#LangChat is dedicated to the discussion of topics associated with issues and trends in world language instruction and learning. Educators, administrators, learners, and aficionados of world languages are encouraged to participate and share their experiences and input on various topics such as new ways to teach vocabulary, using music in the language classroom, and making standards-based grading valid. This chat is also unique in that it brings together language educators worldwide and from different contexts (elementary, secondary, higher education, etc.) and languages.
We're here to take you through #langchat this hour - Colleen here from Vancouver BC - teaching HS Japanese not at #actfl17 but will be in #nola for #actfl18
Hi #langchat, I’m John teaching HS Japanese in South Texas, sitting in front of a fireplace at the Omni because it’s 30 degrees colder here in Nashville than where I’m from 😂
Shoutout to #actfl2017 attendees! Thank you for sharing your excitement and experiences in tweets and links for the #armchairPD people. #actfl2018 dreams! #langchat
A1 @snapjudgment has great human interest stories especially spooked. I rewrote in Super 7 & Sweet 16 heavy comprehensibility emphasizing cliffhangers between lessons #langchat
A1 I love searching resources that were meant for students from the target culture. There are some awesome publications online meant for elementary and middle school #French speaking students in France, Belgium, Canada, etc. #langchat
A1 I have a few staples in my French tchr toolbox, most aimed at young native spkrs - @1jour1actu@monquotidien &family, etc - that are not childish but have simple lang that my sts will understand. #langchat
A1: For films/TV shoes, I like to create slide decks (or find the awesome ones from the likes of @dowd124 & @karacjacobs ) and tell the story with CI before viewing. #langchat
A1 I find resources by paying attention to what my Ss are talking about: the Duck Song on YouTube, TechDecks (I invented a story from a "tech deck fails" YouTube clip), movies they see that weekend and use Super7/sweet16 in rewrite #langchat
A1 I’m not against creating my own level led materials but prefer accessible authentic readings for sure. Using created for younger native speakers works well. #langchat

A1 After seeing this strategy used, I recently tried embedding emoji-like images for new, non-essential vocab into a story for the first time #langchat

yes, don't mistake what may seem off task behavior, it could be a goldmine for what you should discuss in class! I got duck song from a S always saying to me "got any grapes?" #langchat
A1) @Newsela is a good resource in Spanish. I’m also a fan of building thematic vocab to help students approach texts within a unit. Stretch: if you can’t get it today, get it tomorrow. #langchat
A1 also I got a prank text (probably from former student) on my Google voice # that I comprehensified. a great cliffhanger that sounded like mysterious and ended with Q "do you know the muffin man" #langchat
A2 I don't find. one thing I do for listening is use Kahoot where answers are in L1, and I read statement in TL, Ss have to select L1 version of what they hear me say (and cuts down on chatter) #langchat
A2: I love that @edpuzzle allows students to go back and replay what they needed to hear again. Also the project feature allows sts to annotate what they understood #langchat#studentchoice
A2: I use a lot of songs from @rockalingua. YouTube is a great way to search for listening activities, especially #authres like commercials, etc. #langchat
A2 occasionally I change the task: ask Ss to shout out any words they understand from a commercial or film & someone counts with baseball counter clicker. or you can do "how many times do you hear x" task #langchat
A2 I find a few that can be used in different contexts- my Ms SS like news in slow spanish, Spanish https://t.co/VjANNayeyJ. Google in the TL/Target culture can often help the search #langchat
#langchat I teach upper levels I use memes. I find them in Pinterest related to whatever theme or idea we are discussing or reviewing. The pics and humor attract students. Humor and word plays teach culture as well as language
A2: I need to work with @EDpuzzle and really make use of it. I often create (or find) slide shows or simplified transcripts that go along with the proficiency level of the group. #langchat
A2 occasionally I change the task: ask Ss to shout out any words they understand from a commercial or film & someone counts with baseball counter clicker. or you can do "how many times do you hear x" task #langchat
A2: If the #authres is above their CI, I give them a specific task and remind them that the goal is not to understand everything they hear, but to complete the task. #langchat
A2 Shorten the audio/video clip, break down in manageable parts, include times where sts need to listen for answer, provide a variety of tasks for 1 resource- multiple choice, fill in blank, put in order, mark if heard. #langchat

A2 i use a lot of YouTube. Again, I change the task depending on the S level. I also find @Zamb0mbazo resources great for #authres because he gives great exercises to use the songs. #langchat
A3 so important to support the flow of CI! rejoinders, teaching vocab for hi freq classroom vocab (my computer's dead, I'm hungry, I'm kidding), password at door...#langchat
True. But that doesn't make text more comprehensible. Depends on tchr purpose - sts need to recognize words or make meaning, understand and be able to discuss. #langchat
A1 I write my own class story with Latin 1 - students give me ideas and I use the high frequency vocabulary and grammar I need to target. They love that they can be part of the creation process! #langchat
A3 I keep it to 3 simple rules that are hi vis: 1 person talks others listen, listen with the intent to understand, do your best. and I refer to these all the time, can pause and point to them. #langchat
A3 Also having routine phrases that signal what's coming text/what students have to do. I always do a countdown to transition out of partner/group work, some use class-yes phrases #langchat

Scaling up vocabulary based on common word roots helps too. For instance in Spanish, all English “-pose” verbs are “-poner” verbs: imponer, exponer, yuxtaponer. This helps Ss take control of communication. #langchat
A3 one mgmt I got from @Faith_Laux: pre-teach your transitions in TL and PRACTICE when Ss aren't in heat of moment: like: Silently, open your computers; stand up and make a circle; pack up and listen; return to seats #langchat
I agree! It`s great to use #authres when you find compelling AND comprehensible stuff, but that is RARE. Keeping it compelling and comprehensible is priority. #langchat#sla
A3 #CI makes classroom management so much easier. You’re engaging students with input. Tons of verbs and phrases on my walls so I can just point when students don’t get hung up. When the focus isn’t output, things get way easier! #langchat
A4 hm. I don't give homework. but I use Google forms (a GEM) for structured input activities that go with videos, I can use gifs with TL descriptions for sequencing exercises #langchat see https://t.co/pb62ox1c94
Yes, I teach a very simplified version of the windmill episode to my 4th graders every year :) #langchat I have a mini book & props in my shoppe, it is a ton of fun!!

A3- I give students opportunities to shoutout w/ rejoinders that are distributed and passed out each day by S-helper. It gives kids an opportunity to shout out in TL. #langchat
Simplifying/adapting #authres text (or providing simplified & original) makes it more comprehensible thus enabling sts to discuss at any level. I assume that we all strive for as much TL interaction in class as possible. #langchat
a4 classkick is a great tech resource for illustrating sentences from stories or text—and you can see all illustrations in 1 place or click thru Ss illustrations on overhead, great post-story for novel reps #langchat
A4: I don't give homework (no one makes me) & I told my kiddos how language needs to marinate in their brains overnight to make connections so they go home & marinate in #Spanish#langchat

A4: I seldom give HW, usually just reading in upper levels. @FluencyMatters novels and their accompanying teacher’s guides are great sub plans. @MartinaBex has some great CI sub plans on TPT #langchat
A4 But I do do a twitter chat with my students. Exactly like #langchat. Students have a blast with it. The next day at school students are super hyped. #langchat
A4- You CANT 100% ensure Ss will be provided with CI for out of class assignments. However, SeñorWooly is great for comprehensibility and can be compelling depending on student interest. #langchat
A4 I do [well, did] choice boards...so some work involved outside of class, but Ss have the whole unit to finish and can choose what tasks they wish to complete. #langchat
A4 I give a really open-ended choice homework. They fill out a Google Form each week to let me know what they learned. I share another doc with ideas for practice. Whatever they work to understand is comprehensible, I guess. #langchat
You may already have mentioned it - but TELL US AGAIN! Q5: What are your 'everyone should know about this' resources & what do you use them for? #langchat
A4- I limit the work given outside of classroom...my Ss usually just have the work Ss didn't finish in class. Most times it is off-task behavior that causes them not to finish in class. #langchat
I saw something in a math class today that was inspiring: different “challenges” for groups based on where they were and what the whole class needed: flexible, responsive, meaningful. Make me think. #langchat
A5 Google forms on questionnaire setting for comprehension checks/tech version of "Quick quiz". Ss instantly know if mult choice is right or wrong and you can add a comment to a right/wrong open ended question so Ss can see if they got it #langchat
A5- One of my fave tech reading resources that I feel like people don't use as much as they should is @activelylearn ! It's like EdPuzzle for reading! #langchat
A5 EdPuzzle for listening. Readlang browser extension for reading authentic texts (best for upper levels, probably). Word Walls! TPRS! PACE method! MovieTalk! #langchat
You may already have mentioned it - but TELL US AGAIN! Q5: What are your 'everyone should know about this' resources & what do you use them for? #langchat
You can hover over a word and get a definition (sourced from WordReference). Highlight a phrase and get a translation. Then can save & build your own library, create flashcards to review, etc. #langchat
A5 Quizlet Live diagrams and subscription for audio. Kahoot used as listening comp where Ss select L1 verz of TL sentence they hear. Google slides to house everything I write #langchat
A5 Tina Hargaden/CI Liftoff YouTube for ideas and what these things should look like in classroom, Ben Slavic's PLC for the holy grail of what to be doing, Tea with BVP Podcast for pedagogy #langchat
Flipgrid = for Interpersonal and Presentational speaking.
Quizlet Live = for more CI (??s, fill-ins, sentence matching)
Embedded Reading = for comprehensifying #authres#langchat
Anything that @dowd124 creates = CI
@FluencyMatters = for CI

A5 I can't live without https://t.co/x5E2rfZuZh for lesson planning - embed links, docs, everything and will re-calendar automatically for next year #langchat
A5 I use @explainevrythng to creat didgital picture books and videos to create #CI stories. I especially like to create wordless picture books to coincide with #TPRS stories. I feel wordless pic books are #cCI. #langchat
no...I suggest you listen to Tea with BVP episode on the goal of TCI instruction...L2 learners rarely reach native like fluency so comprehensibility via high frequency vocab is more bang for your buck. #langchat
I’m reminded that #langchat peeps are doing amazing work: challenging students, finding and creating resources, supporting colleagues and members of their PLN. #langchat
A5 don't forget @textivate for all types of CI & literacy tasks (accompanied by audio too!). It's a paid service but totally worth it, esp. w/beginners. #langchat
Yes! It is important to teach your students how to read around unknown words, use context clues, & cognates. If all those fail, make an inference, and it's okay if you are wrong! #langchat#growthmindset
I don't think it is an either/or situation- you definitely want to highlight high frequency words but many "traditional" words never appear with native speakers bc they use other words #langchat
grateful for all our resources and to be a resource, and to hear someone say "But that's a great and useful idea!" when I'm doubting my methods! #langchat
