Hello! Welcome to #3rdchat Please introduce yourself and where you are joining us from this evening.
If you are feeling brave, post a tired teacher selfie!
Hello! Lesa Haney, from Dripping Springs, TX (near Austin.) The bags under those eyes are brought to you by weekend with grandkids followed by two days of testing and then a super fun field trip today...but I am still smiling and ready for tomorrow! #3rdchat
#3rdchat My favorite part of every year is read aloud. We’ve read some amazing novels together as a class this year, and the kids love this part of our day as well. Settles them down after lunch for our afternoon of literacy study.
A1: This year, I have done more STEM activities than I have in the past. I have loved to watch the students work together to create a master design or to see them grow together after something doesn't work out right. Hoping to do more of this in the future.#3rdchat#growthmindset
A1 Ss showed a lot of growth inwriting this year. They wrote Who Would Win books after studying text features and the writing style of @jerrypallotta#3rdchat
A1: Im having a hard time thinking of my favorite. I think it may have been when we researched important heros and students created a board game for others to play. #3rdchat
I tried tons of new things. I need a top 3:
1. Where in the World Field Trip.
2. Global Connections with @MrsBarnett_Tchr and @DonnaWeth .
3. Simulcasted Math Lesson with my grade-level partners on Google Hangouts.

Ss study the way @jerrypallotta uses compare/contrast within categories. Then they choose two animals to research. They also included many text features based in WWW books #3rdchat

Jessica here from Calgary. A1 My favourite section of this year is now. Charlotte’s Web read aloud focuses: Global citizenship, animal life cycles, STEAM projects and we’re bulking up on our reading comprehension strategies. #globalcitizen#iwantitall#3rdchat#totheend
Kirsten, K-4 librarian in FW, joining from my living room and will be in and out while I try to finish some work to meet a deadline tomorrow so I’ve tweaked a phrase from R.E.M. “It’s the end of the year as we know it, but I’ll be fine!” #3rdchat
A2:Spending time with our buddy class has been a highlight of our year. They love the opportunity to mentor younger students. We did all sorts of fun activities from making grinch dust to an apple stacking challenge. It's a great chance to learn and develop social skills #3rdchat
A2: This year fav memory actually happened today. We went on a field trip. Went on a fossil hunt. When we got back to school, one kiddo realized he forgot fossils back at venue. Without prompting a dozen kids each handed him one of their fossils. I *May* have teared up. #3rdchat
A2: This is actually from several years ago, but I just have to share it. A sweet kiddo stood up and asked "Excuse me, is anyone here going through puberty?" (She had heard expression and wanted to know what it meant. Mom wouldn't tell her.) #3rdchat
A2. While it seems so long ago. Experiencing the eclipse with an entire school of elementary kids and sharing that with schools outside the zone is a fav memory #3rdchat
A1: So many great things to choose from but have to say that this year we were blessed with an incredible Author Extravaganza year and got to connect with so many amazing authors and illustrators and I loved how that always inspires student writers and artists! #3rdchat
A2 for Halloween my school had a heroes day. One of my students dressed up as me. He had a dress, lanyard, earrings and glasses. Besides the comedic aspect, I was so very honoured to have a student consider me a hero. #3rdchat
A1: my favorite activities have been from Mystery Science - sound effects and predicting the weather.
I am also loving the research projects at the end of the year.

Such a classic! love to read it in an interactive and dramatic way with kids acting out parts and showing facial expressions etc. Then I play E. B. White’s own read aloud later in the day to revisit parts and vocabulary. Love that book! #3rdchat
Remember going from the anxiety of keeping kids from blinding themselves to the awe of God's handiwork. It was neat to see 500+ people experiencing it together #3rdchat
I read this when I taught 4th grade. Kids read dialogue and had props. The boys all wanted to wear the Fern wig. Looking back that might not have been a good prop, but we managed to avoid lice as a result of it. #3rdchat
A2: When I introduce You Choose Interactive History series to 3rd grade. We call them “Choose Your Own Death” because in the Titanic, the Alamo, WW2, etc many paths end because of death. I crack up when they come in and say things like, “I’m history. I died.” #3rdchat
A2: Something that made this year memorable was when I started doing "Riddle of the Week"s after getting the idea off Twitter of all places! The kids love it even if they don't get the answer right. #3rdchat
A3: I would have to say @Seesaw I love how it enables families to have a front row center seat to our classroom. In close second is @Twitter for helping us tear down walls of our classrooms to bring in experts and connect classrooms. #3rdchat
A3: @Seesaw has been a huge element in our classroom this year. We have used @Flipgrid a few times. Love that and want to do more! We've also had a club this year for our @DoInkTweets greenscreen. #3rdchat
A2: when we were talking about animal adaptations, students wrote about having different animal teeth. One kid said that he wanted tiger teeth so that he could do this or that. Oh and so he could scare a certain classmate...
#3rdchat
a3: I love @Seesaw ! My students want to do it and their parents have commented they love it too. Im hoping to get more parent involvement next year and collaborate with other Seesaw teachers! #3rdchat
That is hilarious! I use puppets from our teacher lending library. I also sometimes bring in farm toys to act the story out too. I wouldn’t have thought of a wig. Haaa!! #3rdchat
A2: cont. memorable - in a teacher appreciation note, one S wrote “Thank you for being my best 2nd grade teacher. 2nd grade is hard for me, but I will never give up!
#3rdchat
A3: @DoInkTweets was a great tool for us this year. We used it for videos and photos. Lots of ideas came to life using this green screen technology. #3rdchat
It was actually a Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz costume. Most simple, farmer hat for Dad and Uncle. Pig ears headband for Wilbur, Shawl for the Aunt. #3rdchat
A3: I have enjoyed using Twitter and Instagram as edtech tools this year and plan to stretch my use of these platforms even more next year with more student social media interns, post writers, and photographers. #3rdchat
A3 @seesaw continues to impact communication with families and build community within my classroom. Not a new tool this year, but I’m always finding new ways to use Seesaw. #3rdchat

A4: I absolutely love my 3rd grade team. @blbrownlee@ashleynpetty and @bswanson1984 are great for bouncing around ideas and sharing our success and failures. I have especially enjoyed sharing with others in our district about @Seesaw with my teammate. #3rdchat
Can you tell me the day/time #3rdchat meets? I found a list to search for ed chats and the only elementary grade not on the list was 3rd, but it looks like there IS a #3rdchat. I'd like to share the day/time with our 3rd grade teachers. Thank you.
A4. By bringing the walls down a bit. Shared writing with an awesome TX teacher @lesahaney as well as some mysteryskype-esque flipgridding with several of our bordering states. #3rdchat
How could I have forgotten that. Yes. #GRA17 was a blast. @victoriajcoe was so active! Loved Fenway & Hattie! Are your joining in for next year? #3rdchat
Twitter changed so many aspects of my classroom this year. My students love to see responses from other educators about our classroom posts. My experience now extends to them. They love being a part of my PLN community. #3rdchat
A4 part one I love to work with my coworkers including @TammyONeil1719 and @schock_shawna whenever I can. These ladies bring enthusiasm and joy to our school. There’s been work on specific skills and supports... and also fun with silly and obscure holidays. #3rdchat

A4 part two I’m collaborating with a teacher in India that I met last year. It’s neat to find ways to connect our learning & share between our students. It’s an ongoing process & I’m lucky to have the chance to work with someone who is so dedicated. #3rdchat#globalcitizen
A5: Too numerous to list! This year, I spent too much time working on foundational skills at the beginning of the year because my students needed that support. However, that affected my pacing for the whole year and the feeling of rushing to get as much in as possible. #3rdchat
A5: The importance of slowing down in order to speed up. I found myself focusing too much on pacing guides this year. Once I came to grips with the fact that we needed more time, so much better. In the end we still got same amount accomplished. #3rdchat
A5 Padlet shouldn’t be used by a whole class all at once. Holy snickerdoodles. Once I figured that out I was good to go! 👍🏽 That’s certainly not my only moment, but it sure sticks out in my brain. #3rdchat
This is so true. Not sure about you but I always start the year planning for the end of the year 3rd graders. It amazing how much they grow during this year. #3rdchat
A5: I was forced into using a MAC vs PC and Google Suite vs Office Suite with a school wide shift this year and there has been lots of failing forward 😳. But there has also been lots of great learning! #3rdchat#stilllearning
Totally get it. If you get a chance to do it, we can connect the kids on @Flipgrid to explain how they solved it. If not, there is always next year. #3rdchat

A lot of tech can be like that at first. We got good at padlet. But took us forever to all work in Slides without major upheaval. Still tricky. Hope it works for my sub tomorrow :) #3rdchat
A6: I'm not sure it classifies as a classroom hack, but this year, I set out sticks with needs for our classroom during parent-teacher conferences. Moving to a new buidling, this was a HUGE blessing for supplies, games, and snack for students. #3rdchat
A6: We recognize students weekly at our Friday assemblies. It is hard to remember who I have given the award to, so this year I wrote all of the students names on the awards from the beginning and then I just had to pick from the ones that were left each week #3rdchat
