The first Twitter edchat in the Philippines, helping teachers grow their PLN, use tech in the classroom and promoting a culture of teachers helping teachers.
A1 Empowering students about global issues first and foremost to make them aware of the world out there. If they can relate with others then they can talk about them. Kids can! #edchatPH
A1 create units of inquiry based on the community where our students live and play. When students find meaning and context with their learning, they begin digging deeper into ways on how they can make it better #edchatph
A1: I’ve been struggling just to get my Ss to reach out to the community around them. The Ss have the desire they just don’t know how to help. #EdChatPh
A1 as a social studies teacher, the “balitaan” tool (morning news) is one way to get students to connect with the world they live in. The news doesn’t have to be controversial, it should just get them thinking. #edchatph
Always love the inquiry approach that is grounded on real life experiences. This makes learning more meaningful! This also makes their learning turn into action in a more authentic way and not just the packaged type of learning. Love this! #EdChatPh
A1: Action for our units of inquiry always stem from a real-life problem they want to solve. However, prior frontloading is needed for Ss to be aware of the problems, as most of them live in a bubble. #edchatph
I love how your brought up that some of our kids live in a bubble and they are not just aware of what's happening. Real-life problems should be lessons in the classroom. #EdChatPh
A1 (cont) my favorite news share was the AI that became self aware. My students were amazed at the advances of technology but were also wary of the Terminator becoming a reality. #edchatph
@EdChatEU wishes luck to all participants of #edchatPH.
You are all invited to join #EdChatEU multilingual education chat about Open Educational Resources today at 13.00 CET.
education chat in more than 20 languages is really a great experience.
A1 We start off with local problems that are related to the global issue. That way, the issue is real to the students. We do a problem/project/product-based activity to solve the local problem, then analyze how effective the solution will be on a global scale. #EdChatPh

We should never assume as teachers that they know. Frontload as much as possible, & provide opportunities for Ss to discover that other kids as well are doing something to solve everyday problems. #edchatph
A1: Help students become aware of problems in the world... Then give them time to collaborate and work on those problems. Innovation and problem-solving need to be practiced. Service-learning is a great way to do that. 👍 #EdChatPh
A1 provide students with various sources of information and let them ask questions. Sometimes I’m amazed with students who spend 10 minutes reading/analyzing and they come back with so many questions tapping on different concepts #edchatph
@teacherforest Science Fair is amazing! Make it an Innovation Fair! It's not just Science anymore! Include everyone :) More synergy! More collaboration. That's real life there! :) #edchatph
My goal for the engineering design part of my science fair class is to let them look at the SDGs for inspiration. I want science fair to not be so rooted on the “science” part

A2 the inquiry approach is that each phase of the cycle builds upon what students know and deepens it. By the end of the cycle, students have developed a deeper understanding & appreciation of their unit to be informed enough to think about how to take action #edchatph
#edchatph a2 Design thinking is messy, so a general theme like our Get data doing Science is a way to help ss come up with ideas without spending hours thinking of them. Esp. if you are going to work in a second language @skymazef3#thinking
A2: And what I look forward to when Ss take action is that it doesn't have to be something really big or obvious. It could be as invisible as a change in mindset/heart. #edchatph

A2 last year’s science fair was really interesting because I saw my students get really interested in alt ways to harness energy (piezoelectricity), cleaning the ocean (testing the ocean bucket), or figuring out how to improve the liter of light #edchatph
Thank you for sharing this! We love messy things in the classroom! What we did at @KidsCanInnovate is to use words familiar to young students to get design-thinking approach "easy" to follow. :) #edChatPh
A2: To get kids to come up with ideas I start off by showing some of my failures in the design thinking process... Then I show them how I went back to ideas and changed them. Once they see failure as a springboard for success they're more likely to try. #EdChatPh
A2 We continue to spread the word about design thinking, computational thinking. In training sessions, we talk about generating ideas and looking at patterns for solutions. Teachers first, then students after. Practice what we preach. #edchatPH

A2 I like showing them videos of students talking about how they’re coming up with different ways to reduce their school’s carbon emissions, or using algae growth for something. #edchatph
This is so true! Design thinking has been a buzz word in the Philippines but it is not very much rooted in learning for now. We should share experiences of doing this in the classroom! #edChatPh
A2: #EdChatPh I am working on a randomized controlled trial on the effect of design thinking in student achievement in a formal classroom subject - Science!!! Big project for a big collab with a European-based foundation! Would love to share this once done!
I agree. I’ve seen design thinking used in the context of business solutions and corporate setups. But it’s applicability is universal and it should start in our schools. Develop critical thinkers and problem solvers at an early age. #edchatph
Ah #edchatph The circular thinking might be that research could be googling terms to see what is out there. Sometimes you don't know what you don't know until you do an inquiry run @skymazef3 Then the indepth research can start.
Part of me likes the engineering design process instead. Maybe it's the same thing, but someone was pointing out that there wasn't a lot of substance behind DT. Not sure if they're right. #edchatph
A2 I have the students integrate sci method, engineering design process and software dev process in designing their solutions. We also join STEAM Competitions in robotics, CAD Design and, soon, CS. Of course, Journaling is key! #EdChatPh
A2 We use design thinking a lot. I have observed a significant increase in engagement when students are given the chance to design solutions. I present a problem that is relevant to the topic and have them research information. They then use the information to design the sol'n.

Gawd I start like that all the time, chuck a bunch of words into a search engine and start going down the rabbit hole of inquiry. It has led me to some pretty awesome places. If you only do concepts you know, you will miss out on HEAPS. #edchatPH
A2: Instead of using design thinking, I focus on helping my Ss understand the importance of planning before just diving in. I show them this video to make the point: https://t.co/yB1D5TfBgU#edchatPH
A3 the mere fact we’re getting our students to think about solving problems in our community is already a sign of empathy. Their products are evidence of them caring for the world they live in. #edchatph
A3: I remember that there was a chat about #empathy awhile back. Yes, science & math help solve them. But it's empathy that drives us to find these problems in order to solve them for others. #edchatph
It's part of a series of education project of a London-based edu org. Can't speak much about it right now, but I am pretty sure there will be a platform to share this. Will keep you posted. #EdChatPH
A3: That is why it is more helpful when the problem is real and the Ss can actually help. I’ve Ss complain that they have worked on projects that were artificial (designed to pull at your heart but not helping anyone). #edchatPH
A3: Empathy drives innovation. We want human-centered solutions and projects. We want the next innovators (our students) to care about humanity. Empathy that transpires into action for others. #EdChatPh
A3: Empathy must be taught and used to help groups work effectively. Good collaboration involves empathy and understanding. All people want to be understood and cared for... Empathy needs to be a priority not just for the classroom but life. https://t.co/6iGTUlpw4i#EdChatPh
A3 Having an affective aspect to lessons is of vital importance for our students to thrive in a tribe-based workforce. Also, teaching our students to be empathic will help them come up with more effective solutions that their future stakeholders will buy into more. #EdChatPh

#edchatph a3 With smaller families and greater social isolation (IRL) Empathy I feel is slipping. It's one of the things I like to see promoted within inquiry units and problem solving (when it is applicable). @skymazef3
A3: So true! The only thing I would add is empathy also allows people to understand the people they are collaborating to problem solve with. When you can put yourself in another perspective it opens a world of new viewpoints to the empathizer. #EdChatPh

A3: We set up Social Stations in our leadership class and students were in simulations to feel how it might feel to be in someone else's shoes, to experience what they are experiencing. It was awesome! https://t.co/aiMphjgDNR#empathy#edchatph
A3: Emulate empathy with students. Don't be an authoritarian who demands respect - earn it from children by fostering trust and care. Learn from and with students. Relationships over content. #edchatph
A4 I have had a robotics team compete against 500+ teams from other countries (one from the PH!!!). My students have also collaborated with a software developer in the UK via videoconference. Speaking of which, if you want to collaborate, we can print prosthetic hands #EdChatPh
#games4ed#edchatph Hi ho hi ho it's off I go to play Triominos and Dweebies with a 5 and 9 year old. IRL does call and a grand chance to share thinking patterns on a rainy #MElbourne day @skymazef3
A4: Technology tools come in to connect our classrooms to classrooms around the world. @Skype@EmpaticoOrg are some of these tools! @Flipgrid is awesome also! #EdChatPh
A4: I've use @Flipgrid to work with students in different countries with my students. It allows collaboration and problem solving... It's a platform to break down barriers of time zones and countries so students can see each other and truly learn from each other. #EdChatPh
Hey guys, we are on @participate. Follow #edchatPH and follow all those who participated today. Special thanks to @jimtuscano for moderating today's chat.
A4: @KidsCanInnovate Camp is having an Online Global Innovation Camp on Aug-September. It's a global edu activity that connects students and teachers! Register you class at: https://t.co/j2es1rhNZP#EdChatPh

Thank you, sir. If anyone in #EdChatPh knows someone that needs a prosthetic hand, lets have our students #collaborate. We l will find a way to send the print to you.
A4: using #Skypeclassroom is one way! Or we can use @Flipgrid to share our thoughts - much mire engaged than reading materials! Ss can learn the world is not different as they think. (Sorry to be late but managed to catch-up the last one!) #EdChatPh
