Hi! I'm Kimberly, and I
teach 7th grade ELA.
Looking forward to moderating tonight's chat! School starts tomorrow, so my fave GIF tonight is all about savoring the last few hours of "summer".

My school only provides students with an art class once a month. I'm a terrible artist and need to learn some basic skills *embarrassed*. Where should I start? #K12ArtChat#edt5335

Well I'm in charge of K12 so it's me bouncing from place to place and grade levels we've done a lot of work with new curriculum, learning plan design and artful thinking #K12ArtChat
@k12artchat Improve. As an instructional coach, I am always looking for new, creative ways to IMPROVE instruction and IMPROVE student achievement. The most important part of my job is getting teachers to be the BEST they can be! #K12artchat#edt5335
A1: For me, I think *transform*
I work with teachers to transform lessons and activities, and work in our district to transform professional learning. But, a whole lot of *create* goes into all of that!!
#K12ArtChat
A1 Disrupt. I fully believe Arts Integration is disrupting the status quo in education! The majority of the work I do is with Arts Integration both with students and with teachers! #K12artchat

I believe that the word improve most reflects me as an educator. I am not the best in art and I continue to tell my students that the more we practice, the better we get. I love how art is one of a kind. Nobodies artwork has to be perfect. #K12ArtChat

A1- Create explains Me as an Art Educator, because of how I co to us to create new learning opportunities for my students, such as our Clay Olympics, National Handwriting Day , purchasing new pottery wheels and a rolling table thru fundraising #K12ArtChat
My goal as an educator is to foster #improvement within myself, my students and the school community. A mindset of growth within the creative voice of art #K12ArtChat

As a kindergarten teacher, I always start the school year with play-doh. Students are able to create objects, shapes, letters and numbers. At the beginning of the year, I encourage them to build their name using the play-doh. #K12ArtChat#edt5335
#k12artchat A2: I once did an activity at a PD with straws (and a bunch of other random stuff hidden in a lunch bag). I told each group to build a bridge. SO much collaboration and conversation
A2 #k12artchat Legos- texture rubbing, stamping, building, creating an architectural plan and building it, building something and drawing it from obs, area/perimeter, multiplication, arrays, nonstandard measurements, estimation, shapes

@k12artchat Q2: Many of our teachers use sidewalk chalk for students to practice math content outside. In Texas we have a lot of beautiful days, so there are many opportunities for education outdoors. #k12artchat#edt5335
A2- So for littles just using playdoh, legos, etc is fine motor work or stamping with the legos for patterns or playdih for models of animals/plants with a science unit or...#K12ArtChat
A2- Play dough. It can be used for primary students who are developing fine motor skills. They can create letters, shapes, and even numbers. #K12ArtChat#edt5335
A2: chalk. I just covered my giant cabinets with chalkboard contact paper so students can have that space to create. Iβm thinking favorite lines from books they are reading. #edt5335#k12artchat
Search #K12ArtChat and follow the "latest" feed. When you see the questions, tweet a response and use A1, A2, etc. along with your answer and #K12ArtChat! I hope that helps. I would also encourage you to join @burgessdave 's #TLAP chat on Monday nights at 8CST.
I just read an article about how everyone can become more creative with practice! I thought that was really cool, a growth mindset for creativity! #edt5335#k12artchat

Love the idea of painted
rocks displaying positive
messages! It'd be sweet
to scatter them over town
and around the schools'
landscaping.
#K12ArtChat
A2: I think the 3rd pic are pipe cleaners?
Pipe cleaners make great little hinges when threaded through holes punched in cardboard. Great for prototyping ideas!
Learned this from my friend @manuelherrera33#K12ArtChat
Q3: I could improve my school, district, or community through art by sharing my students' passion for art with hopes that we have more programs available. #K12ArtChat#edt5335
Q2: #K12ArtChat I would choose the play dough. I use it all the time in my sculpture classes, to introduce malleable material to them before clay; also for claymation work.
A2 #K12ArtChat I've purchased Play-Doh so my students could use it to make animations w/iPads. Animation Chefs have some good ideas. Springboard for my students to create even better ideas.
Chalks! Taking art to the sidewalks or shaving on water for marveling the medium is blendable & allows students to create withe their hands! #K12ArtChat
A3: I think itβs the artist/designer mindset. In art, your first draft/attempt/idea is rarely what you turn in or present. How can we spread that idea of iteration into all content areas? #K12ArtChat
Thanks for sharing, Sadie! Love doing that! My class uses @DoInkTweets quite often! We had a lot of fun creating puppet shows with it last year! #K12ArtChat π₯β¨
A3- More art means more student expression and voice! In my classroom that means arts integration to build self regulation, vocabulary, social emotional skills. #K12ArtChat
A3:
During the wildflower trails weekend, our students were able to enter their pictures into a contest judged by the community! They were also displayed in an art gallery the whole weekend for people to view! #K12ArtChat#edt5335
A3: Our campus is currently discussing ways to use art to improve our physical school and the perception of our campus in the community. We have some talented kids! #edt5335#k12artchat
A3: #edt5335#K12ArtChat I want to do like someone else had and make a painted rock garden. We are working this year on painting positive messages on the walls of the hallway and murals!

A3- One way my Art students & I Have improved Our community thru Art is when we, along with our school librarian & our district maintenance department Collaborated together, this past spring, building/ painting/ installing 4 @LtlFreeLibraryβs around our county #K12ArtChat
A3- With a fast paced instructional calendar, we never have time to let students create. By allowing art within the week it will give students time to be creative and free. An outlet! I think it would help students to have more focus during instruction. #K12ArtChat#edt5335

A3- art also improves the connections our students can make. I just found out my littles will get to collaborate on a Scarecrow for a botanical garden community exhibit!#K12ArtChat
A4: I know that students do better when they are able to be creative and express themselves. They can create dioramas for animal habitats, they can paint masterpieces like DaVinci, or they can build in a Makerspace area! #edt5335#K12ArtChat
Q3: #K12ArtChat How could you improve your school, district, or community through art? By promoting art at all levels; while increasing the community art projects we do. We participated in this project last year. https://t.co/8BwEvSzSAd
Q3: Honestly, I just wish we had more art in our elementary classes. Our school doesnβt offer art as a βspecialsβ option. They only have P.E. and Music. Art is great to teach symmetry, shapes, and even coordinates. #K12ArtChat#edt5335
Q3: connecting the importance of 21st century skills to what administration is trying to accomplish across the district! Weβre already doing it! #K12ArtChat
#K12ArtChat A4 Art should never be a stand alone course- blended curricular areas that tap into what students interests are- is where you begin. Choice Art and Themes bring it all together.
I love this! The idea that our first attempt does not have to be our final product. Itβs a great way to teach grit and perseverance. #edt5335#k12artchat

A2 At one of my Spring Art Shows I had students bring and display something they made with their Legos at home. It was a "Pop-up" art display that covered two tables. I also allowed Lincoln Logs, K'nex, and other building sets
A2: At State Conference this past year, Learned about how to use @LegoAcademics@LEGO_Group for Printmaking w/ white paint & blue construction paper. (For learning abt jobs in art ) Architect blueprint! @TXarted#K12ArtChat
A1) Hard one, but I will go w/DISRUPT. I try to get Ss to adopt a positive, resilient mindset thru my teaching. Something to get them thinking they CAN rather than being so self-critical. Arts should be disruptive like that. #K12ArtChat

Q4: visual, historical, cultural, and creative connections to all learning make it more meaningful! Not to mention creation being the highest form of learning according to blooms β€οΈπ¨ #K12ArtChat
A4- Let the students decide how they want to show their learning! If they can create it and explain their thinking, they are learning! Can you imagine how much more excited students would be to come to school and work?! #K12ArtChat#edt5335
Collaborative school wide art installations can be a way to bring people together, create opportunities to communicate and share the power of art. #a3#k12artchat
A4:
When I read this question, I think of a social studies lesson: for example, when talking about different wars the students can retell their story and express their thoughts on the lesson through creating images! #K12ArtChat#edt5335
Q4: I think art can transform learning through the endless possiblity of creativity. Iβve found that some students retain information better when they can transform their notetaking through their artistic ability. #K12ArtChat#edt5335

Disruptive thinking is looking at an object or idea and coming up with an entirely different way to achieve the same end result.
How can you use disruptive thinking in your classroom?
A3: We have to help educate the community about the POWER of art! It's collaborative and problem solving - best was to advocate it to have people make art together #K12ArtChat
A5:
π₯β¨π₯β¨π₯β¨π₯
LEAVE IT OPEN!
Let students choose how
to demonstrate their learning!
Provide the end goal, but
let them determine how to show
you what they've learned!
You'll be blown away by the
creativity!
#K12ArtChat
A5: I can see disruptive thinking being a little challenging for most students but they need a little bit of a challenge. I would provide students with a box of items and ask them to create something that relates to the TEK/objective of the day. #K12ArtChat#edt5335
Just finished a book study with a few teachers this summer! It is important to immerse yourself in the language of education, and teach others how art fits. Disrupt their perceptions! Participate in their learning! #K12ArtChat
A4: Creation is the highest on Bloomβs taxonomy. Art gives students the freedom to showcase their learning beyond a bubble sheet in a way that is truly authentic. #edt5335#k12artchat
Q5: I think this can be done by not putting so many βcriteriaβ on a students end product. As long as they can demonstrate the skill, let them choose the βhowβ. There are so many technology tools and artistic ways to show proficiency. #K12ArtChat#edt5335
A3: Or your Whole school community! When everyone on your campus makes a self portrait. Then you put them all together to show how everyone is a part! #K12ArtChat

What is 1 challenge youβre going to take on to CREATE, IMPROVE, TRANSFORM, OR DISRUPT during the upcoming school year?
A4 Using the design process in problem solving is using art even if you donβt draw a thing....itβs a mindset transferable to every subject #K12ArtChat
A5- Donβt tell the students how to do it, but leave it open for discovery. Create a safe environment so that they feel ok to make mistakes and let them just enjoy the time to be creative. #K12ArtChat#edt5335

#K12ArtChat A5 I have a blended multi-level student directed visual arts program that elevates them beyond anything they thought they could be...It involves all curricular areas.
#k12artchat A6: I plan to push myself to try and create meaningful lessons/projects that integrate with what they are learning with their classroom teacher
A6: One challenge I'm going to put on my students is the integration of technology and how to share their learning using different apps. #K12ArtChat#edt5335
#K12ArtChat A6 I will continue to explore digital tools to push out what my students are doing and to connect to the possibilities that a ChoiceArt program can do to elevate student engagement.
A3 #K12ArtChat We recycle as much as we can making art. I display it all around school. We have iPad digitally finger painted pictures mounted on wood panels hanging in our Fox Lake Public Library
Matt, you did inspire me. I created many drafts and then recreated a final poem - your green screen led me in the right direction for 21st century art room ideas. #k12artchat
A6:
I love the comment you made regarding disrupt - βgive the students the end goal but let them create their own path to get there.β This is definitely something that Iβm going to take into my classroom this year! #K12ArtChat#edt5335
Yes! Me too! My class used them to represent vocabulary words. So inexpensive and middle school kids loved playing with them still! Win-win! #K12ArtChat π₯β¨
#K12ArtChat A4: How can student learning in any area be transformed through art? I believe most students learn by seeing and doing it, thus creating can/should be incorporated into everything they do. Thru math, science, history, etc.
A6- Iβm going to challenge myself to let students and teachers decide their own route to show their learning. Discovery leads to learning that lasts. Iβm going to encourage creativity! #K12ArtChat#edt5335
A6 improve, create, & disrupt-Iβm striving to incorporate EQ & relationship building to building a stronger classroom community... restorative practices with a twist of how art and artists make you feel. Digging deeper into Art TEK strand 3 & 4. #K12ArtChat

A3 Connecting literacy and art is a pathway to visual learning & creativity that leads to new inquiry paths. From art to writing to releasing voice - art is a great connector for all #k12artchat
