Tonight our topic is "Winning With Class"...this is an important topic about our professionalism and respect for our opponent
-
I have my belief on how to handle yourself and team that I will share during the discussion
-
-
Let's begin the night with an intros and sharing how our season is going
-
it is not okay to humiliate a team 82-20 u need to be humble about your victory
-
I am Chris Fisher, the founder of and OL coach of Ridge Point HS...so far the season is going well...4-0, 2nd week of district
-
We use a Q1,A1 format for the chat. Please include with your tweets and engage in the discussion!

I'm glad to see each of you here. Lets get going!
-
Q1: When you are winning by a large margin, how long do you keep the starters in?
-
6 games in and doing well! good job! Thanks for being here
-
depends on timing. Usually up by 35 we go one, maybe two series of 0 and D and start rolling younger kids slowly
-
42 kids on roster means freshmen will eventually play in the game. Gotta be careful.
-
A1: Depending on the timing...We try to get our 1s out safely and rotate in our 2s in phases
-
freshmen on varsity? do you have a freshman team?
-
A1 depends on timing. Usually up by 35 we go one, maybe two series of 0 and D and start rolling younger kids slowly
-
Timing is everything...you need your starters to be able to play longer in games, but you want to be healthy and 2s need reps
-
Q2: What method of control can a coach use to keep the game from getting out of hand?
-
A2. Change tempo. We slow the game down. Qbs snap with little time on play clock. Run the ball. Turbo clock helps
-
A2: Coaches can control the pace of their offense, the type of plays, and who is in the game
-
A2 cont. play calls. Less explosive play calls. Rolling JV kids. Grind the clock.
-
Coaches should remember that your team is a reflection of you. How your team performs in victory and defeat comes from you
-
Q3: How do you teach your athletes how to win with class and dignity?
-
exactly...delay your play call and use clock...its obvious you've won, now finish the game
-
A3 model how to win. These lessons occur in the classroom, practice, etc... we all coach to teach boys to be men.
-
THIS is so important to remember! https://t.co/V1AFtORYnD

-
A3. We all want to win. That's secondary. Primary mission is to coach character.
-
A3: Teach respect of each opponent. Lead by example. Enjoy the win, but show the kids the other team matters
-
a3 we have to model how to lose as well! This is often forgotten. Kids need to know how to handle a defeat.
-
Q4: Do you believe a mercy rule is necessary in high school football?
-
Football is more than just stats and wins. Football is a method of teaching character and integrity to our young men
-
It is! Hold your head high and learn from it! Nobody says you have to like it https://t.co/75IUICMMVQ

-
A4: I don't believe a mercy rule is necessary. Coaches should be able to handle their teams professionally and respectfully
-
a4 I've lost 78-7 and won 60-0. The kids want to finish regardless. Running clock is a must though.
-
Q5: What message to the kids is sent when you implement a mercy rule?
-
A5 they know to finish regardless of what side of the turbo clock we are on. It's about pride.
-
A5: If a state adopts a Mercy Rule, I think you're limiting the opportunity for kids to play
-
A5: I believe lopsided games are opportunities for kids that contribute more on the scout team to get to play for their team
-
a5 past 2 weeks we have gotten every kid into the game b/c we've had the turbo clock on teams. Valuable game exp
-
Q6: Is it the coach's responsibility to have the kids across the field in mind when winning large?
-
when you say turbo clock, is this a running clock?
-
yes. We've always called it the turbo clock since HS in Missouri.
-
A6: I think its important to remember who you're playing. We're not in the business of embarrassing kids
-
a6 yes. 100%. It is our job to make football better.
-
Q7: What do you do to retain professional respect with your opponent?
-
a7 everything we can. Treat them with respect on the field. What goes around comes around. It's a circle.
-
a7 don't run up the score, be mindful of our demeanor and professionalism on or side. Treat their kids with respect
-
A7: Treat the coaches and the kids how you would want to be treated if your team was in that situation.
-
We are in the business of giving kids the opportunity to experience success & learn from this great game
-
What do you want your kids to take away from their experience with your football program?
-
Great job tonight! I learned a lot from your insight.
