Q1: Explain the difference between inclusion and integration?
Hi! Rich from San Luis Obispo. I work with at-risk teens from various regions of California
Going well. busy with the first few weeks. hopefully settle down in the next...June. maybe settle in june.
A1 the diff between inclusion and integration is inclusion means a part of but integration is a meaningful piece
Hello! Lisa from Pleasanton, CA Im here and there for tonight- multitasking!
Hi Rich! Thanks for coming tonight
first time here :) looking forward to connecting
A1: When you include something you do it, but when you integrate it , you weave it seamlessly throughout the day.
A1: Integration treats Ss as subject or an outsider being brought in. Inclusion looks at big picture & all thru lens of equity.
Welcome ! Glad you can join us!
Hello! Brian from LA. Can't join in tn but wanted to say hi!
You streaming the Phish show in the background too??? :)
A1: Inclusion is a state of personal relationship; it is empathic. Integration is more social, political, cognitive
A1: Inclusion is in the room. Integration is part of the room.
A1: different when talking about students or technology. Include tech in what we already do, integrate to innovate.
Include all students. Integrate all disciplines into curriculum especially those not tested. Art science tech
Gayle from LA, happy to join.
A1 - inclusion allows for the greatest number of learners to excel. It feels seamless & full of happiness https://t.co/jPj9ZlSww9
Thanks for joining us tonight, Kevin. Always a pleasue to have you around
we, including , have been back since the 18th. I've actually been back since the 1st.

Curious RE:
+why it's being discussed the 3rd week of School.
EduConsultant. 🍎T
who hasn't begun the SchoolYr
A1) inc = putting ppl into a shared culture. Int = putting ppl into a bigger culture
A1: Inclusion is strengths-based & celebrates variability of ALL learners. Integration focuses on weaknesses.
A1:Inclusion=making everyone feel like their voice is heard and Ss matter. Integration=art of creating learning experiences
A1 As I see it, inclusion actively attempts to involve everyone in the same ways. Integration just places us closer together.
Also waiting for:
1️⃣Paperwork to clear
2️⃣Other Jobs I've applied to

3️⃣Mayor of London (PoliticalAsylum).
I like that. Integration works from deficit model where the individual lacks a commonality https://t.co/qva7JkhPuO
A1: Inclusion is strengths-based & celebrates variability of ALL learners. Integration focuses on weaknesses.
I like this explanation-- was having a hard time finding the words
I think it's an evergreen topic.
Yes! ALL LEARNERS! Love this! https://t.co/w4sfxMjrNO
A1: Inclusion is strengths-based & celebrates variability of ALL learners. Integration focuses on weaknesses.
So excited to know that are at the same school! Hope you can come to on 10/1
A1: Inclusion values differences, integration tries to be one-size fits all.
Sorry just got into hotel. Presenting in Costa Mesa tomorrow Excited to say hi to CA friends Dir. of Instruct Tech in MO
A1: I feel we can include a student in learning or integrate their voice in the learning experience.
We’ll be there! Can’t wait!
-----------------> Q2 is up next. Watch for
I’ve been using the word “experiences” more and more, rather than lessons, tasks, etc. More meaningful focus.
Q2: What methods do you use to include all students in an environment where they feel safe?
Yes—an excellent point! https://t.co/K7M6hHOjRB
A1: Inclusion values differences, integration tries to be one-size fits all.
My first ! Kirstin, 4th grade teacher from Ladera Ranch, CA
An experience is a far higher bar too!
Thanks for joining us tonight! Welcome!
Welcome! It moves fast, but you can learn a lot!
So true! https://t.co/voPFTVawjs
I’ve been using the word “experiences” more and more, rather than lessons, tasks, etc. More meaningful focus.
Q2 Responsive classroom, differentiation, morning meeting all promote inclusion.
A2: Strengths-based cultures teach students to value variability of ALL learners. Allow opportunity for student voice, choice.
Welcome ! Glad to have you join us tonight!
No WAY! Have a good presentation tomorrow! I'll be down the street in Tustin
A2: Team-building! Team-building! Team-building! https://t.co/wGPTaGe9lm
Q2: What methods do you use to include all students in an environment where they feel safe?
. Yes - I was late to the party...had to put the kiddos to bed. 1st day of school for them tomorrow!
A2: A well-moderated, democratic culture of writing-backed discussion. It takes time and discipline to create & sustain.
Students are included when their are quality relationships and the safety of a positive culture Expected behaviors taught, praised
A2 True inclusion should involve empathy and building EQ within the community, e.g., ability to disagree productively.
Nicely said-- i would definitely agree with this
A1:Inclusion=provide access for all students. How can you reach every learner? Integration=technology integration-use to include!
A2: creating a climate of where we embrace failure as a just a step in learning - creates a safe place to land when we fall
I swear I didn’t see 2nites Qs b4 finishing my blog. I wrote all ab building trust & cult. resp. tchmg. https://t.co/FMa1pMlpMq
A2: Very little happens w/o building relationships. This is key for all ss to feel valued & for an inclusive culture.
A2: Build culture every minute of every day. Relationships first.
Welcome to the team, and - have a great first chat!
Brilliant, Moss https://t.co/oHZXJhBixN
A2 True inclusion should involve empathy and building EQ within the community, e.g., ability to disagree productively.
A2: Providing space for 'quiet' students to be loud and share/collaborate- like Padlet, Backchannels, Collab docs
yes, we want to build trust in order to understand our students first
A1:
Inclusion: Whole Group Instruction
Integration: Differentiation
A2:Growth Mindset & reminding Ss we are all amazing at something. Creating a culture where we learn and grow together.
A2: create an environment where there is no such thing as a wrong answer, but that every answer is a step to the correct one.
A2: Important to see diff. between trust between T & S and between Ss. Takes 2 intentionally diff. approaches.
Thanks! Now time to put it to practice!
exactly - relationships are the key to everything!
A2) I make sure all my students know each other and work with each other regularly.
A2: I use positive restatements of what they have said. I affirm the student, I listen & I ask them to tell me more.
Hi Kathy here from Upland. Lurking from the sidelines tonight.
Gratias! And I hope you’re well in the meantime!
yes that should be a starting point, failure leads creates new opportunities for learning
I couldn't agree more. Inclusion is teaching people first, content second. Relationships matter.
Hi Kathy! Great to see you tonight
Yes! Listening and tell me more- love it!
I teach kinder and that is my first priority, building relationships with Ss
Indeed! Trust is another key ingredient, I think.
maybe we can meet up I have Wednesday mostly free. I leave late Thursday night.
so true! and in some climates much more challenging between Ss!
-----------------> Q3 is set. Watch for
Q3: Why is it important to give Ss time to adapt to new learning environments?
A2: Value every participation and be willing to take back seat to the courage students display when speaking.
A2: 3rdGr Management Techniques.
iConsult. (Something about that particular School Yr is very SEL +. LifeSpan Psych compliant.)
Hi new to Kerstin from WI. A2: I make it a priority to know all their names. Build a relationship and trust!
A3 because it's new!The expectations are different - the people are different Ss are human we have to feel out the new space first
A3: They need time to learn about new expectations. provides daily support.
A2:I try to personalize lrning experiences for Ss, provide choice, focus on classrm culture
A3: Rather than starting the 'standards race' wouldnt it be great to spend time building community/routines/critical thinking
A2: Provide variety of choices for Ss to display their thinking. Model patience and respect. Teach Ss that it's okay to not know!
A3: Ss need time to build their confidence and build their own relationships with peers and Ts
Welcome ! I agree, building relationships and trust is a must! https://t.co/Wl9UpPkMhe
Hi new to Kerstin from WI. A2: I make it a priority to know all their names. Build a relationship and trust!
A3: In HS I see a lot of resiliency in Ss as they interact with diff. Ts. In AVID we talk about strategies to deal w/ this.
A3: Regular adults need adjustment time... kids need it as well... Esp. kids with special needs https://t.co/QKHACPVcGx
Q3: Why is it important to give Ss time to adapt to new learning environments?
A3: We have a newcomers academy and many students have either never been to school before or school in the US is very different.
A3 In adapting to change is where the real learning occurs, especially when we (un)learn through difference.
Yes!! Learning will come at ease when trust and love are in place! https://t.co/Yxa4b9ogsc
A3: Rather than starting the 'standards race' wouldnt it be great to spend time building community/routines/critical thinking
A3: Time is required to absorb info, to reflect, to form connections, and to activate new learning schema.
A3: Wait time... Give students a chance to buy in and trust. Trust takes time.
A3: Spent a lot of the first 2 weeks of school on building community and mutual respect. Students > standards.
Prayer break. It's Maghrib.
And kids are praying so iFeel guilty being on . (I'm supposed to be a 🕌Scholar, too.)😬🍎
A3: Take the time to build a solid foundation of trust on which to build collaborative culture.
A3: new learning environments demand extraneous cognitive demands . The goal is germane cognitive loads
Love this- I worry about projecting the race to get through curriculum in the beginning of the yr-
-----------------> Q4 is coming very soon. Look for tweet!
New MHE materials have 2-3 weeks of start smart to learn routines
Q4: How do you create a shared respect for diversity in your classroom?
A4: Embrace student differences and discuss them. Be culturally responsive...LEARN your students and make lessons relevant to them
I concur. I would spend 2 weeks doing theatre games, etc to get them comfortable before I put them onstage
A4 by not shying away from it - celebrate it instead.
A3) It takes time to adapt to any new environment. I don't feel at home in my own home until I've had time to settle in.
is there a favorite activity you do to encourage celebrating their diversity?
A4: By celebrating differences. We talk about celebrating diversity & how great it is to have Ss from many different cultures.
By presenting a responsive curriculum where students have choice and voice
A4: You’ve got to represent & honor diversity (lit, history, scholars, etc) -across curricular areas.
A4: Celebrate diversity by focusing on student strengths rather than deficits. Model respect for ALL learners.
Find a way to validate and celebrate points of view. Construct truth from your Ss' points of view, not the book. Often Similar.
A4: Ss should see themselves in books, videos, articles. Search for diverse resources and perspectives for lessons-more than 1side
Yes! help them find a comfort zone! Embrace differences!
A4 We cultivate what we celebrate, so celebrate different modes of thinking as much as possible. Create new rituals around them.
A4: Respect for diversity has to be framed in terms of empathy. It is based on respect for others and the golden rule
, tells me you have this AMAZING multicultural event every year on ur campus. Sounds gr8!
Diversity has many meanings in the classroom: Ss learn differently, its about REsPECt!!!!
Yep. Model what you want to see in others.
A3, Time to adapt, allows students the mentally transition & prepare their brain to learn. https://t.co/ivwFYfYhrG
Q3: Why is it important to give Ss time to adapt to new learning environments?
Love this celebrate creativity and new ways of thinking!
https://t.co/KsFiXpnjjE
A4 We cultivate what we celebrate, so celebrate different modes of thinking as much as possible. Create new rituals around them.
A4:Celebrate S differences, help Ss lrn abt each other, and common msgs district-wide tch Ss about respecting one another
A4: Teach Privilege; Listen to your students and encourage them to do the same. https://t.co/Ndj4NpatPL
Q4: How do you create a shared respect for diversity in your classroom?
A5: Create a class constitution with students. We agree together on class norms and procedures. Share S and T goals for the year
A:4 ReSpECt and its about teachers modeling those behaviors.
A4- by modelling a curriculum that celebrates different strengths and one that has humour. Build room of trust and fun!
A4 Must also emphasize and celebrate diversity as a faculty/staff as a model for entire community.
Ditto! And always loved having parents come in to teach us about their families' cultures https://t.co/mriUz6Zyj7
A4: By celebrating differences. We talk about celebrating diversity & how great it is to have Ss from many different cultures.
I did a class consitution my first year - a 7/8 combo was the best thing ever! Deconstructed the US consitution
Identity Day is a good way. Also through diverse lit/stories.
yes this is what they love, when they see someone that looks like them
Yes! And extend the celebration throughout the entire district and local community!
A4: You and the kids may never always agree, but they need to understand how to deal with that peacefully https://t.co/Ndj4NpatPL
Q4: How do you create a shared respect for diversity in your classroom?
It is important to meet students where they are in the classroom. Can't control outside. Help them find their strengths
A4- you allow Ss and Ts to be themselves and celebrate the differences in a positive way. Encourage each other
A4: call it out when diversity isn't tolerated by subtle deficit perspectives of Ss
A4: Scroll through your YouTube playlists and make sure your visual media promotes diversity.
A4) In ESL you get lots of opportunity to share about different cultures. Love class just for that reason.
It gets better every yr. This yr we hv Ss from Lithuania & Syria as well as indigenous people from Mexico.
A2, Use a variety of flexible grouping structures, heterogeneous, homogeneous, and jigsawing https://t.co/b86cV82eRt
Q2: What methods do you use to include all students in an environment where they feel safe?
-----------------> Q5 is up next. Look for tweet!
A4: We make essential agreements and teach the IB Learner Profile and IB Attitudes
A4:Bring the outside in with GHO and Skypes in the classroom. Let Ss connect with others from their culture or backgrnd.
A4: Conversations and communication break down barriers... They/you need to have them early and often https://t.co/Ndj4NpatPL
Q4: How do you create a shared respect for diversity in your classroom?
Yes, Treat each other the way you want to be treated is a cornerstone at our school.
Q5: What are your go-to activities for building teamwork and collaboration amongst all students?
It shouldn't be either or, don't u think? Like concentric⭕️🔘circles interlapping. But👍🏼 - priority 1st 2weeks!
I love the new student standards have Global Collaboration strand. Included in our Elem Tech Curriculum
Understanding 'place' around the world is a huge eye opener for Ss We have tools to take them-now connect w People!
A5 In the past, it’s been a gratitude practice, where we take turns sharing what we’re grateful to build community positively.
A5 This year we started with AVID's Successful Student and then I adapted it to "Successful Teams" to get the conversation started
A5: Develop shared norms, , STEAM challenges build teamwork & collaboration.
I like this. Not about agreeing but about understanding. https://t.co/ESedhwxMqG
A4: You and the kids may never always agree, but they need to understand how to deal with that peacefully https://t.co/Ndj4NpatPL
Q4: How do you create a shared respect for diversity in your classroom?
A4: Be direct about it as well, don't try to trick them... create an atmosphere of authenticity... https://t.co/Ndj4NpatPL
Q4: How do you create a shared respect for diversity in your classroom?
A5 - I started the year with marshmallow challenge and worked on teamwork with each lab and changed them each month
A5 This year, I’m looking forward to our civic engagement program that will challenge all of us to think about community problems.
Hello Moss representing...
We have several ice breakers from ropes-course trainings that are awesome. https://t.co/1sPhg2AKVd
Q5: What are your go-to activities for building teamwork and collaboration amongst all students?
Teaching Ss and Ts empathy is an essential 21st skill . Love using the Arts and Global Collaboration to help achieve this.
A5: Collaboration begins with a framework & pedagogical choices based on problem solving. Ss need to practice diff. roles.
I take my ss to a ropes course/zip line. We’re fortunate to be able to do that - such a great experience.
A5: Trivia Review Games, team strategic challenges... Get them thinking out loud and moving https://t.co/tcIxR6NpiK
Q5: What are your go-to activities for building teamwork and collaboration amongst all students?
A5 BreakoutEDU games are a great way to build teamwork and collaboration. Plus playing Mystery Location games with Hangouts.
where do you teach that you get to zipline? How do I work there? ;-)
A5- love really making fun of myself in the first week. I'll be the donkey of the "poker room" known as our classroom.
A5 Also excited to work in ISG (interdepartmental study groups) in lieu of tradl faculty meetings. Should greatly impact students.
I'm certainly not opposed to diversity, but at what point does celebrating diversity end and diversity becomes normal?
A5: I have Ss collaborate on projects. Mainstay tools are Google Docs, Slides.
A5: Starting w a video everyday can connect a class-from humor to empathy-->metacoging over ideas connects ppl
A5: Anything that requires talking and collective problem solving.
Good evening, Shabana! Thanks for representing!
Please share your amazing youtube channel!
A5: Climbing wall, obstacle course, & hikes are among activities that help our Ss break ice & face shared challenges.
A great resource! Bookmarking for next year :)
Yes! It’s a program we’re building internally, and we’re very excited to see how it evolves.
iHave a brother.
He's an MD ➕an MpH. iKnow😬🍎
He Subbed🍎when he got back from MedSchool.💭🤔 if he could do that in LA
Lol - a new three-level course w/ 3 zip lines opened at Lopez Lake - ss make their own challenge.
A5:My favorite tasks 4developing a collaborative culture were engineering challenges-- spaghetti tower, marshmallow, earthquake
I can't believe I STILL haven't had a chance to try a breakoutedu - gotta try!
You can still use these games all throughout the year. Teamwork needs regular practice!
A5: Ice-breakers, games, collaborative conversations, scavenger hunts, name games, get to know you activities, etc.
A5 Make sure collaborative activities have structure and authentic interdependence
A great question! In all of human history, however, this has never happened.
seriously? Can I go back in time and be a student there?
Trying 's Digital Citizen one tomorrow. :)
iWas referring to you. CueLosAngeles. That's impt here.
Some things iUnderstand.
Mostly thanks to our subconscious biases. It’s one thing to celebrate, but quite another to rid bias altogether.
A5 Teach improv! It breaks the ice and requires others to practice "Yes and..."
A5 I have to give another shout out to Responsive Classrooms.
---------------------> Prepare for Q6 from
Q6: How do you continue to support students who still struggle finding their place in your classroom community?
Yes! Drama activities are great too! We tend to work with lego challenges. (and hello CA friends)
A6: LEARN THEIR NAME. Find them in the halls, around school, make sure they know you see them and value them.
A6 It is very difficult to watch some Ss struggle to feel part of the community. We have a social worker who I seek help from
Will do! We plan to reflect early and often, and I’ll be sure to share.
A6: Targeted group differentiated instruction. No kids can hide from Mr. Rynk
their work is priceless, they can help us when all else fails
A6: Opening your room at recess & lunch can give those ss a place. Others start coming, soon it’s a hangout.
A6: Allow them to express themselves by choosing to do a project of something they love and feel passionate about. They’ll shine.
A6 be there! Be present! Learn your kids! they may or may not come around - but being there no matter what builds trust
A5 - Ss created cardboard games for Ps at B2S + & had the Ss write notes for Ps to break-into https://t.co/UEYmCzbJOG
We are so fortunate to have a 100% social worker this year. All schools should have this amazing resource.
A6 No easy answer, I fear. Start by talking to them and actively listen to what they have to say.
YES. Love the unplanned lunch conversations!
A6- they haven't "yet" found their spot. Together you need to highlight strength.
A7 start by championing one peer relationship at a time. Talk w family. Seek ideas from other teachers.
I like the subversive tactic of being the culture -celebrating seems 2 acknowledge lack of diversity. Celebrating exposes rarity
Some students really need a quieter place to eat lunch and hang out.
A6 Support students who need support with making friends, working with others. Instil we all have something to add/are important
It is not the one time thing, but the consistent message that builds trust and shows you care.
A6: Find ways to empower them.Let Ss share about their passions.Teach the class something (anything) new!
A6: We have aide support and we have a learning center for small group work. We also have a safe place to take a break if needed.
15 mins until chat - hang around after
We have one too. What an amazing resource. We also have an Outreach Consultant. So fortunate.
A6: I find them study partners, connect with them after class, call home to find out more information... https://t.co/2tYtmE47RK
Q6: How do you continue to support students who still struggle finding their place in your classroom community?
Plus, selfishly, those conversations can often be highlights of the day for me :)
A6 Read Wonder aloud to the class. So many lessons about "hidden" students.
A6:Listening before req compliance! We should spend more time understanding their needs, than we do 'managing' them w systems!
A6 start by championing one peer relationship at a time. Look for allies. Talk w family. Seek ideas from other teachers.
A6: Strategically create groups within the classroom. Where will this student thrive? Be there for your students always.
That is a new one. A good one though.
https://t.co/MLHlAnp6Yp
A6: You don't give up! Try and try again.. Find their story and help them grow.. https://t.co/Gi5gb0LHh4
Q6: How do you continue to support students who still struggle finding their place in your classroom community?
Or the biggest belly laughs of the day
I like subversive tactic of being culture-celebrating seems 2 acknowledge lack of diversity. Celebrating exposes rarity
YES. Understanding before managing.
A6: Learning & human development are journeys, not destinations. We all dance to beat of a different drummer.
The same can be done on the basketball or tetherball court. I love recess.
I get a lot of street cred when I join the soccer game. :)
A6: Also why do they "struggle"... Is it cognitive, emotional, or social? Find that out and fix it https://t.co/2tYtmE47RK
Q6: How do you continue to support students who still struggle finding their place in your classroom community?
Good point. Depends on how we define “celebrate.” Has to be more than bulletin boards.
A6: get to know them. Use their interests intentionally.
A6:Let kids PLAY- sometimes it’s the only place they feel SAFE and then build from there.
A6) Using an LMS can be a great way for Ss to get used to each other at their own pace
We have our inside area open at recess/lunch so kids can play board games together. Brings like kids together
that’s so amazing, an opportunity to make a small difference in a Ss lives
--------------------> will be sending out Q7 soon.
A6 Best moment of last year was when one of our Ss who struggle socially became the hero in our breakoutedu game.
Q7: What are the tools/apps/resources that you use to support inclusion in the classroom?
I am fading fast my midwest internal clock says it is 11 pm even though my watch says 9pm. Thanks for a great chat CA friends
What an unforgettable memory for that kiddo! So wonderful. https://t.co/7thsCEwlBx
A6 Best moment of last year was when one of our Ss who struggle socially became the hero in our breakoutedu game.
improv games can be a great and inclusive tool!
A7 Honestly, technology plays a big role in helping all of our Ss access what they need to feel successful. This is a BIG step.
Thanks for joining us tonight, Nick!
A7: Google docs for sure for students to share and edit work and for teacher collaboration and necessary modifications to work
When I ran ELD program, my room was open every lunch. It was a safe space with many conversations
It is easy to eat and check phone during breaks but if you want trust and risk taking build relationships by being outside.
A7 all students feel success differently... design a lot of different learning experiences so everyone can find their "element"
A6: Ps involvement.
Socially: Model inclusive behaviors i.e. Asking a group of girls to play.
Academically: Seek fitting options.
A7: Eye contact, Learn names, Shake hands. beyond that, be the champion of ideas and constructive participation. Nothing Special.
A7) This year we're on . I also enjoy opening up a backchannel w/
A7: Allow choices for differentiation. Apps/websites are not one size fits all
A7 I love teaching my students photography, this allows them to showcase their creativity and share with peers
Signing out for the night! First day of school tomorrow. Looking forward to making a difference with Ss and their families.
A7 As a special needs P and educator: Teaching Tolerance, Responsive Classroom, improv, social stories, Circle of Friends
A7 As a group we work hard to instil a culture of kindness. Even when upset, be kind! Filters into everything! Respect is key.
Thank you so much ! Great chat tonight. You ROCKED it! Here's to many more
A7: Love creating using Google My Maps for sharing place based stories-powerful way to connect
A7 by using a variety of apps inclusion happens naturally - last yr my Ss was 7 yrs behind in reading turned out 2b best at coding
A6, Sometimes Ss need social skills coaching. Provide quick 1-on-1 conferences and then prompt & practice. https://t.co/YPHdLUMxuN
Q6: How do you continue to support students who still struggle finding their place in your classroom community?
I've found that simply being aware of the apps/channels my students use has helped...
Thank you for the great chat tonight. Always a pleasure to walk among giants in a field where we all share a passion.
computer science empowers all Ss
Love conferences. Ss value the time you spend with them and see that you care when that time is 1-on-1 https://t.co/Hei3vatGN9
A6, Sometimes Ss need social skills coaching. Provide quick 1-on-1 conferences and then prompt & practice. https://t.co/YPHdLUMxuN
Q6: How do you continue to support students who still struggle finding their place in your classroom community?
A7 great book for teaching inclusion w autism: I Love Being My Own Autistic Self
A7- love for building relationships. Let kids chat after school on safe platform. Talk at home equals talking at school.
Agreed! Looking forward to an exciting new season on !
... A challenge...how will you and the chance you have to impact a child. Until next week...
A7: SpeakIt! Chrome extension to read text aloud. Online virtual manipulatives. LearnZillion for reteaching. MobyMax for practice
A7 my maps and google maps allow Ss to travel to so many places as they build empathy and understanding
