Thinking about tonight's #sblchat
If we're positive, energetic, passionate, present, engaging, distraction-free, and consistent, might we better be able to expect those behaviors from our Learners? Just saying...
Just had a soccer team come into our local McDonald’s for a #McHappyDay snack on their way home - got lots of waves since our balloons matched their jerseys!! #sblchat
A1 - Since we're aiming to make grades more meaningful and based solely on proficiency of our Learning Targets, we suggest behaviors be reported separately. Praise publicly and correct in private. #Respect#sblchat
A1 last I checked, most/all learning outcomes don’t add (if polite. nor in a good mood. not even “happy to be at school”) behaviours don’t = learning #sblchat
A1 While behaviors do impact grades, they should be separated out since we want to communicate exactly what the Ss know related to set standards #sblchat
A1 - Grades/academic
proficiencies should reflect what a student knows and is able to do... Behaviors are separate from these. Still important to foster and grow, but separately. #sblchat
A1. While behaviors can influence academics (like not studying for a test), behavior doesn’t measure what skills or knowledge the student has actually attained. #sblchat
Great point about the feedback on each of them being powerful. Behaviors aren't unimportant - they just don't belong lumped in with academic proficiency. #sblchat
Even when our Learners do not prepare appropriately for a test, let's make sure to offer then 2nd, 3rd, and 4th opportunities since Learning Matters! #sblchat

I’m still trying to figure out a great way to document descriptive feedback in a respectful way - doesn’t feel right to say “yay - no hands on for two weeks!” Even when that’s great - likewise I don’t want to video bad choices as archival evidence #sblchat
A2 - In our #1st5Days, our Learners help determine or unpack reasonable behavioral expectations that foster learning, growth, and motivating engagement. Stop with too many rules. #sblchat#COLchat

A2: By setting up class norms with students. They set the expectations for the class and what happens when they don't meet those expectations. (Thank you @garnet_hillman and @KatieBudrow ) #sblchat
A2 My district reports out on four characteristics, called Habits of Success. These are analyzed with students to determine what each means and what they could look like. #sblchat
A2 Model what you want to see in your Ss. Craft the norms together, provide examples, praise the good, correct the bad, but most important practice what you preach #sblchat
I know my learners get better mileage out of our discussions and written descriptive feedback than if I used ✔️s Xs #s and letter grades.... timely and meaningful make it relevant! #sblchat

Huge fan of norms! They’re deliberate & purposeful, and easy to revisit. We often build (fun) class sayings around them to empower our use of them. #sblchat

A2 - Happy for the suggestions here. We have been using work quality and participation, but are finding them lacking. I will be building a rubric with my 7th graders re: expectations for each. They are able to articulate what good learner behavior looks like. #sblchat

A2 model and discuss the positives (not always a list of “Donts & No ....”) talking about the “why” matters - even if it takes multiple times - especially if it takes multiple times #sblchat

Yes!! Gotta walk the talk - if no hats for students, same for adults. If no phones on class for students....not for the adults too - different rules loses trust #Sblchat

A3 - We currently report on participation, effort, engagement in learning, as well as conscientiousness and perseverance. HS Math is ruthlessly cumulative. #sblchat
A3: Still working this out. I wasn't happy with it this year. Ones that create a positive atmosphere for all learners ans foster ownership of individual learning...#sblchat
A3 Our habits are perseverance, respect, following directions, and quality/timely work. Though I’m trying to think of what I would design if the decision where solely mine ... #sblchat

A3 depends on the child....but aggression (hitting or threatening) avoidance (to see if this is a trend elsewhere) positives (to see if this is a trend elsewhere) and really: any time the baseline changes +be or -ve #sblchat
We actually have a responsibility rubric score. Covers bringing materials, standard in class behaviors about productive work, treatment of others, missing work, participation...all in 1 box, not separate. #sblchat
A3 There are a lot to choose from. I take Marzano's strands, but I have seen some T's craft the behaviors of "successful Ss" with the class then that's what they report on #sblchat
A3: I try to focus on transferable habits, behaviors that are universally needed and can often be consistently improved upon with practice/experiences. Such as time management & self advocacy. #sblchat
Wait...cluing in that we are talking about global formal reporting - I was thinking about reporting/sharing with school & home supports in an ongoing process (my efolio brain) not just 3-5 times a year. 😇 #sblchat
A4 - We choose NOT to report on "late learning", misunderstandings, one time communication mishaps, or happenings on challenging days. We focus on and report on the journey of learning. #sblchat

Yeah - worked on a committee regarding Creativity. “They” wanted us to determine language like “by grade 3 students will show creativity by...” we laughed and gave them back sequential circles to highlight how creativity is not linear! #sblchat
Can you tell me how to accurately capture any of them? For example, effort is so hard to determine if you aren't that individual person doing the work. I can make a judgement on how much effort I think you put in, but it's very subjective. :) Make sense? #sblchat
“Effort” is so weird. Some kids have to do more to do the same as others - marks/hours invested? Some need more time some less. Sometimes the kid staring at you and nodding has no idea what’s happening and the kid staring out the window is fully engaged - too subjective #sblchat
A4 - Speaking of "behaviors", our Learners asked us this week to call on Learners in a random fashion, not just those waving their hands. They siad it. #sblchat
Not to mention possible parental intervention. I’ve offered to do my kids homework but they keep declining worries I might impact their “game of school” scores (I don’t use scores) so I assist where/as requested -if it’s sent home every resource is available #sblchat
Even Alexa
See if you can make the switch to perseverance. Does the kid give up when the work gets hard or do they push through? Related to effort (just like producing quality work) but not the same. #sblchat
A5 - Due to the respect we foster in our learning environment, we only report on "Repeat Offenders" and exceptional happenings through our weekly #GoodCallsHome. #sblchat#frequency
A4 Excessive amounts of expectations as well as trivial less important behaviors dilute #feedback and decreases focus on attributes directly related to learning. Keep it simple and specific; KISS. 😘 #sblchat
And “originality” is very personal. Even Prezi is cool to the first-time viewer. And sometimes home schema (esp white middle class) provides a huge leg up when it comes to schoolwork & assumptions of what kids have been exposed to (even like going to a mall) #sblchat
I make my girl (and the heaps of math homework she occasionally gets) show me she knows what she is doing and then I’ll act as a calculator/computer resource! #sblchat
My principal dad encouraged me to “cheat”

Speaking of "behaviors", a colleague shared with me this week that one of our Learners generating the most distractions in class praised our learning environment. #Stunned#sblchat
I didn't say measure. I said capture. It is possible to capture if perseverance occurs or not. The reasons behind it are important and can be relayed in a narrative. #sblchat
We use frequency. All Ss are capable of these behaviors when they get to my room - I "report" to give a picture of what their actions are as learners #sblchat
Behaviors are not on report cards, unless it;s excessive tardies or absences. We call home to speak with the Parents of our Learners. So supportive. #sblchat
A5 - Never even pondered this. Thanks for opening my eyes! Will bring it to the team for discussion - we have been using proficiency, but I like the idea of frequency. #sblchat
A5. I think it is important to be descriptive in sharing such behaviors. The fact is that the human condition prevents any of us from ever truly mastering such characteristics as respect and responsibility. We are all—at every age—working toward on getting better. #sblchat
Pete, I agree. We talk a lot about what each behavior looks like for sixth grade. I hammer home the point that it will never be perfect. Nobody follows directions all of the time (nor should they). #sblchat
A6 - Every time we have a Parent, Student, and Teacher meeting, we ask the Learner to report on how the learning environment contributes to and empowers retention through learning. They always have quite a bit to share. It shows their passion. #sblchat
“What might happen if we replaced the word “#measure” in our conversations with “#treasure?” Imagine a world where learning wasn’t measured, but rather, like love and joy and peace, treasured.” #sblchat
A6 My students self-assess and decide what goes on the report card. Obviously, I look at all of them and agree or disagree (which is a great convo). Plus, they are way more accurate than I will ever be! #sblchat
I'm just saying why not report consistent positive behavior. Sounds like someone I would want on my team as an employer or college. Is it a critical part of the story you want to tell about students? If so, you should consider reporting it. #sblchat
I did not do enough of this this year
But what pops inti #sblchaty head is that self assessment hopefully leads to self regulation and self awareness #sblchat
A6 - Mission critical. A learner must be self-assessing/reflecting on their performance in order to be able to improve on or continue that performance. Most self-assessments are spot on. Interesting convos with the ones who aren't. #sblchat

A6 I like to see how my kiddos view themselves - even if I don’t always like what they say (got one boy who proudly dismisses empathy - working on it, but....he’s got a lot going on too....being mindful in modeling it!) #sblchat
A6. Students will only authentically self assess in a culture that bakes learning and understand that every fruitful journey includes many wrong turns. We must creat cultures that support such risk-taking. #sblchat
