdirty
Every time a teacher tells me tech will replace us I bring out that tech cannot meet Maslow's. Teachers help guide students toward self-discovery and can develop transformative relationships that robots simply cannot replicate. #learnlap
A4 I do both. I determine the objectives we will teach according to the curriculum. Each unit my students all create an academic goal of something they will work towards. They also create a marking period goal that could be based on anything academic related. #LearnLAP
A4) Ss should set goals. Ts should help them prioritize, write them down and provide feedback to help them reach it. Balance between being a guide on the side and direct instruction. Differentiate by Ss. #learnLAPhttps://t.co/dMMEcbH0V3
A4 Of course we as teachers can set learning goals for our students. We can also help them discover how their assignments and interactions serve their own values.
#LearnLAP
A4: Students should own their goals. In order for them to have meaning, their must be a personal investment. Teachers should guide and support. Student voice is critical here. #learnlap
A4: Yes. That makes the most sense!! @RLGMike presented in a powerful PD talking about strengths. All people have them, we should celebrate and display them! Manage our weaknesses. #learnlap
A4 Only one answer! Students need to set their own goals. Teachers can help reflect, support and guide students. We need to empower students and let them find their own voice and decide on their learning objectives. We cannot do the work for them. #LearnLAP
A4: No one answer to this. It depends on child and situation. However, children should be aware of their goals and be able to articulate their purpose. #LearnLAP
A3: Sometimes Ss can get hung up with the bells and whistles of #edtech. I always require pre-tech prep with #graphicorganizers or other planning tools for students to storyboard before hitting the screens. I like this collection of GOs.. #LearnLAPhttps://t.co/zpjGP9ZLpY
A4: I ask my Ss what their goals are and then I ask them if they think they could achieve one step beyond those goals -- and then offer to help them if they think they can and want to. #learnlap
A4:
I don’t think it should be one or the other. I think it should be AND. Ts need to help gauge, and lead, and share the global class goals. #LearnLAP
@Flipgrid makes it easier for the teacher to group ideas, listen to voices and help share learning with students. If a student does a video himself for portfolio, more difficult to share. I do online collaborations with schools in the world with FG. #LearnLAP
People have been asking recently... Yes, bulk rates are available for "Learn Like a PIRATE!" Just DM me & let me know your needs! I personalize each book & offer video conferences!
Otherwise, it's also available on Amazon and B&N: https://t.co/AeHEOqH3fb#LearnLAP
A5: Still a work in progress but I think trust is the biggest practice and protocol. Trust that their voice will not only be heard but respected. #learnLAP
A4: Students should own their goals. In order for them to have meaning, their must be a personal investment. Teachers should guide and support. Student voice is critical here. #learnlap
Sharing goals with others: parents, fellow classmates, teachers. Intentional discussion each week. Setting goals myself and letting my Ss know about setbacks and successes. #LearnLAP
A4. Ss who can set their own goals and can monitor their progress to these goals through reflection, are the one's owning their own learning. Teacher's can lead by setting those progress benchmarks where Ss should be, but Ss should have the power to own their own learn #learnlap
A5: I am loving using #EDUProtocols. I am using "Fast and Currious" almost every day. Students love seeing their scores and class score get better every day. #Learnlap
Ss love frequent conferencing and reflecting back on their previous goal. Usually they bring me some sort of proof to say, "Hey, look I mastered that goal. Let's set a new one." It becomes their goal to beat their goal. #learnlap
A5: Sharing goals with others: parents, fellow classmates, teachers. Intentional discussion each week. Setting goals myself and letting my Ss know about setbacks and successes. #LearnLAP
Technology will never replace good teaching practices, nor vital teacher/student relationships. But it certainly can enhance learning and allow students to take charge of their own learning! #learnlap
Q5: Knowing what they are working on and why, reviewing their past progress, discussing strengths and areas that need improvement, coming up with ways to challenge themselves, fostering a Can Do attitude #LearnLAP
A5: In addition to collaboratively setting them, they need to check in on them frequently. Can’t put goals on paper and forget about them. Daily - what are you doing to make progress? What are you doing well? Struggling with? How can I help? Why don’t you try this? #LearnLAP
I agree. We need to define “success”. Ss have to know what they’re working toward in order to get there. I compare learning without a goal to going on a trip without knowing your destination. You probably won’t be going the right way or have the right materials. #LearnLAP
A5: Pre-assessment, by understanding what students already know, understand and can do, you can have very authentic conversations with students about what they need or want to know, understand and do. Ss must be part of the conversation. #learnlap
A5: Relationships! I have always found Ss much more likely to take a risk and work hard when I’d build that relationship with them PLUS the class family we’d built together. #LearnLap
A5:
As our school has been focusing on relationships and building a more positive school culture, we’ve been doing a lot of goal setting across the board. It’s not perfect, but it is becoming habit to set goals, evaluate them, tweak, and celebrate reaching. CULTURE! #LearnLAP
A5 truth be told, my follow through on learning goals has been hit or miss. Looking for more consistency and more effective way to give constant feedback without burning myself out. #LearnLAP
A3: Tech can help by giving students a tool to create, to use as a medium to assist in and exhibit their learning. It can hurt when Ts use it as a substitute for pencil and paper- missing the point! #LearnLAP
A5 #learnlap 1 of my professors @juliepjones uses a workng calendar that's flexible & as Ss we know there's flexibility in what material will be covered & when assignments are due.It allows us to spend more time on topics of interest or engage in authentic learning experiences.
A5 They see me setting goals for myself too. This is not just something that I am asking them to do. We have regular check-ins & we readjust our steps toward obtaining goals when necessary #LearnLAP
Having my students set goals, track progress & determine when goals are met is one of the most powerful things I have my students do. We set whole class goals daily & work on individual goals weekly.
@SownToGrow is a tool that I HIGHLY recommend! Please check them out! #LearnLAP
A5: We also use data binders. Ss can see the growth right there in front of them and are able to flip through from the beginning of the school year to the current point their at and see the growth and improvement. #LearnLAP
A5: I’m implementing daily goal-setting with conferences as well as weekly emails Home on progress beginning next week: I hope this helps students own their learning! #LearnLAP
A4 Middle ground? I think teachers should be involved in students setting their own goals. Additionally, teachers may have their own goals they want to help the Ss achieve. #LearnLAP
I often do graphic organizers on Drawings or Slides, but can't help but think it could be easier on paper. It think there is a huge added benefit of having all materials in a central place. #LearnLAP
Yes. A great exit ticket.
We share ideas about questions, share projects and next steps. We create ways to improve the community, to share kindness. It is all about empowering their voice. Creating accountability and engagement with an authentic audience. #LearnLAP
A5: I have found that setting goals with my students is great ! I have to model what I want from them . We can hold each other accountable and have goal parties #learnlap
A5 Teach them the art of deep reflection along with giving them a medium in which to do it through (blogs, videos etc). Allow them to set their own goals and explain why their setting them. All of this they must be taught how to do. Don't expect they know. #learnlap
A5) T modeling it and having students understand that success is not always a direct, straight line. They need to understand that setbacks will happen. Use the Power of Yet. #LearnLap
A5: I saw investment when we tracked our academic goals! We looked at data - set a goal (along with an action plan) - revisited with new data - acknowledged achievements - cycle continues. There has to be constant feedback and follow through. I also shared my goals! #LearnLap
A4: In elementary, some of both is appropriate. But it’s vital for Ss to understand the goal. I compare learning without a goal to going on a trip without knowing your destination. You probably won’t be going the right way or have the right materials. #LearnLAP
A4. Ss who can set their own goals and can monitor their progress to these goals through reflection, are the one's owning their own learning. Teacher's can lead by setting those progress benchmarks where Ss should be, but Ss should have the power to own their own learn #learnlap
A5: Tap into what Ss see as a need and/or want in their life. "What do YOU want for yourself? How could YOU be better by the end of the year?" Ss have to want it and see the purpose! #LearnLAP
A5 Students created digital goals and strategies that are posted in the class for our reference. They also created Flipgrid videos explaining their goals and strategies ( a pledge to themselves) #LearnLAP
A5. COnferencing regularly with Ss on progress related to goals and their work is important in letting them know THEY are in charge of their learning. We are there to guide and walk WITH them. #LearnLAP
A5: Candy! I'm joking, but I think if Ts are able to consistently hold Ss accountable with realistic goals (and short-term goals that lead to accomplishing a long-term goal) along with collaborative checkpoints, it can work. #learnlap
A5 If students created the goals (or at least helped) they should see the reason for it. Understanding WHY the goal is important should help students stay invested. #LearnLAP
A5 They need to have freedom in choosing their goals. Their learning needs to be tied to authentic experiences and have impact. No more fake learning scenarios. How can we make their learning matter. We need to figure that out together. One-on-one conferencing is best. #LearnLAP
A5: One to one conferences with Ss, solid, honest talk and SeeSaw has also been fruitful in this area, plus affords parents a view of the process. #LearnLAP
A5 Every friday is goal reflection time. At the end of every unit they have to take their learning journal home to be signed by parents. I hope it helps to start discussions at home. #LearnLAP
A5 Involving them in the process, celebrating success along the way, feedback in small chunks, building a positive relationship with them and positivity in your class. #learnlap
A5 Data binders and portfolios work great and are nice tools for students to use at conferences. This is also where students put their goals and reflections #LearnLAP
Maybe, though if the experience is designed right, can students still get there? Think playgrounds... Multiple activities, multiple goals, yet learning still happens #learnlap
A6) Individual data binders with grade level specific standards. Ss shade in that part of the standard after they show mastery and set goals for other standards #learnLAP
A5: I have found that setting goals with my students is great ! I have to model what I want from them . We can hold each other accountable and have goal parties #learnlap
I have a Google Doc set up for each of my HS Ss who start with me later this week where we can record conference notes. Eventually, I’d like to video record (@Flipgrid) these conferences to go along with the summary notes #LearnLAP
A5. To work with Ss on making strategies and goals and set up meeting with them to check their progress. Give them a form to fill out with questions that can help them self-reflect on their progress. During meeting discuss reflection Q's and poss. changes needed. #learnlap
It is done with an invitation and a code for that specific grid. You need to also meet the students where they are. Start by just recording their voice with a black screen, no name...they can work to goals of being on video. There are always ways to get there. #LearnLAP
Yes! There needs to be constant reflection on behalf of the students. I think we forget to do this sometimes... Get stuck in the fact memorization and even the creation of STUFF. Need to stop, reflect. Growth comes from that metacognitive moment. #LearnLAP
A6: My partner T created this for our math Ss to help them focus on their individual goal as well as their learning objectives. Could be adapted for any content. #learnlap@MrsEnglish308#hosplearns
A6 I am beginning learning logs as a means for Ss to reflect on what they have learned and project it forward. Like any subject, Civics is intertwined and past understanding only leads to more in depth future understanding #LearnLAP
A6 A6 I'm best with conferencing and checking in with conversations. I just have not been able to get binders, either physical or digital work for me. Students also write and reflect at pre-scheduled times. #learnlap
A5 Conferring is the best way to discuss goals and to see if the goals are a good fit for the student. 40 minutes once a week, seeing hundreds of kids, is tough to help each student pick goals, but I do provide 100% choice so I think that’s s good start. #workingonit#learnlap
A6 I created a learning journal that each student works in for the whole year, so they can track their progress and goals. If they meet their goal they need to set it higher or focus on something different. #learnLAP
A5 If students aren’t invested in their goals, they either need to notice that their goals don’t match their values (and then set new goals that do), or they need to choose to change their behavior. The more we’re convincing them, the less agency they have. #learnLAP
A3 It’s really important technology is used with a meaningful purpose. I love tech, but if you’re using it just because, then you’re missing the point. #LearnLAP
A5: I saw investment when we tracked our academic goals! We looked at data - set a goal (along with an action plan) - revisited with new data - acknowledged achievements - cycle continues. There has to be constant feedback and follow through. I also shared my goals! #LearnLap
A5: Stepping back from “telling” to instead asking questions and guiding Ss to identify what they do and do not understand, reflect on their learning, and set their own learning goals. Using stations is a great way to accomplish this. #LearnLAPhttps://t.co/C1UJyyvCnq
Q6:
Technology has been priceless in the arena of goal tracking. We video and share videos constantly. Keeping track grade wise Schoology and PowerSchool. This semester, we’re using learning journals in SeeSaw where they choose media to reflect. #LearnLAP
A6 All about a learning portfolio. Give choice on how to track. Use Google Drive, use a website, use a scrapbook. Have students choose how to demonstrate their progress & learning. I want various artifacts: videos, images, writings...anything creative to show growth. #LearnLAP
A6: In PreK, my Ss don't really... I do have "I can _____" (zip my coat, put on my own gloves?mittens, open my own milk, write my name, open my cereal wo/an explosion, etc) posted in the room. I add their names as they master the skill. #LearnLAP
A6: in kinder we use data binders with I Can Statements for all 4 quarters, which work great for goal setting no matter where they are academically. #LearnLAP
A6: Students track their progress through an interactive bar graph for their strengths and areas of improvement in Reading and Math! We are ALL learners! #learnlap
A6: Online tracking in both math and reading online. Ss shared with me their "summit" after reading #nosummitoutofsight by Jordan Romero and we revisit that summit! #LearnLAP
A6: When I was in the classroom (not long ago), we did keep track of our goals and recorded progress on our blogs and our digital portfolios. Sharing success via Twitter, Genius Hour presentations, and responsibility partners, etc. It's all about community! #learnlap
Various uses. Sometimes in the classroom, at home, during lunch hour. Used to generate discussions, to hear ideas from everyone. @mr_meighen also creates great summary videos to empower their voices. Let your creativity guide you. #LearnLAP
In reply to
@teachermike72, @Flipgrid, @mr_meighen
Q6: At the kindergarten level, I have my students color bar graphs to show progress over time. They love to "beat" their scores and when they don't we talk about ways to continue working toward the goal. Even kindergarten kids can reflect on their own learning process. #LearnLAP
A6: Students have a goal sheet that list their goal . We fill out how the teacher can help and their parents. Everyone gets involved. #learnlap#Teamwork
A6. Keeping a data /progress binder for every Ss is essential. Where everything is documented, and Ss can see their progress results and can work on changes when ncessary. #learnlap
A6: Love the themes of student-owned data binders and reflection journals. I always struggled with how to easily give feedback to all students on these. i also wonder if we can incorporate more reflection in the traditional data binder (including how students feel) #learnlap
A6: for our Grammar Quiz Fridays, students chart their answers after we review. The chart arranges the questions by topic (S-V agreement, parallel structure, etc) and students record a 1 (correct) or 0 (incorrect). They can see trends as semester goes on #LearnLAP
I get this...to a point. Because if I'm teaching Algebra I and a S tells me his or her goal is adding basic numbers (and already knows how to do it) there is an issue. Ss need guidance just as adults do. #LearnLAP
A3 technology is either a strength or a weakness for teachers. technology is and always will be a huge thing in our students lives. Using it in your classroom gives them the exposure they need for the real world! #LearnLAP
A6 By offering opportunities and support rather than mandates and requirements...building suspense, trying new things ourselves from the learners point of view as @gcouros states in #InnovatorsMindset#learnlap
#learnlap A6 In Texas the Ss get a detalied report back on the state assessments in regards to how they improved or got worse on specific learning objectives. Of course this is Test data which does not test many qualities a St may learn from a Tr. A good Tr improves the total St
A7: When Ss truly feel a sense of agency and empowerment, they begin to take their learning beyond what you originally planned. In addition, you could "leave" the classroom and they keep going. #LearnLAP
A7 Students are empowered to learn on their own and voice their opinions. They are clearly comfortable in taking risks and not setback by failure. #LearnLAP
A6) I have seen graphs, charts, notes, etc. What is impt is that Ss keep track, reflect on next steps. Talk to each other and talk abt strengths, what worked and also DID NOT work. Learn from failure as well #LearnLap
A7: Independent. It is that simple, once it is truly established I will take an observer role more than a direct teacher role in the practice portion of our day. #learnLAP
A7 when Ss bring outside on-their-own Learning to me- when they take learning experiences I’ve designed for them beyond my intentions- when kids ask for/about their learning and how to expand it ... 😀#LearnLAP
a7 I know my S has reached agency when s/he regularly turns in HW with every problem worked out logically bc they have reached for learning when unsure. #LearnLap
A7: When students OWN their learning. I KNOW my students have OWNED their learning when they can TEACH IT to others! Choice and VOICE is KEY in every classroom! #learnlap
A7) when students begin to take their own learning into their hands and are excited and engaged every second of class this can only come about through #EffectiveRelationships#learnLAP
Thanks so much #LearnLAP. Gotta head out for tonight. Need to get ready for tomorrow. First day back! :) Just not enough time in the day to keep learning from these amazing people.
A7 Students will like school and learning more and more as they move from K to 12 instead of the opposite. We won't hear school is boring from Ss #learnlap
A7: When students feel confident and are willing to take risks. When students continue to push and challenge themselves each day. Students and teachers will be supportive, celebrate and provide feedback, #learnlap
A7 Define successful. It will always be a work in progress. When students feel comfortable to share their voice, when they feel that they matter, that their work matters. When they are excited to learn, and push themselves & others, they will have that agency. #LearnLAP
A6 We do trimester reflections: What did you get better at? What do you want to learn or improve at next? What are you doing to learn or improve? Who can help you practice? Who can give you more feedback? #LearnLAP
A7: Ss will be self directed and will not feel the need to ask permission to move to the next step to advance their learning. They will seek feedback from peers. Ss will Be problem solvers! #LearnLAP
A6 @sowntogrow has been an easy place for students to chart progress and reflect regularly and easy for me to see their info, also easy for parents, no lost papers #learnlap
A7: I think when all of this becomes autonomous, that's successful student agency! If it could be built into the culture of the school, I think you would start to see huge changes that affect students and teachers in a positive way! #LearnLAP
A7: When students feel confident and are willing to take risks. When students continue to push and challenge themselves each day. Students and teachers will be supportive, celebrate and provide feedback, #learnlap
A7 I don't know if there is an endpoint. Every year and every student this will look different. I hope that I never get to the point where I am like "this is it" because that is when you stop growing. #learnlap
A7: I tell my Ss to “need less of me and more of you,” So when I see them solve a “problem” independently where they would have sought me to fix.. #LearnLAP
Q7 I know my students are into their work when they are thinking about, discussing and working on their ideas outside of my art room. Also, when they want to come to my room during lunch and indoor recess. Both examples of kids in charge of their learning. #learnlap
A5 Ss set their own goals. We hang them up and take them down and “crush” them when they goal is reached! Most important thing in goal setting is listing the steps you have to take to reach the goal! Great words from @leighmragsdale#learnlap
A7:
When the students need me very little, especially for day-to-day matters. When they know what they need to do and do it. When they look at my assignments and assessments and say, “Oh, we can give/do more than that. And they do. #LearnLAP
A7: I do think there is a risk that teachers get this idea that they can turn over the learning and that free's them up. It shouldn't. Our role might change but it is still hands on minds on. #LearnLAP
Reflection so important. Our school is trying to do a better job with our students. We are doing a quarterly activity to help students improve there personal growth plan based on their 7c's #learnlap
The struggle is real. Always find ways around it with other tools. Keep challenging status quo. We can't let fear stop learning. If we never teach and guide, they will never learn. We need to believe in them, trust them, teach them, care about them. #LearnLAP
A7: Ss showing what they know in different ways. Ss willingly sharing what they know with others (Ss, Ts, Admin., & Parents). Ss actively engaged in their own learning.
A7 Ss working & assisting each other. I would not be needed to facilitate activities because Ss were managing those needs. I could assist S w/ academic questions #LearnLAP
A7 when Ss are able to come up with a strategy for learning something the second time, when they don't get it on the first try #learnlap#lifelonglearning
A7: Learning activities that are meaningful and relevant to learners, driven by Ss interests, and self-initiated with guidance as needed from Ts. Simply put, student agency gives students voice and choice, in how they learn. #learnlap
#learnlap A7 My goal each year is for my Ss to describe me with the Fruits of the Spirit at the end of the year. WALK THE TALK and role model LOVE to ALL your Ss, IMO this is just as great as academic objectives. Attached is a powerful parent letter that can result from this.
A6 @sowntogrow has been an easy place for students to chart progress and reflect regularly and easy for me to see their info, also easy for parents, no lost papers #learnlap
A7 my whole mindset is to set up my Ss with tools they can use when they leave school. The world will not be kind to ppl that do not continue to learn and grow even if they aren't being forced too. School shouldn't produce robots. #LearnLAP
A7. When Ss feel confident that they can control and pace their own learning and not be afraid to take risks. They will be able to set their own goals, check progress, see growth, and move forward! #learnlap
A7 If students have truly embraced their own power and are eager to learn, they should be able to do it without you having to steer the ship all the time. I love standing back sometimes and watching the magic happen.
#LearnLAP
A7 It is an ongoing process. BUT when students share regularly, develop their unique voice, and begin to participate as active members in the process: including instruction... You are well on your way. #learnlap
Favorite teaching moment this year is when principal walks in because there is so much noise only to find out that students are fully engages and are learning. #learnlap
Believe me, craziness and loud students do not bother me at all!!! In fact, I love when they have the confidence to be themselves as they cooperate #learnlap
A7 When I have created a joy and curiosity for learning like @burgessdave explains here https://t.co/WDxosEhOds Then I have begun to see student agency at work. Strive to make it better for kids. Give them adventure, passion, power, love, kindness. #LearnLAP
A8: It is a shock to the system. Students are so use to being told what to do and how to do it they have not formed the connections in their brain to process the words choice and school together. #LearnLAP
A7: When students show a desire to go beyond what they already know about a topic and explore it further. When they collaborate with each other to enhance their own learning and/or teach their peers. Looks like student-to-student discourse with the teacher as a guide. #LearnLAP
A7 Students demonstrate agency when they are excited to share their work-not because they have THE right answer but because they made a discovery and expanded what is possible. #learnlap
This is so true. When I explain the workshop model to other HS ELA Ts, I say that I’m not planning to teach for 80 min a day any more (more like 15), but I need to constantly be on the move, coaching and troubleshooting. We can’t just give kids “work time” and sit back #LearnLap
A8: Student disagreeance... BUT, a teaching point was made to show how we EFFECTIVELY communicate our thoughts and opinions. "I see your thoughts/views, but I disagree because..." #LearnLAP This skill MUST be taught in today's world!
A8: I found Ss were apprehensive at first! They needed a lot of reassurance that they were "doing it right" After years of being told what to do and how to do it, all the choices and ownership threw them for a loop! But with the right support, they soar! #LearnLAP
A6 Ss set short and long term goals. I let students pick how they wanted to track their goals. Based on the goal and the steps they have to take to reach the goal! #LearnLAP
A8: the older students are, the more scaffolding this tends to require because students are being told exactly what to do and to being done when they find the answer they were “supposed” to get #learnlap
A8 When you begin, it is a lot of work. You get any strange looks and people who do not believe. It is different. I find a PLN that pushes me, supports me. I learn, I connect. I remember that I do what I do for kids. Amazing book is #kidsdeserveit Do it for them! #LearnLAP
Q8 Sometimes rules get in the way so break them sometimes the kids need motivation so I try to motivate them, sometimes kids give up so I don't let them, sometimes negative people get in the way so I stand up to them , just try my best to give me kids/Ts what they need #learnlap
A8 Getting Ss to take risks. It’s scary and it is ok if things don’t work out the way you planned the first time. Try it a different way....this was & can still be a foreign concept #LearnLAP
A8: We struggled with this at my last school, which is why I left to work on this challenge and found @sowntogrow! Here's one of my favorite screens for students. Would love feedback from everyone on this chat!! #LearnLAP
A7 If they write stuff down without my telling them to. If they write about topics that genuinely matter to them. If they bring stuff in related to the topic we’re studying. If their parents know all about what’s happening in class. #LearnLAP
I use the fish bowling method to model what I want them to do and how I want it to look. I use my own work book (just 1 like theirs) and have all the resources on a table for them to collect themselves. I learnt this from Michael Ymer. #LearnLAP
A7 my whole mindset is to set up my Ss with tools they can use when they leave school. The world will not be kind to ppl that do not continue to learn and grow even if they aren't being forced too. School shouldn't produce robots. #LearnLAP
Its still a work in progress. Q1 was a self assessment. Q2 was an activity to make a plan for improvement. Q3 is going to be another check but going to match students with parents, teachers, and resources for the C they want to improve. #learnlap
A8: The biggest challenge I've faced is fear. Ss - who were in 6th Grade by the time I met them - were almost paralyzed by the fear of failure, particularly when it stemmed from their choices. Developing relationships made the biggest impact toward positivity. #learnlap
A8 Building student agency is the awesome goal...and it will take an awesome paradigm shift for many educators to stop being the sage on the stage and allow student agency. #LearnLAP
A8 Another struggle, students don't like change and are not used to being consulted or having a voice. They will need encouragement. They will need support to learn how to lead. We need to be there for them. Don't give up. It is a bumpy but fun & rewarding road. #LearnLAP
A8: We struggled with this at my last school, which is why I left to work on this challenge and found @sowntogrow! Here's one of my favorite screens for students. Would love feedback from everyone on this chat!! #learnlap
A8) Competing against a traditional classroom that everyone is familair with (Ps, Other Ts/Admins and Ss) . Continue to show and celebrate every little success story. You do not need 100% buy in to try something new. #LearnLAP
A8:
The biggest challengeI face is teaching a class not considered “core.” Many students are just put into my class without signing up. They know that failing mine will not hold them back. I battle the “her class doesn’t mean anythings.” I seek to build relationships. #LearnLAP
A7 Ss using what they have learned and sharing what they learn with others! Love hearing my Ss talk to their classmates or other teachers about a lesson!! #LearnLAP
