Great to be a part of my first CatholicEdChat since joining NCEA as the Director of Professional Development.
OMG I need to use that pic in one of my presentations!
Good morning Running a little late today! PD unfortunately is seen as a necessary evil around my way 😯
Professional Development- improving skills, b. meeting more experienced educators, c. finding new areas to grow in teaching
RT A1: PD keeps me growing as an educator - challenges me to look at things in new ways
A1 As an educator, Professional Development is so important to help me be the best Teacher I can be!
A1b: my field happens to be catechesis
MT A1: to increase skills,; to stay fluent in current trends and topics, especially in-field
Love this! Feels too true sometimes!
A1 Learn and be inspired by my peers! And hopefully meet new people!
A1 I'm finding new ways to present material to my students
Hi Abbie - so excited that you are leading us today!
You are not alone in that unfortunately Jessica! Too common in a lot of places viewed as one more thing to do
A1 To stay current and improve practice
A1: PD should help us grow in our work and be renewed. Also, making connections and learning from each other.
love meeting my PLN in person! Can't wait to see everyone in San Diego!
PD keeps me excited about the vocation to teach by learning with colleagues.
A1: PD gives us the opportunity to grow and expand our own learning.
that's common around here too--many teachers think it's stupid and just "a day off"
PD is critical in providing support and new learning for faculty and administrators.
just make sure you remember that you have just as much to offer as experienced educators :)
Yes! I am always eager to "go forth and teach" after a great PD session!
Q6 will- hopefully- show more possibilities. PD doesn't have to be limited by local admin
A1: love when I have a chance to really visit with a member of my PLN. Had many great lunches at
Yes! It doesn't help that its often scheduled at the worst times: the day before school or after a long day
You get what you put in It's all about attitude.
Thats so true, its fun leading sessions at SHU- try to come prepared as I can for these. Tech is my strength.
Q2: Time, money, energy are limited resources. What PD experiences are "worth it"? Why?
Yes! and will have a tweet up Wednesday at details coming later.
PD about a topic I want to explore (online, book, workshop), I want to learn. I am engaged. Worth it to pay myself.
a2
Meaningful, doable, with specific purpose, differentiated to each Ts not only pie-in-the-sky
so true. You can get something from the worst pd if you look for it
A2 Free PD like are wonderful! No lesson plans to prepare and PD to meet my needs.
A1 To grow as a professional in a ever-changing world. In my role as ed-tech specialist, it’s to inspire Ts to do the same!
Yes! Wouldn't it be nice if we all got a little to spend on PD of choice?
Even when we're trapped in an endless meeting... ;-) https://t.co/FjQXKw1KfD
Gospel: Jesus asks us to love our enemies and pray for our persecutors. There are no exceptions. It's hard to do, but this is Christ's way.
Doable and specific would be on my list too https://t.co/HYyeFl3t77
a2
Meaningful, doable, with specific purpose, differentiated to each Ts not only pie-in-the-sky
A2 PD that is followed up on...not just one and done. Ts need time to put into practice and get feedback.
A2: participant buy in makes it worth it. I have to see the value and have it fit into my plan.
A2 Twitter chats are great ways to get conversations started. So many connections, ideas, and projects are started here!
I think any PD opportunity that meets the needs of the learner is worthwhile. Self-directed learning is always meaningful.
finding a pearl You can usually find at least one even in PD don't consider good
Q2 best PD has been when own standout Ts can lead breakouts for other Ts! It's free & directly impactful
A2. PD I know can improve specific weaknesses, within reason to reach, something I would want to share w/ others.
Q1 Often PDmeans develop people to enhance how they perform professionally. Professional learning focused growing indiv prof
Yes!! https://t.co/LDrdQFjuYi
A2 Twitter chats are great ways to get conversations started. So many connections, ideas, and projects are started here!
A2 All PD is worth it-you can always find one thing to take away. However, just like with Ss, you need to differentiate.
A2: shameless plug for programs. has been worth my time and energy. Being around motivated people
very true! That's why meeting your PLN in person is so great. Questions and answers are a tweet away.
A3: A PD that provides practical resources is always helpful. Also, going with a colleague so you can discuss.
Favorite pt of Student Teaching- skype session I organized via twitter and idea came from here. https://t.co/Vl25UBpjXl
A2 Twitter chats are great ways to get conversations started. So many connections, ideas, and projects are started here!
hey, Jim! Good to see you!
Yes! Love and value everyone I meet at PD.
we want differentiation for student learners but so often ignore it for adult learners. So frustrating
Differentiate is so important. https://t.co/B9hZNcuXBH
A2 All PD is worth it-you can always find one thing to take away. However, just like with Ss, you need to differentiate.
A2 PD that addresses something you need to learn or work on is always the best can be via social media, informal, or formal
Thanks, Abbie! Good morning, all. Happy to be here with all of you today. https://t.co/q1bgyEAj8U
A2: shameless plug for programs. has been worth my time and energy. Being around motivated people
morning! Beautiful weather your way too?
You need to "differentiate" just like we do with our Ss.
Not realistic for admin to demand diff'n for Ss, but don't practice what they preach. Yes- diff'n is hard!
taking a graduate class on this- seen some fascinating material- currently working on a TEDEd Talk
Quick hello. Couldn't make last week. Can't make this week or next week. I'm sad but thankfully I can look and reply later!
Q2 Aligns personal & professional needs to standards & if needed System priorities. Acid test: Does it build capacity?
I wish more Ts saw the value in Twitter as PD. I've learned so much from people here.
Exactly! We all have different learning styles and have different needs!
Story on yesterday about science teachers keeping up w/ the latest in Global Warming, why aren't they all on Twitter?
hey, Rick! Great to see you this AM!
I haven't gotten to that point yet, but I would love that. Sounds like you have a tight group.
We have an obligation as educators to keep learning and growing.
I agree but would be excited if teachers found what speaks to them even if Twitter isn't it
Nice to be here this morning and not at my kids' sports ... but I love that too (stop typing Jim) :-)
Q3: How does good PD make you feel?
It's so easy to have Ts fill out a Google form to find what they want from PD then make it happen
been on Twitter since 2007 and to 15 !
a3 Inspired, armed with new tools or mindsets to improve how I teach and work with ss
i have some colleagues who hate twitter bc they use it personally and don't want to mix.
Many Ts don’t understand how to use twitter for PD and I give them one hashtag related to their classroom and Boom!
But that is still not a common practice!
informal conversations with fellow teachers are sometimes the best PDs
A3: I feel like I have tools (skills, contacts, resources, knowledge) to do something better the very next day
A3. Invigorated! I can hardly wait to try new concept/learning at school.
A3: Good PD should make you excited to try the new things you have learned.
I have colleagues who completely refuse to use social media. Don't get it!
I get that ... can run a separate account OR find something that works for them professionally
Me too! It's hard to be up at 6am on a Saturday but what I gained has been invaluable!
A3 Recharged! but then exhausted at the end because so much energy was expanded learning and connecting.
A2 breaking the isolation of teaching and allowing Ts to have more opportunities of collaboration https://t.co/B5Htjn8T2B
PD talk... Ummm.... I might slowly slink away.
that is why I love Edcamps!
A3: Good PD makes me feel excited to get back in the classroom and try something new! Inspired!
Completely agree! Love to see Ts excited about any learning.
Even if you haven't met them in person, reach out to those you tweet with.
A3 Inspired, renewed, excited to teach again!
they think it’s SOCIAL, I email tweets that pertain to them and they start to get buy in.
why?! PD is exciting- when you find the right flavor! with some ;-)
Wrong to expect of our Ss if we won't model it ourselves
A3 Inspired, excited, renewed!
A3 Inspired, but with practical tools I can turn to and use within the week. Otherwise, I forget!
As an admin I create plans using DI for PD I do w/Ts so I can use it as ex when talking w/struggling Ts
A3 On fire to share what learned and to take risk to put into practice
A3 Once is introduced at PD, everyone uses it the next day!
I need to get to another Edcamp
Good PD is energizing and motivating! I like to learn and share new ideas with those who share a common interest.
enjoy those times, it passes so fast
A3. Excited, Connected. Affirms passion. Makes me look fwd even more to receiving my Teaching Licenses this June.
A3 Good PD leaves me knowing how to better help kids - how to better help them learn and love God.
A3: inspired, refreshed, and ready to make a difference. Continuing my PD allows me to grow as an educator.
neat idea! Will try that.
I found by mistake while bored in a bad grad class. Seeking out fitting PD is a professional responsibility
I found by mistake while bored in a bad grad class. Seeking out fitting PD is a professional responsibility
A3: makes me excited and happy, unless a PD session devolved into a complain fest or a "this is how we do it better than you
Educators on Twitter are so generous with their help! Love my PLN!
I agree 100%- its a tough hurdle to get through
some Innovators are going to one next Sat, but I fly out Sat morning :( one coming up next month
I started off w/ personal acct but now use it professionally. Separate acct like said
YAY! Good that you are here! What are challenges to deliver a good PD? What do you hope to happen?
having a good moderator for a session is important!
let's find some to go to!
Good Morning and peeps! Some great tweets this morning!
Same, but in an undergrad class Amazing the good that came from it- learned more from this than Bio https://t.co/tZL5Z4yLvq
I found by mistake while bored in a bad grad class. Seeking out fitting PD is a professional responsibility
that is TOO funny! So glad you found
Sydney Catholic Schools (formerly Catholic Education Office Sydney) in 2008 developed PL Framework https://t.co/bA6CdIAEJf
A3 That knowledge is energizing
is now trending in USA, ranking 32
good morning! Great conversation today!
YES! I'm in. Gonna work on a Podstock session sometime. Waiting to hear from USM Spark.
that's why I'm friends with
A2 relevant, timely, job-embedded. Also need time to practice & apply, esp after a large conference. Socializg importnt too
and once you develop relationships, the power expands! has transformed me!
Good morning all. Sorry to join late.
Couldn't agree more! and I talk about this all the time
Biggest challenge is exactly what Ts ask for... Making it interesting for all.
We all work together to be better for our Ss!
it's Joe awesome! Loved meeting him at last year's NCEA. Loved how he comments on my blogs too.
whatever gets us there Abby! Lol - you're a hoot
Q4: What are signs of a bad PD?
Seems like sometimes en-courage-ment is more important outcome than just getting new information.
This is making the NCEA convention circled on my calendar for 2017- can't go this yr.
I bet! We Ts make for terrible ss once we check out. Sorry 'bout that. I hope convo this morning provides ideas!
Learning is best and transformative when you look at something a different way
? More like Non-catholic Ed Chat, amirite?
A4 Good thing about bad PD-makes me think about what it is like to be a student in a boring class-Empathy
A4: Sit and get! I have to talk, ask questions, move around. Just like my own classroom.
Welcome! It's a great group!
A4: lack of engagement, forced agenda. There's never a perfect time for educators, but there are bad times to do PD
if you are into tech, also put ISTE on your to do list :)
a4
Standardized across too wide a group, enforces status quo, could be done as an email, limited by 4 walls
A4 Nothing worse than walking out of PD feeling like you just wasted your time
Just don't check out before we begin, ok?
its fun telling people that you connect w/ ts and admins across country.
The Aussies have it going on with education!
love when the status quo is questioned! is great at asking questions.
A3: inspires me to change my classroom for the better as soon as I return. I love making connections with like minded people
I give the presenter benefit of a doubt. But, teaching , I'm used to having to win attention.
when specifically is a bad time?
A4: Signs of bad PD: trouble making connections, watching the clock, and checking emails
Twitter convo 3 yrs ago grown to going to Hong Kong to work with school in March
Like December.... No one is paying attention in December.
A4 a one size fits all approach - needs to be what Ts need at level they need it
where are they? Sadly don't know much about them!
RT : A3: inspired, refreshed, and ready to make a difference. Continuing my PD allows me to grow as educator.
A4: if it's a bad lesson for student learners, it's a bad lesson for adult learners. stop telling me to sit still & quietly
MT Twitter chats -great way to get conversations started. connections, ideas, and projects are started here!
A4: have spoiled me for traditional PD. I vote with my feet! If the session isn't meeting my needs, I leave.
Hey , great convo at about pd! https://t.co/ov1lrh25g4
A4: if it's a bad lesson for student learners, it's a bad lesson for adult learners. stop telling me to sit still & quietly
A4: a lecture with no resources, sometimes lack of tech can be frustrating (videos, etc.)
A4 Direct instruction! If it's boring for our Ss then we should realize it's boring for Ts
A4: when presenters act as if they have all the answers
Conducted my own PD session on twitter. and I'm 22. and twitter are great.
A4: I take my learning seriously!
Bad pd - k-12 teachers all in one room on uncomfortable cafeteria seats, slides read to us about teaching multiplication
A4: when people stop smiling. But really, "mandatory" things that are made to feel thrown on you. Here: safe environment ex.
A4 No humor! We all need it!
A4 glassed over eyes. Ts making papers. Ts rolling eyes. All signs of losing them.
People going to sleep, needing regular breaks, checking emails, marking papers during a PD session-a few indicators
Thank you ... Twitter, PLN, and connections have changed me and my teaching!
I hate when they read off the slide! Just send me link!
. Hands on tech is essential at ProfDev - you can view, apply, share, collaborate, extend w/ tech access
it really happened, was very expensive as I did a lot of online shopping!
A4 My pet peeve is someone reading a powerpoint presentation
YES! We know no one person has all the answers (Well, except for Jesus)
A4: My venn diagram of people who say they won't read every PPT slide to you and those who do are concentric circles.
Edcamps are the way to go! I can’t do traditional PD. It’s all about choice with PD
I wonder if 1st c. rabbis had PD to attend? Is that what happened when JC was 12?
As a teacher. I hate this. As a student. I hate this. Same for Professional Development. https://t.co/00j84SJ788
A4 My pet peeve is someone reading a powerpoint presentation
Yes! Love having the tech tool, exploring right along with everyone.
That is so cool!! Congrats!
Please ... no death by Powerpoint
A4 PD can't ignore the expert knowledge people bring into the room. I've seen presenters ignore their audience sadly
, Mike Dean , , , , SATs , ,
Some Ts go in with an attitude that it's going to be boring and don't participate it'sfrustrating
exactly! We had a session scheduled to have teacher who's been out of classroom read tg to us once 1/2
Q5: How do you find PD opportunities that fit your needs as a learner?
LOL!! You should present that drawing to them after ;)
love to have tools at my hands BUT only if the tech is actually working!!!!
Just thinking: how can Ps hold Ts who don't read accountable? There must some thought of this https://t.co/vVZxIuNhJT
I hate when they read off the slide! Just send me link!
we're doing a class next wk on leading PD at Seton Hall. Printing this photo as warning of it.
Love it when I am surrounded by people with contrary ideas and views during PD. forces me to stretch my thinking
Q4: Providing engaging, interactive PD for tchrs is a good chance to model best practice tchrs can use with the students.
I used sway in a presentation recently--ppl liked it better than .ppt
Thanks Christine! We've certainly been focused on key aspects of Edu for awhile.Unlike USA we have 6 states
True confession Not a prezi fan love style with pics and interactivity tell the story
The power of the is incredible! If you find what fits your needs, your PD world opens up!
I'm thinking of Jesus reading from the scrolls- master PD deliverer??
I have attached a Google Form to fill out, usually. Several Questions that require reading text. best i can do.
I bet he told the story in a passionate way ... not just reading
I survey participants usually to get a sense of what they're looking for prior to the 1st session.
Q5 I like learning about what is up and coming, especially with edtech always looking for what's next.
NCEA, NCCL, NFCYM, state associations, national organizations
blowing minds of Ts. Best thing ever.
Oh yes - the tech has to work well. Wifi flowing for all : )
A5 Edcamps, My PLN, pro organizations, and twitter are places I learn about things coming up
I like it but tend to get nauseous! A lot of new presentation tools that are better
Now that I said it, you are going to notice this.
2/2 on Friday b4 school start, we demanded tgs & read/discussed among ourselves on Tuesday,
Sharing again: Q5: How do you find PD opportunities that fit your needs as a learner?
Yeah, but remember in John - they couldn't take the message and left!
A5. Networking, google searches, twitter connections, conversations in schools. So many great ways now to find out.
A5: my PLN is a huge help! Books, chats, aps to try.
Prezi reminds me of when people found fancy transitions in PPT.
A5 Be on Social Media! It will find you!
submit the form back- I send the certificate of attending the class. Got idea from a digital session i attended-
A5 is a great tool. Many in my PLN are on it and I can easily ask for help
This is so true! My best pd happens at and ! https://t.co/8pYgphY8su
The power of the is incredible! If you find what fits your needs, your PD world opens up!
and I love hearing what you need in the field for PD! Let us know how NCEA can help you.
Anybody know of a great book on problem solving and not specifically for math??
thats one of the tools I need to really improve- not familiar with it- never heard at college.
A5 Google form asking for Ts PD needs. Search it out, talk other TS/schools
Do you use the custom thank you message in Forms to give a link to the certificate?
My uncle says Jesus=cage-rattler. Good PD (& spiritual thinking)sometimes has to do that!
I got on Voxer over Christmas break, but couldn't find time to keep up w it. Cant do it all.
are you on Voxer? We have a group
Book I am reading reminds us that Jesus was considered radical in his time
Yes, those swirling transitions, migraines in the making https://t.co/mcmlZeHARW
Prezi reminds me of when people found fancy transitions in PPT.
First, give me something that is relevant. Then make it interactive.
I have to try . I still haven't even made an account.
In addition to social media I touch base w/ Ts and discuss their needs. Best PD is differentiated to meet T needs
A5. Regional EdCamps sponsored by the would be great to support PD.
DM me your user name and I'll add you.
No. As I receive, I have a Word Document I make and send. Very simple. Some other places have their own form.
No, but I will check into it. Do you use it regularly?
A5 I find webinars via Twitter and blogs I follow. Geared to exactly my needs, most recently: Blogging, using apps.
Be choosy which groups you join! Nice for small side convos too
give it a go! DM me your name and I'll add you to the group.
Q6: For outside organizations, in-person PD, what events/organizations/etc have you found useful?
This would be awesome! At last edcamp I went to, very, very few Catholic ts present. Sad! https://t.co/OWgb8PDGTv
A5. Regional EdCamps sponsored by the would be great to support PD.
Yes because you can find out when your peers are presenting!
a6
Edcamp, Podstock in Wichita KS, Edtech Team Summits
it goes in spurts! Give it a go, make a free account and DM me your user name.
A5 hoping that CathilicEdCampDVM meets needs of Ts on March 19. Thanks Abbie Greer
A6: my PLN always grows and strengthens after . Looking forward to that! Love workshops
what does the DVM stand for?
A6. Twitter, blogs, books, edcamps, online courses, collaborative courses
A5: is helping me find opportunities now! Also asking great teachers for PDs they have done is very helpful
steps to use in solving problems, how teachers can incorporate more prob solving activities in classes, etc.
thanks for all the insight- case in pt- PD at its best- ts trying new stuff.
Have a great week Time for a haircut!
Anytime! That is what a PLN is for :)
A6: Olweus was good. Also had great PD experiences sponsored by publishers, especially
if want innovative school, need innovative pd! https://t.co/6puHp4VZcc
A1: Our culture must be one that gives permission to step out of that comfort zone, to spark curiosity, to innovate and create.
A5 Twitter has been a game changer in personalized PD
RT Sharing again: Q5: How do you find PD opportunities that fit your needs as a learner?
Sam Parker- Wisconsin. Joining late.
PD is often geared for the less experienced- low performing. Rest- bored!
Delaware, Virginia, Maryland...we are all close enough and do work together
A5: I can thank for introducing me to PLNs but it has changed me. Networking with others is crucial to adapt.
KC Edcamp is June 19. will be in MI for li'l sister's college grad. Bummer to miss out on both.
You can even stay for College World Series baseball!
A6. I love use materials from , Google apps when I can as well. We have a great tech center at SHU I use.
Just watched video...so it's something you have to pay for?
Sounds very exciting to me! Let's talk later!
Lets make it happen! SOunds great.
Me too! I have met some amazing educators!
some people make their own. Their is a Facebook group with lots of sharing of ideas.
A4 reading from PPT that is an essay, instead of the “power points”!
A5 - (joining late from Thunder Bay) Sometimes you have to create the opportunities... connect with PLN find small projects

A7:Twitter is my biggest resource. I enjoy learning new edtech from
has many great resources on a variety of topics
You also need an innovative community. Does a Catholic school need to be within only four walls?
Using Jennifer Serravallo's 300 Reading Strateiges and the Notice and Note books a lot w/ Ts
I keep running headlong into them. Eventually, one of them will crack!
Me too! Love that book! We used it in my masters program.
This is a VERY good idea! We DON’T have to imagine, it’s achievable
Passionate Learners by Pernille Ripp, Reading Power, Writing Power by Adrienne Gear

too many safety and liability issues for that to happen on a consistent basis
Thank you Great chat with lots of interaction. Well done!
