Tracey from KS-I teach K-5 at Therapeutic Learning Program. Rock...Chalk....Jay Hawk....KU! I would love to see Loyola vs. KU. Two guys from Loyola are from Overland Park, KS. #makeitreal
Yes! Or post apocolypse, which is the next story we're diving into! They have to have a tribe and make their own chant! Love this chat for lesson ideas! We haven't even answered a question yet! #MakeItReal
A1: Ss asked me if we could take a class period and sit in a circle, start a story, set a timer, pass right or left when timer goes off, continue story until timer goes off, pass, etc. Write all hour? That won't work...but it did. :) #MakeItReal
A1: I think it must have been when I decided to go back to school and get my masters. We had 2 in college and one still in H.S. at the time. #MakeItReal
A1) I had to get creative in scheduling “specials” so that teachers could have an aligned prep. It was tricky but it worked and everyone loved it! #MakeItReal
A1: Did a pop-up book w/ my 6th graders a few years ago on plate tectonics. I'm not the most artsy guy, but Ss ended up making it work and it becoming one of my favorite things to look forward to each year. #makeitreal
#MakeItReal A1 “Cultural Collaborations.” Being able to make time zones work and getting kids to participate. Our HS CE class participated in a debate over current issues with a class from Monterrey, Mexico. Ended up being one of the best experiences!
#makeitreal last year a student of mine wanted to do a science fair project using a basketball game app... I was so skeptical but she did a great job & got a runner up prize for calculating the best angle to make a basket!
A1: I had Ss measure the wingspan and exoskeleton of insects on a paper. I didn't know how they would respond. I had insect decorations all over my classroom and they asked if they could also measure those insects and I told them to go for it! #makeitreal
A2: Well, I was just going to say that I make a mythology bracket to see which characters survive and outlast others in the myths, but now I'm going to incorporate the pregame Rock Chalk chant idea @MathDenisNJ and I just came up with. Going tribal. #MakeItReal
#MakeItReal@1988project does the March Madness of Presidents debate. Features all the Presidents since the end of Civil War. Ss debate each other, winners move on. Great activity!
Last year I did a March madness bracket with students competing in math, language arts, math, & PE tasks... the final rounds combined all 4 subjects in a crazy obstacle course! #makeitreal it was fun!
A2: My kiddos aren't really into March Madness but I have always planned on using a tournament of books. I am huge into sports, so we talk a lot about what is going on and how KU is doing. We had discussed our mascot and plan to study the history of the Jayhawk. #makeitreal
With March having #PiDay as well, I do a bracket and set up a circle drawing contest for kids. We eliminate until there's a schoolwide winner! #MakeItReal
A2b: My school is doing a March Madness Academic Vocabulary competition. My AA (Adviser/Advisee) class won today to advance to second round. We're using @quizlet Live. #MakeItReal
A3: It's such a busy, tiring time of year. But when I feel that way, I get out and spend as much time with Kids as possible. They keep me going! #MakeItReal#kidsdeserveit
A3: Competition gets tough at this time of year, so I always remember the players (Ss). They're the WHY, so I keep working hard to secure a spot in the championship for them. #MakeItReal
Our AP Human Geo teacher put together a 'tourney' where Ss draft countries. Use continents for brackets. Battle based on GDP, literacy rates, infant mortality, etc... Built his own trophy from water jug, plastic bowl & duct tape. #MakeItReal
A3) my staff and students motivate me to bring it everyday! I love them and I know at least one of them need me to #BeTheOne so I bring it. No matter what! #MakeItReal
A3: The challenge of competition itself. Like having to think a little bit more, collaborate a little bit more, communicate a little bit more, and being forced to get out of my comfort zone. Like seeing the team come together to overcome the challenge. #MakeItReal
#MakeItReal A3 Our Students! What can I do to make a better learning experience for them? The opportunity to connect with the world and make learning relevant, they will remember! Here are some of our speakers.
A3: My students keep me going! They need someone who won't give up on them. Everyone is tired now and it is a great time to show your students an example of grit and resilience. #makeitreal
A3: The competition has nothing on what we do. You have to know your WHY. I'm motivated to be better every day for the Kids. We can and will be better because the World can be better #MakeitReal
