A1 - Since we're aiming to make grades more meaningful and based solely on proficiency of our Learning Targets, we suggest behaviors be reported separately. Praise publicly and correct in private. #Respect #sblchat

  • technolandy May 2 @ 9:08 PM EDT
A1 last I checked, most/all learning outcomes don’t add (if polite. nor in a good mood. not even “happy to be at school”) behaviours don’t = learning #sblchat
  • KatieBudrow May 2 @ 9:09 PM EDT
A1 Separating academics and behaviors allows each to be reported more accurately. Giving feedback on each is also more powerful! #sblchat
  • j_ozbolt May 2 @ 9:09 PM EDT
A1 While behaviors do impact grades, they should be separated out since we want to communicate exactly what the Ss know related to set standards #sblchat
  • nkeigher202 May 2 @ 9:09 PM EDT
A1 - Grades/academic proficiencies should reflect what a student knows and is able to do... Behaviors are separate from these. Still important to foster and grow, but separately. #sblchat
  • RoweRikW May 2 @ 9:09 PM EDT
Nice to have you here, Shirley! #sblchat

  • KaizenaHQ May 2 @ 9:11 PM EDT
Agreed! Feedback and growth in both areas are important, but needs to be separate. More accurate, more actionable. #sblchat
    In reply to @KatieBudrow
  • nkeigher202 May 2 @ 9:11 PM EDT
Great point about the feedback on each of them being powerful. Behaviors aren't unimportant - they just don't belong lumped in with academic proficiency. #sblchat

Q2 How can behavioral expectations be unpacked for students? #sblchat
  • technolandy May 2 @ 9:16 PM EDT
I’m still trying to figure out a great way to document descriptive feedback in a respectful way - doesn’t feel right to say “yay - no hands on for two weeks!” Even when that’s great - likewise I don’t want to video bad choices as archival evidence #sblchat
    In reply to @nkeigher202, @KatieBudrow
  • RoweRikW May 2 @ 9:17 PM EDT

A2 - Happy for the suggestions here. We have been using work quality and participation, but are finding them lacking. I will be building a rubric with my 7th graders re: expectations for each. They are able to articulate what good learner behavior looks like. #sblchat
  • KatieBudrow May 2 @ 9:21 PM EDT

Yeah - worked on a committee regarding Creativity. “They” wanted us to determine language like “by grade 3 students will show creativity by...” we laughed and gave them back sequential circles to highlight how creativity is not linear! #sblchat

Ryan, these are NOT "measured", but recognized, valued, and significantly contribute to our learning. #sblchat
      • superstarcurric May 2 @ 9:30 PM EDT
This is great to hear, Rik. How do you measure these? I'd love to share this with my admin.

  • KatieBudrow May 2 @ 9:40 PM EDT
Can you tell me how to accurately capture any of them? For example, effort is so hard to determine if you aren't that individual person doing the work. I can make a judgement on how much effort I think you put in, but it's very subjective. :) Make sense? #sblchat

  • technolandy May 2 @ 9:41 PM EDT
“Effort” is so weird. Some kids have to do more to do the same as others - marks/hours invested? Some need more time some less. Sometimes the kid staring at you and nodding has no idea what’s happening and the kid staring out the window is fully engaged - too subjective #sblchat

Exactly. And a lot of times we say creativity but mean originality. Not the same thing. Also extremely hard to prove. :) #sblchat

A4 - Speaking of "behaviors", our Learners asked us this week to call on Learners in a random fashion, not just those waving their hands. They siad it. #sblchat
  • KatieBudrow May 2 @ 9:43 PM EDT
Q5 Should behaviors be reported on a proficiency (qualitative) or frequency (quantitative) scale? #sblchat
  • technolandy May 2 @ 9:43 PM EDT
Not to mention possible parental intervention. I’ve offered to do my kids homework but they keep declining worries I might impact their “game of school” scores (I don’t use scores) so I assist where/as requested -if it’s sent home every resource is available #sblchat Even Alexa

See if you can make the switch to perseverance. Does the kid give up when the work gets hard or do they push through? Related to effort (just like producing quality work) but not the same. #sblchat

  • Erik_Youngman May 2 @ 9:45 PM EDT
A4 Excessive amounts of expectations as well as trivial less important behaviors dilute #feedback and decreases focus on attributes directly related to learning. Keep it simple and specific; KISS. 😘 #sblchat
  • technolandy May 2 @ 9:45 PM EDT
And “originality” is very personal. Even Prezi is cool to the first-time viewer. And sometimes home schema (esp white middle class) provides a huge leg up when it comes to schoolwork & assumptions of what kids have been exposed to (even like going to a mall) #sblchat

I didn't say measure. I said capture. It is possible to capture if perseverance occurs or not. The reasons behind it are important and can be relayed in a narrative. #sblchat

We use frequency. All Ss are capable of these behaviors when they get to my room - I "report" to give a picture of what their actions are as learners #sblchat
  • RoweRikW May 2 @ 9:48 PM EDT
Behaviors are not on report cards, unless it;s excessive tardies or absences. We call home to speak with the Parents of our Learners. So supportive. #sblchat
    • BrianBratt1 May 2 @ 9:46 PM EDT
Where do you report the behaviors? On grade cards (but separate from assessments)? Some other way? Just to students? To both students and parents?

  • DrPeteSullivan May 2 @ 9:49 PM EDT
A5. I think it is important to be descriptive in sharing such behaviors. The fact is that the human condition prevents any of us from ever truly mastering such characteristics as respect and responsibility. We are all—at every age—working toward on getting better. #sblchat
  • KatieBudrow May 2 @ 9:51 PM EDT
Pete, I agree. We talk a lot about what each behavior looks like for sixth grade. I hammer home the point that it will never be perfect. Nobody follows directions all of the time (nor should they). #sblchat

Q6 What role does self-assessment play in behavioral reporting? #sblchat
  • RoweRikW May 2 @ 9:52 PM EDT
When we care enough to make weekly #GoodCallsHome, we learn so much from the Parents of our Learners. It often explains the behaviors. #sblchat
    • gerryswan2 May 2 @ 9:51 PM EDT

A6 - Every time we have a Parent, Student, and Teacher meeting, we ask the Learner to report on how the learning environment contributes to and empowers retention through learning. They always have quite a bit to share. It shows their passion. #sblchat

  • KatieBudrow May 2 @ 9:54 PM EDT
A6 My students self-assess and decide what goes on the report card. Obviously, I look at all of them and agree or disagree (which is a great convo). Plus, they are way more accurate than I will ever be! #sblchat
  • gerryswan2 May 2 @ 9:55 PM EDT
I'm just saying why not report consistent positive behavior. Sounds like someone I would want on my team as an employer or college. Is it a critical part of the story you want to tell about students? If so, you should consider reporting it. #sblchat

  • nkeigher202 May 2 @ 9:56 PM EDT
A6 - Mission critical. A learner must be self-assessing/reflecting on their performance in order to be able to improve on or continue that performance. Most self-assessments are spot on. Interesting convos with the ones who aren't. #sblchat

A6. Students will only authentically self assess in a culture that bakes learning and understand that every fruitful journey includes many wrong turns. We must creat cultures that support such risk-taking. #sblchat
