The Breakfast Club β #BFC530 β is a 15 minute, 1 question Twitter chat every weekday. We chat in 4 timezones Mon-Fri β 5:30am Eastern, Central, Mountain, and Pacific Times. The mission of BFC is to empower participants to make a difference in education by engaging in consistent reflective practice in a supportive community that inspires and challenges one another.
OK I asked this because in my role this year i've seen a lot of teachers really personally upset about how students have treated them and I've really not known what to do #BFC530
How do you support teaching colleagues who are emotionally struggling with students?

Iβm constantly inspired by so many #PLN members who believe in the critical importance of βconnectingβ as leaders (in the classroom, in our schools, across our districts)...βwarmthβ and βcompetenceβ go hand-in-hand! #bfc530#LeadLAP#JoyfulLeaders#onted#EdLeadership

Listen with empathy.
Seriously, this is the biggest part. If someone is crying and struggling, they need empathy. Once they process a little, then they may be ready for advice, encouragement, etc. #bfc530

Gm. Listening helps. So does describing behaviors and techniques that help , reminders to source out to next level of accountability helps too. #bfc530
I will say that we have a pretty tight department and we all help each other. When one of us is "having a moment" we all rally. Cover a class, listen, make laugh. Laughing is real medicine:)

Reply: Focus. Let the light of student success stories overcome the clouds and shadows of student challenges and resistance. Believe learning succeeds. #BFC530

Try to listen to them and see what are the current fires. Some teachers are overly concerned about small details that are not worth the self inflicted stress. If this is the case, I encourage them to look past the small stuff. #bfc530
When a T is overwhelmed, I listen, give hugs & understanding & let them know that we've all felt this way. Once they've let out the emotion, we can talk & find solutions - I actually think this is a positive - it's when struggling Ts finally reach out for help #bfc530
Be a person they can confide inβno judgement, and no advice unless they ask for it. And please, keep you out of it. Itβs not about you, itβs about helping them through their struggle. #bfc530

support for colleagues ... helping the crying teacher ... must first understand why the teacher is upset ... is it totally school related? is it pressure from above? is it student related? a blend of all 3? #bfc530
Think you need to know your audience when it comes to hugging. I have some T's that I would hug w/o hesitation - others that I wouldn't because I know it would make them uncomfortable.

When colleagues are struggling with challenges and feel overwhelmed, the best response is to listen. Often the solution or inspiration is within themselves, they just need to voice their emotions and feel understood. Respect their honesty and vulnerability. #bfc530
Good morning #bfc530 Happy Tuesday, hope itβs a great one for you all. Our plcs are very helpful and our principal is responsive to needs so if someone is struggling, there is an outlet for all, because everyoneβs been there at some point!
#bfc530 For todays Q: I cannot tell you how many times I have had a crying #teacher in my room. Listening is huge, and empathizing when you can. Sometimes it's about #students, but sometimes it's about a colleague who has not been kind. Just listening helps so much.
sometimes we need help readjusting our focus ... sometimes we can get so focused on that one kid and miss all the kids who we are having a positive effect on. #bfc530
Right now I'm the emotionally struggling teacher & I am incredibly fortunate to have an amazing support system who physically and emotionally supports me by helping in the room or giving me a space to process #bfc530
One key to supporting a teacher who is struggling, emotionally, with students is to avoid trying to βfixβ her/him...journey with her/him, listen, offer empathy, co-teach (if possible), offer some of your own experience/wisdom when it might be helpful. #bfc530

I have dealt with crying teachers often. Sometimes a hug seems warranted. I always ask if they would like oneβit really depends on the teacher and how well that teacher and I know each other. #bfc530
I listen, empathize, and encourage them. I treat them with respect, like family. Let them know you are there for them, to support and coach them. #bfc530
Listening is key. Acknowledge that their feelings are real. Mentoring programs that many schools have are often beneficial to both new and veteran teachers and form long term friendships that will carry teachers through hard times. #bfc530

I think the last thing to do is to give that teacher advice. First just listen. Ask questions. Support them with empathy. If it were always as easy as some sound bytes of advice, the problem wouldn't be complex. Work together. You may be the one who needs help tomorrow #bfc530
Excited to join other Massachusetts school administrator's today @MSAA_33 's Convocation.
Our keynote is @NicholasFerroni. So looking forward to meeting F2F this inspiration for educators and children, especially those who are under-represented.
#bfc530
the last thing a struggling teacher needs is a pep talk ... "walk it off!" ... "get over it"..."just put it behind you" ... let's be honest, just because they're kids does not mean their words are any less hurtful #bfc530
It's important to acknowledge that teaching is an emotional experience, even when things might be going well. When someone is struggling, it's important to listen and acknowledge those emotions. #bfc530
We work with other human beings. That means that at times, emotions come into play. It might be around work load, a critical incident or wondering what else you can do! Empathy is very important but the role of a mentor and / or a coach really is important here. #bfc530
Hopefully in two weeks I will have a Para to help with my 24 first graders...just to have another set of hands for small groups, transition times, and overall supervision #bfc530
When I'm having a difficult time with students who are tough nuts to crack, I think about the people in my life, whom I love, who are also tough customers. I might ask the T how they approach the tough customers in their family and friend groups. Could be approaches there #bfc530
Coaching moves, not "teacher voice" moves are so essential with colleagues. And students! Very few students and teachers want to be "teachsplained" to, in my experience, and I've done it WAY too much in my life. #BFC530

I think the emotionally struggling bit is part of working out where you fit in the role. I see it in many new teachers tis year. You just need to know it's not personal and you are giving it your best #BFC530
You are doing everything right. You are reflecting you are reaching out and you are improving every single day. There is a light. I promise you. You are struggling bc you care so every much! #bfc530 you are where you need to be

Yes -- sometimes a hug from a person we might believe has it all together and all going for them is the absolute WORST thing. Years ago after I had a newborn and was sleep deprived a gorgeous mom in my church mommy group tried that with me. Just say no LOL #BFC530
Be present- be soft- listen -take their cue for whether they need a hand or not - empathy is being what the other needs not what you need, often itβs just to have you in the room or on the phone or on the other side of a text #bFC530
This group has been a total inspiration to me over the past year that I've been joining. Make it part of your morning. You wont be sorry:)
#bfc530
(Of course you could always talk to your awesome Mom!)
@kathyiwanicki is my go to person to vent to. She lets me get things off my chest and then always helps me reflect and process. Then usually tells me I'm being too hard on myself. Grateful she keeps it real #bfc530
And I also believe that "code switching" is part of the mental load of teaching that you can't be taught until you're in the game. I can't have the same teaching style with each of my five sections of students. I have to be a different Oona each time! #BFC530

I am an eternal optimist. Sometimes it's hard to respond when I'm always looking for the positive in everything or looking to move forward. Not everyone wants that in the moment. #bfc530

Sounds like the step back was a good call. Itβs hard because everyone processes differently. I just ask βWould it be ok if I gave you a hug?β If Iβm upset and a colleague asks me the same question, I know my colleague is listening and trying to be supportive. #bfc530
This is also where the PLN or voxer groups come in handy. Teacher friends at a distance can help with local problems. As a new teacher, no matter how bad the day was, I NEVER cried in the building. It was the kiss of death. I got to my car, drove two blocks, then cried. #BFC530

Tonight! Letβs talk about how we help students OWN their learning. Letβs SHIFT think about who has control? Who should be in charge of learning? What SHIFTS can (or should) we make? 8pm EST #ShiftThis chat - my first stab at facilitating π³. Join us! #forsythpln#mschat#bfc530
I check in with teachers all the time. A hug or a conversation can go a long way. We did the Love Languages survey earlier this year to see what people need in order to feel loved at work. #bfc530

Morning, #bfc530. Starting point: "Looks [or sounds] like you're taking something awfully hard. Want to talk about it together? [Or with someone else?]" Your guess for the next point is as good as mine.

I really believe that if classes are open ended and taught workshop style, we can meet all students' needs. No need to label kids. They blossom at different times - if we label them, sometimes we stunt their growth. #bfc530
