The #INeLearn hashtag is used for both asynchronous sharing and synchronous conversations. Include #INeLearn in your tweets if you want to share resources or questions with Indiana educators and school leaders. Asynchronously, the #INeLearn hashtag provides educators across the state of Indiana a central space for sharing. On Thursday evenings beginning at 8 CST/9 EST when you use the #INeLearn hashtag, you are joining a live conversation--the #INeLearn Twitter Chat. For one hour, we interact in real time having a virtual discussion.
Hello! I'm one of your moderators this evening! Tiffany from Scottsburg. I'm coming off an #ISTE18 high and ready for tonight's chat! #INeLearn@mrsareynolds
Hi all! Dianna the TIS for @ClayCommSchools joining in fresh of #iste18 and pen side from the the Summer Type Conference national hog show. I’m wearing many hats this week! #INeLearn
A quick reminder, we accept your As but encourage Rs since #INeLearn Chat is about responding in any way-further questions, concerns, and the like are encouraged.
R1 A classroom that uses active learning should look very different from a traditional classroom. Lots of movement, intentional conversation, etc. #INeLearn
Q2: How does tech support active learning strategies that promote mobility within or outside of the classroom? Please, share examples from your classroom! #INeLearn
R2 Anytime I can have Ss move w/ their device to collaborate w/ others or explore real world scenarios I can. I ask myself, "How can we do this activity in a different style, place, etc.?" #inelearn
Hey #INeLearn friends - @matthewcallison and I are thinking of launching a podcast about what teachers and schools are doing in online learning in k-20 schools in Indiana. Is there already one out there? Is there any interest in this kind of podcast series?
R2 I think being 1:1, active learning strategies happen all the time. We are constantly moving around, independently, in groups, or as a whole class. We've even taken or devices outside several times! #INeLearn
Q3: Active learning strategies are useful in both small group or whole group instruction. Choose one and share what that looks like in your classroom. #INeLearn
R2: tech should help Ss control their consumption of the content. In my former life as a Spanish T I would use @edpuzzleto to present grammar lessons so Ss could have access to me teaching even if I wasn’t present & rewatch as needed. #INeLearn
R2: As adults when we want to know something, we pull out our devices and look it up. Allowing Ss to do that in the classroom feels unnatural for some. Also, allowing it to change the direction of the conversation is ok, too. #INeLearn
R3: it's as low-tech as you can get, but I'm a big fan of Stay & Stray. Groups change as we go, students switch roles from asking to answering. We can pack a lot of learning & a lot of moving in one class period. #inelearn
R2: I am currently in an online course that utilizes @Flipgrid which is a great resource for online discussions. It's perfect for Ss because they can engage in discussions outside of the classroom while still seeing their faces. This makes discussions more meaningful #inelearn
R3: in my role as TIS I have been trying to actively encourage Ts to try new tech tools in their classrooms and use @padlet for other Ts to share their faves and how they use. Reluctant Ts in our district are sometimes more apt to take those suggestions. #INeLearn
R2: As an admin, my classrooms were filled with ed tech that was aligned to state standards, provided immediate feedback, and empowered sts to own their learning through choice #INeLearn#ICEIndiana#LEADLap#EdTech#EdTechChat
R3 Scoot is a great way to get Ss up and moving. I've used old school paper/pencil, but I've also used tech. Ss can create word problems for other Ss to move around and solve. #INeLearn
R3: Full access with @Flipgrid changes everything. Also using @WeVideo this year and going to have my students do a lot of podcasts for their voice of learning. #INeLearn
@WeVideo was huge at #ISTE18 this year. Seems I saw it at every poster session. I haven't fully utilized it yet, but it's on my exploration list. #INeLearn
In reply to
@LCHS_Bio, @Flipgrid, @WeVideo, @WeVideo
Q4: Polling/surveying can be excellent active learning strategies that provide feedback. How do you utilize these strategies with your learning community? #INeLearn
I had my Ss create #PSAs for genetic diseases last year. A quick 10 minute demo was all it took for my Ss to be up and running. Works well with Chromebooks. #INeLearn
R3: As someone who is still a student in the classroom, I personally like starting off in small groups and sharing ideas, and then sharing our collective views as well as different ideas with the rest of the class. #inelearn
R4 I use polling/surveying to get a temperature of my classroom environment during & after projects, end of quarter, etc. They really allow me to adjust my teaching to fit Ss needs and wants. #inelearn
R3 Another thought...using a Driving Question board (can be low tech or high tech) allows Ss to drive where they want to go with content. I used to do this heavily. Need to get back to it. #INeLearn
R4: I use Google Forms with Student Council all of the time. We use it to connect, make decisions, and evaluate projects. Not a traditional classroom, but still valuable to student growth. #INeLearn
R4: @google forms is great feedback. Use this often with Ss. You can do the same with @CanvasLMS. We also use @DyKnow which has a feedback tool for Ss. #INeLearn
R5 In a way, Ss polled using @flipgrid because we used the reaction features to garner interest in topics, etc. Going to explore this more as well. I didn't start until the last two weeks of school w/ this method. #INeLearn
R4: I visited @bhsrepay during one of his classes while they prepared for the AP Human Geography exam. He had his class do a @GetKahoot review and was able to get quick feedback on what topics were solid and which ones needed extra review before the exam. #inelearn
I've borrowed the Teacher Report Card and used it with a couple of my classes. Good stuff. Sounds similar to what you've done. --> https://t.co/U7GRQkcgyU#INeLearn
Q5: What active learning strategies facilitate ongoing discussion/collaboration in your learning community? They can be F2F, tech-fueled, or both! #INeLearn
R4: I’ve used @polleverywhere & @Mentimeterto poll Ts during sessions to gauge comprehension of topic, pacing, and general mood about the content. Hopefully this modeling will transfer to their classes. #INeLearn
R5 I am still a huge fan of the old school pair share. We've even done a speed-dating style before. Inner circle/outer circle and rotate them. This gets them talking to new faces. #INeLearn
R5: #4Cs is going to have a huge place in my classroom from this point forward. We will spend the first part of school doing active communication, being creative, critically thinking, and collaborating on tasks. This will be done both F2F and digitally. #INeLearn
R5 I think it's important to intentionally teach good F2F skills w/ collaboration in addition to all of our techy greatness. Just throwing that out there! #inelearn
R5: I like using tools Ss are used to in new ways for this. Such as a simple Google doc as a collab platform to answer and ask questions during a blended lesson. A tip I picked up from @micheeaton#INeLearn
R5: Blogging and responding is also a way to provide opportunities with collaboration and critical thinking long with the communication piece. #INeLearn
R5: I've noticed that discussions tend to keep going when the instructor allows some light debating. Challenging each other's ideas (respectfully, of course) will usually lead to more people engaging in and paying attention to the discussion. #inelearn
Great to see so many sharing tonight...especially since I know many of you are just back from #ISTE18 in Chicago! that is what makes Indiana so special...always learning! #inelearn
Q6: How can we help others/colleagues understand the need for and move toward active learning strategies in the classroom? In other words, how can we be advocates for active learning strategies? #inelearn
R6 I am looking forward to working hand-in-hand w/ a colleague to bring richer experiences in our classrooms this year. I believe collaboration is key. It shows a model, generates ideas, and is an overall win for Ss. #inelearn
R6: I don't think we are the best advocates. I think the students are. They drive the most change. Students don't know just how powerful they are. #INeLearn
R6: I don't think we are the best advocates. I think the students are. They drive the most change. Students don't know just how powerful they are. #INeLearn
R6 Model, Model, Model....not to be cliche, but be the change you want to see in others. And share! Present. Blog. Inspire others to want to be part of the active learning! #inelearn
R6: I don't think we are the best advocates. I think the students are. They drive the most change. Students don't know just how powerful they are. #INeLearn
R6: I don't think we are the best advocates. I think the students are. They drive the most change. Students don't know just how powerful they are. #INeLearn
R6: To me, the best way is to model it. So many of the presos I attended at #sselearn & #evillagenwi were built around active learning. Most of my admins building staff meetings this way as well. When it's a way of life, it's easier to move into the classroom. #inelearn
R6: model it. Have an open door. I WANT my colleagues to see what I M doing and challenging the traditional teaching mode. Then, I will follow up with them. Ask if they want me to demonstrate with their Ss during my prep. #INeLearn
R6: Getting people to check out chats like this is one way! Also, encouraging all the newbies like me to adopt active learning strategies in their future classrooms will help turn it into a norm. #inelearn
R6 Has anyone ever heard of the "pineapple chart" method? It's basically an open-door policy for sharing your classroom with observers. Neat idea. Check it out! #INeLearn
R7 I think we have to remember the basics of good pedagogy and allow tech to enhance and open doors for Ss. Never use tech for sake of tech. Always asking...is this the best method for Ss. Allowing them to find what works for them is key as well. #inelearn
R6 Has anyone ever heard of the "pineapple chart" method? It's basically an open-door policy for sharing your classroom with observers. Neat idea. Check it out! #INeLearn
R7 I don't think good pedagogy changes, tech or not. Good teaching is good teaching. Tech just enhances what you do. Some of my best lessons don't even involve tech, and that's ok. #INeLearn
Q8: Let’s take these next moments to share any other active learning strategy resources, tips, encouragements, etc. Share your expertise! What have you learned this summer you can't wait to try? #inelearn
R8 I cannot wait to get back my roots and explore PBL again in the science classroom. PBL is essentially a hub of active learning strategies at its core. #inelearn
R7: we need to remember that tech is a tool that allows us to help engage Ss. It is the great opportunities we give to the Ss that allow them to thrive. It’s planning, understanding curriculum, and providing meaningful opportunities that make the difference. #INeLearn
R8: Well, I'm starting with Pineapple Chart.
I have found that dropping #stickman in Google Maps has been a game changer for Ss who haven't been outside IN. Watching them explore is one of my favorite things to do.
#INeLearn
R8: Need to make sure I build in opportunities for students to create more - different ways for them to display their learning. Picked up some solid strategies from @jcorippo at Virtual Summit and @kathy_b27 at #sselearn. #inelearn
R8: I haven’t learned a thing about blended/virtual learning and @CanvasLMS this summer. I mean, I have learned a lot about the good and bad parts of it. I have also seen some great virtual content we present to our Ss. Excited to continue the use moving forward #INeLearn
R7: Every class is a group of individuals. Some strategies will work and others won't. You have to be willing to adapt to what works best for your students. #inelearn
R7: Every class is a group of individuals. Some strategies will work and others won't. You have to be willing to adapt to what works best for your students. #inelearn
R8: I’ve had to do a lot of planning for our summer school program in @ltgoodnews this summer. This has made me more cognizant of my planning for my class and making sure things work smoothly ahead of the game. Also to be flexible and not sweat the small stuff. #INeLearn
WU I didn't hear it tonight, but at #ISTE18. I am intrigued with the ways to utilize Numbers, yes Numbers, for science labs. Super impressed w/ this ingenious way to create authentic portraits of student learning. #inelearn
R8: I've really enjoyed using Flipgrid in my online course and I have been recommending it to my former teachers. Typed out discussions tend to be boring and redundant, in my opinion. I love the face to face element the Flipgrid brings. #inelearn
My brain is filled to the brim. #iste18 stuffed and #INeLearn was like a dessert I couldn’t resist. Thanks to our moderators and tonight’s PLN members! Watch for details on the NEW classroom teacher series starting 4th Thursdays in July!
W/U: I want to continue to see what's possible for my students in a 1:1 environment. Gained some yardage last year, time to punch it in now. I have @LCHS_Bio & the 4Cs in my head pretty much constantly. I need to plan intentionally for students to creat & collaborate. #inelearn
WU I also want to throw out a great summer PD read. Check out The Power of Moments. Not just for education, but has been TRANSFORMATIONAL for me. Here's the link on Amazon. https://t.co/iwPQ0Huqd2#INeLearn
WU: I can’t wait to work more on helping promote student engagement and some useful tools for active learning. @Flipgrid and @WeVideo are two of my tops to explore. #INeLearn
As always @MrsCoppleSES and @KindergartenVF rocked it tonight. Sorry I was late, but the ice cream after a loss was needed. See you all next week and thank you for making me strive to be better every week! #INeLearn
