Tonight we will imagine we are the Education Czar and can change everything! Our topic tonight is If You Could Change One Thing About.... The questions are posted here and will start at 8:05. https://t.co/BP5lRvrJHl#ATchat
My partner in crime is on a flight out of Michigan and isn't sure he can join us live tonight. He has scheduled his tweets instead. #ATchat Missing you @mmatp
Hi,
I am Sarah and I a doctoral candidate at Florida State University researching assistive tech and dyslexia. Glad to be here this week(missed some chats due to the semester ending as I was wrapping stuff up). #atchat
Just want to remind everyone to remember to add the hashtag to your tweets. Don't do what I just did and forget to add it to a tweet to @attipscast and @JudithSchoonov1! ! #ATchat
This is a huge topic. How might it change the conversation if we thought of it as an effective "language" system?
Pointing to goldfish might be communication, but it isn't really language. #ATchat
I NEED YOUR HELP! I am preparing for an upcoming session on Building AT Capacity. Leave a @flipgrid video and tell us about your team: https://t.co/iyBVpoGPG8#ATchat

A1 - Maybe #ESSA helps in that arena? I mean, it specifically calls for personalized learning using technology including students with disabilities. #ATchat
It seems so much is lost in the language we choose to use to have the discussions. Changing the language can change the expectations (and possibly the outcomes). #ATchat
But what is personalized learning? Is it the prepackaged programs that publishers push (like that alliteration?) that adjust as students respond? Or is it truly customized by the ones who know students best, their teachers? #ATchat

A1 - Agreed! Although IDEA makes mention of UDL principles, we know firsthand when done correctly UDL is the root of accessibility for all students w/o needing permission to do so. When thought of as “assistive” it sounds more like an add on, not an initial consideration. #ATchat

It might be more that the enforcement is not clear/easy. It's difficult when laws are unclear to the people protected by them.
Also doesn't help when they're reactive instead of proactive.

A1: Especially employment! I see HS celebrating those getting into college. Great do that! But also let's celebrate the students who are choosing other paths as well! #ATchat
But transition needs to start as soon as students enter school. We should be talking about transition from home to school, from preschool to elementary, and so on. Each requires different skill sets. We are not preparing our kids for college career and community. #ATchat
This is the exact reason why UDL is critical....If the tools were already available, you could begin using to trial to ensure they are the right fit. This provides a much more defined picture of feature matching. #ATchat
In reply to
@JoanneSabo, @SarahGeissWood, @JudithSchoonov1, @KarenJan
Do I understand the situation correctly? If they have the tools/capabilities already in some of their software programs, what was the AT consult for? I am confused #atchat
In reply to
@JoanneSabo, @JudithSchoonov1, @KarenJan
Well you and I both know it should be the later. @khmmc has this down! #ATchat Like @JudithSchoonov1 said, coaching will help accelerate changes. #ATchat
A2 I think as the tools become more embedded in the environments than Consideration will be dropped because there is not need to consider if it is readily available for all who wish to use it- it will become “automatic” #atchat
Have people think about all the technology tools and forget traditional categories. We now live in the world where no longer assistive technology tools are provided only in specialized software programs. #atchat
A2: I’d decrease the need for evaluations....Trials with data to support the efficacy of the tools should be sufficient. There are times when evaluations are helpful, but often times trials provide greater insight time being wasted! #ATchat
Wait! What if we nurtured passions and gifts instead of rewarding “playing School” for the sake of compliance? Can open- worms everywhere. You’re welcome. #ATChat
That could be part of the consideration - the tools are ubiquitous. Sometimes Ss needs to build their strategic competence to know when to use them or to build their own tech toolkits. #ATchat

#eyeroll#atchat Do we need to do an assessment to allow the student to do Google searches too? It's just part of technology. "Assistive" has no part of it!

A1: Consideration should be collaborative. It should not be different people defending decision. We come together to decide what is least restrictive. Everyone on the team! #ATchat
Collaborative Consultations are so important- gradual release of responsibility. Best is when the student tells you what they need because they feel safe to do so. #ATChat
A2 What I would change about AT consideration is that it could be more informal. More a part of every day instruction. Try it, does it work? Use it! #ATchat
Maybe less emphasis on tools as “things” and more on strategies too. Sort of like the feature matching. Yes, tools are often necessary, but they may intimidate those who can use strategies skillfully. #ATchat
I’d like there to be an AT consideration for teachers & related service people- consider what you need to learn regarding technology to support all your students & how are you going to get that info. #atchat
Student feedback is critical. Who understands the students as a learner better than themselves. Additionally, with proper exposure 2 available tools, teams can gauge what works and doesn’t for each student. I had an convo today with a T about this! Made me so happy! #ATchat
At the risk of sounding like a shameless plug, the New Assistive Tech talks about how to decide which tools should be made available. It discussed Mass Feature Matching using a systematic approach to provide Tier 1 supports. #atchat#MTSS

A3: Bury them less. Make them even quicker to get to. Try removing one layer. Also, it would be great if those were ADVERTISED FEATURES.
Ok, so that's two things. Sue me.
#ATchat
Feature matching also helps better integrate the technology already used in the classroom with possible additional features and the child could use in the same program. Assuming of course they provide the tools needed. #atchat

Feature Mapping also helps students when they leave K12. I don't have to provide a particular tool if I have one that has the same features. If I'm stuck with a given tool, I'm stuck if I can't get it. #ATchat

Our team in Broward County, Fl is struggling with consideration and evaluation. Our State TAP states if teams go beyond consideration, a formal re-evaluation must take place. Some think we need a re-evaluation for everything. #ATchat
And in Microsoft’s situation, I would make the same kinds of amazing commercials they make for AI (with the attractive spokesperson) to talk about accessibility features. #ATchat
Strange conclusion - there are four possibilities for AT consideration. The last one is evaluation/re-evaluation when the team believes it needs more information. #ATchat

I don't know if they'd go for "normally on" for the default, but how 'bout some prime-time TV commercials talking about accessibility features? These YouTube things are nice, but look at the view count.
Mainstream commercials for this stuff now! #ATchat
Just a clarifying question. Do you mean the ability to carry one voice with you from device/platform/program to another one. Basically the ability to always have the same text-to-speech voice? #atchat
A4 - Reflect first, consider what it is you want your students to do and evaluate if your current methods reach all learners. If not, then consider alternatives. But be intentional, proactive and embed! #ATchat
A4 I would like to see tech as less of an add-on, more ubiquitous. I would really like tech to be used to reach new levels of learning/collaborating- not for digital worksheets. #atchat
A4: I’m going to break the rules (again). Purposeful, Intentional, not to just fill out a worksheet. Leverage tech to eliminate barriers for ALL learners without fear or constraint. #ATChat
A4: make sure the task the students strengths and weaknesses and the technology all work together for the educational objective. Never forget the learning objective and that technology is just a tool to help the student get there. #atchat
I'm all for ubiquity, so I'd love to just see it being used as part of the tech. People will ask what it is and how to use it. Minimalist approach.
#ATchat

I've found when I've done that, I get less device rejection.
When you look at it, it's the conversation Q has with Bond before a mission. We need to be more like Q.

I don’t know if I would necessarily want to change it, maybe broaden it. I would just like to see a more universal and embedded approach rather than a deliberate oh it’s time to use technology now approach. #ATchat
This used to be what many people thought, so I can see where they were coming from. But now, we can re-think that model and focus more on coaching people through better consideration. #ATchat
Honest and open-ended reflection in all areas in essential for success. If the forethought to utilize tools are there, it can be adapted and adjusted as needs arise and change. #ATchat
A4- I would like to never (again) have to defend my stand that tech is not a "goal" and that I will not create IEP goals for AT. Tools- for all. #ATchat

Yup. I don't talk about accessibility as much as I talk about usability and productivity. I show the "usual suspects" of tool families, & get people thinking about how they can work for productivity for them & for students. #ATchat
Maybe they should have pencil goals too. If they are talking OT goals... tool use - perhaps. But saying that Ss is to use AT x min/day. BS IMHO #ATchat
A5: More holistic conversations. Students grow up. They all do. How will what we're doing impact where they'll be in 1,3,5,10+ years? Are we being honest about it? Let's look at the long game if we're really here for #studentsuccess#ATchat
Evaluations are for compliance & the IEP process. Consideration & trials & coaching are far more effective but don’t easily fit into the framework used otherwise. It seems like there’s a constant tension to no one’s benefit. #ATchat

A5: Help make research and practice a two way street. That's the people using assistive technology and educators working with them can help better inform AT researchers and they intern help communicate better with the population they research. #atchat
Me too! I'm so glad I could be here tonight! Too often I'm booked on Wednesday nights and I'm playing catch up the next day! Thanks for doing this every week! #ATchat
A5-Time constraints. Educators need time to explore and get their “hands dirty” with the tools out there. We can show them, but the deeper connections to the value these tools come with experience and seeing it work firsthand. #ATchat
A5 actively share what is working, what is available. I sat at a table today sharing my favorites iOS accessibility features. Teachers didn't know they existed and super excited to try. #ATchat
Absolutely- was having this exact discussion w/an adult service provider yesterday. We must mindfully and kindly challenge systems that limit ones potential. #ATChat

I'm in #highered. I'm looking at the game even past K12. We see too many students who aren't ready & who need serious support trying to figure things out. The rules are quite different. #ATchat
Twitter if a great vehicle to do this. I am constantly messaging and tweeting developers and companies to provide feedback and make suggestions. #ATchat
A5: there needs to be more emphasis on interprofessional collaborative practice as well. All in services should include teams, and not be done by profession. #ATchat
I see that all the time. Why are these usability features still unknown? I show the Readability features in Safari on iOS. Just today, at a team meeting, they said they see the lines in the browser but didn't know what they were for. Team was amazed. #ATchat

I agree and that is a major reason I am on Twitter:)! Does anyone else have suggestions for how to improve the interactions between research and practice? #atchat
I brought Apple into my district this year to show the built-in accessibility tools to our teams and the response was great! We presented Guided Access recently as part of a district initiative to our entire staff as an everyday tool...not an Accessibility tool! #ATchat

A6: "Technology" can definitely work. Deepen the understanding through the definition instead of relying on a term that's misunderstood.
Or Robotechnology because that's just way cool!
#ATchat
Yes, and I don’t want to completely divorce AT from the IEP- documentation is important, especially for transition, but I’d like a pathway not so subject to 30 or 45 day time frames. Can be hard to evaluate & get a good trial (or 2) in that time, at least for AAC. #ATchat
I heard this idea once about how administrators should sub once a month. This way they stay connected to the classroom. I kinda dug that idea too! #ATchat
A6: I know it’s too sugary, and not definitive enough, but I’d like something along the line of “participatory practices” or #partnerships for participation” #ATchat
This week I made a parent cry while looking at #accessibility features in @AppleEDU iOS11.
"Why didn't I know this was here??"
I told her not many people know, but now she can be a part of changing that. #ATchat
