Another fun fact: if infants are never exposed to vertical lines, they never learn to see them.

Yes! Dev processes occur in all typically dev kids in predictable order at predictable timeframes.

A1:I think I had one class on child development at Purdue. I definitely could have used more.
8-9 I have a masters in early c Ed - heavy in development
They did studies on kittens.... and then aligned structure/function of feline eye w/human.

A1: Undergrad teacher training was content heavy- development light which is why I went back to school & got masters in chi dev

IMO, traditional teacher prep doesn't do enough with development, particularly birth to 5 development.
Only got that by reading books as a parent of 3 kids
I took SO. MANY classes on how to teach math/reading/writing. Next to nothing on how to teach CHILDREN.

The brain is amazing and grows and grows in the first 5 years, teachers need to know this!
Prob around a 4 and I qualified in 1998. My child Dev qualification pre- teacher training has been invaluable

Q2: In the time since you finished teacher training, what have been the best tools to improve your understanding of child dev?
A2: Brain development classes helped make so much sense for where kids are and how they learn.
And this, my friend, is why we get along. We are development nerds.
Taking classes while teaching helped things make sense to me for sure!
A2: I read voraciously after undergrad, then went to grad school to study CHILDREN (not education).

I think that is one reason I love the Handwriting Without Tears program- developed by OT

A3-1 I need to work on this area with all my Ss. I have so little time with them, Ss come to my class with so much baggage
had a child who got OT services 2 times a week - mom didn't want him pulled but 1 so OT came did motor madness with whole grp
baggage from other classes, stuff that happened to them at recess or lunch, I just don't feel I have time or resources to handle
A3 8, always room for improvement, but I love our Second Step program & conflict resolution is a passion of mine :)

I've focused more on it this year. We do brain breaks and get outside each day, or do gonoodle too

Supporting physical dev means providing time to intetionally build strength/balance/coordination...Not just recess/brain breaks.

Start w/a good basic child dev text book. I like Laura Berk's work.

We do Reggio at my school. No idea how it fits into my required Science standards.
Each has personalities- "Beavie" is always kind of plodding. Chester= worried and clueless "Doggie" is bad :)

PE, for its own sake - yoga for strength & flexibility, dance for coord. Not just as "breaks" from "real" learning.
play dough, monkey bars, balance beams, sensory play, coloring (with crayons), beading, scissors...

Outdoor play is great too. Having them roll down hills,climb trees, and dig. Builds those muscles.

We do lots of this. I thought Reggio was about whatever the Ss want to learn about? No structure-very free for all.
Yes! It all comes back to OT and fine and gross motor strength!

I actually did it this year -- I added a recess - just kind of worked it in and got away with it

It's the opposite. Child led is not a free for all. It is intentionally creating env & facilitating w/in relationships.
Right? My kids last year LOVED to tree and climb the tree. Our school ground needs more climbable trees IMO.

That's why "child led" gets a bad rap- too many think it DOES MEAN a free for all! (teachers included!)

Child Led teaching is play. And facilitating this type of work is harder than desk work teaching.
We an hour of exploration in the morning. Not free choice, but provocations. It works WONDERFULLY!!
