I go to the University of Northern Iowa and I plan to be an early childhood educator. I am really interested in first grade and found this chat through one of my classes. Does anyone have any advise for me for my future career as an early childhood educator? #1stchat
A1- In my opinion, personalized learning would be an assignment that is geared to an individuals learning styles and goals versus a generic assignment given to a group.

A1 In a Personalized Learning setting students are working towards learning goals that they have set for themselves in the way they are empowered to. #1stchat
A2- Doing school "with" my students means involving them in their learning, including them in the activities, giving them a choice and a voice.

A2: Giving them lots of choices/options to show what they know. this week we are making our own board games and Ss can decide what skill they want to practice. #1stchat
Goal setting is hard. The reason it is hard is because the learners donāt know what is next when goal is accomplished. We have created learning continuumās to help our learners see their learning path. #1stchat
A2: I think it means making Ss aware of standards, the why, and involving them in how they want to meet those standards. Along with asking them their goals in school #1stchat
Love the choices! Learners could set goals to this then. Have them set a goal each day for what they hope to accomplish. At the end reflect with them and see what went well and what didnāt. What do they need the next day to be successful. #1stchat
A2 In personalized learning the learners drive their own learning. This seems hard, but by creating a goal for them & showing several ways to practice, the littles can handle it! #1stchat

With the littles there will be direct teaching on what a goal is, how to set one, how to reflect and where to move on when we hit our goals. We are the beginning for them #1stchat

#1stchat#personalizedlearning is about empowering learners to support each other! Best part of my day is watching learners award whistle awards to fellow learners for coaching them up!

A3: we changed language. We changed from students to learners, classrooms to learning studios, teachers to facilitators make the learning about growth. #1stchat
A3: I just started with setting goals for math with my kinders and they are so engaged, Ss are moving much faster than if I would just stick to whole group lessons and not have their buy-in. They are so excited to check in with me and let me know they hit their goal #1stchat
A3: we use a playlist model of iLearn, iPractice, voice and choice, iMastery in math! It is like #Daily3math just aligned to standards in the continuum #1stchat
We do also for math and all literacy, makes it a little trickier to infuse this all the time but we also have inde. times for math and reading/writing #1stchat
I think focusing on standards would help rather than following the curriculum. Like @travislape said, having learning continuum would be a great way to support students' progress. #1stchat

A4- I am working with my students to set a personal goal for sight word recognition. I give them the opportunity to name their goal for the next nine weeks which makes them more eager to meet that goal. #1stchat
I agree, when I know fand just follow the standards I can pull pieces of curriculum if needed or ask my students what they want to read or learn about. This seems so much more focused #1stchat
A4: I started with just asking what they hoped to learn this year. #1stchat I want to develop units or at least read alouds that grabs their interests.
A4 Lots of project based centers. Students create what they would like & write & read their report. Inquiry based learning in reading, science & social studies. #1stchat
I started with math- counting and writing numbers goal (I teach kdg this year) I made a continum and they each know where they are and what comes next. Then we developed ways to pratice those skills #1stchat
We are the opposite, math has been easier for me in kdg. I'm adding reading in this week (a little scary) starting with sight word goals and handwriting goals #1stchat
I took @Woods1stgrade idea and created a graph to show progress for writing sight words. My students were so happy to see their progress this month! #1stchat

yes, this is the beginning. I'm adding reading this week and then a personal goal which can be social, academic, behavior (whatever they want) we are taking it slow in kinder #1stchat
A5: I have only set 1 math goal so far and check in at least every other week on their goal. I'm adding reading and then a personal goal. I"m making a personalized learning binder to hold all their information for them #1stchat
A5- We set goals for MAP assessment scores and sight word recognition currently. I meet with the students to revisit and redirect each nine weeks.

I moved to a new school and the plan is to loop to 1st next year, but I"m kind of liking Kdg so who knows what will happen. #1stchat, but I'll never leave my friends here.
A5: I feel like we set goals in reading a few times during a new unit and more often during writing when we conference together, not as much in math #1stchat
yes, it will be in their cubbies with book boxes, I plan on having a tab for personal, math, reading, sight words and just see how it grows with us #1stchat

Most of the choice we've been offering in first grade has to do with pacing and mode of practice. It sounds like most of the goal setting at this level is being done by/with the teacher, which is what is happening in our class too so that makes me feel better. #1stchat
A6 I think it's important to have lessons/activities with a low floor but high ceiling so every learning has a place to enter and be successful, yet still have a goal to work towards. #1stchat

A6- One opportunity for choice is creative writing. I offer Open topics and the students really enjoy being able to select their own topic. Sometimes I offer a range of 4-5 topics and let them select from there as complete freedom overwhelms some.

We've made google slides for 30 different word study units that the students can work through sequentially. They scan in with a qr code and work through different practice activities. They take a practice test on google forms. Then they can choose their own activities #1stchat
