Welcome to . Please do not forget to use the hashtag during the discussion! Please introduce yourselves!
Hey, ! Glad you're here tonight!
Hey y'all! I'm Chelsey Troutman, 2nd grade teacher in Greenville, SC.
Glad to be here! 4th grade teacher from PA
So, tonight we are talking about encouraging student voice with & without technology. We'll use a Q1/A1 format. Q1 in a minute!
Q1. What do you think of when you hear the term "student voice"? What does it mean to you?
Q2: giving students the freedom, safety, and responsibility to express themselves and their feelings.
A1 Student voice-students defining their own education, taking control of it and being allowed to do it by expressing themselves
A1: giving students the freedom, safety, and responsibility to express themselves.
A1. Listening to & respecting Ss opinions, gtg their inpt in what happens in class, & letting them help make decisions.
A1, pt2: Letting them help make decisions about how some things are run in schools. It gives them buy-in.
A1. Too much "student voice" meant a headache for me today. Serious answer to follow.
Welcome! Glad you're here!
A1: Serious Answer: SV is giving students the opportunity to help make choices based on their values and ideas.
A1: allowing students to take charge of their learning through choice and interest.
Q2. What are some ways students can contribute to the running of a school? Should they be allowed to?
A1. Allow Ss autonomy. Let them be the drivers of their learn/g. While the educ/s observe, facilitate, give guidance upon request
A2 Leadership teams, student councils, homeroom reps-Yes, they should be allowed to contribute, students need that buy-in
Yes! https://t.co/6J45bHREFR

Absolutely! https://t.co/HWaYTbZpUz
A2 Leadership teams, student councils, homeroom reps-Yes, they should be allowed to contribute, students need that buy-in
A2. Listen to suggestions. We've had students serve in the capacity of assistant principals for a day. Let them experience us 😀
A2: I want students to have a voice, but not sure how that would work at K-2 level. Any ideas?
A2: Ss can contribute by bringing their creative ideas to enhance the environment. Adults have to be open to this first.
Q3. Follow up from Q2: what could possibly be holding schools back from doing this more?
A2 helping make decisions & problem solve solutions using inquiry, working alongside staff. YES it can and should be done!
Maybe ask them about a clsrm routine & how they think it could change. Keep things fresh.
A2. During teacher appreciation week Ss plan and execute lessons. Some w/ a days notice, some a mth ahead.
I've seen class leaders and a mini version of student council in K-2.
A3 Mindset is still old-fashioned, students should be seen not heard mentality https://t.co/CwZTF2KZmP
Q3. Follow up from Q2: what could possibly be holding schools back from doing this more?
A3. CONTROL!!! Not wanting to relinquish the reins. Let go, and let Ss.
A3 time: too much being devoted to assessing, not enough for these types of rich experiences. Also trust- Ss will surprise you!
A3. I think more schools don't do this because it takes time to develop that kind of culture.
At Primary level we create a "social contract" @ beg. of year about how we will treat each other & solve problems.
A3. Seeing the glass as half empty, and not half full. Heck some don't even see a glass.
AND a devoted staff/faculty all being on the same page
A3. Closed minds stunts growth. Mentally, emotionally, psychologically, holistically. Be open to possibilities. They will amaze you
Just as an aside, I have been reading the book Student Voice: The Instrument of Change by Quaglia & Corso.
Q4. Switching gears. In this global society, what are some ways we can encourage when Ss do global collaboration?
In other words, what are some methods/tools we can use to encourage global collaboration via ?
A4 Students should be blogging! https://t.co/PzWksTckGU

I agree Sylvia! Through either a class blog or individual (depending on age) blogging is best platform for St voice!
What blog format do your Ss use?
A4 a good infographic can spread like wildfire. Light the match!
We just have a class blog right now with edublogs.
So, I get my Ss blogging. And I did try this last year in the media center. How can we get others to read the blogs?
and can also give Ss a voice
Just use the hashtag https://t.co/TBANBXV90Q

I actually couldn't get their teachers to read their blogs.
Our teachers & students use edublogs also. I like it.
We do too! Just have to use it more consistently! https://t.co/OS3hL4opOS

I may have to give it another try. A lot of my Ss got really creative. I think I'll start small & not try to do the whole school.
If you publish, they will come! Also, tweet your blog posts to boost your audience.
start within the school, encourage cross grade levels to read and comment, get the teachers involved, too!
Q5. Are there any other tech tools you use to give students a voice? How about during math, science, or social studies?
When we 1st blogged I sent an actual "note" telling parents how 2 read it. Now I collect emails @ beg. of year & subscribe them.
My sts can Tweet their learning any time they want. I collect their responses via Google form 1st for my review.
A5 is great for discussions/sharing creations. Use QR codes so the school/visitors can interact with hallway galleries.
A5 Students have choice with for assignments, projects, etc. https://t.co/g7NvG7vkKX
Q5. Are there any other tech tools you use to give students a voice? How about during math, science, or social studies?
A5. I use , , . Would like t learn about others.
I have just started exploring the lesson part. It looks exciting!
I almost forgot! is another cool tool--and Ss can record their voices.
Yes, I think so too. I created one and I am excited for my class to try it out Friday!
I'd love to know how it goes!
Q6. What about bringing in the arts? Are there any cool apps for that?
Drawing Pad is my fave drawing app.
A6 virtual field trips to museums etc using ! My students love exploring spheres!
A5. Love using imovie, movie maker, they love to see themselves on a big screen. 😀
We've been making virtual paper snowflakes via: https://t.co/ZkSDTbmcN8 . They turn out beautiful creations. So I call that art.
A6 haven't used it with students yet but would also be a fun way to incorporate arts.
All right! We are at the end. Any final thoughts?
A6 also don't forget about /ing! Photo, drawing, music, and video apps rolled into one final product!!!
I think I am going to play with some of the tools you all shared with me here tonight! Thanks so much for coming! Appreciate it!
Good chat ! See you next week!
Have a great evening everyone!
Thank you and for the great discussion! Got some great ideas!
