Monthly Twitter chats on topics of interest to educators who want to share ideas, build their professional learning networks, connect and converse about tech in NYC Schools.
I'm joining tonight's #NYCSchoolsTechChat live from Harlem, NYC. I'm a bit under the weather, so I have a box of tissues at my side and Twitter at my fingertips.
Couldn't get a parking spot today at the gym, so I have to wait until all the resolution people clear out before I'll be able to get back in there. Dammit. #NYCSchoolsTechChat.
A1 Scratch 3.0 https://t.co/pGFT2QgGJG yes it teaches coding but don’t be limited to that thinking. Consider it a tool for interactive reports, animations, and all around creativity.

Yes! And I’m waiting for the coming accelerometer and other MIT tools to come that allow students to build interaction with their programs. #NYCSchoolsTechChat
I want my sixth graders from this year to build one for navigating our school for next year's sixth graders. Middle school can be scary. #NYCSchoolsTechChat
A1: As an elem ed teacher, I love @brainpop. I use the jr with my little ones, my older Ss find Tim and Moby super engaging, and even our ESL teacher uses it in her sessions. I teach into how to actively watch the videos and make use of all the tools within. #NYCSchoolsTechChat
My students always want to go to play on Scratch, and I thought they were creating games. Turns out they just want to play other kids' games that they created already. #NYCSchoolsTechChat

I’ve definitely had some a cool time creating some local travel training experiences for kids in Tour Creator. I’ve only just begun playing with Poly and Tilt Brush to create more in it. #NYCSchoolsTechChat
It’s definitely a go to for content introduction and now they have a bunch of digital projects students can create to measure mastery instead of just a quiz #NYCSchoolsTechChat
my fav tool so far @canva integrated into social studies lesson with 2nd grade and Ts used tool many times since for math and reading...so many ways to create using @canva#NYCSchoolsTechChat
A2: have been exploring @Metaverse for my college class, looking to continuously add gamification into my course plan... #AR#NYCSchoolsTechChat anyone use it and have insights?
A2 I love Google Arts & Culture. Many students only know their culture and if they don’t experience others they can’t broaden their minds. All classes should experience Art and Culture to challenge their own views.
#NYCSchoolsTechChat
A2: Some of those on that list (like Waypoint) are hard to make use of in most classes. I already mentioned #MinecraftEdu creating memorable learning across content and grade levels. I’ve liked both @MetaverseApp and @PlantSnap for engaging community walks #NYCSchoolsTechChat

Happy New Year Tech educators! Cynthia here, elementary STEM teacher in Brooklyn NY. Relatively new to twitter and joining my 1st Tech chat. #NYCSchoolsTechChat
I have used @googlearts with my students and held workshops for teachers on how to utilize. It’s a great way to bring social studies to life and have students feel like they’re actually walking thru the real museum! #NYCSchoolsTechChat

My favorite this year has been @boardmaker@TobiiDynavox because my students require so many visuals to adapt for their learning needs. I can import pictures to individualize. I can also take data and print out books and activities. https://t.co/nbGk37ahui#NYCSchoolsTechChat

I love @Flipgrid. I just did a parent engagement activity where my students read and acted out fairytales with their families. We have a QR code in our library that links to it for the students to watch. #NYCSchoolsTechChat

One day you and I can have a long conversation about the nature of PECS-a bold post I haven’t yet finished. A lot of interesting stuff there. Does your school have individual Boardmaker accounts or just you? Do you use the curriculum at all? #NYCSchoolsTechChat

And it integrates with google cardboard. Such a great way to bring VR into the classroom! Fun for students, but also super purposeful! Definitely the kind of thing that would excite your admin if they walked in! 😉👍🏼 #NYCSchoolsTechChat

Tried Mystery Science this year. Provides engaging lessons with built in discussion questions and activities. Great springboard for related science topics. https://t.co/Ha4xHJsW8N#NYCSchoolsTechChat

We"ve been struggling because our teachers and students are very dependent on Boardmaker and we can no longer afford it. Have been looking for alternatives. #NYCSchoolsTechChat

A2 My favorite is @khanacademy . I used it for math and to study for Biology. Now I use it with my son - middle school math and with my students for grammar as a supplement in our ELA class. Great Article @CommonSenseEd#NYCSchoolsTechChat
We have a district account. When I originally set the accounts up, I linked them so we can share files between. The curriculums they have we use as resources for our curriculum. #NYCSchoolsTechChat

Has anyone made use of the online interactive parts of Boardmaker or has it mostly been for printables? Does anyone find the Flash an issue? I spoke to folks at Tobii who said it should be upgraded but no timeline-hopefully before Flash dies #NYCSchoolsTechChat

I did for District 75 and we’re set to have a celebration in May, but I’m not sure where else there would be a broad opportunity-maybe a GEG Meetup or something unless @InnovativeEdu knows...I’m already committed to doing Sphero for the STEM Institute. #NYCSchoolsTechChat
I use the interactive features. I typically do not have issues. I also have a student with a @TobiiDynavox Indii and I love that it loads it. I use the student center on iPads. #NYCSchoolsTechChat

It’s good for creating some basic AR interactions, but I’ve really come to like @cospaces_edu for creating really awesome AR/VR experiences for students. #NYCSchoolsTechChat
@BrainPOP does require a subscription, but there is some content that is free along with different free daily videos. The whole #digcit curriculum is free though #NYCSchoolsTechChat
A4: First is cost - it should be free, or almost free! Only then can it be considered if it has educational benefits for student, and is not too challenged to utilize in the classroom. @GoogleForEdu is the best at all of the above!!!! #nycschoolstechchat
If you’ve tried @tinkercad for 3D printing, you can use @cospaces_edu then if you’re up for it, you can do some programming for interaction (block-based if you need it) #NYCSchoolsTechChat

A4 When choosing an #edtech tool I try to think of the most effective, innovative, and usually cost-effective way to accomplish a goal. I strive for engagement from students as well. #NYCSchoolsTechChat
Exactly! I always think about the underlying skills I want Ss to walk away with when the unit is done. There are so many #edtech tools that can be used (from free to paid). If you think about the skills first, then you can select the best tools. #NYCSchoolsTechChat
And to add to that, is there an opportunity for Ss to become producers? So much time is already spent on consuming content and Ss already do that without us...so are we teaching them to produce and make the content they want to see in the world? #NYCSchoolsTechChat

Wow, @googlearts would be a great way to have a virtual field trip (since I cannot easily do field trips) but for us, instead to a science museum. Or potential for cross curricular projects. #NYCSchoolsTechChat
