A1: A gifted student can be many different definitions. Gifted can be academic, artistic, athletic....
Hi, Char! Great to see you!
Missed the Q-can someone retweet?
Ss who are able and willing to take their work to a higher level than others, showing indy style while proving learning
welcome, Ken! Glad to have you with tonight!
A1: A gifted student is a student who excels in one or more areas well beyond his/her peers.
Thanks Jeremy! I'm just excited to chat gifted all the time!
We were! Did John give you the invite to come over to my house last night?
A1) Gifted is a label given to a learner who exhibits a higher interest in the learning process https://t.co/aarRb7Rd4K
Q1 What is your definition of a gifted student?
Matt from Worthington Kilbourne, dropping in a tad late, but can't get enough HS hoops - love the topic tonight!
A1: Gifted students learn differently. They have different needs.Often these needs are not met because they will pass the test.
a1: gifted Ss are students who are stronger in certain subjects because of previous knowledge. They need more challenges.
Mark in your calendar - July 13 at Clark Hall Columbus - one of the biggest EdCamps in the country
A1: An exceptional student with prior knowledge and the potential to excel beyond a traditional curriculum
Wow! We have the experts in the house tonight! Thanks for being here, Colleen!
A1: A student who thinks differently, sees things in unique, insightful ways, understands concepts/skills quickly.
I am Suzanne Palmer. Gifted coordinator with Worthington Schools and first vice-president of OAGC.
A1a gifted student is a special education student with talents, intellectual or artistic, that need 2b challenged in order to grow
Hi, Sonja! is talking gifted ed right now too!
Thanks for being here from Down Under
A1: Ss able to answer and apply in deeper context. Can be a quicker processor. Processes many items concurrently
Neil Armstrong built a wind tunnel in his basement and learned to fly at 15. in action
A1 Gifted Ss understand things differently than the rest of the population.
A1:Hard time w/ this question-all ss are "gifted" in own way. Here, gifted is high IQ? High level thinker, needs diff instruct.
A1: Students who thinks at a higher level than others and understands using their previous knowledge.
I almost missed it when going back, thought I made it up for a minute! Here you go! :) https://t.co/NMlEnXG9Kn
Q1 What is your definition of a gifted student?
A-1 gifted in a variety of ways, maybe with special talents or passions that are not evident all the time
A1: Above average ability, creative, and able to work independently with coaching on tasks.
Welcome Suzanne. Good to see you in person and in the twitterverse in one week.
A1: If the interest is higher does that mean intelligence is higher? Wondering if they go hand-in-hand? https://t.co/bQm9G2Khv7
A1) Gifted is a label given to a learner who exhibits a higher interest in the learning process https://t.co/aarRb7Rd4K
Q1 What is your definition of a gifted student?
A1: We focus too much on high achieving in academics as gifted. I think that is the wrong perspective.
A1 A gifted student is more mature than grade level and can find lower level practice meaningless.
A1: A GT student may or may not be one who is achieving at the highest levels but may have the potential ability beyond age mates
A1 Not sure I get the gifted moniker.
If you fit a criteria, then you're gifted?
Like to think we're all gifted in something.
Can you talk more about your thinking I'm with you!
A1: gifted students push buttons that need to be pushed, challenge the status quo
A gifted student is a student showing a high level of intelligence or talent in a subject or specific area
Agreed, traditionally "gifted" does not necessarily equate to good grades. Einstein flunked out https://t.co/qjRyAkAf0s
A1: We focus too much on high achieving in academics as gifted. I think that is the wrong perspective.
many of the definitions I'm seeing could be applied to any student. Would change in instruction help all kids?
Agreed! Gifted students are underserved! https://t.co/VAV6zQl74x
A1: Gifted students learn differently. They have different needs.Often these needs are not met because they will pass the test.
Q2 What do you think gifted students in your building/district complain about the most?
I'm Michael, elem principal from SW Missouri... Looking forward to some great gifted discussion!
I am participating in my 1st EdCamp this weekend in NJ!
I find these same Ss are so smart, but are in fact very "needy" as they haven't learned self reliance & coping skills
Interest is higher because interest has been serviced. Higher order thinking follows. https://t.co/sVCDEHCXqF
Met this young man last week at . He is a true for kids. Thanks for being here! https://t.co/pJvpAY2nfi
A1: An exceptional student with prior knowledge and the potential to excel beyond a traditional curriculum
I'll keep you in mind for the next meet up! Would love to catch up!
For my first one, it was great! Definitely more in the future!
Congrats! CBus is huge! Website will be up soon.
. Good point. Gifted can be about perception of things. We typically see it as academic gifted though.
A2: boredom, already knowing things they are "taught", powerless https://t.co/bmk9R8968v
Q2 What do you think gifted students in your building/district complain about the most?
Yes! They challenge self, each other, and their Ts on a daily basis, always learning in some way.
It seems that our ed. sys. puts test scores/IQ as the measuring stick for gifted, but there are gifted autistic Ss.
Hey , if I remember right, you are a fellow Student Prince right?
Maybe join tonight? We're talking gifted!
thanks for being here! Is in the house and I didn't catch it? Amazing leader!
Having to do work that is meaningless or they already know the answers.
Glad you are here, Suzanne! Here's another expert everyone on should follow tonight!
Many gifted specialists say that what is good for gifted is good for all.
YES! We must find other ways to identify https://t.co/OnB0tkcV5J
It seems that our ed. sys. puts test scores/IQ as the measuring stick for gifted, but there are gifted autistic Ss.
but sometimes immature in other areas, I had a mature gifted learner that had very immature behavior
They don't have the opportunity to work with like minded peers.
A2: GT master skills/concepts with far fewer repetitions than average Ss, requiring them to complete "all problems" is frustrating
Should have stopped - legends like & were sharing educational insight
great response. I agree whole-heartedly. Appreciate the perspective.
A2-That everyone expects them to be perfect at everything, they're not challenged academically&people just don't understand them
I think we need to enrich the curriculum for all students.
A2 I wish they would complain. Our gifted kids are less driven than those from years past. They've become reticent
A1: "a gt student's mind works differently than a typical student; they need special Ts."
A2: Lack of challenges - or autonomy to create beyond the assignment guidelines
A1) Hi everyone Spiri from PA G&T sorry I'm late! To me gifted means curious, inquisitive, yearning to explore
A2- They are bored. The struggle to challenge them while making sure the other students achieve basic understanding is an issue.
If we differentiate rigor, is there a need for gifted?
Hey, Tara! Glad you are here!
Gifted IEP students, Gifted Tech Prep Ss. Why is scoring high on an IQ test more imp. than being able to troubleshoot a network.
A2 Gifted or not, students don't feel what they learn is relevant, period! Students lack engagement on any level
A2: In my former district, I had Ss taking 6 AP classes at one time! Too much work & I agree with them!
A2: very good question. It could be that at time it is difficult to live up to other's expectations for them
A2 That they can't "test out" of stuff they know. My kiddo hates she can't learn coding at school, no time for passion learning.
A2: Reviewing that which they already know, knowledge/comprehension level work.
a2: complain that they aren't focused on/challenged enough. Edu is driven to meet in the middle. All Ss need challenged.
Understanding is the biggest one for me. Ts and other Ss struggle to understand.
A2: I've visited a GT classroom (thanks !), Ss talked about not being challenged, some said Ts doubted their abilities!
Thank you sir! Great to meet fellow educators as yourself doing great things for kids!
A2) They're not complaining, but are fearful of taking risks & of failure, difficulty w/ growth mindset
A2: boredom, lack of challenge. Sometimes become disruptive due to lack of challenge
A2. The ability to take the classes that they are interested in, but are limited by the 7 period day.
Glad you are here! is moderating tonight's
My g/t Ss need time & space w/each other. Social-emotional piece is important, too.
A2: GT Ss can often see connections in their learning beyond what the class or assignment boundaries will let them make.
Gifted students may not experience productive struggle. They need 2 feel the struggle associated w/deepening their knowledge
A2: lack of enrichment activities & lessons. Also, a lack of respect from administration
Welcome, Joy! Glad you could join us!
students complain about process of getting labeled and about not being challenged enough even with many attempts. S need more
A2: Gifted students generally complain about the same things other students do, for more interactive and engaging lessons
Unfortunately sometimes gifted means more work.
I'm a Technology Specialist in Sherman ISD
A2: Not enough rigor. I teach science and I've got a solution. Give them real life problems to solve and let them struggle.
A2. They struggle as the SPECTRA class is an elective.
A2) Ss-Faster pace doesn't meet my needs. I'm not grouped with similar thinkers. More work doesn't support me and my needs.
Hey girl! Glad you're on here!
A2: complaining they are bored, or don't understand why they have to learn content that is not relatable to interests/self
What a difference if we'd move to a services-based model vs formal GT designation https://t.co/3iiCpPOLGX
Q2 What do you think gifted students in your building/district complain about the most?
Nice response. We see that at our place
I have had Ss ask that as well. I need to offer it more often.
Glad you are here, Kaitlin! is moderating tonight's
Exactly! My kiddo feels isolated in her reg. classroom. Even in 5th gr, liking school isn't cool.
Chris from Mass. here nice to join in tonight!
I agree. The desire to get high grades doesn't help with risk encouragement.
Yes, many gifted students go to college & when really challenged, they fail. Need to struggle earlier https://t.co/Dhp4Dnpphq
Gifted students may not experience productive struggle. They need 2 feel the struggle associated w/deepening their knowledge
But; is there a way to help these Ss learn coding so they can teach others. Search out a new situation!
Yes! I've had Ss tell me, "Why can't others let me be human and make mistakes, too?"
a2: many times gifted Ss are forced to be something they're not...leaders. Some don't like that connection.
Great to see Jerry in the house tonight! He ran a great TedX event last weekend!
Love the term "passion learning" - may use that in a blog post
I am really pumped you are the leader of ! Will you be able to join us at in April?
A2. They thrive on rigor. So this is what they want more of throughout their day.
You raise good points. Perhaps I'm thinking of old-school gifted/talented programs.
Is it a broad moniker?
A2: We educate to the middle or the most "needy" and leave them to their own devices. They are truly the forgotten ones at times.
Hey, - we need to get Jerry on our planning committee for the summer!
Def witnessed this, afraid to take risks in non gifted areas, feel disappointed/like a failure
A2) Available programs do not match the student's ability https://t.co/3iiCpPOLGX
Q2 What do you think gifted students in your building/district complain about the most?
She's learning it on Khan on the side, but on top of boring math ws and boring Eng ws, sometimes we run out of time.
They hate being used to teach the slower learner. I call that "brain pimping"!
A2: Our elem Ss want to discover more and spend less time practicing skills
Hmm. So is it programs or culture?
A2. The traditional instructional model is the issue. TAG needs more stimulation and application to reality. All Ss do.
never had that one happen...knock on wood. But I would imagine it's part of the thought processes
It can be. Depends on service model. I teach ELA to my Ss--I am their lang. arts teacher.
He's on it! We are bringing the heat on July 13 at Columbus
am in Carol ELA Consultant from Long Island here.
Going to cut out early. Have a great night, thank you for chat--great topic https://t.co/wUHnvr2kAu
Glad you are here! is moderating tonight's
Q3 How do you currently discuss gifted identification to parents and students?
A2: We provide upper acad. courses (AP/Advanced), but what do we do for those who are tactile gifted, artistically gifted, etc.?
And I'm always adding history to my ELA. : )
Don't worry, Jerry - we will take care of you!
Wow, that's a new spin on it.
Awesome! Glad you made it, Carol!
What I do love is the way our Spectra teacher works to meet their social, emotional, and academic needs.
But why aren't the teachers of these students helping them to achieve their best? The middle doesn't need our help!
Thanks for being here, Allyson! Always glad when you stop by
hoping to make it there! DM me more info or send me the registration link!
I try to foster growth mindset as much as I can. It helps them a great deal.
All Ss could benefit from "gifted lessons" - but it's the pace, the social emotional needs, & independence that gifted kids need.
A3) the talk stems from vast observation - not just from data but their learning behavior https://t.co/HE1nvWAii4
Q3 How do you currently discuss gifted identification to parents and students?
thanks for dropping in, Carol!
Hello! And I agree with you .
I agree 100%. Maybe we should label teachers instead. "Unwilling to adapt" "willing to adapt"
A2: S need more relevant and interesting material. They can sometimes struggle with relationships.
Jennifer from SWFlorida here!
I love how works the room like a friendly doorman! : )
Me too! Seems it's always a science/ELA or social studies/ELA thing. And art and music.
glad you are here, Jennifer! You are going to love
agreed. Growth mindset and grit
Concierge at your service!
YESSSSSSS!!!!!!! So many things I learned in apply to so many learners. https://t.co/X53q1tFwvU
many of the definitions I'm seeing could be applied to any student. Would change in instruction help all kids?
Good Stuff here. https://t.co/8O9HAJLxHT
A3) the talk stems from vast observation - not just from data but their learning behavior https://t.co/HE1nvWAii4
Q3 How do you currently discuss gifted identification to parents and students?
A3: As a T, I try to spot "creative thinkers" in my electives & encourage them to take one of my AP classes.
A3) Just revised criteria, now primarily focus on Renzuli model, motivation/desire & creativity is very important to include
Harvard of Ohio talk here in
A3: With Ss: We talk about learning needs. Use medical analogy: we have diff. health needs, we have diff. learning needs.
welcome to , Jennifer! A bit warmer in your state I pressume?
A3: Through the teacher's lens; it's important that the Ss and parents feel a part of the learning
A2: gt Ss complain when they're Ts don't get them. They complain about more HW because some Ts think they can handle it.
A3: Unfortunately, the main discussions only happen in elem. due to funding. At HS, we send letters home and suggest CCP+, Adv.
Perfectionism and idealism lead to excessive self-criticism in gifted students https://t.co/Z1FhEOa6w3
All Ss could benefit from "gifted lessons" - but it's the pace, the social emotional needs, & independence that gifted kids need.
A3: seems like a whole lot of districts rely on test results which are quite deceptive.
I like that you included creativity. https://t.co/jxpDVFVnau
A3) Just revised criteria, now primarily focus on Renzuli model, motivation/desire & creativity is very important to include
There are some social and emotional needs unique to gifted kiddos. Gifted does not equal academic talent.
A3: jumping in! Encourage them to push themselves in honors and AP classes. Just have conversations about it and build them up!
Before retiring from public ed was in charge of gifted. We called it S.A.I.L. Ss accelerating in learn.more inclusive.
A3: with answers provided for A1 I worry that gifted Ss get stifled in their learning and don't maintain
Transitioning now reading.
Thanks for letting me share in this Buckeye chat. Peace to my PLN
I have noticed some don't include the parents in the process too. parents feel lost & confused. It needs to change
Creativity is key to unlocking imagination, curiosity, wonder
And the many other legends! Good times. Should be an annual.
Exactly! This is not to say that regular ed kiddos don't have these probs, but it's exacerbated for gifted.
A3. It is not promoted as widely as it should be. Our Spectra teacher does a great job of identifying gifted Ss.
Peace out Bri! We love ya!
project based flipped instruction challenges all students: gifted to special needs
A3-with parents we should focus more on their unique social emotional tendencies. ❤️the Teacher handbk from OAGC on chara +/-
I believe gifted education and classes should magnify the discovery experience - that message should be conveyed
A3. I should include this in my Curriculum Night presentations and new parent nights.
Thanks for being here, Brian! You are what makes awesome!
We took into acct T observations, rdg scores/levels/OLSAT testing in 2nd gr.
A3: if I believe a S can handle the challenge, I contact the Ps to share these thoughts and have them join in conversations.
a3: discuss options. Discuss what it involves to be gifted. Parents may like it, but is it best for the student.
Focus is too often on IQ & Standardized Tests, however true "high intelligence" comes in many forms must include
But this is so sad for an ELA teacher of upper elem Ss to hear! Keep up the energy for new learning!
Not expecting teachers to just get it. Expecting teachers to change when options are given to them.
A1:Ss who need to be challenged.Ss know that they are differ & may possibly shy away from their gift since others aren't like them
A-3 do other districts identify at early grade? Meaning some "old for their grade" are ID'd ? Not HS issue, just asking
love ! is amazing too! Have you seen ghostmode?
We had our kiddo tested, when deciding if she should skip a grade coming from Montessori to Pub. Ed.
Options that will benefit the learning of all students not just a certain group. Enrichment as norm!
Some ss haven't had to cope with a challenge in younger grades.GT service is a shock at Gr 3 or 4. https://t.co/v63g5tUKYZ
I find these same Ss are so smart, but are in fact very "needy" as they haven't learned self reliance & coping skills
Would be great if you could make Columbus on July 13 Bri! You can crash at Neil's
A3: I notice our answers and most of us mention AP, Honors courses, CCP+, but what about the "gifted" mechanic? Need to expand.
no lies...I bombed a test in elementary to AVOID gifted ed! Sometimes it isn't fun/better to be labeled!
Two young Ts trying to make it interesting, but NGA fears abound. Speaking tonight more as P than T.
What an awesome perspective! The "LABEL" is sometimes worse than not being challenged.
What do we do when those identified early aren't able to handle the workload at the higher levels?
Brian! Seriously! We have the space! Come on over to Ohio!
Our school only offers programs at elem for gifted. Then it's "advanced courses."
The uneven nature of the gifted students requires extra care in social and emotional training https://t.co/RU3nWTaqNc
A1:Ss who need to be challenged.Ss know that they are differ & may possibly shy away from their gift since others aren't like them
Kids see themselves as a target for just "more work" - symptom of a deeper problem in GT ed https://t.co/AdTE8jAFGO
no lies...I bombed a test in elementary to AVOID gifted ed! Sometimes it isn't fun/better to be labeled!
valid argument! How do we address this? The addresses some of these other areas. Career centers?
I don't think it's always willingness.Univs don't prep Ts to teach GT. We can't expect Ts to know how. https://t.co/xVQPNgAXIq
I agree 100%. Maybe we should label teachers instead. "Unwilling to adapt" "willing to adapt"
***Remember the rule of - follow five others on to increase your PLN!
Gifted does not equal academic success. It equals dif. social/emotional needs & ways of learning.
I hear this from parents too they want kids to have different work not more.
There are so many Ss who are gifted in many ways, musicians, mechanics, electricians, how do we support them https://t.co/DtWXQpSwDB
A3: I notice our answers and most of us mention AP, Honors courses, CCP+, but what about the "gifted" mechanic? Need to expand.
Always torn on this topic, because if we differentiate is their a need for SPE accommodations? https://t.co/FM5wwMzAzf
If we differentiate rigor, is there a need for gifted?
A3: Sometimes difficult to convince parents that the label is just that. Working to challenge Ss in regular classroom
Same here. I think we should try to develop that to address those "non-academic" (bad word choice) gifted students.
This is what we work to develop solutions for. https://t.co/gJCsbqaB9C
A3: I notice our answers and most of us mention AP, Honors courses, CCP+, but what about the "gifted" mechanic? Need to expand.
Q4 How does your building/district support your teachers of gifted students?
Exactly! So frustrating for my kiddo.
I have seen this prob, Ss identified in K but then don't progress accordingly, it's tricky, Ps didn't always understand
A3: More genius hour, makerspaces, art enrichment, job shadowing
Change the "workload" to accommodate Ss, make age appropriate
My kids' pull-out GT stopped at grade 6. Then they had advanced courses as well. I'm ok with that. https://t.co/39kxhHqNL7
Our school only offers programs at elem for gifted. Then it's "advanced courses."
This one is OH law. Also have seen test scores reveal GT a T didn't see due to other issues. https://t.co/Yjqwdj8EVp
A3: seems like a whole lot of districts rely on test results which are quite deceptive.
great question! They learned the game of school quickly and can't necessarily problem solve
Sad you were put in that position
We need to teach skills, not just content to be able to accurately identify gifted Ss.
Sometimes I see my most gifted Ss as the most needy; they don't have Independent skills, & no grit!
A4: gifted students go to another school. No who school adaptations , just teacher adaptations for gifted and talented
Good point. It's about the learning
Lurking is learning - I'm definitely learning from some great experts myself!
that makes me want to put a fireplace on my "must haves" list for house hunting!
Teaching grit and the gift of mistakes is priceless to gifted kids.
I definitely get that - more does not equal rigor or better yet creativity https://t.co/F0soOpM3au
I hear this from parents too they want kids to have different work not more.
25 years ago undergrad consisted of a single lecture on g/t. I had prof. who saw & fostered my interest in g/t.
A4. Our gifted T collaborates weekly w/ other middle level teaches via GHOs.
Interesting Q - wonder if the problem might be the expectation that gifted = more work rather than different work.
A4: I don't like the message sending them to another school sends. Tells Ss they only need to think at a high level at that school
A4) we have modified programs and people on staff to help us with the modifying
Why do we think gifted means "more work"? It should be more thinking, more problem solving, exploring, not busy work
The goal should be to challenge all Ss, but the approach may need to be tweaked. https://t.co/RhNwfHvZF1
A3: Sometimes difficult to convince parents that the label is just that. Working to challenge Ss in regular classroom
Issues with identification and the education of this type of learner
A4 At HS level, nothing. At elem, pull out program that serves only superior cognitive.
for sure! Many Ts label GT kids "weird" which is unfair & hurtful. They are different, they need different supports.
BAM!!! https://t.co/HmDxcN1yj8
Why do we think gifted means "more work"? It should be more thinking, more problem solving, exploring, not busy work
Tweeting device is dying. Off to a charger. Great discussions. Thanks.
a4: my school doesn't have a gifted program, but I'd say more prep time, but teachers and admin should be working for all Ss.
Personalizing the learning truly helps the gifted learner.
I think we are all teachers of gifted students...my administration encourages teaching like a pirate to reach all of them!
I love that. More thinking not more work. I'm stealing that.
well..that'll teach you :)
Ps have a hard time understanding what truly gifted means, prob needs to be made more clear
Depends- ill equipped for personal reasons or b/c not served when ID?Can't expect to achieve w/o support. https://t.co/Sp05i7NJHR
What do we do when those identified early aren't able to handle the workload at the higher levels?
not all gifted kids are academic learners. Many have learning disabilities they have to deal with.
Hi - Sorry I'm late - Don - MS Principal Long Island
A3: Collaborate with the teacher to identify similarities and differences of the Ss behavior and work ethic at home and school
My teachers attend gifted cluster training and then have follow up each year for gr. 2-8
great point! It's just good teaching them, isn't it? All Ss deserved to be pushed to the highest level of learning!
I love how you added "Talented." I think that gets lost sometimes.
No worries - glad you are here! is moderating tonight's
Not just Ts, this idea filters down to Ss. My kiddo had classmates say she should get 100% if she's so 'gifted'
Lots of districts do, too. High OAA doesn't always equal gifted.
Hello! Thanks for hopping in!
A4: I get lots of support thru resources, sharing of info & ideas, encouragement to keep learning.
gahanna used to call it GATE (gifted and talented education). I am not sure if that is still the case!
A4: Prepare Ts through meaningful PD - build teacher confidence and cognitive ability to help Ss explore and grow
A4: GISs play an invaluable role in providing timely PD for teachers designed aground the unique needs of the Ss
A4- yearly pd on a host of topics. Id, chara, ways to diffy, etc...
Fun to be connected with my twitter friends.
Yes! Gs need depth and complexity, advanced content, & opportunities to pursue topics that interest them https://t.co/YcrAfLSSVj
Personalizing the learning truly helps the gifted learner.
I think we have hit the nail on the head. Dive into the critical thinking, the resolve, the grit.
A4: I support my fellow Ts through formal & informal PD, sharing ideas, resources, strategies, tools, insights. Takes a team.
A4: I'm not sure. I know our Honors and AP math teachers have a PLC to work on vertical alignment. And we have a gifted IS...
A4) District focuses on , Ss choice Ss help me build units they're interested in, Genius Hour, STEAM, MinecraftEdu
That's my kiddo sometimes. And timed tests don't help.
Thanks. I apologize for dropping in right in the middle, but I like this topic and wanted to catch what I can
thanks for dropping by, Carol! Keep up the amazing work with your peeps!
accelerated learning that inspires...
A4: definitely need to expand on this at high school as mentioned by class placement used to attempt fix
Yeah. It's easier to just ID the kids who have high test scores.
Hahaha! Don't steal! I will gladly share 😊
And make sure Ts have time to "practice" PD. One time PD, just like a quick lecture, never sticks.
We used to also. I cringe calling gifted instruction "a name" as we leave some Ss out & pull some Ss in!
A4: our district has gifted coordinators that collaborate and plan with gen Ed Ts
A4: I think it's important for administrators to encourage as many teachers as possible to pursue GIS certification as well
Makes me want my kiddo to go where you are!
informal PD is so important to learning your Ss and continuous professional growth
Love this! https://t.co/Fkk6pwTVry
We used to also. I cringe calling gifted instruction "a name" as we leave some Ss out & pull some Ss in!
and thanks for always supporting the voice of NYS and beyond.
Absolutely! They don't need busy work or a worksheet, they need to problem solve & create
I'm so far behind in this chat, I feel like the Cleveland Browns. ?
A4: our district also does PDs, one was about being smart vs gifted, very powerful, helped clarify
A4. Showing the gifted students that units of study are wide-open. Cow eye dissection unit. https://t.co/FjOV7lHaFd
Is a pull-out program even necessary? Shouldn't we support gen Ed Ts to reach every S & challenge every S whether ahead or behind?
I think it's better viewed as a service, rather than a program.
Great point Matt. We all need to become more diverse in this area
but it leaves so many out
One time PD is old school and does not hold a lot of weight unless there is follow-up and conversation.
A4 Offer a philosophy elective. It's a wonderful place for gifted students to learn alongside regular level. Nurtures creativity.
Q5 How does the social/emotional piece in fit in the gifted education framework in your building/district?
if you can't make fun of yourself, who can you make fun of??
YES! My hubby, gifted, often refused to do the ws. He was forced in lower classes as Ss, making it worse.
yes -- pullout programs are too often opportunities for the "gifted" kids to be exposed to amazingness - ALL kids need
YES!!!! Support gen ed-pull out makes me crazy https://t.co/Ulit5Cty03
Is a pull-out program even necessary? Shouldn't we support gen Ed Ts to reach every S & challenge every S whether ahead or behind?
Definitely - you have to support that new knowledge or skill and help Ts work through learning curves https://t.co/OpLN2W765H
And make sure Ts have time to "practice" PD. One time PD, just like a quick lecture, never sticks.
Amen! I try to go more than a week without a "worksheet" Authentic reading, writing, blogging & talking
Lucky enough to work in a district with self-contained gifted classes, so Ts in my building are familiar with gifted Ss.
I agree with you. Test scores do not equal gifted.
HUGE! Part of the problem w/the label. Too many are afraid to take risks & make mistakes. Why? Ps? Ts? Ss? https://t.co/ykiHOYEWG1
Teaching grit and the gift of mistakes is priceless to gifted kids.
a3:it's a hot topic in my district right now. models are being changed, numbers raised, teachers w/out certs teaching all GT Ss :(
think GRADES have a lot to do with it
I gain so much from it--sometimes all it takes is a web site or book title for resource to learn more.
A5 Honestly, I don't think my kiddo's emotional needs are met, despite our requests to our gifted T.
A5: I think you have to make programs engaging and relevant so Ss feel successful which builds self-worth, encouragement, etc.
Awesome, but totally gross! Every T has their expertise, mine is def not anything with dissecting previous living things
A4: a PBL PD will do wonders to attract teachers and encourage them to challenge all of their students.
Yes, but Its also about support for Ss to find that peer who "gets them"-often found in GT class https://t.co/OzqUhKmJHn
Is a pull-out program even necessary? Shouldn't we support gen Ed Ts to reach every S & challenge every S whether ahead or behind?
A5- I have seen that our most gifted are usually the most fragile emotionally and most awkward socially. What can we do to help?
I understand. I observed this unit in action. It was incredible https://t.co/DyE3rvolSA
Awesome, but totally gross! Every T has their expertise, mine is def not anything with dissecting previous living things
Yeah. Supporting their emotional needs is why pull out might be important.
can't you group within a classroom? You find your "like-peers".No one pointed them out to me in college!
A5a) Ss are fearful of being wrong, fearful of taking risks, of not knowing something, very competitive, high anxiety
This is NOT understood by many!! My son is GT and has ADHD. Teachers were extra hard on him. https://t.co/YX3tuWIw4A
not all gifted kids are academic learners. Many have learning disabilities they have to deal with.
A5: SEL is key. Gifted Ss can have challenges in this area as well. We offer a social skills class for all Ss.
A5: Social-emotional: thru discussions, me being aware of my Ss & their needs so I can address the issue of the moment.
Columbus on July 13 at Clark Hall - will be sessions on gifted students & differentiation for gifted
Our advisory program fosters connections and a sense of belonging for all Ss.
Do you ask them What their emotional needs are? If not how will you possibly meet their needs Think smarter not harder
I feel self contained works very well w/ a GT certified T. Surrounded by true peers=more comfortable&confident
a5: by placing gifted Ss out front we draw attention to them, both negatively and positively. Ask what needs they want met.
I have a feeling many gifted Ps would agree, sometimes they may have higher social and emotional needs https://t.co/rsu5bkRelB
A5 Honestly, I don't think my kiddo's emotional needs are met, despite our requests to our gifted T.
A5) We're learning not to put them in a box. Sitting in their seat isn't necessary for them to pay attention and do their work.
Letting them hang out with other passionate Ss in a pull out or club might help.
A5: needs to be included. Lot of stress seen at this level as others stemming from environmental favors to wanting to create pride
A5 Gifted Ss need peers. They need someone that "gets" them.
A5: Used to use 's Gifted Kids' Survival Guide as basis for social-emotional pieces. Want to get back to this.
A5 School counselors help us and are willing to do groups, lunch bunches with gt students to meet their social emotional needs.
A-5 That should not be a fit for gifted only, but rather a fit for all students. Probably more important than anything else.
A4- Teach Ts how to ask philosophical questions in all subjects. Extremely difficult skill but essential for reaching gifted kids.
We joke in our house about this but we shouldn't, it is hurtful. gifted doesn't mean all knowing&all talented.
A5: Student Expos that have a variety of projects, demonstrations, art pieces, performances would highlight ALL Gifted/Tal. Ss.
Need to find a way to encourage "failing forward" & minimize importance of grades.
Completely agree. Gifted Ss should be able to personalize their school day and learning
Keep your questions coming! I think they need to be explicitly taught, modeled and practiced
A5: supporting clubs such as provides relationship building opportunities and allows for GT Ss to have social outlets
A5: I believe this is why differentiation in honors, AP, gifted courses is so important - Ss must feel part of a learning comm.
Depends. S with IQ=140 may be only one in class or only one in grade. Would we do that with S with IQs=60? https://t.co/TRTDBrxdh6
can't you group within a classroom? You find your "like-peers".No one pointed them out to me in college!
I listened to and speak about her Gifted Advisory program.
My building supports them by focusing on community building, specifically in the classroom. We do this thru responsive classroom
Yeah-and the T didn't know how to handle it.
Every teacher should consider themself a gifted teacher. It's not a class, it's a child.
Also Ts who recognize moment to set the lesson aside to foster connection & support the social-emotional.
Have to think beyond the box. Not allow bells, beans, balls, burritos, brooms, buses dictate the sch. day. https://t.co/0bQ5kKzEaR
Completely agree. Gifted Ss should be able to personalize their school day and learning
that is so important 4 all Ss 2 have opps with engaging real world projects that ask them to discover and explore
A5 I have lunch each week with my girls one day & the boys one day. So much gained in trust t& learned about Ss Worth it!Love it
Agree -- these rigorous challenges are great opportunities and chance for gifted kids to shine
They need extra care w/ difficulty relating to peers, excessive self-criticism, perfectionism, and avoidance of risk-taking.
Good observation! My kiddo often feels at sea w/age peers.
Especially when the clubs are open to any interested Ss.
Peers who "get" them provide them with a level of comfort and acceptance https://t.co/RIoiWHq3n9
A5 Gifted Ss need peers. They need someone that "gets" them.
A5 - having a tremendous Student Support Team who beats the soc/emotional drum and challenges Ts to shift thinking to meet the S.
College larger than class. K-12 only place we force Ss to be w/same age rather than same ability/interest. https://t.co/TRTDBrxdh6
can't you group within a classroom? You find your "like-peers".No one pointed them out to me in college!
where do you pull out the 1 kid in a grade? To their own class?1 on 1. Make them more awkward socially?
If we are differentiating based on skills and personalizing based on interests, we should be able to keep kids in the classrooms.
Q6 Please share some specific examples of supporting gifted students in your building/district.
well --- not sure abt IQ #'s but we include MOST kids
Last Q posted! Share time!
Loved seeing my GT Ss interact w/classmates that need most help, they accept the responsibility in helping others learn
20-Time/ projects help with this.
I agree. I'm finishing up with right now
A6 Met w/P and 11th grade ELA SS, to explain it was okay not to get 100% on every writing assignment.
A6- independent study art, foreign language and music classes; AP and Honors classes, CCP classes.
What years do we have covered? Class of '07 here!
huge challenge! It usually doesn't :( Unless awesomeTs add it in. https://t.co/waEFSN9TSG
Q5 How does the social/emotional piece in fit in the gifted education framework in your building/district?
thanks for hopping in, Don! Appreciate and respect your perspective!
A6: As an AP teacher, I need to recognize when to push edges & when they need a day to be silly.
A6: I get to loop with my Ss for grades 6-8. We form a community. Many academic & social-emotional advantages.
A6: CCP+, Advanced courses, Specialized electives...
I ran/tested a Gs add-on to our advisory program. Gs experienced failure in a safe environment (domino rally challenges, chess...)
Principal Cole
A6: Art shows, Music cabarets, differentiated assessments/projects
Our gifted students travel to Fallingwater, bring devices & share evidence/artifacts of elements of architecture.
Q6
Supporting gifted Ss by allowing them to be different. Self-contained is essential to let them be different, together!
That's awesome! https://t.co/1cZw9LvIKG
A6: I get to loop with my Ss for grades 6-8. We form a community. Many academic & social-emotional advantages.
Could be multiage or across buildings. Met many willing to do that for a few hrs w/true intellectual peer. https://t.co/eItPEzuX8g
where do you pull out the 1 kid in a grade? To their own class?1 on 1. Make them more awkward socially?
Engaged my Ss in an immersive simulation experience at the Challenger Learning Center. Real time problem solving & teamwork!
A6: Dual enrollment, internships, and collaborative exploration projects
Skills and interests don't always address social/emotional needs of gifted kiddos.
A6) Interdisciplinary movie making unit, currently using Powtoon, iMovie to alter story endings, happy Stone Fox ending 😊
A6: I get to meet with teaching teams to collaborate, discuss how best to meet Ss needs.
building good character is just as important as academics. I love that your Ss help each other out.
A6 Anything that takes the time to support social/emotional needs of Ss is a great starting point, then the learning comes.
A6: Our guidance counselors have strong awareness of g/t needs & support students' needs.
Continuum of services based on Id area need - range from gen Ed support to subject classes to full day program.
A6: Agree with many that the and approach is perfect for our Gifted S's. And, really, all S's at that.
A6: mostly course availability. Discussion at some levels about co-teaching with gifted educator
I looped with my 7th & 8th grade GT math Ss for years, can't say enough good things about that model!
Thanks for letting a passionate P and T talk about my gifted 5th grader tonight!
We have fantastic teachers trying Genius Hour. We are doing some creativity activities next week with all!
A6: Our admins very supportive of providing the right resources for g/t. If I need a new resource, they make sure I get it.
We discuss that we all have different strengths, So helping someone & doing things together we're SUPER STRONG
A6: Also a diverse program - recognize the strength of Ss that may have disabilities in other areas but amazing insight in another
A6: I'm not 100% sure. I try to be there for every S: gifted, talented, struggling or normal! Lending an ear is usually effective
I offer chess as an exploratory advisory activity. Gs love the challenge and develop relationships
Plan to take all our 8th graders from 3 bldgs for team building day in May. Need to set them up for support and success before HS
A6: Great examples for Secondary students. "Harder courses" isn't the "fix" instead these are options. https://t.co/Ns3ake5NRA
A6: Dual enrollment, internships, and collaborative exploration projects
Yes! Technology opens up lots of options for creating and differentiation https://t.co/2RYLCRsyw7
A6) Interdisciplinary movie making unit, currently using Powtoon, iMovie to alter story endings, happy Stone Fox ending 😊
I have two excited staff members , working on implementing coding, makerspace, tech teams.
My 7th & 8th graders love that we're involved in learning something new on Day 1. No introductory "stuff."
