#6thchat is used to chat, collaborate, and grow with other sixth grade educators from around the globe. Each session we discuss a topic voted on by #6thchat participants. It's a great way to help grow your PLN and share ideas with others.
Hey #6thchat tribe and beyond, I am going to need a few guest moderators coming up. Need one for Tuesday, November 28 for sure. You can respond to this or private message me if you are interested!
A1) I do use some hand signals but find that some Ss will not be 100% honest in their evaluation of themselves. So, I use this method sparingly. #6thchat
A1: Yes; I do thumbs up thumbs down and fist to 5. It is great since it can be done on the spot, but bad because it is public to anyone else to see so some Ss might not be honest

A2) I read about this strategy while prepping for this chat: Four Corners where T poses a Q & then Ss move to a corner in the room that goes w/answers such as “I strongly agree,” “I strongly disagree,” “I agree somewhat,” and “I’m not sure.” Interesting idea. #6thchat
A2 I have used movement with checking multiple choice answers. If you choose A pat your head, B snap your fingers and so on. All do at the same time so it makes it hard to notice what others are doing. #6thchat

A3) How would you explain X to someone who wasn't here today? Turn and share. How does X change or confirm your thinking? What confused you the most? Why? #6thchat
I've used dif. numbered envelopes where each one is a dif. revision or editing step. Ss are assigned #s and then move to grab a new # at their own pace. Easy to differentiate & Ss love the brain break. #6thchat#ela
That makes sense. I was thinking that is what you would have to do. So more for a correct answer vs. how well they believe they understood something, for example. Thanks! #6thchat
A4) Asking "Yes" or "no" Qs; using the same strategy all the time, or only using hand signals; waiting too long to check for understanding or waiting til end of lesson #6thchat
A4: Assuming honesty sometimes; seeing it in a lot of answers from Q1. Sometimes Ss will pretend to understand to get you off their back or to seem like others

A5) I check in after I intro a concept, after I have given some examples, during independent practice and at conclusion of lesson. Some are quick while others I am listening in, and others are more formal. #6thchat
A6) Jot it: post it notes w/example of concept. I like 3-2-1: 3 things Ss learned from your lesson; 2 things Ss want to know more about; and 1 Q they have. Lots here: https://t.co/hE6U6xz3jN#6thchat
My teaching partner uses sticky notes for math. They solve 2 problems, one on front/one on back. She sorts them into both right, 1/2, and 0/2 correct for reteaching. Quick! #6thchat
@mrskochheiser
I don't remember where I found it, but it looks pretty cool. It allows you to see what Ss are typing in real time and give feedback right on the app

@WeverWorld shared that she puts the ABCD on the back of whiteboards so the whiteboard has both Plickers function and dry erase options. Easy management idea. #6thchat
