The Breakfast Club – #BFC530 – is a 15 minute, 1 question Twitter chat every weekday. We chat in 4 timezones Mon-Fri – 5:30am Eastern, Central, Mountain, and Pacific Times. The mission of BFC is to empower participants to make a difference in education by engaging in consistent reflective practice in a supportive community that inspires and challenges one another.
I’m finally here for #bfc530 (thanks to my hungry dogs). Living 10 minutes from my school has spoiled me... I seem to hit snooze on my alarm frequently these days!
One thing I see too much of in education is fear-based decision making. Fear of failure, fear of the what if’s, fear of the unknown and they all create resistance to progress & change while protecting the status quo! #BFC530
One thinks that makes me cringe is when teachers punish the whole class for the actions of a few. We should be working to build positive relationships among our students instead of leveraging peer animosity to change behavior. #bfc530
Not following through with initiatives, so often in education we start something and not finish it when funding runs out. Don’t change horses midstream ! #bfc530

All the pressure put on teachers for their students to perform. 50% of my evaluation is based on student testing..
Yesterday I had a student rush through a test. Even though I went to him several times, and asked him to slow dow, but his score will be in my eval #bfc530
Ts who's lesson plans don't evolve and those who stop being curious about the broader landscape of education beyond their rooms / buildings / district... the "shrug-what-can-I-do" folks.
#cringeworthy#bfc530
I have a list of things, but I would start with micromanaging independent reading choices. We can’t tell Ss they can choose what they want to read then not allow them to do that. #bfc530
Years ago Mike Schmoker coined the term “Crayola curriculum” for what he saw when he toured some schools...kids engaged in coloring worksheets or doing some craft type activity unrelated to actual learning goals. That, and basic science demos being touted as experiments. #bfc530
Or people who think reading is just for English teachers and reading/writing instruction and reading books is only to be done in English class. Needs to be in every class. #bfc530

Good morning everyone- I cringe when I see behaviour manipulation in the guise of clip charts/reward systems that rely on public praise/humiliation. Many children can be shamed into compliance but are in no way ready to learn. #bfc530
Wasting what precious time we have with our kids fussing at them for not having supplies or demanding that they give you something so they can use yours. Just give them a pencil & have a quiet convo later to find out why. Help them develop responsibility. #bfc530
So true and unfortunately that pressure warps classroom practices and—in my experience—doesn’t improve outcomes. Last year I cut out test prep and intentionally focused on engagement and relationships. Student proficiency on my end of year test climbed 12%. #bfc530#nced

Discussing justice in before the break & I asked how many kids experienced that scenario. Great conversation because they could relate (Or implementing clssrm policies that take away freedoms that most dont abuse b/c of the few who do abuse, punish few not all) #bfc530
When parents brazenly form alliances with ts to serve their own interests without regard for the Ss whose needs are the same but access is not. #BFC530
Good morning everyone. I cringe when students who need differentiated instruction for a variety of reasons are seen as a burden and/or treated as such. #BFC530
I am lucky that I am 30 years in and I am confident that the way I teach will translate onto testing. I teach kids how to think.. #bfc530 I don’t worry about every single line item.
I've gone toe-to-toe for 12 rounds with data-crazed admins about the legitimacy of standardized testing. Spoiler: ERO legitimacy, espe when these types of situations & personalities occur. Education malpractice and managerial hand-me-down-ignorance from the state

When people say I’m, he’s or she’s (insert label here) instead of I, she, he, they struggle with (insert label here) The previous, to me, implies we have become the label with no hope of overcoming it or being successful.#bfc530
Hands-on, experimentation, exploration, discovery. Another thing that drives me crazy is seeing a teacher stand in front of a class and "do" an experiment for them.
#bfc530
I teach my Ss to get the answers with what we have. Last year during the SBAC, I had a student point at the closet where the math manipulative are. I had to tell her no. That broke my heart. #bfc530
Or people who think reading is just for English teachers and reading/writing instruction and reading books is only to be done in English class. Needs to be in every class. #bfc530
I agree. We gave the district writing prompt and told students they only had 2 periods to complete. What happened to “we want students to feel like authentic writers”? I always stress to my Ss that writing is a long process. #bfc530

I honestly think I am with my soul brothers and sisters when we talk about education. You people are amazing and I am so very lucky that I found this group. #bfc530
Something that makes me cringe is when teachers assume that failing a student will “teach them a lesson and make them try harder” or that the reason a student isn’t working is because they are “lazy” or “not trying hard enough”. #bfc530
My wife has a different issue w/the lunch room. The accumulation of debt b/c she believes my kids are only charging lunches, but even if bringing in lunch, my daughters can charge a snack. She would love a restriction on what can be charged. #bfc530
Not harsh at all. Too true. Even with frequent drop-ins, some Ts change their style when I walk in. But Ss will tell me, "Carla, you know, that's not how _____ teaches, when you're not in the room."
#bfc530
I tell admins to come in whenever. If I've got it wrong, make me better. They wonder why I don't come get my SGP in September - I simply don't care. If I suck and it takes to the NEXT year to find out, who failed to do their jobs?
#bfc530
Exactly..the same thing..Here I teach them to use whatever helps their brain..she went to get it..like she always did and I had to tell her no. That stunk! #bfc530
And the assumption by some administrators that you are going to see everything on that magic rubric in one class period... which leads to the cyclical dog and pony show. #bfc530

#bfc530
Biggest paradigm shift for me in past few years has been giving retakes for unit tests. The argument that changed my mind was, am I teaching so my students get a grade or learn history. #bfc530
One of my favorite principals @MrsCBurke was in and out of my room all the time. I really felt she knew me as a teacher because she came in so much #bfc530

Student: "I did poorly on the test but I had a really bad day... I can do it.... can I show you...?" Educator: that wouldn't be fair to give you another chance --- Student: How many times did you take the SAT's? GRE's? your road test?
Right. If students didn’t do the assignment or failed a test or whatever, failing them just keeps telling them they are a failure. If your goal is for them to learn the material in a meaningful way, then help them do that. #bfc530
Our Admin are required to have "Informal" and "Formal" observations ... informal are unannounced and can happen at any time and feedback is given and the formal are planned in advanced and have a more formalized feedback. #bfc530
I remember my student teacher days in shared university accomm with Ss from other faculties, this type of discussion broke out. After everyone said their bit, I politely pointed out none of them would be at University if not for their Teachers. Education is a springboard #bfc530
Actually, it is quite nice to have Summers off ... a Spring Break ... Winter Break ... I enjoy that time and I often wish my non-teacher friends a nice day at work while I sleep in during the Summer. #bfc530
The thing about #bfc530 that everyone is missing is that we are on the verge of runaway climate change and we need a complete re-think of the global economy to ensure a just society & avoid planetary catastrophe.
Our interim principal got into every classroom on the first day! And eats school lunch with the students. Walking the talk @sean_gilrein#MSAAchat#bfc530

Such dirty crickers should be banned people must stop watching cricket so that they can't get money .only money is Making them mad so don't watch Cricket what is use of such people to the nation if we produce this type of people
What is something in education that makes me cringe? Abdication of responsibility. If a student is in your building/ school/ district/ community - they are yours. We have an obligation and the p̲r̲i̲v̲i̲l̲e̲g̲e̲ to engage and meet the needs of each student! #BFC530
Looking for a list of ed chats, hashtag, day and time. Anyone have one so I don't have to recreate? Need it for a presentation.... Thanks in advance! (I know someone out there has one already put together! You guys are great!) #bfc530#sunchat#satchat
Resist to change. Rarely should we use the same stuff as the previous year. To get our kids to be more global, we must relate as many things we teach today to current events around the world. #bfc530

#bfc530#BuildTheDamnWall SAD SO MANY RATHER HATE TRUMP AND LIVE A LIFE OF LUXURY OFF THE BACKS OF SLAVE CHILD LABOR BEING ENCOURAGED BY DEMOCRATS, THE PARTY OF SLAVES WHILE DESTROYING THE MIDDLE CLASS. https://t.co/1MtBLe0IHQ
#bfc530 THIS IS WHAT I CRINGE ABOUT WHEN I SEE OUR YOUTH BEING DESTROYED BY SO MANY POLITICIANS RATHER THAN EDUCATORS WHO SAY WE NEED MORE MONEY, BLACKS CAN'T LEARN, CHILDREN ARE POOR SO THEY STUPID. MAYBE IF EDUCATORS WERE SERIOUS ABOUT TEACHING KIDS RATHER THAN USING THEM

#bfc530 THIS IS WHAT I CRINGE ABOUT. the good students trying to learn but the bad students get all the attention, break all the rules and get a pass. if edcuators are not police then why should they be doing it? https://t.co/YVW33WUPZ1
#bfc530 Bad rules. Not punishing the bad so the good kids trying to learn suffer while educators are busy policing kids breaking laws that the police should be doing. https://t.co/YVW33WUPZ1
#bfc530 The lack of attention giving to our young men to help them succeed as they encourage Girl power. Destroying one sex for another is not equality. More of our young men drop out or end up suicidal or in prison. Stop the BS and give them a fair shake.
