PLC has been in effect for over 5 years effectively in my math department. It is amazing how much it has impacted our students and us as teachers. #oklaed
A1: It's not instructional, but we now let Ss earn a pass on the 20% semester test by being in school and working hard. Both attendance and grades count - and the # of Ss who are there each day has increased. #oklaed
A1: I use a lot of Kagan strategies to get my kids working together. Our school makes sure every student gets small group time with a teacher every day for reading. I will think of more in a minute.. (just started coffee) #oklaed
A1 - I started having Ss produce the questions for our weekly round table discussions using elements from @RightQuestion and the Harkness method. It resulted in more engaged and prepared Ss. #oklaed
A1 - We have really pushed literacy and reading in every content area. We have math teachers, art teachers, etc. buying in and having Ss read articles that tie into their curriculum. It’s awesome! #oklaed
A1)COLLABORATION! We are able to meet as departments once a week and are receiving further PLC training. This started a couple of years ago, and it’s making a difference. #oklaed
A1 Our Ts jog thru the SY rather than sprinting thru Mar.: Pacing of aligned lessons ensures all Objs are taught by SpringBrk #oklaed@AlphaPlusEdu SpringBrk #oklaed@AlphaPlusEdu
A1b: We also now have a Flex class on Wednesdays and Fridays. Weds are study periods and Fridays are character building or future-focused activities. Power Flex Ts are available both days if Ss need help. #oklaed
A1 - Being out of the classroom I am not sure on what the schools are requiring. When I have the CTE Teacher in PD, I want to know how they are doing and what they really need help with. #oklaed
A1: As a counselor, I always wanted to find a way to support the instructional process going on in class. That includes using their content when necessary to link my lessons, & being respectful of their schedules. #oklaed
A1: I am extremely thankful for the support of our Admin to encourage us to seek professional development in our specific department or field outside of our district. As a world language teacher going #deskless has been a game changer. #oklaed
Q2: Classroom environment directly impacts learner engagement. How can we create classroom environments that keep learners interested and engaged? #Oklaed

A1: Open ended questions in math (we use the conjecture, revision format for math talk), I use Nearpod during lessons so I get feedback from all students instead of the most outspoken. #oklaed
A1 - I started having Ss produce the questions for our weekly round table discussions using elements from @RightQuestion and the Harkness method. It resulted in more engaged and prepared Ss. #oklaed
A1. Our amazing 10th grade English team last year worked on common grading methods that resulted in more equitable instruction across teachers. We were still working on data collection to see the numbers, but the anecdotal evidence was really positive! #oklaed
A1: Concept thinking maps (frayer model, Circle Maps, T charts) have been extremely effective for S’s to activate prior knowledge and enhance critical thinking skills. Also like turn and talks to encourage substantive conversations. #oklaed
A-1 Direct Instruction works for some. Cooperative learning works for some. Reciprocal learning works for some. Many use a combination of all three and others to instruct our students. #oklaed
A2: Let them talk, think of topics that interest them & embed them in lessons, care about what they care about, let them talk, have tables or groups desks, get them moving, make BIG connections, and finally....let them talk. #oklaed

A2: I have done the syllabus project for 5 years now. I always called it a lite PBL because it didn’t have all the elements. I have super sized it this year and am so excited about how my SS are choosing everything that will happen in their room. #oklaed

A2 Breaking with some of the traditional models can help, but one of the biggest is simply being able to read your students. When you see their eyes glaze over it is time to change your approach #oklaed
A2. I’m loving all the photos I’ve seen of secondary classrooms set up like cafes for more authentic conversation. I’m working on minimizing my classroom decorations to make student work the focus. #oklaed
A2: Brain breaks are still a GREAT way to refresh the mind about 20 mins after instruction begins, yes... even for high school students. But also very important respect on ALL levels must be established. #oklaed

A2: I went to flexible seating for this reason. I also allow Ss to work in the hallway, 4th grade lounge, outdoor classroom, etc. Think beyond your 4 walls of your classroom. I wanted my room to be similar to a coffee shop. (where I feel most comfy) #oklaed

I think we move on too quickly in education. It takes time for something to take hold. We had a huge turn over this year (5 out of 9 new Ts). We will really see if our system is solid this year. #oklaed
A2: If you aren't enjoying what you are doing, they aren't enjoying what they learn. My atmosphere is one of family. I'm the school mama, we laugh, we get things done, we follow the rules. Oh yeah and we laugh some more #oklaed
A2: Collaboration between T & Ss, flexibility in procedures, relationships between all—family approach, T modeling self-regulation... VULNERABILITY #oklaed
A well organized flipped classroom can keep most students focused most of the time. My experience - way less disruption. Way more academically focused student/student interaction. I saw similar with #gamification#oklaed

A2 - I think one of the biggest things we can do to increase engagement is to make our students feel welcome and sage and make an effort to get to know them. This will create a healthier environment and improve everything. #oklaed

I always say the same thing about wanting a coffee shop classroom! I love looking around my room & seeing/hearing kids learning in all the areas of the room. It's magic! #oklaed
Instead of giving Ss a syllabus with everything laid out. I give Ss a syllabus with a lot of blank spots. I am finishing planning out the details tonight. Do you want me to send it to you when I am done? #oklaed
A1: Open ended questions in math (we use the conjecture, revision format for math talk), I use Nearpod during lessons so I get feedback from all students instead of the most outspoken. #oklaed
A2 It starts with the teachers planning. The teacher should have strategies in place to engage students from the start of class to the end. Teachers should always apply real world examples in every lesson. A variety of questioning techniques is key as well. #oklaed

A3 Feedback is ongoing and is geared toward growth and improvement. Grades have a sense of finality to them and don't really leave room for growth. #oklaed
A3 - In theory nothing. In practice so much. Feedback is used to help and grow Ss. Grades are use as either a negative or positive reward. Grades should be a form of feedback and communication though. #oklaed
A3: Feedback garners change; grades are entered in the gradebook and usually mean the opportunity for improvement is over . #oklaed Both are necessary and both reflect attitudes about school.
#OklaEd A1: Pardon my concern: I don’t think ‘INSTRUCTIONAL strategies ‘ and ‘student achievement’ are good partners ... ‘EFFECTIVE LEARNING FACILITATION strategies’ and ‘student achievement’ certainly do!!!
And to the kids. I remember when your education was dependent on what teacher you have. PLC helps make all students worthy of a quality education. #oklaed

A3: (I've been talking to people about this a lot lately & it's becoming my soapbox lol) Grades tell very little, arguably nothing. Good feedback tells you everything you need to move on or backtrack, etc. Grades are just a letter/number. I don't understand it.. #oklaed
A3: For me feedback is when you give the Ss an opportunity to fix their mistakes or redo their work. Grades are evaluations of the final product #oklaed
A-3 Unfortunately, some think they are one and the same and all feedback is related to a grade. I don't buy that thinking. Feedback is communication between you and the student. It might be oral or written. #oklaed
A3: Grades are required. Feedback isn't but Ts do it voluntarily bc we know it's the most important. Grades please the parents, feedback pleases the student. Grades don't help you grow as a learner, feedback does. #oklaed
A3: Feedback allows to Ss and Ts to have consistent dialog about the content or lesson. Can move in any direction and allows students to interpret. #oklaed
A3. Feedback ought to happen continuously and be formative. Grades should reflect student mastery.
Any #okleg candidates with us tonight might consider how large class sizes can impact the amount of time it takes to give effective feedback. #oklaed
A2: Definitely create a safe learning environment that promotes effort and supports the learner in the process of grappling with new information. If S’s feel safe in the struggle, they’ll be more open to try new things. #OklaEd

More than anything else I want my students to leave my classroom being deeper thinkers. If I can get them asking better questions I am well on the way to that goal. #oklaed
A3) Feedback gives me info about my Ss and helps me determine which direction to go. Grades give me a vision into Ss output at that specific time. Feedback is used every day, and I get grades 2-5 times a week. #oklaed
A3 - I HATE GRADES!! Okay, now that we got that out of the way:
Feedback can help a Ss identify strengths/weaknesses & assess their understanding. Grades, well, depending on the T they don’t tell a whole lot. We are held to grades, but I think they limit growth. #oklaed
Q4: How can we make time to provide the valuable feedback on higher-order thinking and/or what are some time-saving strategies that can be used? #Oklaed
Feedback (0.74)
I watched Rick Wormeli talk about grades in a recent video for the #HiveSummit his description of grades as simply a means of communication really impacted my thinking #oklaed
A3: Feedback is constantly given and is a two way communication with the Ss for them to better understand and acquire the concept. Without proper feedback and guidance Ss will not improve. And NO a number is NOT feedback! #oklaed
Q4 - When possible via the tech situation we can use the things like Google forms to create our rubrics and give feedback quicker and not have it pile up on us. #oklaed
Q4: How can we make time to provide the valuable feedback on higher-order thinking and/or what are some time-saving strategies that can be used? #Oklaed
Feedback (0.74)
A4: Use tech as a tool to do quick(er), smaller "Lines of Learning" (LoL) aka: easy grading. Gives you more time for the #PBL or other means of feedback. #oklaed
A4: I use rubrics with comment sections so that I can give feed back on lab reports while still evaluating understanding. It helps me grade and Ss see where there might be issues #oklaed
A3: Feedback encourages growth. Here’s how to do better, etc. Grades are a tradition that will probably continue forever but have little value as far as measuring growth in my opinion. Feedback>Grades #oklaed
A3: #oklaed Honestly I believe feedback is more important grades as we typically think about grades. Feedback gives students reflection on what they are doing right and areas they can improve in. Grades I think should reflect their amount of improvement and not mastery of a skill
A4: I would love to have a great answer for this but I know secondary people have it hard and I don't have that answer (to me 24 is tricky enough)...so I bow out. #oklaed
Q4: How can we make time to provide the valuable feedback on higher-order thinking and/or what are some time-saving strategies that can be used? #Oklaed
Feedback (0.74)
A4 One possibility is to provide audio feedback linked to the assignment, quiz or work the student has submitted. You may not be able to do it all during class, but hearing your voice can have a much greater impact than any written comments #oklaed
A3: I view feedback as instruction, and use with students to tell them they are doing well or to tell them which areas they need to correct some mistakes. #OklaEd
Q4: How can we make time to provide the valuable feedback on higher-order thinking and/or what are some time-saving strategies that can be used? #Oklaed
Feedback (0.74)
A4: You can have standard comments (A1, C13, etc.) that mean a basic skill the S needs to work on. But even with this, it helps to write one thing the S did well and one thing the S could improve for the next draft. #oklaed
Q4: How can we make time to provide the valuable feedback on higher-order thinking and/or what are some time-saving strategies that can be used? #Oklaed
Feedback (0.74)
A4. Let students figure out their own feedback with assistance. At the end of a project, I have a section for them to self evaluate the pros and cons of the project. #oklaed
A3 Teachers should always be assessing their students (Formative). The only time you would not provide feedback would be summative assessments. Use those formative assessments to identify lack of knowledge then reteach. If there is create lessons to extend knowledge. #oklaed
Love it! We have a staff PLC with custodial and admin assistant representation. Learned that idea in listening to Dr. Broiles @msprincipalmchs in my larger PLN #OklaEd
If you go with mastery learning - then feedback is easier to do. You aren't working in 30 student chunks. You are working in 10-ish or smaller student chunks. #Oklaed
Q4: How can we make time to provide the valuable feedback on higher-order thinking and/or what are some time-saving strategies that can be used? #Oklaed
Feedback (0.74)
A4. One of my colleagues used a method of rotating students she worked with every day. Everyone engaged with the material everyday, but Mon. she worked with one group, T the next, etc. She varied the groups weekly so no one knew their day ahead of time. #oklaed
A4 - As an ELA T, we do a LOT of writing. I do writing conferences w/every S consistently. Also, I’m a huge believer that the person doing the editing does the learning. They grade their own and then we sit and chat. I make time for that. #oklaed
Q4: How can we make time to provide the valuable feedback on higher-order thinking and/or what are some time-saving strategies that can be used? #Oklaed
Feedback (0.74)
A4: Yikes! Never use DOK1 questions. I mainly use project assignments in which they get feedback from me or the other students as they complete each step. #oklaED
Q4: How can we make time to provide the valuable feedback on higher-order thinking and/or what are some time-saving strategies that can be used? #Oklaed
Feedback (0.74)
A4: Technology can help Ts provide feedback to Ss. That’s pretty vague to say, but there are so many tools out there, Ts need to use what they and their Ss are comfortable with. #OklaEd
Q4: How can we make time to provide the valuable feedback on higher-order thinking and/or what are some time-saving strategies that can be used? #Oklaed
Feedback (0.74)
A-4 You are going to have to branch out and involve students in deep thinking discussions. They can't respond to essay questions that require explicit answers unless they have been taught how to think deeply. Sometimes there are several right answers. #oklaed
A5: I encourage my students to use the rubric from the last lab to help improve on the next one. We do many lab write ups and free responses, and I find the best way to improve is to practice #oklaed
A5: I am going to have to end on this comment :(. I have come to love @sowntogrow for this exact purpose. Seen such a difference in my students last year. Using it again this year. Have a great night everyone and start to the new school year. #oklaed
I leave feedback on our LMS @Schoology and students respond there, or we can set up a conference. When we use Google Doc assignments students can tag me in a note and we can correspond back and forth. #oklaed
Q4: How can we make time to provide the valuable feedback on higher-order thinking and/or what are some time-saving strategies that can be used? #Oklaed
Feedback (0.74)
There are great formative assessment tools that we can use at all grade levels to encourage quicker feedback to students. #plickers#kahoot#socrative#forms#Oklaed
A5: It's important to allow students time to reflect on their feedback and make changes for the future. We can't provide feedback then immediately move on to something else. It was a total waste if so. Reflection is necessary for growth. #oklaed
A4. One of my colleagues used a method of rotating students she worked with every day. Everyone engaged with the material everyday, but Mon. she worked with one group, T the next, etc. She varied the groups weekly so no one knew their day ahead of time. #oklaed
A5 - I think it depends on some things. Did they put any effort into the assignment? Do they care about the class? Do you have a good relationship with them? If yes to any of these it will impact them. If no to all they won't care. #oklaed
A5 in Kindergarten it’s natural to observe, provide feedback, and allow students to experiment with learning, working toward mastery and ownership of learning...too bad that kind of environment isn’t more accepted across grade levels. #OklaEd
There are great formative assessment tools that we can use at all grade levels to encourage quicker feedback to students. #plickers#kahoot#socrative#forms#Oklaed
A4: I think it’s important to know the student and understand what kind of feedback they would best respond to, all feedback shouldn’t look the same. #oklaed
#OklaEd Feedback should be specific and immediate. Grades should be standards based and not reflect compliance but mastery of skills. Feedback helps Ss master skills.
A5: lets be honest some students do more with feedback than others. I love when students don’t use my feedback because it gives them an opportunity to create what they want to create and then at the end they can do a self reflection of how they think it turned out. #oklaED
Q6: We need to “own our teaching” as much as our students need to “own their learning.” How can we guide and/or motivate students to self-assess their learning and progress? #Oklaed

Q4: How can we make time to provide the valuable feedback on higher-order thinking and/or what are some time-saving strategies that can be used? #Oklaed
Feedback (0.74)
A5: LOL This is a loaded Q! Some Ss thrive and take the feedback as a personal invitation to do better. Others glance at it and ask whether they can throw it away. Actual feedback (not just corrections) usually gets some attention. #oklaed
My college students are required to use that feedback on their next assignment - or even - *gasp* resubmit the same assignment. Same thing with my Calculus students. #oklaed
A6 - I think we have to start by sharing the end goal with them. What does success look like for this assignment or unit. How will they know when it has been met. We have to be transparent in those things. #oklaed
Q6: We need to “own our teaching” as much as our students need to “own their learning.” How can we guide and/or motivate students to self-assess their learning and progress? #Oklaed
Self-reported grades (1.33)
A5 - When it comes to writing, we revise. We revise. We revise. When it comes to text analysis, we revise, we discuss, we revise, we discuss. Plus, we keep portfolio & review growth. We constantly review the growth. #oklaed
A6: I implemented a red, yellow, green system last year. You gauge your learning yourself. If you're a red you need help so find a yellow or a green. If you're a green You got it, so go find a red to help them. And so on. They assess themselves, find their person #oklaed
A5: Yes, they MUST interact with it and Re-do and/or Practice so they can improve. Very similar to anything else we learn (sports, music, band, etc) .... practice 'til it's perfect. #oklaed
Q6: We need to “own our teaching” as much as our students need to “own their learning.” How can we guide and/or motivate students to self-assess their learning and progress? #Oklaed
Self-reported grades (1.33)
#OklaEd A4: How about peer review to find one thing the source did right, one they could improve, with a reason they believe this - followed by a class discussion - maybe with T review and facilitation of significant choices, maybe with posting by Ss to webpage and Ss commenting
Q4: How can we make time to provide the valuable feedback on higher-order thinking and/or what are some time-saving strategies that can be used? #Oklaed
Feedback (0.74)
A6 One way is to demonstrate how we do that in our own learning or our lessons. If we share with them what didn't work in our lessons or how we are improving them can be a good model. #oklaed
Q6: We need to “own our teaching” as much as our students need to “own their learning.” How can we guide and/or motivate students to self-assess their learning and progress? #Oklaed
Self-reported grades (1.33)
I think sometimes when we focus too much on feedback we as teachers can still make it too much about us, we can become controlling. To remain student centered, we need to focus on self-reflection and student feedback instead of teacher feedback #oklaed
A6: I think this has a lot to do with professionalism. We need to care how each S is doing and help them master the standards. If we own our part, most of them will buy in and care (although maybe still not quite as much as us...!). #oklaed
Q6: We need to “own our teaching” as much as our students need to “own their learning.” How can we guide and/or motivate students to self-assess their learning and progress? #Oklaed
Self-reported grades (1.33)
A6: love this question!! We must be vulnerable enough to say what we are learning from our Ss, express honest mistakes, let our Ss know when we struggle, etc. #oklaed
A6: 1) Start with giving consistent feedback or grades (Dont wait two weeks to enter a grade) 2) Allow time to correct or relearn 3)Have them set realistic goals for their line of learning 4) help them see where their strengths and weaknesses are. #oklaed
A6: I think we have to model self assessment. I often tell my kids, well that didn't work! What can I do to make it better? If they see I'm still learning and adjusting, hopefully they will feel they can too #oklaed
Q4: How can we make time to provide the valuable feedback on higher-order thinking and/or what are some time-saving strategies that can be used? #Oklaed
Feedback (0.74)
A5: attaching voice memos to student work for feedback on papers and emailing it to S’s and Parents allows the student to replay the memo over and over as needed. Very neat trick for customized feedback. #OklaEd
#oklaed A6 Make sure we are diligent in sharing progress with students. Even young students begin to understand goals. They can see growth plotted on a graph and challenge themselves to try their best.
Q7: In order for learners to self-assess, they need to know what is considered proficient. How do you communicate the standards of proficiency to the learners? #Oklaed
Self-reported grades (1.33)
Q5 We begin and end everything with the 4 questions. 1)What do we want students to learn. 2)How do we know when they have learned it? 3)What do we do if they don't haven't learned it? 4)What do we do when they know it?
#oklaed
A6: this can be accomplished through making time for self-reflection and teaching them to be honest with themselves and that it’s okay not to be at mastery as long as we are progressing towards our goals. #oklaED
Q6: We need to “own our teaching” as much as our students need to “own their learning.” How can we guide and/or motivate students to self-assess their learning and progress? #Oklaed
Self-reported grades (1.33)
A6 We have to rethink how our classrooms are run...encourage and exhibit a growth mindset. Help Ss feel comfortable with mistakes, understanding that the goal of feedback and reflection is to lead to growth! #oklaED
A6-T's need to take what they do seriously. Give S's a place where they can learn from their mistakes. First Attempt In Learning - FAIL. Don't make them suffer by trying. #oklaed

A7 It varies based on the concept. In some cases it can be simply answering 3 of 5 correctly. For greater DOK Qs conveying proficiency goals becomes a little more abstract. #oklaed
A7-Go over them and let the S's know what is expected of them. If you have the relationship with them. The S's will strive to meet what expectations you have set for them. But you have to have that relationship. #oklaed
Q7: In order for learners to self-assess, they need to know what is considered proficient. How do you communicate the standards of proficiency to the learners? #Oklaed
Self-reported grades (1.33)
A7: Maybe because I teach AP, but I swear I'm the rubric queen. I demonstrate what is expected, I give a rubric that spells it out, and I encourage them to ask questions and communicate with each other #oklaed
#OklaEd Feedback should be specific and immediate. Grades should be standards based and not reflect compliance but mastery of skills. Feedback helps Ss master skills.
A6: We need to realize it doesn’t look the same for every student, some may be similar but every student is different. Good teachers know this, great ones deliver the message in a way that fits the student individually not just what’s convenient #oklaed
A7 Ss of Ts that use @AlphaPlusEdu formative assessments & Standards Based Report Cards know precisely what proficient is. It's 4 of 5 questions answered correctly per OAS Objective. They know they have to get 75% of Qs correct on benchmarks of the state tests. #oklaed
Q8: We often have the same learners wanting to answer class discussion questions. How can we make sure all learners are involved in the learning process during class discussion? #Oklaed
Classroom discussion (0.82)
A7: For projects, rubrics are mandatory. Explaining the rubric and modeling good examples as well as example products that didn’t quite meet the mark can help Ss know what’s expected. #OklaEd
ALL the time. It’s meaningful. We also do a blank page after every major test where they can show me what they know. It shows me what I emphasized maybe too much, or what I missed. #oklaed
Q7: In order for learners to self-assess, they need to know what is considered proficient. How do you communicate the standards of proficiency to the learners? #Oklaed
Self-reported grades (1.33)
A7: Questions are great for this: instead of having them assess their paper with some standards, ask What is the main idea? What is the correct method, according to this assignment? If the S can answer correctly, they understood the standards. #oklaed
A7) I write the standards; I give them copies of the standards; I let them assess me on how I teach the standards. “What did you learn?” “What can I do better?” “How can you apply this to your life?” #oklaed
Q7: In order for learners to self-assess, they need to know what is considered proficient. How do you communicate the standards of proficiency to the learners? #Oklaed

A8: a Trauma-informed way of “raising hands” is a simple thumbs up in front of your chest. Helps reduce competition, fear, and such. But I know there’s way better answers! #oklaed
A8: If you have technology this is a no-brainer! Nearpod, pic collage, google slides, blind kahoots, flip grid, padlet, whiteboard apps (even plain old whiteboards). Nearpod is my favorite one for getting ALL students participating. #oklaed
Q8: We often have the same learners wanting to answer class discussion questions. How can we make sure all learners are involved in the learning process during class discussion? #Oklaed

A8. I have zero fear of public speaking so I have to remind myself that some of my kids DREAD it. I try to allow time to discuss with someone nearby before sharing with the whole class. #oklaed

A8 - I like to use inflatable globes to toss from S to S as they answer and discuss. They have to throw it to someone who hasn't spoken yet until all have. #oklaed

A8: Using tech is one possibility with the different back channels or online whiteboards. Use it as a #parkinglot or #Q/A board so anyone who knows can help... Almost sounds like an #oklaed Chat! #GoFigure
A8: Sometimes I just tell the ones who answer all the time, "don't answer this one, you can be the other kids "phone a friend" then I call on one student and let the crowd or the friend help! #oklaed
A8: I love to have them write their answers before we share as a class. Then they get a chance to add to their response after the discussion. They get two grades that day: one for the discussion and one for the written part. #oklaed
Q8: We often have the same learners wanting to answer class discussion questions. How can we make sure all learners are involved in the learning process during class discussion? #Oklaed
Classroom discussion (0.82)
A7: I don’t think they need to know what is proficient. I think they need to know how to create goals for themselves. “Proficiency” is just a goal someone else has made for them. Student goals need to be linked to real life goals. #oklaED

I love using these things ALONG with discussion because I still get feedback from all of my kids. My quietest kids have some of the most profound things to say but will never say it - give them a voice. (I was that student so maybe that's why I feel for that...lol) #oklaed

A6 Simple elem solution...pull name sticks rather than call on volunteers, wonderwall choose a different student’s wonder each day, pair share...etc #oklaED
A8 Sometimes having a conversation with the Ss ahead of time can help, but if the relationship isn't there that conversation can be difficult. Telling them you aren't going to call on them as often because you want to get more people involved isn't bad #oklaed

A8 - “Three before me” is my biggest rule for class discussion, but usually those “talkers” I assign the role of leader. Therefore, it is their responsibility to get others talking. It helps channel energy & gives them a distraction. #oklaed
Q8: We often have the same learners wanting to answer class discussion questions. How can we make sure all learners are involved in the learning process during class discussion? #Oklaed

A8-I don't like to force S's to respond to questions. All your S's need to feel safe when they respond. Encourage them and actually listen to what they say. #oklaed
Q8: We often have the same learners wanting to answer class discussion questions. How can we make sure all learners are involved in the learning process during class discussion? #Oklaed
Classroom discussion (0.82)
A8: We have to meet our students where they're at. Maybe provide the questions ahead of time for time to come up w/answers. Not all students can answer a question on the spot. Some won't need the ?'s ahead of time and that's okay. #oklaed
I got a lot of negative feedback from my students when they first experience flipped classroom. However, by the end of the first quarter a lot of that feedback become positive. So....sometimes we need to stick to our guns and sometimes we need to listen. #oklaed
A8: Also, lots of sticky notes. I have my kids write their responses on sticky notes (individually, with a partner, whatever) & place them on the board all the time before discussion. Sometimes they just need time to think, write, share, and build confidence to join.. #oklaed

A8: A lot of teacher use some sort of random selector to achieve this. I really view this as a communication self-regulation skill. The talkative students need to know how to value other people’s opinions. The quiet students need to realize their opinion is important. #OklaEd

Agreed. But, it's difficult to achieve a goal that you do not know exists. And, these goals are directly from state and federal law so they must be important at some level - or they should be changed. #oklaed
Well - #TodaysMeet was an excellent way to do this. But now its gone. #sadface. So try out @padlet!! This is an excellent way to give each student a voice.

Oklahoma needs to invest in classroom 1 to 1 technology. New innovations allow Ts to individualize learning. Not all Ss learn at the same pace. Technology helps track S progress, create differentiated instruction, provide immediate feedback, and targeted remediation #OklaEd
Q5 We begin and end everything with the 4 questions. 1)What do we want students to learn. 2)How do we know when they have learned it? 3)What do we do if they haven't learned it? 4)What do we do when they know it?

A8: I ask them to share answers to example probs with a neighbor. That way, everyone is talking to at least one person, and the less confident math Ss can have reassurance that they are correct, or they can see individually what went wrong.#OklaEd
A9) Trying to get Ss to connect the lesson to their own experiences helps prepare them for summarizing readings. Questions sometimes arise from this technique. Sometimes it’s like pulling teeth! #oklaed

A2: I use flex seating so students have choices. They always have permission to move locations depending on the activity. I spend more of my time crafting questions to spark discussions so students are in charge of the lesson and more keyed in. #oklaed
Q2: Classroom environment directly impacts learner engagement. How can we create classroom environments that keep learners interested and engaged? #Oklaed

I hate forced response too; hated it as a student. Forcing me to talk on the spot never helped me understand anything better. As soon as I saw sticks come out, I was gone into anxiety about my name being pulled & would have no idea what the class was talking about 😅#oklaed

I agree to some degree. Tech cant replace a great teacher. Just putting a student on a "canned" application will not grow the student. Too much 1:1 at an early age doesn't help them learn to interact. At least I can't find any research that supports 1:1 at the early ages. #oklaed
A8: I also like doing online class discussion, and we put our current events on Twitter last year. Proud teacher moment was when my “talkers” would bring up a quieter student’s comments online the next day. #oklaed#jrobgov

First we need to change the culture of grades and put the focus on learning. Mastery of skills should be the goal. It is the natural “gamification” progression. Achieving goals releases endorphins, not grades.

A10: I've mostly seen this at PD, and it's been somewhat successful. But in class, it depends on the subject. If we're talking grammar rules, they can teach them pretty effectively once they get it. It's harder with an excerpt, though! #oklaed

A3: Feedback is critical for helping students grow. I love to use grades to show how much a student has learned in a unit, or an academic year. Using baseline data or pre-assessments with each data set is powerful for students to see how much they are achieving. #Oklaed
Q10. I used to use jigsaw in Spanish class for reading about different cultures. Everyone learn about a different aspect, country, or historical event. Come together to share. #oklaed
A9 so I had to google reciprocal teaching strategy. Umm... no not directly. I try not to set up power structures in my class. I even play the role of facilator, not teacher. #oklaED

A10: I enjoy the Jigsaw method because it's important to have Ss work in cooperative groups. I love any strategy that allows Ss to learn new material from each other. Ss don't just work with one group, but a home group and expert group which allows for differentiation. #oklaed
Agreed...tech is just one of many tools in the toolbox. My littles still need to explore and create with concrete objects, they need to interact through play and learn to build positive relationships. (The main reason I would want 1:1 is for ease of login/account use) #oklaED
A11: Wanted to share a couple @AlphaPlusEdu team promotes:
1/ Teach Reading and Writing OAS together. Ss should write about their reading & read about writing @watersenglish
2/ Coor. Math teaching w/Sci Ts; ELA Objs. with SocSt Ts; remediate in PE, Ag, HomeEc, etc. #oklaed
A8: Voting w/ their feet, discussing in small groups why they agree/disagree etc., then choosing a spokesperson for the group. Allows for S’s to make a claim, meaningful convos, and it still allows for those S’s that are comfortable talking aloud do so. #oklaed

A4: Student Conferencing is vital. I set a rotating schedule so every student has at least one session a week for one on one. Its not nearly enough time. I'm thankful we have study hall at the end of the day, so students can return to any of their teachers for help. #Oklaed
Q4: How can we make time to provide the valuable feedback on higher-order thinking and/or what are some time-saving strategies that can be used? #Oklaed

Technology has been a bonus for students who normally don’t speak up in class. It gives them a chance to be involved in class discussions w/o the social anxiety. There has to be balance. Hands-on lessons and group work balanced with technology reaches all learners. #oklaED
