The #coachapproach chat benefits school administrators and other school leaders wishing to lead with a "coaching hat." It moderated by the co-authors of the book The Coach Approach to School Leadership: Leading Teachers to Higher Levels of Effectiveness.
Good evening #Coachapproach I am an elementary principal in Kansas City and am always looking my own skill set to be able to coach our team to continually improve
A1: The list can go on and on if not putting the big rocks first, but mine this year has been some significant, time consuming student crisis #CoachApproach
A1 this is my first year at this building so I have spent the year listening, learning & being present. So a roadblock for me is taking the time to learn & build that mutual trust #Coachapproach
I wouldn't consider that a roadblock though...the time you are taking for conversations/building relationships is crucial to lay the foundation for coaching #CoachApproach
Sounds like you've spent time on learning about the culture of your school. Hopefully that information will help you move to the next steps you've set for yourself. #CoachApproach
A1 I've been spending a lot of time moving the needle to a more restorative approach esp. w/ larger incidents. The cost has been time in the classrooms. #CoachApproach
Let’s:)! Truly! I know schedules are crazy but PM me possible times; I’d love to see your school! Happy to host you at Portfolio as well. #coachapproach
A1: I’m in classrooms but I’m often unable to have 1-on-1 conversations because Ts don’t have an adjacent conference period to my visit. #CoachApproach
Welcome Gina. Time management is a biggie. We all have to find a system that works for us. What are ways you try to attack the time monster? #CoachApproach
A2 I have found that I need to schedule my priorities and not prioritize my schedule. If I am purposeful about scheduling my time to be in rooms it is more likely to occur #coachapproach
We're really trying to use #restorative#practices and add'l supports, rather than just a disciplinary consequence. It takes time to change-- I guess I've been coaching out-of-class staff more lately. #CoachApproach
The use of great tools ensure great conversations occur with staff. One simple tool, Google Calendar. A great transparent tool for admins to use for in-house communication. #coachapproach
A2: Sometimes we have to step back to pay attention to what are we reacting to and ask what proactive measures can be put in place that may take time, but save time later. #CoachApproach
A2: For time management, learn to say no. I also found it helpful to create a weekly schedule (of sorts) with flexibility built in to it. #CoachApproach
A2 have used voxer as a way to send immediate feedback to teachers as soon as I leave the classrooms. Hearing my voice, tone, & enthusiasm is a great first step to individual meetings #coachapproach
A2 We set up our admin eval system in a way that facilitates coaching as each T works with 1 admin all year, informally and formally. Gives A focus and T consistency #CoachApproach
I have to use both paper and digital. I use an ongoing notebook for my to dos, lists, notes, etc... A simple #bulletjournal. I found a new notebook I LOVE even though I have a houseful of unused notebooks. #coachapproach
Q3: Pick your biggest roadblock--what needs to change in order for this one to be out of your way? What do you need to do/need from others to make this change? #CoachApproach
Q3 Pick your biggest roadblock - what needs to change in order for this one to be out of your way? What do you need to do/need from others to make this change? #coachapproach
A3 my biggest roadblock is being systematic in my efforts of being in all classrooms regularly. Will keep a google doc with visits for each room and times to be present in all times of the day #coachapproach
When I was an intructional coach, it was very difficult starting out as I felt unwelcome, not to say I was unwelcome, but I felt that way. Also, it was brand new, and I didn’t feel like I had the principal’s support or a school vision for it, no plan.
A2: I’ve tried “officing” in the hallway or even the lunchroom. If I’m at lunch, I know all my kids and all my teachers will be there and I can check in AND be present at the same time! #CoachApproach
A2: I’ve found teachers are most receptive when I first enter their classrooms and help. I help students, with management, etc. This usually leads to very real conversations and let’s them know I’m there for them. #coachapproach
I know of principals/secretaries that have gone through similar training. They shared so many great tips. #coachappoach - keep office distraction free, set aside time to close your door and work, schedule classroom visits, etc... #CoachApproach

I like Google Keep with an Apple pen. I create my own templates, can handwrite, but it's all stored digitally so I never carry a notebook. #bestofbothworlds#CoachApproach
