#K12ArtChat is an #ArtsEd chat that happens every Thurs 8:30 pm CST founded by #TeamGrundler @ArtGuy76 & @GrundlerArt & share Ss' art on Fridays via #FabArtsFri.
A1 10 yrs from now I hope our ed. system has prioritized the arts & elevated them to required not elective. If we want creative thinkers, we need more art to develop creative thinkers. Creative thinkers are developed in the arts & practiced in every other discipline #K12ArtChat
Jeremy, Connecticut. This is from memory; someone see how I did:
"I confess to pride in this coming generation. You are working out your own salvation. You play with fire openly, where we did in secret -- and few of you are burned!" - FDR to a graduating class of 1926 #K12ArtChat
A1 I picture the arts being the most important subjects taught because creativity, innovation, exploration and effective communication/presentation will be some of the most important skills-the arts can teach these concepts/skills beautifully and meaningfully #K12ArtChat
#K12ArtChat A1 I hope in the near future to have Portfolio's instead of grades across all curricular areas including community service. Arts seamless in the academic programs to elevate deeper connections to the world.

A1: moving away from teacher led instruction to more student centered with individualized student goals- but how is this done for 800 s’s??? #K12ArtChat
Q2: What can we do to change the Standardized testing culture to a culture that embraces growth mindset, 1 in which Ss produce artifacts to demonstrate growth over time? #K12ArtChat
A1. Well, technology will be a big part of how students learn and what stays relevant. Many ideas and topics not associated with #tech will not remain a part of curriculum anymore, as those topics won't be as important for practical knowledge and understanding. #k12artchat
A1...I would like to see the arts help in making our students creative thinkers. Help open that other side of the brain to think outside of the norm. #K12ArtChat
A1: Hopefully more nimble and flexible given the pace of change in the world today. That said, it will still be based on relationships and great teachers will be at the heart of it. #K12ArtChat
Q2: What can we do to change the Standardized testing culture to a culture that embraces growth mindset, 1 in which Ss produce artifacts to demonstrate growth over time? #K12ArtChat
A2 host parent conversations @ the importance of art/creativity. Small group of thoughtful citizens. Also, opt out of state testing. These will go away if everyone opts out. Host exhibitions/celebrations of learning. #K12ArtChat
A1: We had discussion about this tonight at school; see it moving away from a traditional bell schedule, not so compartmentalized, increase in student control over learning, and authentic collaboration among staff
#K12ArtChat
A2 Focus on process over product. Are students engaging processes meaningfully is way more important than making “good” work. What is good work constantly changes, how good work gets made doesn’t. #K12ArtChat
#K12artchat A2 what is valuable for the future? Application of knowledge & how to make connections on a global level. Self awareness and know your passion... pursuit of happiness.
A2. This will take some political action to fight the lobbyists in DC and all the push from the book companies. It more than just a local initiarrive. #K12ArtChat
A2: Our district is moving to evidence based grading or standards based grading. I think this shift is huge in changing the testing culture. It’s all about mastery with time instead of numbers. #K12artchat

A2: Standardized tests and growth mindset shouldn’t be mutually exclusive, but the former has taken up an inordinate amount of bandwidth during the NCLB era. As states/districts shift to implementing ESSA next school year, we should (hopefully) start seeing a change. #K12ArtChat
A3 ask communities to take a stand for creativity. Creative output should be as revered as athletic prowess & class rank/gpa. Communities need to redefine ed. success to include those creative minds that walk in the shadows but have the power to shine bright. #K12ArtChat
A2: I think as you see companies moving away from requiring specific degrees and towards skills and mindsets, then we will see a shift in ed; I think we're a long way away from seeing standardized testing going away, though
#K12ArtChat
I think we have to show community and admin more of the process- video/time lapse and have kids reflect on the process via writing or speaking #K12ArtChat
A3, Invite the community in for programs; give them a reason to value the arts & see the importance not only in the lives of students but how art & creativity can impact them #k12ArtChat
Have to leave a bit early tonight. Thanks for the chat! Looking forward to prepare my studentsfor their future tomorrow. Hope you can do the same! #K12ArtChat
A3: I think its a two way street, and we'll see the school more ingrained in the community - the community providing resources and opportunity for school, and school providing resources for the community
#k12artchat
Thanks for all the support lady! Glad to have you here and cool that our kids know we know each other! Elementary and middle school art teachers unite! #huffmanpyp#k12artchat#tabchat
A2. Need to question the questions that form the basis of standardized testing. Are they practical? Do they help in the real world, and make the subject interesting enough to study? Once we do that and work with students to think out-of-the-box, we can trigger change. #k12artchat
Q3 what is beat for the individual. There is no "one size fits all" in education-thats whyvstandardizes testing is not an acurate picture of a child, school, district #K12ArtChat
A4 we do not have a-f grades anymore. The shift is happening to move towards standards based grading. More work can be done in the special areas to more specifically target the learning goals #K12ArtChat
A1 10 yrs from now I hope our ed. system has prioritized the arts & elevated them to required not elective. If we want creative thinkers, we need more art to develop creative thinkers. Creative thinkers are developed in the arts & practiced in every other discipline #K12ArtChat
A3...involving the community in what students are doing, having opportunities to have the community see the work of Ss then they want to become stronger supporters. Communicating with the community is vital to have support for the arts. #K12ArtChat
A4: Assessment should be a healthy part of teaching and learning. Students should be given multiple opportunities to demonstrate mastery. Instead of “failing” students, let’s encourage and empower them with opportunities to succeed. #K12ArtChat
I have these flowers on display in the front office of the school, so it is the first thing you see when you walk in. 3rd Observational drawing, science research on parts of flowers, then created their own! #K12ArtChat
I feel this more acutely than ever with our own children the “standard” doesn’t work for all. We have three kids with dyslexia and other differences and it can be frustrating when the system wants them to fit in a box #K12ArtChat
A4, I hate grades for art. I do agree there needs to be a self assessment for accountability & reflection because artists do that. It is just teaching students how to think like an artist #k12ArtChat
A4: Assessment should be a healthy part of teaching and learning. Students should be given multiple opportunities to demonstrate mastery. Instead of “failing” students, let’s encourage and empower them with opportunities to succeed. #K12ArtChat
A4 I do see grades going away in favor of public exhibitions of learning. Making thinking and creating public provides authentic audience/feedback. Learning should be felt/experienced. Ss need an audience (of 1 or 1k) not a letter grade. #K12ArtChat
A4. A-F grades going away? The basic MS/HS day structure is the same as it was 80 years ago. This will be a tough push as grades have become more demanding over the years. Will Ivy league be ok with pass/fail? #K12ArtChat
A4: I can see the A-F going away in the near future. When you have convos with kids about their work and its not centered around a grade, it is usually so much more honest. Feedback more meaningful when there is opportunity for growth afterward
#k12artchat
A5 to move away from an ed. system to an ed. experience, we need to let ss be co-creators of content. Ts can provide standards/skills but let the ss find relevant ways to apply them for an audience. Skills should be part of a larger learning journey. #K12ArtChat
A5: we have to focus on each child. Think about them individually and meet their educational needs. Have conversations and then come up with a plan. Don’t plan everything for kids before you even meet them. #k12artchat
A5, I see the power inside the schools being spread throughout from Admin to Students. My school has leadership teams for district, buildings, & now student. #k12ArtChat
A5 i would like to "track" kids like they do in European countries. Why not push Ss into areas where they excell instead of hammering them with subjects they struggle in just make them "well rounded" almost to a fault. #K12ArtChat
A5 pre and post assements to place students in readiness groups - then determine what each group needs to explore to master the next concept #K12artchat
A5: Ss pursuing passion projects and Ts facilitating experiences. Art teachers are experienced giving voice and choice, we can be leaders in this area!
#K12ArtChat
A4...we are starting to look at assessment in our district. I want my students to have feedback from me to help them grow as artist not to give out a grade and have a student see it then feel they are not good at art. My goal, help them love art! #K12ArtChat
A3. Suggestions for tools that engage both students and teachers. A curriculum that isn't able to utilize strengths of different teachers while being convenient enough for students to cope up with is harmful. (1/2) #k12artchat
A6 #digcitpln My 5yr old son went through 5 sheets of paper while creating a bday card for a friend. He threw some pages into the recycling bin and said to them, "Bye, thanks for helping my brain grow." It's a small thing but also a huge thing!
A3. While that does sound good in theory, the community can still take baby steps by involving more teachers and allowing them to showcase their work. That would help them find the right mix that would better to cater to students' needs. (2/2) #k12artchat
#k12artchat A6 We need to leverage our PLN, social media, blogging, writing about what we accomplish, Push out all the good works we do with students. BE VISIBLE in the community. Reach out beyond your school building walls.
A6) Prioritize family and community engagement, and sharing by all means possible, digital and otherwise. We can't know what we don't see. #K12PRChat#K12ArtChat
A6: Don’t whine but be honest and present solutions. The demands continue to pile up and it’s often hard to put first things first - like planning/curriculum/interventions. #K12ArtChat
Q7: How can educators work together w/ lobby legislators to see make positive changes (Clsrm, Resources, Higher Salaries, Less testing, ETC?) #K12ArtChat
Q7: How can educators work together w/ lobby legislators to see make positive changes (Clsrm, Resources, Higher Salaries, Less testing, ETC?) #K12ArtChat
A6: Get the community in the building, let them see what school looks like now. I observed elementary school recently, and even as a teacher I was amazed at how engaging it was to be in 1st grade
#K12ArtChat
A6 Communication is key. Family, friends , neighbors , parents, legislators. How do they know what we do, what we need, what our Ss need unless we talk to them. #K12ArtChat
#K12artchat A7 I believe you need to make the community care by having them know you. Get out beyond the school buildings and get involved in the community. Be a leader.
A6...letting the community see what we are doing. Being open. They can not support what they don't know is going on. Use twitter, other digital portfolios, and other ways to get the word out about the art program. #K12ArtChat
A4. It's hard to say if traditional grades would ever go away. May be a grade would become more inclusive, focusing on more and more parameters that define a student's performance to truly assess him/her. #k12artchat
A7, well, first you need to find like mindedpeop.e that have a common goal as yourself. Then you can all form a solid group that can’t be ignored. 1 can be overshadowed, 20 can be seen. #k12ArtChat
A7 inviting board members and legislators into our classrooms. Promoting all our programs to our parents and communities adds value and helps support. Get the word out with your personal & district communications ! #k12artchat
A7...comunication is so important. We all need to support each but we can't support each other if we don't know what is going on outside our own rooms. #K12ArtChat
A7: Let them see what we really do and communicate that ed. is changing - Ts are smart, hard working, and we are working to provide experiences to help develop minds; our Ss will drive a future economy that is ever shifting
Econ always key with legislators
#K12ArtChat
A5. Education might flow from one grade (education level) to another instead of being taught in discrete chunks. It can 'flow' at different rates for different students, making it individualized. We would need more teachers for the task though. #k12artchat
A7: Us being art teachers/artists put us in an interesting position. I agree that getting our self's out there in the community and being heard. As artist we can do that two fold. Both normally and through art. Art has been used to make a point since it's inception. #k12artchat
A6. Popularity of teachers among people was proven by professors such as Richard Feynman. It's important that we present teachers as thinkers, and show their work to more and more people. (1/2) #k12artchat
A6. When you place teachers on the same pedestal as scientists, launching them into the profession as people who have researched students just like a scientist has researched physics or chemistry, you improve their position in the society. (2/2) #k12artchat
I like Q3 to have as the weekly question. I would like to hear other ideas about involving the community...what people have tried and what was successful. #K12ArtChat
A7. That's a tough question! Teachers need to find a place among legislators first and then raise their voices so that it reaches the right set of ears. That way, they would develop knowledge of the constraints that position holds and how their needs can be fulfilled. #k12artchat
