Hello everyone. Before we get to chatting tonight I'd like to invite you to #bettertogetherCA's chat in a couple of weeks. We will be talking about #PBL and I would love to have some veteran voices. Hope you can join. #PBLchat
A1: Digital equity can mean two things to me:
1-all students having access to technology and tools
2-students have the ability to have equitable experiences through technology
#PBLchat
A1: Making sure that all students have equal access to the technology they need to learn and develop their #digitallearning and #digcit skills #PBLchat
Q1: Providing access to and support for all students in a digital learning environment: type of tech, availability of tech, software and supports within software, .... #pblchat
#pblchat A1. Digital equity is ensuring all students have the SAME access to technology (including internet) for educational purposes. This includes students whose families do not have access to internet.
My Digital Divide - Digital Equity page https://t.co/5HAWOWdVVc#pblchat#Edchat#edtechchat We need to find ways to make sure students have access to technology for educational purposes and learning.
A1: Making sure that all students have equal access to the technology they need to learn and develop their #digitallearning and #digcit skills #PBLchat
A1: Digital equity means to me that every student has access and opportunity to use technology. In today's day and age, this could just mean access to WiFi! #pblchat
A1: And I would also include the teacher knowledge base in using and leveraging instruction through tech. It's not just about having the devices and access. #PBLchat
I would push a bit I think and say "if it's EXPECTED to be used as a learning tool outside of the classroom, then we definitely need to think about access." #pblchat

I'm on our School Council & we are asking for Chromebooks for all Ss 😀 Staff PD early this month offered Google workshops! Fabulous day of learning for our Ss by Ts! #pblchat
I've heard that somewhere before too (not sure of exact research though). For me, it's about "most" students vs "all" students. If we're talking about digital equity...we have to talk about "all" students thriving in the digital environment. (At least I do) :) #pblchat
A2)The economic status of the area can determines students access to technology in the home. I have had multiple Ss who have no internet access #pblchat
A2: In #UrbanEd schools, digital equity is an issue. Not all Ss have access to the technology they need to complete digital learning activities in their own homes. #pblchat
A2) In our district, there are Ss w/o access to high speed internet. So Ts who flip have to provide alternatives such as a flash drive. Public WIFI isn't always an option when you live 20 mi from town. #pblchat
Interesting point about inequities not only in terms of access but also in use. Lack of teacher training, I could see resulting in inequities. #pblchat
A2: In the school district where I am student teaching, the economic status for all students is the biggest impact. Some students have access to a computer and others do not, so my mentor teacher does not assign online assignments. #pblchat
#pblchat We teach in an area where parents borrow their kid's school laptop to pay bills and to do their own homework. It's challenging to promote digital equity in the classroom when it is the entire neighborhood who needs it.
A2: I'm in the heart of silicon valley. 98% of my stduents have access at home in a variety of devices. The 2% that don't have access after school in our classrooms. Our "problem" is really that parents still take tech away as punishment. #PBLchat
A2: We live in a boundary that has high turnover of Ss. In 3rd grade this year we have had over 20 Ss move in/out. Our neighborhoods are families that are new to the country or move from apartment to apartment. They don't always have the means for technology or Wi-Fi. #PBLchat
Sounds like a great opportunity to use digital tools to support awareness and access and support for all students in making community connections! :) I wonder who your digital "towns" might be? Who would make those up? #pblchat
At NTN, we now have a different web conferencing system for a similar reason. If we wanted our adult learners to have virtual access to us (and to each other) w/out the barrier of "no internet connectivity", we had to find a software to remove that barrier. #pblchat#zoom
Makes me wonder how many teachers do that too. Equitable learning (support for all students, every day) also means educating our students to be effective digital citizens...not just expecting it. I wonder how we educate staff, Sds, AND parents? #pblchat

If we start planning from a mindset of, "here's a lesson I have & want to use" followed by "what potential barriers might exist for Sds if I do this lesson?" & then, "what options can I offer to overcome those barriers", perhaps we can be proactive vs reactive here too. #pblchat
Interesting point about inequities not only in terms of access but also in use. Lack of teacher training, I could see resulting in inequities. #pblchat
For sure. Parents have the tech access under their control. No one would say "put that textbook" away, but they are quick to limit access at home. I do not blame them, but it is something to consider. #PBLchat
Exactly what I see too. Some of our towns are more affluent. I will say, our Ss are really good at sharing/pairing up with their personal tech (video making etc) when working on projects! Nice to see! #pblchat
Love this idea! We have an Echo guide for parents. But it makes me think we could do so much more! #pblchat@LindseyLRisner I'm sure you have the time, right? ;)
We've talked about this as well! One of our awesome Ts, my good friend @daleyscience offered after school tech/app learning for Ss & Ts recently! #pblchat
A3: Yes. Part of what we've been discussing. Although not everything has to be tech, we (Ts) have to be flexible enough to learn and adapt to this changing environment. If the Ss says I want to use (tech tool) the answer should be yes. #PBLchat
A3: I would imagine if a teacher isn't comfortable with technology, then they probably don't integrate it into the classroom as much. Another supporting point about the need for training throughout every level of the school community #pblchat
A3) YES!!! Ss get conflicting classroom norms when one teacher is using technology the right way and other teachers refuse to get with the times. Ss should expect to be using technology in all classes so that it comes second nature to them. #pblchat
Depends on the situation. It does not create the inequality but nor does it help Ss master the tech. 1st Q would be, can tech be of use in this lesson or class in creating richer learning? #pblchat
A3: Schools that have a vision for digital equity would share a professional responsibility with all their teachers to assure that there are no "low tech teachers". Everyone is required to be competent in the tools. #pblchat
A3 We're all learning together! I think it's awesome! Ss are great at teaching peers & quick to assist us if we have a tech question they can answer! #pblchat
A3: Absolutely. We are very fortunate to be in a district that is 1:1 in grades 3-12. As we have seen Ss come to us from different schools, they only use their devices 1/week! We have to create an environment for Low Tech Teachers to become daily users! #PDRevolution#PBLchat
A2: our district does Booster Paks every Friday with some food essentials for weekend w/ outside organization. Currently investigating sending some with WiFi hotspots and providing free internet service in part of the city #PBLchat
Yes, "voice and choice." And sometimes Ss get wrapped up in the tech, not the problem/question they are solving, so becomes counterproductive. #PBLchat
A3) Sometimes a low-tech set up encourages kids to find tech solutions on their own. Digital inequality can also happen by using good tech poorly. #pblchat
ditto to "competent in the outcomes expected of students" (such that we increasingly see "digital literacy" showing up as an outcome in schools too). But the support of teachers is so critical! @LeahRossHenry put it best in saying"You can't expect what you don't express" #pblchat

I think there is a difference between low tech PBL and a low tech teacher. Low tech PBL is purposely low tech, while low tech teachers are mostly stubborn #pblchat
"kids finding solutions", eh?! Sounds like a great foundation for an inquiry-based style of learning. Hmm... we shall call it, "Project Based Learning" 😉😅 #pblchat
#pblchat The most non-threatening approach to teach a low-tech teachers new tricks is to have students teach them. Students lead the workshops! #pblchat
I purposely never use the word "presentation" because it used to lead to opening Gslides on launch day. "What are you putting there, who knows but I have a slide deck!" :) #PBLchat

This makes me think about the Compass of Shame(shared w/ me by @randidowns45). It's also important to recognize how teachers might deal with the shame of not knowing how to use the tech. Get to know their way of being to offer best support. #pblchathttps://t.co/UhVcc0N9BC
Reading text, physically operating the tech, keeping up with the pacing. Google Add-ons & Extensions do wonders. Often times, there are lending libraries that help with very high tech needs. #pblchat

A4: UDL (Universal Design for Learning) enables better customization of technology for students with disabilities. Implementation needs to be planned carefully with IEP goals and the curriculum in mind. #pblchat
A4) Kids can get discouraged and disengaged if they feel left out & what further complicates the issue is kids with struggles that aren’t yet identified. Ts need knowledge of tech AND responsiveness to S’s needs. #pblchat
A4 we just learned about some awesome Google tools from @cterrillteach who facilitated at our recent PD! I am new at the Google tools & would need to check the notes to relate exact tools. Looking forward to applying knowledge! #pblchat
A4: Lack of access/knowledge about the tools available for people with disabilities. For example, chrome extensions such as Read&Write for Google chrome https://t.co/8H6IkzxBsI or Rewordify https://t.co/0UZvobGya7#PBLchat
AAAAAMEN!!! (And I've always thought of every student having an Indiv. Educ. Plan, which is why I love UDL principles for supporting instruction for every student, every day.... i.e. equitably.) #pblchat
Q5: Most third graders don't bring their phones into the classroom or have a phone. I can only work off of assumption here...It seems to take a point of access away that students are familiar with and know how to work effectively to their advantage. #PBLchat

#pblchat A4: Pacing could be a hurdle for students with disabilities. We often yell out instructions on how to navigate an online tool/resource forgetting that some of our students need to READ directions or work slower than other students.
A5: No Cell phone policies have to change, IMO. "I am asking you to create a product, you chose to create a video, and I do not have video cameras available, of course you can use your phone!" #PBLchat
A5) Unfortunately, it’s an easy way out of teaching kids responsibility & helping them become professionals that understand social & cultural norms for engaging with people in real life. #pblchat
A5) when students can’t afford to fix the 1:1 computers provided by district sometimes cellphones are the only way they can actually use the tech they need. #pblchat
I've been to many UDL workshops just for #SpEd teachers. It didn't make any sense to not to include gen ed teachers as they would benefit the most from UDL in their classrooms. #pblchat
A5) I use my cell phone as a professional tool all day long (staff comm, email, calendar), so why would I not help students develop the same skills? #pblchat
A6: There needs to be a #PDRevolution for teachers who are "Low Tech". Community partnerships can help us solve some inequities around WiFi at home for our Ss. How can I better advocate for my learners and teach them to advocate for themselves once they leave my room? #PBLChat
That wasn't the kind of cheat I was thinking of. We had an issue in a local high school where kids took photos of final exams and shared them with other students. #PBLchat
