A weekly chat covering topics related to teaching with a global perspective. A rotating cast of guest hosts include education experts and influencers. A must-follow for all educators who would like to open their classroom to global opportunities! Hosted by @HSingmaster and sponsored by @AsiaSocietyEDU
This is Jennifer from @longviewglobal checking in! It has been a while since my last #globaledchat cohost. A character that I connect with is Reynie Muldoon from Mysterious Benedict Society. Reynie is average looking with average hair and average clothes.... I wish I were Kate!
Good evening #globaledchat! I'm a Spanish teacher & consultant in Kentucky and I am... Amelia Peabody! There's a globetrotting, fiercely independent and curious progressive educator hiding in this loving wife. :)
Hi #globaledchat! Checking in and out because my kids did NOT go to bed on time. š wow, this question is super hard... fist thought was Guy from Fahrenheit 451. I just taught the book so itās fresh, but thereās truth to that too.
A1: I teach 14-16 year olds English, so incorporating reading is my job. We read novels, articles, poetry, etc. I offer choice within our poetry unit. I used to offer choice more often in the novel unit, and am considering doing so at least once a year again. #globaledchat
A1 We read during reading time but in addition I read aloud while the kids are packing up, when we have a free minutes! Ss also read for morning work, my Ss Love book clubs!! So...we read often!! š #GlobalEdChat
Have you been checking out #westminstagram this week? The Upper School Choral Ensemble has been taking over the account during their annual Spring Break trip! This year theyāre in #Barcelona! Follow their adventures: https://t.co/DpscNAszno
They connect with it! Definitely see the relevance and the irony. We connected it with stories of endangered cultures from @goproject this year, which was super impactful. #GlobalEdChat
A1 The more I think about it we read all day long..in all subjects! I work hard to make sure that my Ss have a variety of books to choose from! #GlobalEdChat
A2: Cultural backgrounds influence our experiences. We bring those experiences and perceptions with us to the table. It is important to have a mix of cultures in a classroom to add multiple perspectives and make the discussion one that leads to growth. #globaledchat
A1: secondary Social Studies. Try to incorporate excerpts or short books along with speeches, docs, poetry. I Am Malala and Long Walk To Water come to mind #globaledchat
A1 our units are grounded in literature. Right now Iām actually trying to get into āotherā literatures (decolonize Literature?) by incorporating more photography, art, film, doc, etc #globaledchat
Hi #globaledchat! I am Ligaya, joining from NJ. A character I have connected with is Lyra Belacqua from His Dark Materials. I loved her fearlessness, tenderness, and overall badassness #globaledchat
Yes - HUGE! We know that diversity alone is nowhere near good enough, but itās such an important and necessary springboard. Almost a prerequisite for the real work. #GlobalEdChat
A1 In my #SpanishTeacher hat, I use books that I can adapt to have comprehensible language and teach a big lesson. E.g. The Other Bears (LOVE THAT BOOK) #GlobalEdChat
A2 Need to have books that Ss can relate to in the class library! Ss Ned to be able to see themselves in the book! Having lit circles and providing these books gets all the Ss reading. Such rich conversations about different cultures happen #GlobalEdChat
A2: Studentsā cultural backgrounds shape global conversations around text by expanding perspectives, fostering empathy, and truly building community. Itās what itās all about! #globaledchat
A2 cultural differences lead to many underlying meanings unnoticed by the other person when having conversations. This is why reflection is so importantafter these conversations #globaledchat
Students respond out of their own cultural locations to the books they read and that's ok as long as they recognize they are doing this and don't judge based on their cultural beliefs
I give them guidelines and then set them loose on Poetry Foundation. They do have to get their poem approved, but it is rare that I don't approve it. I do use texts that I pick as well, but I really like giving them as much freedom of choice here as possible. #globaledchat
There was a great project a few years ago by @VBoixMansilla at @ProjectZeroHGSE having diverse students write books to be more reflective of themselves when there weren't any in the library!#globaledchat
In reply to
@kimmykcollins, @VBoixMansilla, @ProjectZeroHGSE

A3: We have to teach certain standards, so texts that clearly portray them are generally what we use. However, I can teach standards using just about any text. I prefer to go for engagement above all else. #globaledchat
A1- When I was a 4th grade teacher, I loved our classroom library. We, of course, read during ELA, but we also incorporated books into other subjects as much as possible (we even had a Math section in our humble library) #globaledchat
In Oregon since thereās so much about perspectives, analysis and, comparing in standards the potential to teach global perspectivesis often there #globaledchat
A3 there are lots of different standard sets. Students can practice academic skills with any text. Other standards are more important and should guide our lit choices. @Tolerance_org has great standards to start with. #GlobalEdChat
A3 Complex text! In my opinion, need a variety of genres for Ss to read but what are they doing with those texts?! What activities? Are they reading for pleasure? Reflecting? Journaling? Need to be intentional with why and what!! #GlobalEdChat
Do you use a lot of e-books in your language classroom? I had an author write about that recently and I thought it was a really engaging strategy: https://t.co/6caWrjmdKZ#globaledchat
A2) If they see themselves in what they're reading, they feel like more a part of the global world. They begin relating to more than their own experience. #GlobalEdChat
A3 Honestly, for world language, I need something close to 90% comprehensible, and even children's literature written for native speakers is too high. So I have to adapt. #globaledchat
A3: I try to consider a wide range of standards, cultures, interests, etc when providing texts for my Ss. I usually provide a lot & let them self select. Any that can be used for cross curriculum learning are great! #GlobalEdChat
#globaledchat We created this resource as a way to pair well known texts with global texts so teachers could expand the books kids were reading and comparing
A3: Standards set what must be taught not how to teach. And I decided long ago my students deserved more than strategies to pass a test. #teachSDGs#globaledchat
Completely agree with this - life is filled with a variety of types of texts and various complexities. Developing habits of mind & comfort with range is critical for life! #globaledchat
A4: Chronicle of a Death Foretold, Persepolis, Things Fall Apart. They have been a part of our curriculum for some time. I enjoy them, but would like to change things up a bit. Looking for suggestions... #globaledchat
A4: For me, literature selections must be diverse and relevant. So I search for texts that provoke thought and are a reflection of current issues. Some of the best finds have been recommended by students. #globaledchat
Completely agree with this, @shortkg! Teachers often don't have tons of time to go looking for replacements that do reflect a global society. Which is why it is great you did your list! #globaledchat
A4: "Emmanuels Dream", "The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind", "One Plastic Bag" & more on this @padlet#GlobalEdChat Global Student Voice/Persuasive Writing Q2 https://t.co/t6hDhVY5lj
A4 I made this list of authentic children's books in Spanish to help me move past just bilingual books translated from English: https://t.co/F4W6rmlMWW#globaledchat
Worlds of Words publishes a free online journal, WOW Review, with reviews of new global books that focus on their cultural authenticity and suggests possible book pairings. #globaledchat
A5: We build empathy and compassion through discussion, and projects like one we relate to stereotypes with the Danger of a Single Story. My team is also in the process of creating a student-centered, year long project that incorporates empathy for others. #globaledchat
Q5: How have you used global books in instructional practice to raise studentsā awareness of cultures and to build understanding or empathy? #globaledchat
A5: With young kids, just seeing kids do ordinary things (though it might look different, in a different place) reinforces that people live in other ways, but are also similar to us a people. #globaledchat
We pair U.S. novels or picturebooks with global books that have the same theme so kids can engage in both connection and difference and not just dismiss the books or see the global as strange. #globaledchat
A5 I use stories to prompt research and to evaluate the different stories that occur and the different ways we access and amplify (or silence) them. Ss always move from learning to amplifying and creating based on the stories and authentic cultural research. #GlobalEdChat
A5: Interpreter of Maladies would be my text of choice for stories about the immigrant experience. Beautiful writing, and a new perspective for many students! #globaledchat
Today my girls and I were exploring Cape Town via Google Earth. As soon as our little person peg landed, Zoe said, "It looks just like here!" #globaledchat
A5: With young kids, just seeing kids do ordinary things (though it might look different, in a different place) reinforces that people live in other ways, but are also similar to us a people. #globaledchat
A5: And books are the easiest way to naturally build empathy. If they love the characters, I don't have to say much. The story says it for me. More powerful than a lecture on empa
thy, and begins to form their moral imagination. #globaledchat
A6: Challenges occur when there is a conflict between a student's cultural norm and the one presented in the text. Discussion and scenarios that help the student see that they do not have to agree with the difference, but that they can respect it are important. #globaledchat
I was so excited to see the announcement about Junot DĆaz's new children's book, Islandborn. @LFPL has 5 on order- but not in Spanish. I requested the purchase. https://t.co/P12ZsbJbmO#globaledchat
We talk about the social responsibility of the author for the text to be culturally authentic and for the reader to be open-minded and not judgmental about cultures that differ from their own. #globaledchat
A4- I love iEARN's International Book Club for learning about global books and engaging Ss in global conversations about them https://t.co/7yj9TCoHhK. Love all the resources shared here, tho I would love to see more lists produced by non-US institutions or educators #globaledchat
Worlds of Words (https://t.co/8aiqw86PxW) has just created extensive global reading book lists for grade level bands from K to 12, grouping by themes and text complexity, and providing possible pairs with commonly read books #globaledchat
I have heard of that title. I am definitely reading it---especially if the writing is beautiful and offers new perspectives. Students will be more engaged. #globaledchat
A6: It can be challenging to offer Ss the context they need about another culture without coming off as voyeuristic. Engaging with those who can speak to the time or place of a story is ideal, as is maintaining sensitivity and acknowledging one's blindspots! #globaledchat
A5 I haven't yet, but am interested in curating a reading list for highschool Ss to prepare them for study abroad. Literature is an empathy machine. Ss might not remember a factoid from a student handbook, but they might remember a good story #globaledchat
Thank you to all for participating in tonight's #GlobalEdChat. Thanks especially to @shortkg and @hsingmaster . Keep doing the great work you are doing!
Next week on #Globaledchat: Global Leadership with special guests @NEAFoundation and @globaledcon! I'll be tweeting from @ASCD's EMPOWER conference in Boston! Who else will be there?
A7: I haven't done this yet, but I'd love to use technology to connect my students with other teens around the globe, so we can experience our shared humanity and push our comfort zones. #globaledchat
