Happy Sunday #1stchat Traci from KS, kinder teacher this year. I don't really have netflix favs, but I"m loving New Amsterdam and A Million Little Things on TV this year.
Tonight I will share the excerpts from "Comprehension & Collaboration" Please share your thoughts, reflections, current practice, ideas & resources. #1stchat
A1: I talk about understanding what we are reading or being read to (as we don't read yet) that reading isn't just knowing a bunch of words, but it makes us learn, or laugh, or other feelings #1stchat
A1: so many of my Ss (and Ps) think reading is all about saying the words correctly. I learned from @janmillburk to ask “What are you thinking about?” when I’m conferring & working in small group #1stchat
A1: I like "acquire and actively use," it is one thing to read, but it is another to use it in context and transfer the knowledge to different problems/scenarios. #1stchat
Nick. I’m a Stockton University student studying Psychology and Elementary education. Currently observing a 6th grade math class in NJ and binge watching Marvel: Agents of Shield! #1stchat#gen2108
Reading is more than just looking at words on a piece of paper. There is more to consider like the author's message, the emotions that reading evokes and why you are reading this. #1stchat
A2: teaching kdg this year has taught me how important direct teaching of how to work in small groups with others and independently is or we can;t function, it's finally working in our classroom #1stchat
A2 This is a little tricky one for some students. Some like to let others take a lead. Some don't like to listen to others. It requires a lot of practice to work as a team. #1stchat
I think that applies to younger kids so much since some of them are not used to having to interact with other children as much as they do in a classroom. #1stchat
giving everyone a specific job during group work helps with learning all the skills needed to collaborate, but it does take time #1stchat during centers though mine are working on their own goals, so not all are working with someone

A2: I find collaboration tricky with my Ss. Generally, most Ss want to do the work for the group and get upset with each other. We work hard on working together #1stchat
A1: Thinking back on my literary development course last semester I was taught to teach memorable learning experience. Students should always be engaged and able to reciprocate information after the lesson is taught. #1stchat#Gen2108
A2 I have done a simple coloring activity. As a team they had to agree on which coloring page to color, they each took turn and decided how to color & be happy with others' decisions. #1stchat
mine have finally figured this out, and they know they are going to have to tell the class what their partner said, our listening is improving each day. #1stchat
I really like this continuum & teacher language. https://t.co/bCwsVRz6c2 When I keep asking "What made you think so?" to my students, they start using the same language as well. #1stchat
A3: just did a KS project, How do animals survive in all the different KS weather. I set up buncees for each part of the research which was a lot of prep, but then during I just monitored& helped when ss needed something, was a great project, learned weather & animals #1stchat
A2: I love the idea of a student centered classroom. While observing last week, my cooperating teacher told me about how her student who had just been moved to the school, and how their desk clump has been helping him catch up. #1stchat#gen2108
A3 I think this type of learning is so important. It puts the teacher into more of a facilitating role, giving more control to the students over their learning. #1stchat
Step Inside " focuses on perspective and asks the learner to hypothesize what this person/thing observes, understands, believes, cares about, and questions." https://t.co/RdshbF0frf
A4: It is apart of planning the lessons to provide time for inquiry and to have backup plans for if it goes longer or shorter than the expected time since it is important for the students. #1stchat
A4 Science & social studies, seasonal holidays are easy to incorporate inquiry. We have a wonder board & write a wonder each week. I enjoyed reading my students' wonders about Santa:) #1stchat
Has anyone used Epic! Such a great tool to encourage choice, especially about subject areas. I create libraries for my students about our current units of study! #1stchat

A4 Teachers should find a way to plan for inquiry within lessons and activities. It should be a part of the teaching plan, not an extra activity if there is time for it, as it is important for the students #1stchat
Q5 this is an off-topic question, but please give me and @valruckes some ideas for future #1stchat topic suggestions. Is there something you are interested?
A6: my Ss can pick how they want to show me and they share through Seesaw where I can share with their Ps as well. I love the voice @Seesaw gives my kiddos #1stchat
