Yay! It's fianlly time. Let's get started! I am Jessica Monlux, your #espechat moderator tonight. Who do we have joining us tonight? How were you physically active this weekend?
We will be using the Q and A format this evening. We’ll use the Q1/A1 format to keep track. Don’t forget to include the #espechat hashtag to your tweets.
What's up #espechat fam! Ross from MD here. Thanks for guest moderating tonight @jcmonluxpe! Went to the gym for some bi's and tri's on Saturday and leg day Sunday before the big game!
I am Jessica and I teach K-5 Phys Ed in CA. This weekend I mucked 30 stalls, and during the game my son and I did a push-up for every point scored. #espechat
Megan from Saskatchewan! New to #espechat and tweetdeck but I am learning! My physical activity consisted of me shovelling my driveway multiple times this weekend.
Hi #espechat & @jcmonluxpe — happy Tuesday!! This is Stephanie Sandino here, joining in from Southern California. I’m a ms #physed t (grades 7/8). Low key weekend moving furniture to clean the floor possibly a little dancing in between? 🤷♀️
Kelly Brown here from GA! Had roller skate night on Thursday and many weekends am logging in miles of walking convention centers as my son competes in his final year of All Star Competition Cheer😰😰 #espechat
A1: #espechat A1: Peer coaching is a non-evaluative service that is led by the teacher and delivered at the intensity that the teacher wants. The coach is meant to guide, not "do" AND it works....well
I'm thinking more instructional coaching, which is always led by teacher not coach...in classroom of course never led by teacher, teacher coaches the coach #espechat
A2: #espechat while good for all students, it is an excellent way to involve students who have a medical excuse and still keep them engaged in the learning of the lesson
A2: Peer coaching can be used to help with physical or social emotional skills. It can be formally set up with rubrics, or informally with a quick thumbs up/down. #espechat
A1when I observe peer coaching with my little ones it gives me a much better idea of truly how much they know. Being able to teach it and reflect it to one another. Big win! #espechat
A2) Using more advanced students as extra teachers/aides to students who need it. Could also be co-workers sharing tips and strategies to improve teaching tools. #espechat
A2) You can use Peer Coaching for about anything you are working on. From motor skills, to tactics, fitness skills, to engagement in the activities. #ESPEchat
A2: My mind goes a bunch of different ways. As I prepare for a district I service, I just want to make other T's feel comfortable trying new activities. I don't want to be seen as superior, just serve as a guide. #espechat
A2: Checklists, I have personally used in the gym and they work and are easy for the S's to use ALSO recording with a camera and critiquing each other seems to go over very well and the students love doing it! #espechat
A2: I think students coach their peers regardless of whether it's intentional or unintentional. They give strategy in competitive games, coach/lead by example in activities. #espechat
A2) Just used "peer approval" during my part of my rhythms unit for 4th/5th grade while they worked in small groups on their Beat Sheets. Focused on communication and feedback through the process #espechat
A2 I love using it in a way that helps inclusion & ss voice. A lot of times some ss are too shy/not comfortable to speak up in a big group or in front of whole class. The implementation of an honest ranger & partners helps w this challenge. Everyone deserves a shot! #espechat
Not normally as I usually use it to focus on one thing at a time. It is possible for the older students to try and coach multiple things at once but it can get tricky! #espechat
A2: it's great for a ton of skills. I like to have one student become the coach who observes while the other is the athlete. Then they switch. Coach delivers feedback based off of my teaching cues #espechat
If it's intentional, I think the students are more likely to look at a skill in detail and give feedback based on that. If it is unintentional, learners who may not like the corrective feedback from a peer can examine own practices based on peer performance. #espechat
Myself or the team selects an “honest ranger” in each team that gets to wear a band for the lesson (easy recognition). They help keep things on track, level up, initiate feedback, may resolve problems, communicate w me for major problems, etc #espechat
A3 I have also had students as young as K give thumbs up/down to give feedback to partners. shows that students understand elements of skills #espechat
A3: With my students I have them peer coach themselves skills wise but also positive reinforcement as well. They have a buddy system and have to catch their "buddy" whenever they say anything (-) and turn it into (+) #espechat
A3) During our running days, my Ss scan barcodes on ipad/iphone, and if the student in front of you is struggling it is up to them to help out amd keep the lines moving. #espechat
A3 many times when a S has been absent we ask for helpers at each station to “teach” the cues or the game or activity to that S. All the Ss want to be that helper but they know they must listen be able to “teach” it to someone else #espechat
I don't know if they "enjoy" it necessarily, but take the time to take it seriously and look for the details I'm not sure they'd otherwise look for. #espechat
A4: Peer coaching allows T to focus on Ss who need direct intervention. Allows Ss to learn to give and accept feedback in appropriate ways. Allows Ss to practice leadership skills. #espechat
A4: All parties benefit. Coaches look for details. Performers get corrective feedback. I benefit in that I don't have to give all the corrective feedback myself. #espechat
A3 So far I’ve done peer coaching for sport stacking (make sure ss beside you uses correct form for “x” stack), for new ss who need to learn how to fill out handbook, for fitness test trimester boxes and as mentioned before Honest Rangers in certain units #espechat
A4: It shows progression in learning and can create active learners for life vs just active learners for now, and can create a mentoring atmosphere where they can build on the relationship. #espechat
A4 peer coaches allowed more students to get feedback. I am just one T and can't get to everyone most days. Peer coaches tracked S progress on checklists. I was able to review those and focus with students the next class who needed more help #espechat
A4 With peer teaching ss really need to have a decent grasp on what is to be learned, the responsibility is handed over to them. It allows for verbal communication (social-emotional piece). Creates peer feedback which is more important than mine most of the time! #espechat
A5) Peer coaching can help Ss stay focused on performance criteria. It can also help Ss receive feedback. Coachs can sometimes communicate in a way that the performer understands. #espechat
I was talking to another T and he said he doesn't use peer coaching because he doesn't want to put all Ss on the spot because they would be uncomfortable. #espechat
Sounds like we need to have an intervention for this teacher... #ESPEchat You can always build up the students if you are worried they will feel uncomfortable. Peer Assess something easy.
A5 In a class of 50 ms ss it can be easy to blend into your surroundings. Peer coaching has the ability to engage, the best part is the info is coming from another ss. They can speak “ms”, more than I’ll ever be able to! It’s a win win, they teach it + learning #espechat
I usually let them work with someone they are comfortable with. Usually they don't take any feedback personal or even worse...ignore it. I let them decide. Although I'm the "expert", sometimes feedback is best explained by someone your age in terms they understand. #espechat
Having the comfort level there already can make a huge difference! Have you tried having them peer coach w someone different on an easy task for practice? #espechat
A6) This year everyone of my classes seems to have a couple Ss that are willing to help those specific students amd enjoy being their helper. This is a great boost for me. #espechat
A6) Provide extra support for that Ss. Like having another Ss help them be the coach. Make sure the extra Ss includes them in coaching instead of just doing it themselves. #ESPEchat
By this point in the year they have worked well together and know how each other works so i have found it best to keep them together. Other times I have switched back and forth to give a variety of examples. #espechat
A6 I’ve been a big fan of the buddy system this year, there’s no rule that says peer coaching is one-on-one! Strategic pairing also helps in some cases, I know some ss are very willing, kind and compassionate. #espechat
A:6 I modify the directions for some students . I give easier cues when they are the coach. I also like to make sure peers switch peers every few minutes or activities. #espechat
A7) Need to go make my copies for my Ss to watch each other this week. Anyone have a peer assessment worksheet for jumping rope forwards & backwards? #espechat
I would assign. I don't know if my students would grasp that yet. Maybe my 4th graders, but I think that's something I would feel like I need to take charge of. #espechat
A6) Getting ready to move into manipulative ball skills soon. Can easily have younger Ss partner up and watch one another perform skills looking for one element at a time. #espechat
A7) Getting ready to move into manipulative ball skills soon. Can easily have younger Ss partner up and watch one another perform skills looking for one element at a time. #espechat
A7: my students can peer coach simple gymnastics skills this week like the log roll, pencil roll etc. There are lots of learning cues involved to learn. #espechat
A7: As I am pre-service and just completely my degree and unfortunately do not have my own classroom/gym yet. I do not have any lessons to implement PC into but I really want to work with the App Coaches Eye. #espechat
A7) For older Ss focusing more on creating space during ball skills, can have peers make a "movement map" on where they traveled during activity and give feedback based on it #espechat
A7 For my volley tennis unit I’m kind of thinking of having weekly Honest Rangers focusing on different aspects each day (ie movement in anticipation of a volley/spike), support of teammates, bump pass, use of diff equipment #espechat
Cues on the board but mainly cues on laminated paper right in front of the Ss near the mats they are working on. Easier to look at the paper directly in front of them rather than so far away. #espechat
