A2 Librarians should consider leading/coordinating book clubs to promote especially diverse books-that the community may not already know about. WE, as librarians, know about all the popular titles and authors, but we often forget that people outside of our realm do not. #txlchat
  • becalzada - Moderator Feb 19 @ 9:05 PM EST

A! Library book clubs would give more freedom of choice in books and more freedom in discussion than a regular classroom discussion of a book. #txlchat
  • cwwatts27 Feb 19 @ 9:07 PM EST
A1 Librarians should lead book clubs to foster the love of reading with others! Another reason is to encourage others to read new books and books that maybe they wouldn’t normally read. #txlchat
  • ktlewis14 Feb 19 @ 9:07 PM EST
A1: librarians can introduce books to different groups to facilitate discussion. #txlchat
  • Ozzys_at_PHS Feb 19 @ 9:07 PM EST
A1: librarians should consider leading/coordinating book clubs in order to promote literacy in general and the variety of our collection! It’s a way to bring students together that may not have done so by themselves! #txlchat
  • becalzada - Moderator Feb 19 @ 9:08 PM EST

  • BenferLibrary Feb 19 @ 9:09 PM EST
A1 Librarians are in a unique position to foster the love of reading with all our community! Book clubs are a great way to do that. Many students don't have time or the opportunity to read and connect over books in any other place! #TxLChat

Q2-Tell us about your book club-how do you meet, how is it organized, how do you promote it? #txlchat
  • lispylibrarian Feb 19 @ 9:10 PM EST
A2 I'm not currently leading a book club, but @cuethelibrarian and I usually have our own "mini book club" where we fan girl over books and then tweet the authors- we keep trying to find a way to vlog them together. #txlchat My school also has one, but I never get to attend :(
  • StarrReadnRun Feb 19 @ 9:10 PM EST
A1: As a librarian, I have access to resources via interlibrary loan, I have space and flexibility. Leading book clubs is a way to connect with students and teachers on a more personal level. It builds relationships. It’s teaching and leading. #txlchat
  • CassieJanda Feb 19 @ 9:10 PM EST
Hi there! Cassie Janda, elem. teacher librarian in Castleberry ISD #txlchat
  • technolibrary Feb 19 @ 9:11 PM EST
A2: We have a book study for teachers -- not exactly a book club, but we read a professional book with teachers and discuss at lunchtime once a week. #txlchat
    In reply to @becalzada
  • StarrReadnRun Feb 19 @ 9:11 PM EST
A1 Leading book clubs can allow us to reinforce that there’s more than one way to read a book and discuss it. The atmosphere is often safer than in a classroom. And because we aren’t assessing students, convos can be more authentic. #txlchat
  • PinkLibraryZone Feb 19 @ 9:11 PM EST
A1- leading book clubs inspires young readers and encourages discussion and excitement around literacy. It’s also a great way to get to know what the kids enjoy! #txlchat
  • Ozzys_at_PHS Feb 19 @ 9:12 PM EST

  • technolibrary Feb 19 @ 9:12 PM EST
Our two middle school librarians ran book clubs opposite each other -- they connected via Skype, Facetime, etc. When Ss became 9th graders, they already knew a few Ss from another school. Neat benefit. #txlchat
  • joliejennings Feb 19 @ 9:12 PM EST

    In reply to @technolibrary, @becalzada
  • Librarianista Feb 19 @ 9:13 PM EST
A2 I have done both, but I like face to face best. It is nice for kids to share their thoughts and feel valued by all in the group. Keep it different than schoolwork. Kids want connections and relationships. Use the comfy chairs...lounge out! #txlchat
  • cwwatts27 Feb 19 @ 9:13 PM EST
My student book club, @bulldogbookclub meets once every six weeks or so to discuss our latest book. Our meeting is during lunch. Our @RoyseCityHS staff book club meets once a semester during a PD day. So far we have held potlucks, but next month we’re going to HH. #txlchat

A2: At school, our student book clubs met in person (in the library). I've participated in book clubs in person & online through Twitter chats & websites created for the book club. Word of mouth, posters, & morning announcements were great promotional tools! Twitter too! #txlchat
  • becalzada - Moderator Feb 19 @ 9:15 PM EST

  • lispylibrarian Feb 19 @ 9:15 PM EST

  • cwwatts27 Feb 19 @ 9:17 PM EST

  • Librarianista Feb 19 @ 9:19 PM EST
A3. I research hottest middle grade reads then look for book to appeal to girl and boy. Then I write grant on @DonorsChoose. Had lots of book club books donated that way. This year I gave kids a choice, but I like everyone reads one book best. #txlchat
  • ShawnaFord1 - Moderator Feb 19 @ 9:19 PM EST

  • Cillabrarian Feb 19 @ 9:20 PM EST
A3: To get things started, I would select a book (usually a @TBABooks title), but once things got rolling I allowed Ss to select the books. With my own personal book clubs, we usually chat about it & decide as a group what to read next. @goodreads helps us decide too! #txlchat

Honestly, I’ve taken the position it’s mainly about getting students together who enjoy the solitary hobby of reading. Its good to get them to meet others who share that passion. Book discussion is AMAZING -but ours it’s mostly getting the Ss together. #txlchat

A4 Skyping with author or some kind of author contact definitely makes it exciting. Last year Kelly Barnhill gave us a Skype bc we read girl who drank moon. She did it for free and I baked cake, called kids out of class, made big deal. Kids loved it! #txlchat

Q5-This Q is focused around literacy promotion. How do you promote books & reading in your school community? #txlchat
  • lispylibrarian Feb 19 @ 9:25 PM EST
A5 A book club promotes reading in the broader community bc you know some parents will want to be a part of it, and then older siblings will recognize the book, and it just generates excitement around a common thing. #txlchat

  • Cillabrarian Feb 19 @ 9:25 PM EST
There's a book club at my public library that I participate in, and each month has a theme, so participants pick the book they want to read within that theme. And sometimes there's people who don't stick with the theme, but when we meet it's always a great discussion! #txlchat

A4) In #PHSBookClub ‘s case, “Read It Before You See It” has done the trick of igniting interest, but having virtual author visits or virtual field trips should pique their interest, too. #txlchat #LiteraryLobos

Q? I agree with..(not sure who said it)...but I've had more success when I meet with kids from one grade level once-a-week during lunch. The kids are more consistent about attending, keeping up w the reading, and we get to no each other better #littlefamily #txlchat

Sorry I was late! We meet once a week for half hour before school. We started in two groups-half read Bake Sale and the other half read Lunch Lady and the Bake Sale bandit. They wanted to debate which book was better. It was a solid tie! #txlchat

A5: When Ss catch you reading or see a friend reading they want to know more about the book. Or they want to share their favs. Book clubs can help spark those convos for a librarian who can’t be all places at once. #txlchat

A5) #PHSBookClub has hosted Banned Books Week, Harry Potter Week, and Fandom Week in an effort to reach students who wouldn’t typically visit the library. This gives EVERYONE an opportunity to visit the library and see what else the library has to offer. #txlchat #LiteraryLobos
