Hey all - TJ from CT so pumped to dig into PD season (really my whole year) - but who doesn't like a more tan and relaxed group of participants!! #NGSSchat
Hi Everyone, Kristin from Il here. So excited to be able to take a grading break to join the chat tonight! Can't wait to learn new fun things. #NGSSchat
Hi everyone in #NGSSchat land

Ready to Rock & Roll!
A1: Finish my Masters by presenting my NOS Research! @MSSEatMSU And, as always, PRP meetings with @AchieveInc and all the other wonderful attendees! #NGSSChat
A1 Other than plan for a climate summit for @cascience and supporting @earlyimplement summer institutes, I'm excited to camp in Big Basin (S. end of Redwood range) and go to the Mammoth Blues and Brews fest where I will finally see @ozomatli perform (vintage LA band)
#NGSSChat
Excited about everything! Going to Boulder to re-work will miss @bpenuel some storylines, Teaching a 10 NGSS Class, Achieve PRP Meeting, and all kinds of NSTA projects. #NGSSchat
A1: I’m excited about a presentation on phenomena, the equip panel meeting in NOLA, and editing our curriculum! Summer is now my busiest time of year. 😂 #ngsschat
Hi #NGSSchat! I'm a fresh graduate from @PennGSE endeavoring to #RemakeLearning in the Pittsburgh region. I <3 inquiry, PBL, and empowering youth through scientific literacy + decision making. Seeking to inspire wonder while keeping it real always.
A2, Here in New York, one of the biggest challenges has been marrying intrinsic motivation with extrinsic. Schools are hoping for an actual timeline from the state rather than a somewhat timeline. . . #NGSSchat

A2 Consistency & being intentional with #DrivingQuestionBoard I use them, but not to their full potential Getting support from fellow #IQWST Ts Learn so much from them on our Facebook page #NGSSchat
A1. I am excited to facilitate a NGSX PD session this summer with TJ for the PreK-6 teachers in my district. This is big first step for elementary science. The second big step we are making sure science is taught every day in Prek-6 next year :) #NGSSchat
A2: Answering at a cross-state perspective: People are still in search of good materials for their particular grade levels, compelling anchoring phenomena, and the challenge of assessment #NGSSchat
A2: Mostly helping high schools navigate. They have so many difficult decisions to make. Our #CANGSS Collaborative reached out to districts that have been moving for several years to support those early in transition at a “high school summit” that was powerful. #NGSSChat
A2: My biggest challenge was also a benefit in the long run... This year I moved from MS to HS Bio, so finding and creating new 3D storylines was a huge, and difficult, part of my year. But, new content meant I couldn't fall back on any old not-aligned activities! #NGSSchat
A2. Really integrating the cross-cutting concepts throughout the year. I want to be more intentional about it. Still looking for resources and ideas. Please share if you have any! #NGSSchat
A2: Authentically using the SEPs to uncover DCIs and...A solid understanding of how talk can support sensemaking and how talk moves are strategic #ngsschat

And even with a timeline in CA - many aren't moving. We (@cascience and partners) are fighting to have a science placeholder on our state's accountability dashboard in the hopes district leadership will take note and support implementation #NGSSChat
A2 We start roll-out next year, but have a primary concern regarding lack of real lab space, class sizes and equipment in order to do this with fidelity #ngsschat
.@nextgenstoryli1 helped by giving me the Addie storyline (which was awesome!). I wrote one for Genetics - How is it possible that even twins can look diff around the phenomenon of twins with different skin tones, and epigenetics! BUT, it needs a lot of editing... #NGSSchat
Me too Brian! The first time I did a scientists circle as part of the DQB routine-- I was amazed at the participation and visible thinking. There is so much to iterate and try with the DQB! #NGSSchat
It's really a challenge, but also a privilege to re-envision science education for the students in your community. We focused heavily on an equity lens. #NGSSChat
The biggest challenge seems to be time - time to work & collaborate with others, time to reflect & rework, time to align more classes. but you do what you can right....#NGSSchat
A2. The biggest challenge for me this year was science was not being taught in grades K-6. This is resolved for next year by our entire administrative staff was trained in NGSS. Now my biggest challenge for next year is curriculum. #NGSSchat
A2: We’re trying to work on integrating our lessons and units and realized that we needed to tweak lessons to create better storylines. We also needed to find good anchoring phenomenon and are using #hyperdocs to plan together and for students to use #ngsschat
A1: I’m excited to give and get! Providing #CANGSS training to various schools and districts & building upon my #NGSS knowledge with @K12Alliance gurus! #NGSSChat
When I started with NGSS, I developed units one PE at a time. In doing that , I realized the connections that tied PEs together. It is a process. #ngsschat
Yes! That happened when I was an Elem Sci Specialist - it was amazing. My last year in the classroom I had 1 class of 6th grade that I was going to get back as 7th graders... but got a new job! I was really looking forward to fostering another year of growth in them #NGSSChat
A2: My biggest #NGSS challenge (but also very rewarding) this year was spreading the love of NGSS. I wanted to share the phenomena based 3D shift of #CANGSS to Ts in my district.
I have found that my @EarlyImplement#sciencetribe have been supportive and informative! #NGSSChat
A3: We are meeting as a district to revamp how we teach! Our goal is to help all of our department to transition towards phenomena based learning. Change is difficult, but if we are all a team- it can be done! #ngsschat
A3: Writing, writing, writing...about the 5 Dimensions: DCIs, SEPs, CCCs, interest and identity that are all needed to promote equity and leverage diversity in the classroom #NGSSChat
#NGSSchat A1: PBL SS for grades 6-8. 2 multi age groups will work on a 3 wk project. 2 hrs of PBL and 1 hr of circle on a YA novel. They switch for the second 3 weeks. Bridges & Benches for group 1 and using a historical event to build an escape room. Like spinach in a smoothie!
Many @EarlyImplement district are working to embed environmental literacy into their summer institutes. The main goal is leveraging the leadership of our teachers to branch out and support other teachers in the districts/CMO's #NGSSChat

A3: Some serious self-reflection on this past year: Student surveys, formative assessment results, and my own notes to see what worked, what needs work, and what should be thrown out. Then, making my 3D vision better! #NGSSchat
PS - the @EarlyImplement
just released our 5th evaluation report - all about the tools and resources developed in the initiative to help with #NGSS implementation! From sample rubrics, phenomena, walk-through tools - enjoy! #NGSSChathttps://t.co/fqOyZQq5k2
A2 #NGSSchat: Navigating AAALL the SEPs. I spent a great deal thinking about argumentation... and ended up doing my master's inquiry on it! Thanks to @drvictorsampson for lots of resources there. Hoping to spend even more time on argumentation while developing 3D learning!
A3 (serious this time)
3D workshop at NSTA STEM Forum
Attend 5 Tools Workshop
Attend NSTA Summer Congress
Attend NextGen TIME Workshop
Attend Achieve PRP Meeting
and more
#NGSSchat
A3: I'm scheduled to work with close to 400 teachers this summer in multi-day PDs! Going to do my best to share the vision for teaching and learning!! #NGSSchat
A3: #NGSS is about deeper learning. I hope to dig deeper into existing lessons to create inquiry based learning experiences that are 3D. My big hope is to make thinking even more visible by bringing my sense-making notebooking opps for Ss during my time w/ them. #NGSSChat
A1: I'm trying to restructure my classroom routines so it is student paced, differentiated, and S centered. I'm thinking of leveling up based on mastery of skills and content. I'm an RPG nerd, so there is a lot of ideas from that I'm trying to incorporate. #NGSSchat

A3: Lots of reading and re-reading. Writing units for next year, submitting some presentation proposals for summer and fall conferences focused on #NGSS#ngsschat
As @EarlyImplement districts are transitioning into new 2 year grant, our focus is about building capacity. As @flabellinaJG mentioned, this means leveraging our leaders to advocate for #scienceforall. #NGSSChat

Special Ed PD around #NGSS is so important! @STEMTeachTools - Can you make a resource for how #NGSS provides equity for our special ed students, specifically??? I know several people would benefit from your guided support! #NGSSchat
A2: our district is engaging in teacher driven curriculum design. It's great, but also sometimes overwhelming and a little "too many chefs" with 26 "living Earth" teachers participating #NGSSchat
A4: How students reflect. I want to model more so I can offer more choice next year. The students should be able to determine what type of reflection is the best for them. #ngsschat

A3. Teachers have the summer off - Not - LOL! Several ways 1. Faciliating PD for teacher in and outside of my state 2. helping with development of state assessment 3. attending EQuIP training 4. writing elementary curriculum 5. re-reading Ambitious Science Teaching #NGSSchat
A4: My practice is a little bit different now that I work with adults – but I’ll be working with them to have the courage to make the shift from educators who disseminate information to master architects who build opportunities for student sense-making #NGSSChat
A4 I'll be working with my teachers to make the needed changes to our curriculum and make sure that we increase our understanding of 3-D learning. #NGSSchat
A4: Summer is great time reflect! It’s also valuable to reflect after lessons: what was effective/ineffective. My hope is to focus on the CCCs next year in my lessons & finding opps to explicitly teach them.
CCCs are like silent ninjas, easily overlooked but so powerful!#NGSSChat
Here are the ideas I have so far:
Blogging
Podcasting ( with #anchor)
#Screencastify + Notes
Keeping an online journal via Google Sites (embedding completed assignments/materials and summarizing to the side)
Regular journaling. #ngsschat
Building capacity in our Teacher leaders is so important. We’re working on this through the Instructional Leadership Corps. It takes time, but some of our work is starting to show growth. #ngsschat

A5: I am learning how to use #RaspberryPi in my classroom so I have some Python books and classes that I will be going to.
Looking forward to reading your all’s answers and growing my list! #ngsschat
A4 #ngsschat: I want to design PBL experiences grounded in inquiry and complex instruction (thanks @zachherrmann) for more effective collaboration and authentic problem-solving!
I am working my way through the practices book again and the Feedback Loop, but I had to take a break to grade the IL state science assessments. So those are what I am reading right now. #NGSSchat
A5: I’ve become more and more interested in patterns in nature as I’ve inquired into phenomena. I started and hope to finish @BiomimicryInst book from @JanineBenyus- Biomimicry: Innovation Inspired by Nature #ngsschat

I have a lot on my reading list, but may just go back to Darwin's Armada by Ian McCalman in part because I need the adventure, and because the ending blew me away and made me want to read it all over again. #NGSSChat
I'm using this book in a book study with some of my teachers. It really helps with understanding the SEPs. Contains great examples from classrooms. #NGSSchat
Q6: What general pedagogy or instructional strategies do you want to learn more about this summer to enhance your #NGSS or 3D implementation? #NGSSchat
I've been reading Darwin's Voyage of the Beagle, and I am beyond impressed with his powers of observation, especially re: geology. He's a superhero of questioning, too, pondering out loud, never hesitating to reach out to experts for their thoughts. #Darwin#NGSSchat

I have a bunch of teacher books waiting for me this summer. I have Teach like a Pirate, Kids Deserve it (just heard Adam Welcome speak, he's awesome), Eduprotocols, Becoming a Responsive Science Teacher. I don't think summer is long enough. #NGSSchat
Q6: What general pedagogy or instructional strategies do you want to learn more about this summer to enhance your #NGSS or 3D implementation? #NGSSchat
A6: Really want to explore how to extend @nextgenstoryli1 supports for student questions that are related to their experiences and cultural funds of knowledge, and not necessarily in storylines #ngsschat

Darwin's Armada is what inspired me to read Voyage of the Beagle! I loved learning about Hooker, Huxley, and Wallace, and their interaction over many years. My happy reading place. #NGSSchat
As our summer learning chat is winding down, here is some info for our Summer #NGSSchat schedule--chats on June 7 (hosted by @casciecne ) June 21 (talking the #NGSS appendices) + July 6 (STEM) and July 20 (edtech) We hope you will join us!
I love local connections, and getting my students talking to real scientists! The power of the internet lets them connect across the country too - We just had a digital guest speaker over skype this week! #NGSSchat
I love using the 5 Tools with teachers in the development of units. It build such a rich understanding of the process involved with writing 3D curriculum. I will be training teachers in the fall.
#NGSSchat
Same here! I just wrote a unit for 3rd grade that includes a reading on Ancient Missouri. I didn’t know we had a state dinosaur! It made my day. #ngsschat
A6: I’m interested in learning more about new ways to build purposeful metacognitive opportunities for student reflection and how to build this into lab settings in elementary schools. #ngsschat
