A1 everyone shows up and works hard. A lot of that hard work can’t be seen or can go unnoticed, so when we celebrate the moments that truly show a success, it is deeply meaningful to those who know the whole story #MEMSPAchat
  • scottpanozzo Apr 12 @ 8:09 PM EDT

  • lmcdonell14 Apr 12 @ 8:12 PM EDT
A1) we have to cheer each other on, so we can focus on positive energy generating through our school. It is more fun to get excited about others rather Just feel competitive. #MEMSPAchat
  • GregJWolcott Apr 12 @ 8:13 PM EDT
A1: Celebeating the success of others is a key aspect to developing self-efficacy. Knowing someone like me can achieve great things helps me believe I can. Oh, yeah...and the other person feels a sense of belonging as well! #MEMSPAchat
  • mattseverin Apr 12 @ 8:13 PM EDT
    A1: If we don't, who will?! #MEMSPAchat

Q2: What criteria does your school use to give student awards at the end of the year? #MEMSPAchat
  • scottpanozzo Apr 12 @ 8:16 PM EDT
A2- grades, behavior, attendance and character! #MEMSPAchat
  • jon_wennstrom Apr 12 @ 8:17 PM EDT

  • Dale_Chu Apr 12 @ 8:17 PM EDT
    Well said, Becky! #MEMSPAchat
    In reply to @MPSbiedermann
  • PrincipalFrench Apr 12 @ 8:17 PM EDT
A2) Good question. We actually don’t give student awards at the end of the year. Isn’t it better to give awards all year long? We need to recognize students at the beginning, middle, and end of the year. #MEMSPAchat
  • TeachMrB Apr 12 @ 8:18 PM EDT
A2) PRIDE. Grades, behavior, and character awards. #MEMSPAchat
  • GregJWolcott Apr 12 @ 8:18 PM EDT
A2: End of the year awards are great based on accomplishment and achievement but recognition of growth and progress is more important when students are in the “learning pit” during those tough days during the year when the end is not in sight. #MEMSPAchat
  • lmcdonell14 Apr 12 @ 8:18 PM EDT
A2) Scholarly excellence, the arts, and citizenship related. Teachers vote on some. #MEMSPAchat
  • Joshua_Haggerty Apr 12 @ 8:19 PM EDT
A2: Last year we added a Super 3 Award. Students have earned 3.0 or above and participated in three or more sports/clubs. An amazing group of students. #Determined #MEMSPAchat
  • KatQuain Apr 12 @ 8:19 PM EDT
A2: we reward students throughout the year for behavior...model positive behavior and show leadership and improvement are all characteristics. We also do quarterly for attendance. #MEMSPAchat
  • MEMSPAchat Apr 12 @ 8:20 PM EDT
Hey #MEMSPAchat - Question 3 is on deck
  • richbacolor Apr 12 @ 8:20 PM EDT
A1: There are already enough people trying to sell the false narrative that Michigan’s public schools are failures. We must celebrate our successes and build on our strengths with the communities we serve. #MEMSPAchat
  • MPSbiedermann Apr 12 @ 8:20 PM EDT
A2-being my first year here, I'm not sure. As a teacher it was always a variety; academic, character, behavior, athletic, a variety! I think it's important to have a variety of categories. Many ways for Ss to succeed. #MEMSPAchat
  • Syndee_Sue Apr 12 @ 8:20 PM EDT
A2) We had a Principal's Award that was a memorial to a former student, the family in 1972 formed criteria. That criteria made it through 9 admins in my former building. 1 boy, 1 girl, the wall in the school represents the history. It was for the average Joe! :)#MEMSPAchat
  • ForestPrincipal Apr 12 @ 8:20 PM EDT
    Moving in! #MEMSPAchat
    In reply to @Syndee_Sue
  • kwall628 Apr 12 @ 8:20 PM EDT

  • MrDomagalski - Moderator Apr 12 @ 8:21 PM EDT
Q3: In what ways do you celebrate students successes and accomplishments at the end of the school year? #MEMSPAchat
  • Timothy_C_Lee Apr 12 @ 8:22 PM EDT
We is greater than me! This is a way to develop a positive, supportive school culture. #MEMSPAchat
    In reply to @MrDomagalski
  • mschulte50 Apr 12 @ 8:22 PM EDT
#memspachat A2;Thanks to strong leadership from our principal @OtterbacherM, we are moving away from "8th grade awards" and starting with 'projects' that tell about the student
  • MEMSPAchat Apr 12 @ 8:23 PM EDT
Awards Nights? Large events? Classroom event? grade level? All school? #MEMSPAchat
  • DreaWeiner Apr 12 @ 8:24 PM EDT
A3: Right now we're planning a big event for Ts and Ss to be recognized via a banquet. #MEMSPAchat
  • TeachMrB Apr 12 @ 8:25 PM EDT
A3) We have a PRIDE party for those that finished the 4th quarter with 0 detentions, suspensions, or referrals. 7/8 have more individual awards to celebrate students. #MEMSPAchat
  • MEMSPAchat Apr 12 @ 8:26 PM EDT
#MEMSPAchat is rockin tonight - Question 4 is coming up!
  • MrEugenePark Apr 12 @ 8:26 PM EDT
    Gene, jumping in late. #MEMSPAchat
  • Joshua_Haggerty Apr 12 @ 8:26 PM EDT
A3: Each grade level team holds an awards assembly during the school day. Parents receive a formal invitation. We found we have better parent and student attendance. #MEMSPAchat
  • MPSbiedermann Apr 12 @ 8:26 PM EDT
A3-We do school-wide assemblies to acknowledge positive behavior each month. Ts do their own personal "awards" in their classrooms at the end of the year (I think). Does anyone do a school-wide "awards" at the end of the year? #MEMSPAchat
  • KatQuain Apr 12 @ 8:26 PM EDT
7 Habits program has set the stage for acknowledging student accomplishments and growth. We highlight students throughout but have used our 5th graders to really provide leadership to younger students and promote habits through video projects at the end of the year. #MEMSPAchat
  • Syndee_Sue Apr 12 @ 8:26 PM EDT
A4) . At the end of the year, we had a celebration out on the lawn of the school, where students, parents and teachers came together to celebrate. We clap our kids in at the beginning and clap them out at the end. #MEMSPAchat
  • kwall628 Apr 12 @ 8:26 PM EDT
    A3: We have a K-2 then a 3-5 assembly during the school day #MEMSPAchat
  • MrDomagalski - Moderator Apr 12 @ 8:27 PM EDT

    In reply to @MrDomagalski
  • DreaWeiner Apr 12 @ 8:29 PM EDT
Q4: Who is pushing the envelope? Who is being the best T they can be for their Ss? Who is willing to try and fail? #MEMSPAchat
    • MrDomagalski - Moderator Apr 12 @ 8:27 PM EDT
Q4: What criteria would you (or do you) use as a school leader if you were to nominate a teacher for any kind of “Teacher of the Month/Year” Award? #MEMSPAchat
  • jon_wennstrom Apr 12 @ 8:30 PM EDT
A4: I shy away from "Teacher of the Month" awards. I feel they create competition/division. I try to celebrate teachers at meetings, through my parent blog, & in person. #MEMSPAchat
    • MrDomagalski - Moderator Apr 12 @ 8:27 PM EDT
Q4: What criteria would you (or do you) use as a school leader if you were to nominate a teacher for any kind of “Teacher of the Month/Year” Award? #MEMSPAchat
  • lmcdonell14 Apr 12 @ 8:30 PM EDT

  • MPSbiedermann Apr 12 @ 8:31 PM EDT
A4: Positive attitude, willingness to try new things, steps out of their comfort zone and willingness to share their success and their failures with our staff #MEMSPAchat

Q4. Leadership, relationship building with kids, staff and families, risk taking, innovation, collaboration #MEMSPAchat
  • mschulte50 Apr 12 @ 8:31 PM EDT
#memspachat. Love this. We clapped the parents out after teh appreciation breakfast, and then clapped the 5th graders out on their last day. And the students gave a standing O for the staff
    • Syndee_Sue Apr 12 @ 8:26 PM EDT
A4) . At the end of the year, we had a celebration out on the lawn of the school, where students, parents and teachers came together to celebrate. We clap our kids in at the beginning and clap them out at the end. #MEMSPAchat

  • MEMSPAchat Apr 12 @ 8:32 PM EDT
Half way done! #MEMSPAchat Question 5 is up next!
  • DreaWeiner Apr 12 @ 8:32 PM EDT
RELATIONSHIPS! So much of being an educator relies on being a good relationship builder. #MEMSPAchat
    In reply to @MrEugenePark
  • mattseverin Apr 12 @ 8:32 PM EDT
A4: I am building a gratitude wall where we celebrate each other, often. I want my team to see the greatness that happens daily and to be grateful for even the simple things in our school. #MEMSPAchat
  • kwall628 Apr 12 @ 8:32 PM EDT
A4: I don't know that I would do "Teacher of the ___" awards. I do think all leaders value putting students first, upholding the mission/vision of the school, being a lifelong learner, and being innovative. These traits are celebrated throughout the year. #MEMSPAchat
    • MrDomagalski - Moderator Apr 12 @ 8:27 PM EDT
Q4: What criteria would you (or do you) use as a school leader if you were to nominate a teacher for any kind of “Teacher of the Month/Year” Award? #MEMSPAchat

    In reply to @MrDomagalski
  • TeachMrB Apr 12 @ 8:32 PM EDT

    • MrDomagalski - Moderator Apr 12 @ 8:27 PM EDT
Q4: What criteria would you (or do you) use as a school leader if you were to nominate a teacher for any kind of “Teacher of the Month/Year” Award? #MEMSPAchat

A4: a staff member who is positive, collaborates with their colleagues, takes risks, thinks outside of the box, and takes ownership of every child in the building! #MEMSPAchat
  • mschulte50 Apr 12 @ 8:34 PM EDT
#memspachat A4:Look at the faces of the students as they learn. That will tell you all u need to know.
  • Timothy_C_Lee Apr 12 @ 8:35 PM EDT
A4: Someone that goes above and beyond each day for kids. I don’t have a criteria, but the teacher would be someone that supports everyone in the building, students and staff. #MEMSPAchat
    In reply to @MrDomagalski
  • GregJWolcott Apr 12 @ 8:35 PM EDT
A4: IMO we should NEVER give this type of award. No one is successful on his or her own. We all stand on the shoulders of others. Those awards don’t build teams they build & entrain independent contractor mentality. No one is successful if we are not all successful!! #MEMSPAchat
  • mschulte50 Apr 12 @ 8:35 PM EDT
#memspachat A4: I also did a spotlight on each staff member in my weekly parent newsletter. While this wasn't an award, it did bring recognition to each staff member.
  • Joshua_Haggerty Apr 12 @ 8:36 PM EDT
A5: Last year I took a couple hours during teacher appreciation week and wrote a personal note to each teacher with reasons why they make our school amazing. #MEMSPAchat
  • Timothy_C_Lee Apr 12 @ 8:36 PM EDT

  • MPSbiedermann Apr 12 @ 8:36 PM EDT
A5: Throughout this year I've fed them, offered gift card drawings and written notes. But I'm looking to my PLN here for the end of the year!!! What are some ways to celebrate at the end of the year? I'm all ears #MEMSPAchat
  • Cardwell16 Apr 12 @ 8:37 PM EDT
A4: During monthly student PBIS award assembly, we also draw names of staff who have been nominated by fellow staff members and give small gift cards to them. It’s opportunity for staff to honor PBIS winners AND students to honor the staff who make it all possible!#MEMSPAchat
  • CraigMcCalla24 Apr 12 @ 8:38 PM EDT
Craig McCalla, from Dexter, checking in late. A5: I give them notes and we celebrate positive things as a group. I also bring food and they love cooler week! #MEMSPAchat
  • KatQuain Apr 12 @ 8:38 PM EDT
This is an area I would like to do more for...we have started the idea of a “Bravo Board” to recognize great things teachers do and acknowledge building successes at the end of the year but I know there is more to be done. #MEMSPAchat
  • MEMSPAchat Apr 12 @ 8:39 PM EDT
Question 6 is on deck on #MEMSPAchat - Get ready!
  • mschulte50 Apr 12 @ 8:39 PM EDT

  • kwall628 Apr 12 @ 8:39 PM EDT
A5: I need some more ideas for this! I plan to give a handwritten note to each staff member thanking them for their dedication and contributions throughout the year. Loving some of the ideas I'm getting from my PLN tonight! #MEMSPAchat
  • MrDomagalski - Moderator Apr 12 @ 8:40 PM EDT
Q6: In what ways do you celebrate or thank parents and/or community members at the end of the school year? #MEMSPAchat
  • jon_wennstrom Apr 12 @ 8:42 PM EDT

A6) . We had a Volunteer BBQ Potluck that the staff brought the sides and I flipped the dogs, we kept a list from the begin of yr and did handwritten invites, list grew each yr as well as the BBQ! Did this at begin of May so not to compete with yr end events #MEMSPAchat
  • mschulte50 Apr 12 @ 8:43 PM EDT
#memspachat A6: I continued the tradition of inviting all who felt they helped, we gave them breakfast, Ss sang to them, then the whole school lined up and clapped them out.
  • GregJWolcott Apr 12 @ 8:43 PM EDT
A5: Love staff to staff recognition. Spending time recognizing each other. We have used a fake Grammy award that gets passed around every week. Awesome to hear what they value and recognize in one another. #MEMSPAchat
  • MPSbiedermann Apr 12 @ 8:43 PM EDT
A6: I send emails, make phone calls, individual conversations, PTO meeting etc, but I'd love ideas on how to do this on a larger scale... #MEMSPAchat
  • jon_wennstrom Apr 12 @ 8:44 PM EDT
All of the above. Blog link is emailed to all families (and anyone else who gives email) and post on FB & Twitter! #MEMSPAchat
