A1. Kids w/ anxiety issues may have nail biting, skin picking or scratching, difficulties sleeping, muscle tension, be easily irritable & may express worries or use “what if” questions. They may be overly concerned with school performance and punctuality. #ldchat
UnderstoodOrg: RT StephanieSarkis: A1. Part 2: Kids with anxiety problems may also have difficulty focusing in class, and may seem "jumpy" or easily startled. #ldchathttps://t.co/FwMgBKey9s

@angela_lange25 Yes, anger can be a sign of anxiety, along with the other signs you mentioned. Separation anxiety can be more pronounced as well. #ldchat
Yes, @DonJohnstonInc, sleep disruptions especially are common in kids with anxiety issues. Difficulty falling asleep, waking up in middle of night, and waking up too early. Also nightmares & sleepwalking. #ldchat
A2. We all experience stress and anxiety at some point. However, an anxiety problem or disorder is at the end of the spectrum – including uncontrollable worries, sleep disturbance that impacts kids and adults most of the day. #ldchat
A2: Stress is short term & somewhat easier to manage. Anxiety is long term & will need direct modeling & everyday practice of effective coping strategies #LDchat
A2. Part 2: Family history is a good guide to whether anxiety is just a normal reaction or if it might be a disorder. Did anyone else in the family have a history of worrying most of the day nearly every day? #ldchat
All kids feel anxious from time to time. But kids with learning and attention issues are more likely to struggle with #anxiety. #ldchathttps://t.co/SxAxWzwr6r
A2 I always thought of Anxiety as continuation of stress response without the trigger being immediately present - and an anxiety problem as serious persistant anxiety not situational. #ldchat
@commlearncenter Yes, frequency, intensity and duration of the anxiety symptoms are a big piece of whether it is situation-dependent or a disorder. #ldchat

Understanding the difference between typical anxiety we all feel and an anxiety problem is so important to helping students find they ways they learn best. #ldchat

@TMAndrews2006 Yes, I describe an anxiety disorder as feeling like there is a tiger ready to pounce, but there is no tiger. This is particularly true with panic attacks. #ldchat

Should parents try to ignore nervous fidgeting? Even when the fidgeting is really noticeable, like a girl using her long hair to floss her teeth? #ldchat@StephanieSarkis
@DWardwritergirl I tell parents that they are the experts on their kid - not us - and talk to your pediatrician when your parent intuition tells you that something isn't right, or your child's quality of life is being affected. #ldchat
@julierawe It might be a good opportunity to talk with your child about if something is bothering her at school or at home. The fidgeting could also be related to attention issues, or both attention and anxiety. #ldchat

When you inherit ADHD genes, you’re also more likely to inherit genes for anxiety disorders at the same time. You also can have “secondary” anxiety – you're a happy kid, but get in trouble at school for not completing work or talking out in class, & anxiety results. #ldchat
A3: I believe children & adults with ADHD become overwhelmed with how quickly their mind/thoughts are going & managing many personalities around them #LDchat
Q3: When you know in your heart that you do not have the tools necessary to ease your child's pain. Modeling how to ask for help is also important for kids to learn. Show them we all need help at diff times in our lives. There's no stigma in knowing when to ask. #ldchat
@angela_lange25 Yes, there's a lot of stimuli that the ADHD brain takes in all at once...and it is difficult to filter all of it out, leading to sensory overstimulation and anxiety. #ldchat

A3 I believe all people that are not #neurotypical are at high risk for #anxiety regardless of the dx (#ADHD#ASD#FASD#TS etc) because the world at large is constantly telling them their natural impulses are wrong #ldchat
They feel anxious about things they can’t control & how others are treating their differences. Many adults need to build a better more positive outlook on children with ADHD & how anxiety plays a role in their everyday lives #LDchat
@tmandrews2006 There is research showing that the percentage of comorbidity between anxiety and the disorders you mentioned is higher than in the general population. #ldchat

A4. Let kids know that you can always talk with them about their concerns. Answer kids’ “what if” questions. Talk with your health care provider, and seek counseling. Limit access to social media and TV – review what kids are watching. #ldchat

A4. Part 2: Also, shut off electronics at least one hour before bed and have an "unwind" time. Studies have shown backlit devices inhibit melatonin release, which makes it even more difficult for kids, especially those with anxiety, to get to sleep. #ldchat

Yes I am aware - I have not seen any good studies however that separate true co-morbidity from secondary effects. That I would love to see. Accommodations and empathy do a lot to relieve #anxiety for my child #LDChat
